Photos: Emotions as Chibok schoolgirls read letter to Trump, encourage him to keep America safe

Joy Bishara and Lydia Pogu, two of the Chibok schoolgirls, who escaped from Boko Haram captivity in 2014, read a letter applauding U.S. President Donald Trump during a recent visit to the White House.

The White House released more photos of the girls on Saturday, saying during their visit, Joy and Lyida “read the President a letter about their experience”.

On the night of April 14, 2014, Boko Haram terrorists attacked the Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok, Borno.

An excerpt of the letter is below:

Mr. President, we urge you to keep America safe and strong.

We know that some people are trying to discourage you.

Do not be discouraged. You are right to keep American safe and strong.

Not only for America. But for the world.

If America is not safe and strong, where can people like us look for hope, when there is danger?

Finally, we urge you to keep making America prosperous.”

Trump and his daughter, Ivanka, hosted the Chibok schoolgirls during their visit, the White House said.

The Boko Haram insurgents broke into the school and kidnapped the girls, who were sitting for their final exams.

But approximately 50 of the girls have escaped, including Joy Bishara and Lydia Pogu, who visited President Donald Trump, and his daughter, Ivanka Trump, at the White House last Tuesday.

The girls are recent graduates of Canyonville Christian Academy in Oregon, and they were accompanied by the school President, Doug Wead.

The President and Ivanka were both deeply moved by the girls’ visit,” the statement by the White House read.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the Chibok schoolgirls’ visit coincided with the U.S. State Department’s release of its annual Trafficking in Persons Report.

In the wake of the report, the two Chibok schoolgirls’ visit to the White House was a reminder that the survivors of the scourge of human trafficking are heroes whose courage can inspire us all,” the White House said.

Let us recommit ourselves to finding those still in the shadows of exploitation, and let us celebrate the heroes who continue to shine on the darkness of human trafficking.”

  • Just in: 5 suspects arrested over planned attack on banks in Lagos [Photo added]

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP’s) Intelligence Response Team (IRT) on Friday announced the arrest of five suspected armed robbers who had planned to attack some banks in Lagos.

The IRT Commander, ACP Abba Kyari, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

Kyari said the arrested suspects also participated in the killing of four policemen and an Army Captain in Ikorodu in April, this year.

The commander said that the suspects were arrested at Ikorodu and Ajah areas of Lagos State, as they perfected the planned attacks on the banks.

He said their arrest was part of the IGP Ibrahim Idris’ effort to neutralise the threat posed on Lagos by the notorious new militant leader called America.

According to him, America was also responsible for last week’s kidnap of school children in Epe.

“Five key members of the notorious militant group led by America, who have perfected plans to attack and rob five banks in Lagos have been arrested in Ikorodu and Ajah areas of Lagos state.

“They were all arrested after several days of unrelenting follow-ups by the IRT.

“Four of the arrested suspects are militants, who were sent by their gang leader, America, to survey the banks.

“The team was also to hire two operational buses that will be used to convey the militants to and from the river banks, to the commercial banks.

The fifth suspect is a security man in one of the banks targeted to be robbed,” Kyari alleged.

The commander, however, noted that the banks targeted were located in Lekki and Ajah areas of Lagos state.

He said that the suspects confessed to have chosen the targeted banks because of their proximity to the river banks.

“All suspects arrested have confessed to the planned robberies and confirmed that they were sent by America, their boss in the creeks, to survey the banks, together with the bank security man who allegedly brought the job to the militants.

“Also, America had fixed Thursday, June 1, as the date for the attack on the banks, before his boys were arrested by the IRT.

“The suspects are cooperating with detectives in the investigations,’’ Kyari added.

“We are not taking power from one president to the other or from one party to the other but we are taking power from Washington to you, the people”, Trump said.

“January 20, 2017 will go into history as a day that the people become the president of this country again.

“I will fight for you with every blood in my body and I will never ever let you down.

“America will start winning again, winning like never before”, the president said.

He promised to concentrate on the security of the American border and the security of the country, lamenting that the country spent trillions of dollars to secure other countries instead of America.

He also promised to make affordable education, healthcare and housing the hallmark of his administration.

In a country deeply divided by Trump’s and Hillary Clinton’s unusual campaign, Trump called for the unity of all Americans.

“When America is united, we can do the impossible”, he said.

The president also said that the era of vain promises was over.

“It is no longer the era of talk, but now it is the era of action.”

He pledged to destroy terrorists wherever they are all over the world, saying that the world will be safe and secure under his presidency.

“Together, we will make America great again, we will make America strong again, and we will make America better again”.

Trump paid glowing tributes to former president Barack Obama and his wife for their roles in ensuring peaceful and orderly transition.

Former Presidents Jimmy Carter, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton attended the inauguration with their wives, including Hillary Clinton, who was Trump’s fiercest challenger in the November 8 presidential election.

Obama: “I think we’re going to be OK”

U.S. President Barack Obama reflected Wednesday on eight years in office and expressed optimism for the future of the United States, closing his last remarks to the press by declaring, “At my core, I think we’re going to be OK.”

In his final press conference before Donald Trump is inaugurated as president on Friday, Obama defended his recent decision to commute the sentence of convicted whistleblower Chelsea Manning, expressed concern about the fate of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process and spoke forcefully about the role of a free press in a democracy.

Trump has vowed to turn back much of Obama’s legacy, seeking to repeal his signature health insurance reforms and suggesting a change of course on issues from immigration to foreign policy.

Obama acknowledged that he expects Trump to seek to change much of US policy after an election seen as a rejection of much of the Democrats’ agenda.

However, he noted, Trump will not know the magnitude of the presidency “until he sits behind that desk” and encouraged him to take the counsel of his advisers.

“This is a job of such magnitude that you can’t do it by yourself,” Obama said. “You are enormously reliant on a team – your cabinet, your senior White House staff.”

On the Middle East, Obama noted a shift in US policy in failing to block a UN resolution condemning Israeli settlement activity last month was designed to send a “wake-up call” that the situation on the ground will increasingly make a two-state solution impossible.

“It’s important for the US to send a signal, a wake-up call that this moment may be passing,” he said, noting it is unclear how the approach will play out.

The president gave his final farewell speech in Chicago last week, drawing a standing ovation – before he began his remarks – from a crowd of 18,000 Chicagoans, supporters, cabinet secretaries and White House staff.

Obama leaves office with an approval rating of 57 per cent, according to Sunday data from pollster Gallup.

Trump’s pre-inauguration approval rating stands at 40 per cent – around half of the public support Obama had (78 per cent) before his inauguration in 2009, according to Gallup.

Obama has avoided direct criticism of his successor since Trump won the Nov. 8 presidential election.

Obama has instead denounced the divisiveness that has characterized US politics and urged an inclusiveness that runs counter to much of Trump’s rhetoric.

President-elect Trump is due to be sworn in on Friday at 12 pm (1700 GMT), at which point Obama officially leaves office after an eight-year tenure.

‘America will be world’s great magnet for innovation, job creation’ – Trump

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump said on Tuesday “America would be the world’s great magnet for innovation and job creation” during his presidency.

Trump, in a tweet, quoted reports that suggested plan by automobile giant Ford to scrap Mexico plant and invest in Michigan.

Ford to scrap Mexico plant, invest in Michigan due to Trump policies,” the incoming president tweeted.

Instead of driving jobs and wealth away, AMERICA will become the world’s great magnet for INNOVATION & JOB CREATION,” he added.

The President-elect also quoted another report that “Trump is already delivering the jobs he promised America”.

Trump is already delivering the jobs he promised America,” the president-in-waiting said on his twitter handle.

The incoming president had earlier in his tweet, also slammed General Motors, threatening a “big border tax” on the automaker’s cars made in Mexico.

General Motors is sending Mexican made model of Chevy Cruze to U.S. car dealers-tax free across border. Make in U.S.A. or pay big border tax!” Trump said.

However, in a statement released after Trump’s tweet, General Motors said only a small number of its cars made in Mexico were sent to the U.S. market.

General Motors manufactures the Chevrolet Cruze sedan in Lordstown, Ohio. All Chevrolet Cruze sedans sold in the U.S. are built in GM’s assembly plant in Lordstown, Ohio.

GM builds the Chevrolet Cruze hatchback for global markets in Mexico, with a small number sold in the U.S.,” a statement from the company read.

Similarly, Trump had also earlier on Tuesday said there should be no more prisoner releases from the U.S. military detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

There should be no further releases from Gitmo.

These are extremely dangerous people and should not be allowed back onto the battlefield,’’ Trump said.

President Barack Obama had sought to close the prison since he entered office in 2009, but has been unable to carry out the plan in the face of opposition from Congress.

Obama, in Nov. 2016, announced renewed plans for closing the facility in 2017, indicating he would release more prisoners in the final weeks of his term in office, which ends on Jan. 20.
