2023: We hope Nigerians are convinced to vote for us – Tambuwal

Director General of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) presidential campaign organisation, Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State has expressed hope Nigerians are convinced enough to vote for candidates of the party in the 2023 elections.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that Governor Tambuwal expressed the hope in a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Mohammed Bello on Thursday and  in Abuja while stressing that the PDP has not set aside its drive for votes kick-started on Monday.

Tambuwal said that contrary to what was being circulated in the  social media and similar platforms, the campaign train “is continuing, by the grace of God on Monday in Kaduna”.He said he was amazed and taken aback last night when he  saw on social media and on very many platforms that the  PDP had called off its campaign.

“That is far from the truth. In fact, it is fake news. People are looking forward to our coming to states, capitals and villages because PDP is the party to beat in 2023. Other parties are afraid because they have not started (their campaigns). None of them have composed their campaign councils, not to even talk of starting. They are trying to throw spammer at our works,” Tambuwal said.

Tambuwal, who also doubled as  Chairman of Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) and the PDP Governors Forum said those making such efforts  would not succeed.

“It is one of those shenanigans when you see a party doing well and its candidate is better than yours. What you begin to do is to cause mischief. It is not going to work. We will run our campaign, as I said before, it Is going to be issue-based. We believe there are sufficient challenges in  our country.”

Tambuwal said that he believed in the candidature of Atiku Abubakar  and Ifeanyi Okowa.

“I also believe that when we get there,  we shall do better for Nigeria; and, we hope we are able to convince Nigerians to vote for Abubakar/Okowa come February 2023.”

He assured that the campaign team would replicate the kind of scenario it had in Uyo, Akwa Ibom on Oct. 10, and where thousands of party supporters turned up for the kick off of  its presidential rally.

We are working to resolve crisis in our party – PDP governors

“We have engaged with them and I believe that what they are likely to come up with will be a solution to the problem we have. Be rest assured that as governors of the party , we are also talking to ourselves on the way forward.

“Very soon the governors forum will meet and we will come up with what we feel should be the solution and the way forward for the party. We are all interested in working together for an objective and that objective is for the party and Nigerians of good will,“ he said.

Tambuwal said the PDP governors were working to take over power in 2023.

“We must work together to solve our internal problems, forge ahead and prosecute the electoral battle and by the grace of God we will have victory,” he said.

He commended BoT Chairman, members and for its initiative as the conscience of the party .

“Whenever there are issues of this nature, the Board of Trustee steps in, it is part of their functions in the party, constitutionally speaking,” Tambuwal said.

Speaking earlier, the Chairman of BoT, Sen. Adulphus Wabara, said that Nigerians would see a more united PDP before the commencement of campaign.

He said that the BoT was going round to find lasting solution to the problem dividing the party.

Wabara said that the BoT members were going to meet the party’s National Chairman, Sen. Iyorcha Ayu; the Presidential Candidate, Atiku Abubakar and his running mate, Ifeanyi Okowa on the way forward.

“Our aim is to get into the Aso Villa, for PDP to get into the Aso Villa in 2023, we need every body to come on board.

“We are still moving around, in six days time the campaign will be inaugurated. We hope and pray that before then Nigerians will see a more united PDP.

“We are doing this not for us, not for the chairman of the governors forum or anybody, we are doing this for Nigerians.

“Nigerians are looking up to the PDP to deliver them from what we are experiencing with the ruling party as we speak.

He said that the BoT members had met with some governors of the party, but yet to meet Gov. Nyesom Wike of Rivers State .

“We have also met with some of the governors. We started from my state, Okezie Ikpeazu, we moved to Enugu to meet Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, from there we met Seyi Makinde of Oyo, we met with Jerry Gana, we are really digging around to find solutions.

“We are looking for solutions for all of us to come together and win the election in flying colours,” he said.

In response to the decision of Wike and his camp to pull out of the Atiku campaign council, Wabara said that they would speak with Wike after addressing the nation on Friday.

“After Wike’s address, tomorrow we will speak with him. Wike is a member of the Board of Trustees. We have made attempt to meet with him, but I believe he has been very busy,” he said.

  • Wike sues PDP, Atiku, others, asks court to declare him PDP’s presidential candidate

Wike sues PDP, Atiku, others, asks court to declare him PDP’s presidential candidate

The Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike has dragged the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to court over the May 28 and 29 presidential primary election that was held in Abuja, the federal capital territory (FCT).

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/782/2022 has Governor Wike and a PDP chieftain, Newgent Ekamon as the plaintiffs, while the PDP is listed as the first respondent in the originating summons.

Also listed in the originating summons are the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the 2nd respondent, the Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal and Atiku Abubakar as the 3rd and 4th respondents respectively.

Recall that the presidential election of the PDP held in May returned Atiku as the presidential candidate of the PDP after polling 371 delegate votes. Wike emerged second with 237 votes and former Senate President Bukola Saraki emerged third with 70 votes.

During the presidential primary, Governor Tambuwal had asked delegates to vote for him but later returned to the podium to announce his withdrawal from the race, asking delegates loyal to him to cast their votes for Atiku instead.

After the convention, the National Chairman of the PDP, Iyorchia Ayu, described Tambuwal as the “hero of the convention.”

After the primary, Atiku had been advised to pick Wike as his running mate. However, the former Vice-President decided to nominate Governor Ifeanyi Okowa as his running mate, a move that deepened the already brewing crisis in the party.

In the originating summons, Wike and his co-applicant asked the court to determine eight issues including whether the purported transfer of Tambuwal’s votes to Atiku by the PDP was illegal and void. The plaintiffs asked the court to determine if Tambuwal lost his claim to votes the moment he stepped down for Atiku.

They asked the court to determine whether Tambuwal “having stepped down during the primaries ought to lose his votes.” Wike and Ekamon argued that should these issues be determined in their favour, the court should grant nine reliefs including a declaration that the purported transfer of Tambuwal’s votes to Atiku be declared null and void.

The plaintiffs are also seeking a declaration that the PDP acted negligently and in bad faith by assigning the Sokoto governor’s votes to Atiku at the primary. They prayed the court to “cancel the transfer of votes and a corresponding order restraining the 3rd respondent (Tambuwal’s) withdrawal in the primary was done after voting had commenced.”

The applicants also prayed the court to declare that the PDP and Atiku took undue advantage of Tambuwal’s withdrawal when they allowed the Sokoto governor to persuade delegates to vote for the former Vice-President in the primary.

Wike and Ekamon asked the court to order INEC to reject or remove Atiku from “its list of candidates in the 2023 presidential election.” They are also seeking an order commanding the PDP to recount the votes of the primary that was held on May 28 and May 29.

Lastly, the applicants are seeking an order of the court “directing the 1st respondent (PDP) to declare the 2nd applicant (Wike), a presidential aspirant in the May 28 and May 29 primary as the winner of the aforesaid primary with a corresponding order directing the 1st respondent (PDP) to forward his name as the candidate to contest the presidential election in 2023.”

In a supporting affidavit he deposed to, Ekamon noted that he was a member of the PDP and attested to the fact that Wike won the presidential election. He maintained that Tambuwal withdrew from the contest after voting had commenced and directed that his votes be assigned to Atiku.

“The third respondent (Tambuwal) speaking twice before stepping down from the contest, persuaded all his delegates who were going to vote for him to vote for the 4th respondent (Atiku).

“The 1st (PDP) and 4th (Atiku) respondents who also wanted the votes desperately agreed with the 3rd (Tambuwal) and assigned 3rd (Tambuwal) respodnent’s votes to the 4th (Atiku) respondent and increased his votes to win the 2nd applicant (Wike).

“The 2nd applicant (Wike) won the primaries if the votes of the 3rd respondent (Tambuwal) had not been transferred or assigned to the 4th respondent (Atiku)”.

According to PUNCH, the court processes had been served on the PDP at its Wadata Plaza headquarters located at Wuse Zone 5 while a copy had also been delivered to Atiku’s Campaign office in Maitama and the Sokoto State Government’s Liaison Office by the court bailiff.

  • How time, Tambuwal altered implementation of 2014 Confab report – Jonathan

How time, Tambuwal altered implementation of 2014 Confab report – Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has stated how former Speaker Aminu Tambuwal of the House of Representatives played politics with the implementation and recommendations of the 2014 Confab Report inaugurated by his administration.

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) reports the former Nigerian number one citizen made this disclosure at the public presentation of a book ‘The National Question’ authored by Akpandem James and Sam Akpe on Tuesday, in Abuja, he said that he had the full mind to implement the recommendations of the confab had he won a second term.

Jonathan who is out of the country was represented at the book launch by erstwhile secretary to the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim.

He called on Nigerians to remove politics from things of national interest, saying:

“Whenever people say that I should have implemented its recommendations, my feeling is either those people did not understand the political environment at that time, the length of time it would take to implement the report of a conference like that or probably were just playing politics with such an important matter.

“Those knowledgeable about the processes of constitutional reforms will know that to implement the Confab report, a number of alterations would have been made in the constitution which would have required the involvement of the National Assembly and state assemblies.

“Such elaborate review couldn’t have been possible at that time because by the time the report was submitted in August 2014, we were already on the verge of a general election.”

Besides time, President Jonathan also cited the political differences with Speaker Tambuwal for the failure to implement the 2014 Confab report.

    He said:

“It is also important to point out that at that time, the speaker of the House of representatives, Rt Hon Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, who was a member of my party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), had already moved out, with some members, to the opposition party.

“When you know that your parliament is under that kind of situation, it would have been imprudent on my own part to take such a precious document, which I consider as crucial to our development yearnings, to a parliament that would not give it due consideration.

“If we had a task that would have required the alteration of the constitution, enactment of new laws, and amendment of some existing ones, there was no way that could have been done overnight.

Also adding to the issues of time and Speaker Tambuwal was the suspicion towards the 2014 confab report from the general public, a development President Jonathan said made it imperative to push the implementation to after the 2015 General Election.

“We were also fully aware that, for the segments of our population that were already suspicious of all the actions of government, our intentions could have been misread, especially against the backdrop of the ECOWAS protocol on constitutional reforms which states that no substantial modification shall be made to the electoral laws of member states in the last six months before elections.”

“When I contested the 2015 elections, my expectations was that I would win a second term within which period I would have worked for the implementation of the Confab report. I felt that within the next four year mandate, my first two years would have been dedicated to implementing a reasonable part of the recommendations.”

“If we take politics out of our national calculations, we would all agree that with a fresh government it would have been easier to achieve the implementation of the report. One of the problems of this country is that we like playing politics with things that have very much to do with national interest. We play politics with our security. We play politics with our economy. We play politics with almost everything. That, definitely, is not the way to go, if we must make progress in realising our national aspirations and goals.”

In his closing remarks, Jonathan said “I implore our citizens to realise that the 2014 Conference was neither about me nor what my administration stood to gain from it at that time. It was all for the good of our country, our children and our grandchildren.

“I plead with Nigerians not to play politics with the 2014 Conference report. I believe that at the appropriate time, the country through a dedicated parliament will do the right thing. And the right thing is to duly and dispassionately consider the report of the conference with a view to implementing the recommendations for the good of the country.
