  • Insecurity: FG’s move to push Amotekun under IG’s supervision is arrant nonsense – Adebanjo

Insecurity: FG’s move to push Amotekun under IG’s supervision is arrant nonsense – Adebanjo

Elder statesman, Chief Ayo Adebanjo on Tuesday attacked the presidency for saying that the Inspector General of Police would determine the structure of Southwest regional security outfit, Amotekun.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu had said during a programme on Channels TV that the IGP would determine the structure of Amotekun.

Shehu was speaking on the approval of N13bn by the Federal Government for community policing across the 36 states of the federation.

He said, “Whatever name they go by, Amotekun or whatever, will be streamlined and they will be run in accordance with the structure as defined by the Inspector-General of Police. They will be localised, they will be owned by local communities, they will be managed by them.”

The President’s spokesman further stated that the community policing structure would be the same across the 36 states and whatever does not conform with the national structure would not be “in the scheme of things”.

But Adebanjo, in an interview rejected the presidency’s assertion, saying that they are ‘arrant nonsense.’

According to him, “What Shehu said is arrant nonsense! Is he the Attorney General (of the federation)? He is just talking trash. Please quote me.

“They are controlling the police from the centre, it is not working, now they want to control Amotekun again from the same position? Do you have an IG of police in America? Even in Britain, it is not centralized. What you have is metropolitan police.”

Adebanjo wondered: “How can you send someone from Jigawa State to control the police in Ibadan? What does he know? You say the Governors are the chief security officers of their states, yet they control nothing, what kind of arrangement is that?”

He said Shehu might not understand as the issue was beyond him.

He added: “I don’t want to engage him because he may not understand. The issue is beyond him. Amotekun is the case of localizing security, yet they want to control it from the Centre like the police, how?”

Over 10, 0000 apply for Amotekun job in Ondo

Over 10,000 applicants are jostling for recruitment into the Ondo State Security Network Agency, codenamed “Amotekun Corps”.

The State Commander, Amotekun Corps, Chief Adetunji Adeleye, who made the disclosure in Akure while engaging newsmen, said that the screening of the personnel is currently ongoing after which training of successful applicants will follow.

He promised to build an elite Corps that will be an envy of all and serve as a pacesetter.

Meanwhile, the corps have arrested 42 cows for destroying farmlands around Alagbaka extension in Akure metropolis.

According to Adeleye, the cows were arrested after a series of complaints by owners of the farmlands in the axis.

He said that ” over eight separate farmlands with crops such as maize and cassava were completely destroyed by Fulani herdsmen who usually graze their cows around the affected area. “The herders who were heavily armed chased away the farm owners who later contacted the Amotekun Corps.”

Adeleye said that “on seeing the owners of the affected farmlands, the heavily armed herders attempted to kill them but the farmers ran for their dear lives.

The Corps commander, Chief Adeleye and the arrested cows “When the joint security network including Agro-Rangers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) got to the scene, the herders again attempted to attack them but they were overpowered by the security operatives, leading to the arrest of the cows while the herders took to their heels.”

The corps commander warned the Fulani herdsmen in the state to desist from destroying another man’s property but rather rear their cows in confined areas to avoid wanton destruction of farmlands in any part of the state. He equally advised farmers not to result to self-help anytime they see cows destroying their crops but alert the Corps for necessary actions.

While decrying the level of destruction to the farmlands across the state by the herdsmen, Adeleye said the owners of the cows would be made to pay for the crops destroyed and subsequently face prosecution.

Farmers who narrated their ordeals said the herders have consistently grazed their cows on their farmlands, and that all complaints made to security agencies in the past have not yielded positive results.

They appealed to Amotekun Corps Commander to save them from the incessant attacks and harassment from Fulani herdsmen, saying the herders have destroyed their means of livelihood

  • Amotekun will fail in South-West states except, Lagos, Alao Akala predicts

Former governor of Oyo, Adedayo Alao-Alaka says Amotekun, a joint security outfit, will fail in south-west except in Lagos.

South-west governors had launched Amotekun on January 9, as a regional security initiative, but the initiative later became a state effort after meetings with the federal government.

Speaking on his memoirs titled: “Amazing Grace” which is scheduled for launch in June, as part of activities for his 70th birthday, the ex-governor said the security outfit will fail over leadership challenge.

He faulted the decision of the governors to appoint retired military officers as director-generals of the corps.

Alao-Akala, a former assistant commissioner of police, said police officers would have been a better option to occupy the position.

He said while a soldier is trained to lead wars, a police officer has better knowledge of internal security, which Amotekun is more concerned about.

“The Amotekun Corp will fail in the South-West states except for Lagos. The outfit is supposed to take care of the security of the people and their property across the zone but it will fail in every state except Lagos because the right people were not appointed to head it,” he said.

“You cannot expect a soldier to head Amotekun successfully. A police officer is trained specially on internal security management. If fundamentally the foundation is weak whatever you want to put on it would be weak. When you have a soldier there, he is taught how to kill. The governors don’t get it right by appointing ex-military men to head the outfits in the other states.

“If a retired senior police officer was appointed as the head of the Amotekun outfit in a state, the Commissioner of Police in the state would respect him as his former superior. A retired Army officer would want to be forceful in his approach. Remember that only the police can prosecute criminals, Amotekun cannot, so they need the cooperation of the police.

“The Amotekun personnel are not armed; they will be successful if they collaborate with the police by calling for support while trying to burst crimes in their respective states and localities.”

Like south-west, some other regions have established joint security outfits to tackle internal security challenges in the zones.
