CVR: INEC uncovers 27,817 multiple registrations in Anambra

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has uncovered 27, 817 multiple registrations from the just concluded Continuous Voter Registration in Anambra.

This is even as the commission added 146,353 new voters to the state voter register.

The commission disclosed this in a statement issued by its National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, on Thursday in Abuja.

Olumekun said that the commission met on Thursday and among other issues, deliberated on the final register of voters for the Nov. 8, Anambra governorship election.

He said that the commission also deliberated on the status of letters of intent from associations seeking registration as political parties.

He noted that in continuation of preparations for the forthcoming Anambra governorship election, the commission carried out voter registration in the 316 wards across the state between July 8 and 20.

He noted that during that period, 168,187 resident registered as new voters, adding that at the end of the registration exercise, INEC set aside July 26 and Aug. 1, for display of all new registrants in all the wards for claims and objections in line with Section 19(1) of the Electoral Act 2022.

He added that the commission furthermore scrutinised the list using the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) to detect invalid registrations.

“At the end of the process, 27,817 records were found to be double or multiple registrations and removed from the list.

“Consequently, the figure for new registrants now stands at 140,370 while valid applications for transfer into the State is 5,983, making a total of 146,353 new voters.

“Prior to the recent voter registration, Anambra had 2,656,437 registered voters. With the new registrants, the voters roll for the state now stands at 2,802,790,” he said.

According to Olumekun, distribution of the new figures by Local Government Area, shows that Idemili North with 246,318 (8.79 per cent) has the highest number of registered voters, followed by Awka South with 216,611 (7.73 per cent) and Ogbaru with 188,016 (6.71 per cent).

“Dunokofia and Anambra West have 83,580 (2.98 per cent) and 71,332 (2.55 per cent) registered voters respectively.”

He disclosed that the distribution of new voters by LGA was already uploaded to INEC website and other official platforms for public information.

He assured new voters in Anambra as well as those who applied for transfer or replacement of their lost or damaged Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) that their cards would be ready for collection before the state governorship election.

He also disclosed that the commission had received additional 19 more letters of intent from association seeking to be registered as political parties, bringing the total so far to 171 as at Sept 3.

Olumekun reiterated that a shortlist of the pre-qualified associations was being finalised for the next stage of application for registration.

He added that the committee reviewing the letters of intent had prepared its recommendations for final consideration by the commission.

He appealed to all the associations who submitted letters of intent to remain patient as INEC finalise the process.

“We also urge them to avoid frequent changes to their logos, acronyms and addresses or one association submitting multiple requests.

“Some associations have changed their interim leaderships, following defections to other associations or even existing political parties, thereby delaying the process,” Olumekun said.

He reassure the associations that INEC would treat all applications fairly, urging them to assist the process by remaining consistent.

“As always, the commission will continue to communicate with Nigerians on all its activities,” he said.

Olumekun noted that the latest update on the CVR and application had been uploaded to INEC website and other official platforms for public information.

Anambra Govt. bans writing of assignments in textbooks

The Anambra State Government has banned the writing of assignments by students in textbooks, describing the practice as wasteful and unsustainable.

The Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, issued the directive to schools on Friday in Awka, during a workshop organised for private school proprietors and teachers in the state.

Chuma-Udeh said that the decision to ban the practice was intended to make textbooks reusable, especially for younger siblings of students, who would need them when they advance to the next class.

She emphasised the importance of textbooks being inclusive, reflecting diversity, promoting equality and addressing the needs of all learners.

“The government will not tolerate non-compliance with the directive.

“I urge parents, teachers and school administrators to ensure strict adherence.

“Stakeholders should report cases of default to the Ministry of Education.

“The initiative is part of Gov. Chukwuma Soludo’s administration’s strategy to ease financial pressure on families, while promoting quality and sustainable education,” the commissioner said.

12 parties set to contest in Anambra South By-Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that 12 political parties will participate in the Anambra South Senatorial by-election scheduled for Aug. 16.

In addition, nine political parties will contest in the Onitsha North Constituency 1 bye-election for the Anambra State House of Assembly.

Recall that Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah, who represented Anambra South in the Senate, passed away in July, 2024.

Similarly, Mr Justice Azuka, lawmaker representing Onitsha North Constituency 1 in the Anambra State Assembly, died following his reported abduction by gunmen on Dec. 24, 2024.

The death of the legislators necessitated the conduct of a bye-election.

Dr Elizabeth Agwu, INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Anambra, affirmed the commission’s preparedness to conduct the up-coming bye-elections.

According to Agwu, non-sensitive election materials have already arrived in the state and have been distributed, while robust security measures are in place to ensure smooth conduct of the polls.

She also noted that the training of ad hoc staffers, including Presiding Officers (POs) and Assistant Presiding Officers (APOs), began on Friday and will concluded on Sunday across 15 local government areas in the state.

“To ensure the credibility of the bye-elections, individuals found culpable in previous exercises have been blacklisted, among other measures taken,’’ she said.

Agwu expressed concern that certain political parties are focusing on propaganda rather than genuine campaigning.

“Let me emphasised that everyone contesting in the elections is a candidate approved by INEC, but ultimately, it is the voters who will decide the winners,” she said.

NAN reports that some of the candidates contesting in the Anambra South Senatorial bye-election include: Mr Donald Amangbo of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Mr Azuka Okwuosa of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Also contesting are; Mr Peter Ekwueme of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Mr Azubuike Okoli of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) and Chief Emma Nwachukwu of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), among others.

Addressing newsmen on the outcome of Saturday’s raid, the Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike, said the operation followed months of surveillance and intelligence gathering.

Obidike said the raid was in collaboration with security agencies and officials of the Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra, otherwise called OCHA Brigade.

He said they stormed the hospital premises and arrested key members of the criminal network.

“The so-called hospital was found to be operating with a falsified licence, owned by a self-acclaimed medical doctor, Odili Ossai, from Delta.

“The authorities have confirmed that the syndicate was involved in the trafficking and exploitation of young girls, aged 15, 19 and 21.

“Many of the victims were reportedly held against their will and forced into pregnancies, with newborns sold to illegal adoption rings.

“Several teenage girls and infants were rescued during the raid and receiving comprehensive medical care and psychological support,” the commissioner said.

He also said that the relevant authorities had launched investigation and the suspects were expected to face charges, including human trafficking, unlawful detention and child exploitation.

Obidike described the raid as “a significant victory in the ongoing battle against child trafficking, human rights violations, and gender-based abuse”.

He emphasised government’s unwavering commitment to shutting down any illegal medical facility to safeguard public health.

“The Health Facility Accreditation and Monitoring Unit and Anti-Quackery Taskforce Team are set up to detect and shut down unauthorised health facilities in the state.

“We are determined to rid Anambra of fake medical practitioners and criminal networks that exploit the vulnerable.

“I urge residents to support government’s efforts by reporting suspicious activities related to healthcare practices.

“We are warning unlicensed, quack facilities to shut down immediately or face legal action.

“Public safety and dignity will not be compromised in Anambra,” he said.

Anambra Guber: No competition, other candidates just raising funds – Soludo

“After Soludo, power will shift back to Anambra Central. So, there is no contest or vacancy in Anambra State  Government House.

“As far as we are concerned, nobody else is contesting. The other contenders are just doing fundraising, meeting with state governors and seeking support.”

Soludo expressed gratitude to the people for their solidarity and support, promising to sustain the transformation and development agenda of his administration.

“You have not seen anything yet; this is just the beginning. We are already putting plans in place for a rail network in the state, and it will be unveiled soon.

“We applied for this job, and we will continue working to improve the welfare of our people. With your continued support, Anambra will be transformed. A new Anambra is on the rise,” he said.

Soludo urged APGA faithful to go to their wards and mobilise electorate to vote massively for APGA on Nov. 8.

Earlier,  Mr Chukwuma Okoye, Deputy Speaker, Anambra State House of Assembly, read a  communiqué on behalf of Anambra Central, endorsing Soludo’s candidacy and reaffirming support for the zoning formula to promote peace, equity, and progress.

A lawyer and one other individual were shot dead in Anambra State after attending a court session. The Anambra State Police Command has launched a manhunt for the suspected assailants responsible for the killings, which occurred in Egbebelu village, Ekwulobia, Orumba North Local Government Area.
