Operatives of the Ondo Security Network a.k.a Amotekun have arrested two underage cattle herders, their 52-year-old father Ibrahim Musa, and 49 cows.

The minors were arrested for threatening a 70 year-old woman Victoria Ajayi, with a cutlass around Kajola area of Akure South Local Government Area of Ondo state.

The underage herders were nabbed for flouting the Ondo government’s ban on underage herders.

Victoria Ajayi said she was informed by her grandchild that cows were on their farm and upon going out, she saw the young herders and an adult afar.

The cows were already on her farm at that time as she watched them eat her vegetables and other crops.

She said she called on one of the young kids to call the older person.

They responded angrily, with one pointing a cutlass menacingly at her.

The 70-year-old said she simply ran back into her house with her grandchild, used her hypertension medication and fled with her grandchild through the backdoor so the herders won’t see them.

Mrs. Ajayi said she had flashes of renting a new house owing to frequent visits by herders and this time, they almost got aggressive.

According to her, after she fled her house she went to Amotekun’s office to get help.

The minors 52-year-old father, Musa said it was a mistake.

Musa who said he is from Katsina State said he has been in Akure for 30 years and he has not gotten into trouble with anyone.

He said he was not around when the incident occurred and it was his little boys who are being trained to become herders that misbehaved.

The 52-year-old explained that the little boys go out with the older one to train and he was Sabo when the incident occurred.

Adetunji Adeleye, Amotekun commander in Ondo said his men responded to a distress call and they saw the cows ravaging the farm.

He noted that they saw the two underage herders also.

The boys were arrested so that their father could show up.

Adeleye said the kids would be charged to a juvenile court to face the law.

Following alleged incessant killings of youths in Ibadan area of Oyo State, by the Operatives of the State Security Network, codenamed Amotekun, hundreds of aggrieved youths took to the streets of the state capital on Wednesday protesting the killings.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that they were protesting against alleged killing of a 14-year-old boy, Peter Okafor, in the early hours of Wednesday around Uncle Joe area of Mokola in Ibadan.

NAN gathered that the victim, an apprentice with a printing press in Mokola, was allegedly shot dead.

Similar incident was recorded in Oke-Ado area of Ibadan on July 21 where two youths were allegedly killed by Amotekun corps, while celebrating the Eid-el Kabir festival.

A witness, who pleaded anonymity, told NAN that immediately the boy sighted the Amotekun operatives in the early hours of Wednesday, patrolling the area, he started running to escape.

“I don’t know what he did for them to warrant his running, but they shot him in the head and he died instantly,” the witness told NAN.

NAN further reports that immediately the information got to youths in the area, they mobilised themselves and started making bonfires on the road, thus causing traffic gridlock around Mokola area.

The protesters later moved to the state Secretariat with the corpse of the victim, and prevented both human and vehicular movements around the main gate.

Though, Mr Sunday Odukoya, the Executive Assistant on Security to the Governor, made frantic efforts to appease the protesters, they insisted that they must see the Governor, Mr Seyi Makinde.

When contacted, DSP Adewale Osifeso, the state Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, said he was at the scene of the incident.

“I am at the scene of the incident at the moment now. I will reach out to you as soon as I get to the office, please,” Osifeso told NAN.

Olayanju, who said he could not speak on the matter at the moment, simply told NAN, “we are on top of the incident”.

NAN, however, reports that some anti-riot policemen had been deployed to the scene, and patrolling major roads in the town to prevent break down of law and order.

  • Suspected herdsmen in military, customs camouflage launch fresh attacks on Igangan communities; kill Amotekun commander, three others

Suspected herdsmen in military, customs camouflage launch fresh attacks on Igangan communities; kill Amotekun commander, three others

Gunmen suspected to be herdsmen again struck late Friday night in Igangan, Ibarapa North Local Government Area of Oyo state killing four residents.

The attack was however repelled by the swift response of local security operatives.

The Commander of Amotekun Corps in Ibarapa Central simply identified as Muri was among the victims of the attack.

The attackers were said to have stormed the town in two Hilux vans, an 18-seater Hummer bus, and a Toyota Sienna bus wearing military and customs camouflage.

According to reports, the residents initially lowered their guards thinking the men were customs operatives in search of suspected smugglers.

It was gathered that the suspected gunmen arrived in the community around 7 pm on Friday and attacked some areas.

A resident said the attackers stormed the community in large number but could not give actual figure.

The convener Igangan development advocate, Oladiran Oladokun confirmed the attack saying the incident was an attempt to invade the state through the axis, a border community but was resisted by the local security operatives.

Oladokun said although, the suspected herders came in customs and military camouflage to deceive the people and change the narrative that it was security operatives who stormed the town in search of those who engage in smuggling activities, a practice that is alien to the people of the community.

He expressed disappointment over inadequate security despite the recurrence of the attacks.

A community leader, who spoke in confidence said: “Report reaching me reveals that around 8:00 pm people suspected to be herdsmen again invaded Igangan and shoot sporadically for over 30minutes. Some said they were Customs men as they wore Custom uniform but they were chased by local hunters after killing some people.

“They also passed Igboora and continue shooting and it was reported people died in Igboora too including one Amotekun operative.

“It was reported that the Commander of Amotekun in Ibarapa Central has been killed.”

Contacted, an Amotekun operative in Igangan who craved anonymity explained that the quick intervention of the local security operatives forced the assailants to retreat but not without killing some residents as they escaped through Abeokuta axis.

He said: “It is true. Around past 7 pm, we started hearing a noise around town that attackers have come again, and we quickly rushed out. They were shooting sporadically and heavily around AUD Quarters on their way to the town.

“By the turning to Jabele hotel, they killed a man there. When they saw that we were coming after them there, they turned back and headed towards Tapa. When they got to Tapa, they killed another person.

“When they got to Ayete, they killed one person, when they got to Igboora, they killed the Commander of Amotekun in Ibarapa Central named Muri.

“They wore customs and military uniform as camouflage. They wore a fake uniform. In fact, they passed in front of Operation Burst operatives in Ofiki and those ones didn’t know they were assailants on a deadly mission.

“We suspected them to be herdsmen with the way they operated and shot randomly while carrying out the attack.

The Ondo State Security Network, better known as Amotekun Corps, has impounded no fewer than 40 vehicles when its operatives raided some night clubs on Wednesday in Akure, the state capital.

The government has ordered that the nightclubs and bars should stop operating beyond midnight in the state, as part of the measures to curb the spate of armed robbery and order criminal activities that were often carried out in the night.

It was gathered that the raid was carried out at about 2am on Thursday.

Speaking on the development, the Special Adviser to Governor Rotimi Akeredolu on Security Matters, Alhaji Jimoh Dojumo, stated that despite the warning and directive of the government, some owners of various nightclubs and beer parlour joints had continued to flout the order.

He said, “We have to raid the night clubs and impound the vehicles because there is a subsisting order from Mr. Governor that the clubs should not operate at night for security reasons.

“We discovered that many criminal activities are perpetrated in the night, and during the interrogation of suspects, we discovered that these criminals always use clubs as shields. The level of hard drugs intake in the clubs is very high, and after taking the drugs, you see them misbehaving. All these we want to stop in this state.”

Similarly, when contacted, the Commander of the Amotekun Corps, Chief Adetunji Adeleye, who confirmed the issue said the owners of the impounded vehicles had been showing up and were warned before the vehicles were released to them.

He said, “Some of the owners of the vehicles have come with the papers of the vehicles and they have been warned while the vehicles were released to them.”

Adeleye also noted that the Amotekun corps would not hesitate to deal with anyone caught going against the government’s order, saying the corps would not relent at enforcing the directive.

  • Reps move to give legal backing to Amotekun, EbubeAgu

Reps move to give legal backing to Amotekun, EbubeAgu

The House of Representatives has passed through second reading, a bill to allow states establish security outfits to support the police.

The constitution alteration bill, if passed, will give constitutional backing to regional security outfits like Amotekun of the South-west and Ebube Agu of the South-east.

The bill is seeking to amend sections 197, 214 of the 1999 Constitution as amended.

Oberuakpee Afe from Delta State, who sponsored this bill, said in his lead debate that the bill will end the multiplication of vigilante groups.

“I wish to postulate that getting the policing architecture properly covered and defined by the constitution is a lot better for our country than the Vigilante templates which are springing up in many local governments and states that is a ready recipe for collusion and conflict. It is in the light of this imperative that I invite every one of us to look at the proposed amendments thoroughly,” he said.

The bill was adopted without debate and referred to the special committee on constitution amendment.

  • Amotekun evacuates 42 suspected Fulani invaders in Ondo

Amotekun evacuates 42 suspected Fulani invaders in Ondo

The Ondo State Government Sunday evacuated 42 suspected Fulani invaders, who were arrested on Thursday by men of the Ondo State Security Network, Amotekun, at Okitipupa, the headquarters of Okitipupa Local Government.

The suspected invaders, who are mainly from Jigawa and Kano States, claimed that they were brought to Ondo State for training as security guards.

The invaders, who assembled in front of the Army Barracks, Okitipupa before men of Amotekun, were alerted, caused panic among the residents, who suspected that they were brought to attack the town.

Addressing journalists before the people were moved out of the state in buses, the state Commander of Amotekun, Chief Adetunji Adeleye, who was flanked by the Commissioner for Information, Mr Donald Ojogo, said the government after profiling the alleged invaders, was not satisfied with their mission to the state.

He said the government considered their presence in the state a security risk, adding that it could not take chances.

Adeleye said: “In the last three days, there have been issues relating to the invasion of the state by alleged Fulani men in Okitipupa.

“We monitored and we found out that they converged in front of the army barracks. They were there for a couple of hours and at that point we tried to find out what their mission is, but because they couldn’t give satisfactory explanations, we moved them to our local office first in Okitipupa to try to debrief them and from the debriefing at Okitipupa, we had to move them to the state headquarters for proper debriefing.

“We found out that they are primarily from two major states, that’s Kano and Jigawa States. The mission that they claimed they came for, we found out that is not too clear and upon profiling, we found out that majority of them don’t even know how they got here. All they were told is they were going for training. Training for who, by who or whatsoever, they do not know.

“But from detailed investigation, we were able to narrow it down to their sponsors. The sponsors happened to also claim that they belong to an NGO, that they contracted out the training to a consultant who was supposed to train their men. They said they were going to train them as security guards.

“Right now, we look at them as security risk to the state, and at this point, we invited the sponsors, the head of the NGO and chairman of the board. They’ve also offered explanation. But we feel that we should let the people of Ondo State know that there is no crisis in Okitipupa Local Government.

“The way it was portrayed was as if some hoodlums or militants had taken over.

“We want to reassure the good people of Ondo State that we are firmly on ground in conjunction with other security agencies that there is no problem.

“Haven’t debrief them, we intended to provide escort to lead them out of Ondo State back to wherever they came from.

“As part of our discreet investigation, we found out that the so called consultant had been arrested in Delta State and I confirmed from the Delta State Police Command as at today that he’s still in their custody.

“So, why we intend to release them on bail, we will release all these ones and ensure that they are taken back to their states.”

Speaking on the matter, the state Governor, Mr Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, warned the people of the state against taking laws into their hands on any issues.

Akeredolu, who spoke through the Commissioner for Information, Mr Donald Ojogo, said the invaders would have been lynched, if not because it was professionally handled by the state particularly, the Amotekun.

“Ondo State led by Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu is not one that intends to take law into its own hands. The security situation we found ourselves in the last three days was a very precarious one.

“If not that it was discreetly and professionally handled and well managed by officials of government particularly Amotekun Commander and SSA on Security, the situation may have degenerated.

“As you also witnessed, none of them was molested. The situation would have degenerated to the extent of lynching and jungle justice. It was almost getting to that point when they were seen in a suspicious manner in Okitipupa but the governor had to rise up to the occasion to ensure that they were given to adequate protection so that jungle justice had to be avoided. That was one of the key points that was achieved in the last 72 hours. It was a very frightening situation.

“What government is trying to do today is to ensure that the way they came to the state, they will leave the state safely, peacefully and unhurt, so that when they get to their various states, they will also testify to their state government and their people that the movement that brought them to Ondo State was an unclear one and the state government had to protect them and move them back to their state,” Ojogo said.

The commissioner said Akeredolu had directed that no official of the state must issue statement or comment on security issues in the state.

“The governor has directed that in any security situation we found ourselves, the first point of contact must be security agencies.

“They are the only points of contact. Even me as Commissioner for Information and spokesperson of government is not authorised to speak on issues related to insecurity, no matter how insensitive it is.

“As long as it is security matter, we do not want anybody to speak without proper authorisation,” he said.

However, a new twist was added when an eyewitness expressed dismay that the alleged invaders could gather in front of the Army Barracks, for more than one hour without any action.

He said: “In view of the security situation in the country, one would have expected the military men at the barracks to arrest the invaders if not before the arrival of Amotekun men they should have intervened when the residents of the town arrived.

“These work that Amotekun is doing, the Police, Army and DSS ought to have played major roles.”
