Anambra govt takes action on vigilante seen in viral video assaulting female corps members

The Anambra State Government has sacked several members of the Udo Ga Chi vigilante group after they assaulted and stripped a female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Jennifer Edema Elohor.

TheNewsGuru reports that the incident, captured in a viral video, showed the operatives pointing pump-action rifles while attacking her.

Prince Emeakayi, Special Adviser on Homeland Security to Governor Chukwuma Soludo, confirmed the dismissals and condemned the operatives’ behaviour.

He described their actions as unpatriotic and not reflective of the intended security duties of the Agunaechemba unit of Udo Ga Chi.

The government stated that it is ready to hand over the former operatives for prosecution once the police request it.

It also stated that the state is working with the police to train vigilante members on proper security management, with each operative carrying an identification number on their uniform.

“The action of the security operatives are condemnable, and, as such all the operative involved in that despicable action of stripping the NYSC member naked have been disengaged from the state government’s vigilant service.

“Whenever the state police command is ready for their prosecution, as a government we will produce them,” Emeakayi said in an interview on Arise TV on Tuesday morning.

Anambra Govt. offers children with sickle cell disorder free health insurance

The Anambra State Health Insurance Agency (ASHIA) is collaborating with the state ministry of health to offer free health insurance to children living with sickle cell disorder.

Dr Simeon Onyemaechi, Managing Director, ASHIA, said this during the registration of no fewer than 20 children living with sickle cell disorder in his office in Awka on Tuesday.

Onyemaechi, represented by Dr Ngozika Ifediora, State Officer of the agency, said that managing sickle cell could be financially draining for parents and adults who are sickle cell patients.

“The agency is happy to lend a helping hand in shouldering the financial burden associated with managing the health challenges of sickle cell disorder.

“ASHIA will continue to support children living with sickle cell disorder in the state,” he said.

Earlier, Mrs Aisha Edward-Maduagwu, Director, Sickle Cell Orphanage and Underprivileged Home in Agulu, described sickle cell disorder as a genetic disorder which caused a mishap to the shape of the red blood cell.

This, she said, gave it a sickle shape and the disruption in the shape was responsible for many complications associated with the disorder.

According to the director, due to the complications of sickle cell disorder, people living with sickle cell require constant care, which involves an excessive financial cost.

“The management of sickle cell requires routine drugs, frequent medical checkup, routine blood tests, emergency hospitalisations for painful crisis and other health issues.

“This is why health insurance is required to support the management of this disorder.

“We appreciate the Anambra state governor, the state commissioner for health and Dr Simeon Onyemaechi for their magnanimity towards children with functional needs.

“We also urge the government to continue to pay more attention to the sickle cell orphanage home as more children need assistance to keep living,” Edward-Maduagwu said.

Anambra gov’t meets IPMAN over debts, blames delay on bloated claims

The Anambra government on Tuesday met with leadership of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) over debt claims by some marketers who supplied diesel for streetlight generating sets.

Mr TonyCollins Nwabunwanne, the state Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, led the government team while Mr Chinedu Anyaso, chairman of IPMAN Enugu Depot Community, led the marketers in company of his executive members and some of the contractors.

Speaking to newsmen, Nwabunwanne said the delay in payment was due to discrepancies and bloated bills which some of the contractors submitted.

The Commissioner, who described meeting with the marketers as productive, said Anambra government was willing and ready to pay the contractors as soon as the inconsistencies in claims are cleared.

He promised to present their plights to the governor in the coming days for his consideration.

“We had a fruitful meeting, the marketers agreed that the blame is not entirely on government but that of the contractors, some of whom have made bloated claims.

“But we have considered all that, we are making the necessary adjustments and very soon, Mr Governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, will issue a directive,” he said.

On his part, Anyaso thanked the Commissioner for his prompt response to their plea.

Anyaso said IPMAN was satisfied with the outcome of the meeting and was hopeful that Soludo would act swiftly as promised in the interest of marketers and contractors.

“I want to thank Gov. Soludo for the prompt response we got after complaining to him about the debt to our members and the effect on their businesses.

“The Commissioner explained the issues to us and we understand better, but more importantly, we look forward to the fulfillment of the promises made in the meeting,” he said.

IPMAN had complained about the non payment of about N900 million owed contractors and marketers who supplied diesel to the Anambra government for powering streetlight generators.

Orgy Party: Government shuts down hotel over X-rated video

Recall that a video surfaced online where live sex was taking place at a pool side of a hotel and onlookers were seen capturing and cheering the participants.

Meanwhile, Mr Donatus Onyenji, Commissioner for Culture, Entertainment and Tourism who signed a seal order said the action was to enable government and security agencies conduct further investigation on the matter.

Onyenji said the closure was in line with the Anambra State Tourism and Hospitality Law of 2016.

Watchlist: Anambra Government dares EFCC, says Gov Obiano not in Nigeria, will relocate to US after handing over

Anambra State government has reacted to the placement of the state governor Willie Obiano on the watchlist by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The anti-graft agency had earlier written a letter to the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) requesting the immigration to place Governor Obiano on a watchlist and inform it anytime he is travelling out of the country from any of the international airports, as well as other points of entry and exit.

In reaction to this, Anambra State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Don Adinuba said the governor has four months left to remain in office and the commission went to far by publicly announcing that it is investigating Governor Obiano.

“Governor Obiano has a whole four months to remain in office as the Anambra State chief executive. Nobody in Nigeria can circumscribe his constitutionally conferred immunity which shields him from both criminal and civil prosecution.

“The EFCC went too far to announce in November that it is observing him. We are not aware of any state governor who had up to four months to be in office and the EFCC went on to sponsor media reports that he was being investigated,” Adinuba said in a press statement signed on Thursday.

EFFC’s Inelegant Drama over Anambra Governor

    1. Nigerians were dismayed that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) went a new low on Wednesday, November 24, 2021, when it sponsored media reports claiming that it has placed Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State on its watch list. The EFCC provided no details of how Governor Obiano has been placed on its watch list, but made a reference to a letter it purportedly wrote on November 15, 2021, to the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) asking it to inform the anti-graft agency anytime the governor is travelling out of the country.

    1. Everything that can be wrong with politically motivated statements like this one is obviously wrong with this statement. The EFCC knows full well that it is acting inelegantly in this instance, and so has tried as much as possible not to make an official public statement on the alleged placing of Chief Obiano on the watch list. It furtively gave a section of the media the news report it wrote based on ostensibly its letter to the NIS on November 15.

    1. Governor Obiano is out of the country currently. And he travelled through one of the country’s international airports. He did not disguise himself, but rather left the country with his identity fully disclosed at the necessary immigration point.

    1. The EFCC sounded more inelegant when it claimed in the sponsored press report that it received intelligence reports that the governor plans to “flee” from Nigeria once he hands over power next March 17 to the newly elected Anambra State governor, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo. Chief Obiano has never left any persons in doubt that he will relocate to his base in the United States once he finishes his tenure. As early as Wednesday, March 4, 2020, he announced his decision to a meeting of the Anambra State Council of Elders, comprising such personages as the erstwhile Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Chief Emeka Anyaoku; the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe who is also the chairman of both the Anambra State Council of Traditional Rulers and the Southeast Council of Traditional Rulers; a former Anambra State governor, Dr Chukwuemeka Ezeife; an ex-Minister of Women Affairs, Iyom Josephine Anenih, mni; the founding Director General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Professor Elochukwu Amucheazi; the Archbishop Emeritus of the Anglican Church in Anambra State, The Most Reverend Dr Maxwell Anikwenwa; and the Catholic Bishop of the Awka Diocese, Rev Dr Paulinus Ezeokafor.

    1. Governor Obiano has a whole four months to remain in office as the Anambra State chief executive. Nobody in Nigeria can circumscribe his constitutionally conferred immunity which shields him from both criminal and civil prosecution. The EFCC went too far to announce in November that it is observing him. We are not aware of any state governor who had up to four months to be in office and the EFCC went on to sponsor media reports that he was being investigated.

    1. It is, indeed strange that the EFCC is making a show that it is investigating a high public officer. Anti-corruption agencies, like intelligence services, conduct their investigations discreetly, and not on pages of newspapers. Media trial has never benefitted the EFCC.

    1. The whole nation knows those behind all the present histrionics about Obiano. They are those who didn’t want the November 6 election to hold. They are those in high places who unsuccessfully canvassed for emergency rule in Anambra supposedly on security grounds. They are those who masterminded the Birnin Kudu High Court charade in Jigawa State over the APGA leadership and, more importantly, the authentic APGA candidate in the November gubernatorial election in Anambra State. They are those responsible for the sacrilege of a customary court in Abuja issuing criminal summons to Professor Soludo, a former Central Bank of Nigeria governor. These people are still fighting the gubernatorial battle on behalf of their badly defeated friends and political associates in the Anambra vote. They will fail badly, as they have done in the recent past.

    1. The EFCC should not allow itself to be used by politicians who are mere birds of passage. Its ongoing Anambra drama is in bad taste. It did not serve Governor Obiano any notice. Nor did it invite him to answer questions about his service record. It just went to the press. Yet, the governor is willing to answer any questions about his years in office. After all, he has received a prestigious award from the United Nations Development Programme for social service integrity.

God bless Anambra State, the Light of the Nation.

    Signed

  • Anambra Government reacts to reports of mass departure of voters for fear of attacks

Anambra Government reacts to reports of mass departure of voters for fear of attacks

The Anambra State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Mr C. Don Adinuba, has said that a report in the public domain that people are leaving the state in large number is false.

Recall that reports had emerged ahead of the Saturday’s Anambra governorship election that some people are leaving the state.

Adinuba said a large number of people, especially qualified voters, are pouring into Anambra to participate in today’s governorship election, opening in just a few hours.

The commissioner made the claim in a press statement, made available to newsmen on Saturday morning in Awka.

According to him, the attention of the Anambra government was drawn to a sensational news item claiming that people are leaving Anambra on account of political violence.

Adinuba refuted the report, saying that Anambra people aren’t expressing fears of any possible political violence before and during the vote.

He said that the report is utterly false and disinformation, saying, “Our people are very conscious of their roots, and so usually register to vote in the state even when they live and work elsewhere,” he said.

Adinuba said that many people who work in towns and cities in Anambra usually register in their home communities and with the declaration of Thursday and Friday as work-free days for state employees, many people have travelled to their various places to vote.

He said that a lot of people have in the last 24 hours been leaving cities and towns for their home communities where they have influence and choose to vote.

“It is, therefore, wrong for any news medium to claim that Anambra people are leaving the state in droves for fear of political violence.

“If the journalist who wrote the report claiming an exodus had bothered to seek clarification or explanation of the new development, he wouldn’t have written the sensational report.

“It is surprising that a journalist could file such a report without checking with the government, despite the well-known, open-door policy of this administration towards the media,” Adinuba said.

He, however, urged all Anambra people to disregard ill-planned reports and come out early to cast their votes for their preferred candidate.

  • Anambra Government consoles Ihiala people over market fire, pledges to help build standard Market

Anambra Government consoles Ihiala people over market fire, pledges to help build standard Market

The Anambra State Government has consoled Ihiala people over the fire which destroyed their major market this afternoon, promising to lead the mobilization of the people in planning, designing and building a modern market in the town.

In a message to the people sent through the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Mr C. Don Adinuba, who is an indigene of the town; the chairman of the Ihiala Local Government Transition Committee, Engineer Jeff Obi; and the Traditional Ruler of Ihiala, Igwe Thomas Obidiegwu, as well as the President General of the Ihiala progress Union, Chief Okey Chukwu, Governor Willie Obiano regretted that “a good number of both the indigenes of the town and people from elsewhere, including outside the state, have lost their means of livelihood”.

The fire, noted the governor, claimed not just buildings and market stalls but also vital goods and perhaps even raw cash.

He said: “This is the wrong time for such a disaster to occur, especially given the prevailing economic condition in the country”.

Chief Obiano promised that a panel would be set up to determine the causes of the fire and also make suggestions on how to prevent possible reoccurrences, noting that “this is the fourth time a fire has occurred in and around this major market in recent years”.

He said his administration would seek to complete the establishment of a fire service in the town, but observed that the facility would be of little value in the market if it is not provided amenities like access roads.

“A situation where the few available access roads in the market are converted to shops which makes it difficult for fire trucks to move into the market to extinguish fire is unacceptable”, he declared.

The governor also remarked that the Nkwogbe market, built in the 1950s, is no longer adequate to meet the challenges of the modern times.

“The market”, he stated, was built “with highly inflammable materials like corrugated iron sheets and planks, and people sold combustible goods like petrol and keresone in all parts”.

Chief Obiano described a standard market well planned with sanitary facilities, an efficient fire service and state of the art electricity as a “desideratum”.

He announced that the state government would work with the Ihiala Progress Union, the Igwe in Council, the Ihiala Local Government, prominent people from the town and other stakeholders like the traders union and the Anambra State Ministry of Trade and Commerce to provide a befitting market.

Governor Obiano described the Anambra State Fire Service officers from Nnewi who extinguished the fire as good professionals, adding that when the fire service station in Ihiala “is completed, there will not be a need for firemen to come from other towns to fight in Ihiala except to reinforce or support local efforts”.

He also lauded Ihiala youth for volunteering to fight the fire before the arrival of firefighters and for cooperating with them when they arrived.

He asked some other communities to learn from Ihiala youth and cooperate with firefighters rather than block their work.

Nigerian Democracy on the march, judiciary on right path; Anambra Government lauds S’Court verdict affirming Oye as APGA chair, Soludo as flag bearer

The Anambra State Government has hailed the Supreme Court judgement affirming Victor Oye as the authentic National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and Charles Soludo as the party’s flag bearer in the forthcoming governorship election in the state.

Reacting to the verdict which was delivered yesterday, the Commissioner for Information C. Don Adinuba in a statement signed and released on behalf of the Anambra State Government said the Supreme Court has once again demonstrated that it is the temple of justice.

    Read full statement below:

Anambra Welcomes Supreme Court Verdict On APGA Leadership

    1. The people and Government of Anambra State have received with joy, like the rest of Nigeria, the Supreme Court judgment this morning upholding the decision of the Court of Appeal sitting in Kano that Chief Victor Oye is the authentic National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). He is, therefore, the right and proper person to submit the name of the APGA candidate in the November 6 gubernatorial election in Anambra State to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). His submission of the name of the former Central Bank governor, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, to INEC as the APGA candidate in the forthcoming election following the Anambra State Congress of the party held on June 23, 2021, which Professor Soludo won overwhelmingly in a peaceful and transparent manner, was in accordance with the extant laws of the land.

    2. The Supreme Court has, once again, demonstrated that the Nigerian judiciary is a temple of justice. It does not just give judgments but also dispenses justice. It does not just comply with the letter of the law but also acts in accordance with the spirit of the law. It provides hope for not just the common man but also all citizens, regardless of class, gender, ethnicity or faith.

    3. There is massive rejoicing throughout Anambra State and, indeed, all over Nigeria at the Supreme Court judgment. The people feel justice has been done. The Supreme Court justices have met the expectations and wishes of the people. In other words, public confidence in the judiciary has been restored, despite the activities of a few members of the Bench like Mr Justice Musa Ubale of the Jigawa State High Court at Birnin Kudu who last June 30 gave a preposterous judgment over the APGA leadership by assuming territorial jurisdiction over a development which happened in Awka, Anambra State. It was a new low for the country’s judiciary.

    4. The Supreme Court should not stop at providing the right judgments on cases but punish members of both the Bar who bring to courts matters meant to ridicule the judiciary and of the Bench who entertain such suits and pass judgments on them. The Honorable Justice Chioma Nwosu-Iheme of the Court of Appeal in Awka served as the conscience of the nation when she in the open court on Tuesday, August 3, excoriated such legal professionals who run helter-skelter from one court to another in Birnin Kudu and Owerri as well as Enugu in what lawyers call forum shopping. The Section on Public Interest and Development Law of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), led by Dr Monday Ubani, also lived up to its reputation as the conscience of our society when it criticized such lawyers, particularly senior lawyers among them, whose conduct brings their profession to public odium. The NBA led by Olumide Akpata also rose to the challenge of the day by not only criticizing such members of the Bar and Bench but also setting up a panel to look into their behavior.

    5. Nigerian democracy is on the march. And the judiciary is on the right path. God bless Nigeria.

    Signed
