Anambra poll: APC will challenge Soludo’s declaration, party chairman confirms

    From Chuks Collins, Awka

The declaration of Prof Chukwuma Soludo as winner of the just concluded November 6,2021 Anambra State Governorship election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is going to be challenged by the All Progressives Congress (APC). This is authentic!

This confirmation was given in Awka late afternoon Sunday, November 28, 2021 in a press interview by the State Chairman of the party, Chief Basil Ejidike.

The chairman also fingered the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Senator Chris Ngige as being the brain behind all the past and present crises rocking the party in the state.

Speaking to our reporter ahead the day’s scheduled State Working Committee meeting of the party, Ejidike noted that, “ after the party primaries of June 26, 2021, and the result was announced by the party Ngige and his boys led the team that objected. And the protestations by some of the aspirants was clearly on the prompting of Senator Ngige. Their was because he immediately after the announcement of the result summoned and encouraged them to reject and denounce the primary election result. This was even when Mr President had given his blessings and presented the flag to our party’s candidate, Distinguished Senator Andy Uba. They still resisted the position.

“I want to ask, is that the way a committed party man should function? If there is no discipline in any organization, that organization will not stand.

“Come to think of it, if you check the records of the results from the polling units of these so-called leaders, starting from the 2017 poll you will find out that they all failed in their polling units, Wards and Council Areas. So if that was the situation, what then makes them leaders or stakeholders of the party?

“However, the truth of the matter is that we are now very determined to reposition the party in order to make it stronger and formidable to withstand future political challenges successfully. Because we cannot continue to live in a circle and not move forward”, he concluded.

He however pointed out that the party has now resolved to instill more discipline in its ranks so as to make progress.

On the issue of going to Election Petitions tribunal to challenge the outcome of the Nov 6 poll, Chief Ejidike pointed out that, “…we have resolved to go to tribunal to challenge the outcome of the election.

“This is because we are very convinced that the right things were not done. We are going to file our petition to challenge the outcome and declaration; that is if the Legal team has not done so already. We are going to pursue the matter to its logical conclusion.”

How we successfully pacify aggrieved youths not to disrupt Anambra poll – Ex-APGA Chairman

Senator Victor Umeh has explained how the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) was able to pacify some aggrieved youths not to disrupt the November 6 governorship election in Anambra State.

Prior to the build-up of the election, there was a palpable fear of the crucial poll not holding due to the palpable insecurity in the south-eastern state.

In addition, security formations have been attacked with operatives killed, as well as many innocent residents of Anambra State, notably Dr Chike Akunyili, the husband of the late boss of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Dora Akunyili,

Speaking on Wednesday on a monitored interview on Channels Television, the former APGA National Chairman said the party, traditional rulers and religious leaders reached out to the youths to ensure that the poll was held smoothly.

He equally commended President Muhammadu Buhari for dominating the state with more security operatives to erase the fears that gripped the electorates.

“Through negotiations, on November 4, the IPOB declared openly that people should go and vote in the election and the sit-at-home order which they had issued for one week beginning from November 5, the order was lifted,” he said.

“The greater commendation will go to our traditional rulers and traditional leaders. We had to resort to reaching out to our young people, the people who have been threatening that there won’t be an election in Anambra State.”

While noting that the young people had every reason to be aggrieved, the APGA chieftain explained that the several appeals paid off as they conveyed the message to their people to take things easy.

This is even as he noted that the issues of marginalisation of the Igbos will be properly addressed in the Nigerian polity through dialogue and persuasion.

Anambra poll: YPP candidate, Ifeanyi Ubah congratulates Soludo, says he won’t challenge victory in court

The candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP), Ifeanyi Ubah, has congratulated the Governor-elect of Anambra State, Charles Soludo.

Ubah, who represents Anambra South senatorial district, commended Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) for his victory in the just-concluded governorship election in the state.

In a statement on Wednesday, the lawmaker stated that he has no plan to challenge the election results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

As a result, he asked other contestants in the governorship race to move on and follow suit in the path of honour not to contest the results in court.

According to Ubah, the journey so far has not been that of roses, but one full of trials, triumphs, ups and downs.

He added that in the face of intimidating challenges and complexities, YPP displayed indomitable courage as the party came fourth in the poll.

The YPP candidate stated that the outcome of the election was not what the party wanted and worked so hard for.

He said while some people have expressed mixed feelings and reactions about the purported anomalies witnessed across numerous polling units, the collective interest of the state must be the paramount focus.

SENATOR IFEANYI UBAH CONGRATULATES PROF. CHARLES SOLUDO ON HIS ELECTORAL VICTORY.

…APPRECIATES FAMILY, FRIENDS AND SUPPORTERS FOR THEIR SUPPORT AND STEADFASTNESS.

    Umunne M Ndi Anambra,

I have just called the newly elected Governor of our dear State; Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo to congratulate him on his victory at the just-concluded November 6, 2021, Anambra Governorship poll.

To everything, there is a season, so the Holy Bible says.

It is with a heart full of gratitude and submission to the will of God that I address you all today, having enjoyed the unique privilege of earning your support to seek the Governorship office of our dear State Anambra.

The past months have been defining for us in several respects. In the build-up to this election, we were bound together by the will and shared vision that now is the time for our state to chart a new course, to make life better and more meaningful for our people. We unveiled a strategic agenda for a new, better and prosperous Anambra.

After watching the fortunes of Anambra State dwindle for years, we collectively embarked on this journey to translate to reality, the dreams of a better future and shared prosperity for the people of Anambra State. In all, we gave our very best, for conscience and for posterity.

Our journey has not been that of roses. Our journey has been full of trials, triumphs, ups and downs; nonetheless, in the face of intimidating challenges and complexities, we displayed indomitable courage.

Umunne m, this is not the outcome that we wanted and worked so hard for. Although some people have expressed mixed feelings and reactions about the anomalies witnessed across numerous polling units. However, the collective interest of the state must be our paramount focus. Not minding the outcome of the elections, I feel pride and gratitude for this formidable campaign that we waged irrespective of the pervasive security crisis that did not allow us to maximize our full campaign potentials in the nooks and crannies of the State.

Retrospectively, it is incontrovertible to state that our campaign has helped expand the wider narrative of democracy and good governance in Anambra State. In spite of the outcome of this election, our dreams of a better Anambra State remain sacrosanct.

    As a Democrat and law-abiding citizen, I wholeheartedly accept the outcome of the election and would like to use this medium to congratulate Prof. Charles Soludo on his victory. It is imperative to state that I do not intend to challenge the electoral results as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) through any court or judicial process;

    (1) APC:43,285

    (2) APGA:112,229

    (3) PDP:53,807

    (4) YPP:21,261

    (5) A: 2,054

    (6) AA: 83

    (7) AAC: 588

    (8) ADC: 324

    (9) ADP: 773

    (10) APN: 301

    (11) APP: 139

    (12) BP: 186

    (13) LP: 2,802

    (14) NNPP: 117

    (15) NRM: 213

    (16) SDP: 842

    (17) ZLP: 2,082

    (18) PRP: 437

I, therefore, urge my fellow contestants to move on and thread this same path of honour.

    Irrespective of all the challenges that we faced; the electoral result proves that YPP is here to stay;

    APGA – 19 LGAs

    PDP – 1 LGA

    YPP – 1 LGA

    APC – 0

Therefore, we will work assiduously to ensure that we reposition our party for greater heights.

At this juncture, I want to urge our incoming Governor to conduct Local Government elections and grant full financial autonomy to our LGAs in order for them to bring dividends of democracy to the grassroots. I also want to enjoin Prof. Soludo to always engage Anambrarians in the Diaspora as critical stakeholders. As a commercially viable state, our traders must be supported and given the requisite incentives to grow.

There is an urgent need to adopt a proactive, intelligence-based, and technology-driven approach to tackle the prevailing issue of insecurity in our dear State Anambra through networking and strategic information dissemination.

I urge our Governor-elect to promote rapid Industrialisation and work in harmony with members of the National Assembly in the state so as to harness the instrumentality of the National Assembly to create a synergy between the Federal and State Government. Improved health tourism must also be at the centre stage of his administration’s policy thrust.

Our dear State Anambra is a land of opportunities; a home for everyone and the “Light of the Nation”. It is therefore a point of duty and responsibility to correct the ills of the previous administration and ensure that we remain a centre of opportunities and growth for everyone; a place where Anambrarians can achieve their dreams and aspirations.

To my wife and the children, who had to endure many months, days, and nights without me; I thank you for your love and steadfastness. You will continue to be my pillar of strength.

I salute the men, women and youths who believed and demonstrated their faith by investing their time and resources in my campaign. Thank you for staying the course!

I am immensely grateful to my friends too numerous to mention (home and abroad), party leadership and members, well-wishers and loyal supporters who so generously contributed their time and effort to my campaign during this long election season. I thank you all immensely for your support and encouragement because without your magnanimous inputs we would have never been this daring and impactful. Thank you for the prayers, courage, generosity, and love that I witnessed during this campaign.

I also wish to commend my fellow candidates for their exemplary candour and sportsmanship throughout the course of the campaign.

Conclusively, I have gallantly moved on to the next phase of my life and have forgiven all and sundry, including my trusted allies that worked against me.

As we anticipate with enthusiasm, the start of the next dispensation led by Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, I commit the entire leadership and citizenry of Anambra State into the safe hands of the Almighty God, on whose shoulder, the governance of our dear State has rested from the inception.

In all, we reckon and submit to the supremacy of God’s will.

    All power belongs to God!

    Senator (Dr.) Ifeanyi Ubah

    Anambra South Senatorial District.

  • Saraki lauds Nigerians, INEC on Success of Anambra Polls

Saraki lauds Nigerians, INEC on Success of Anambra Polls

Immediate Past Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki has congratulated Nigerians, particularly the people of Anambra State for the successful completion of the gubernatorial elections in Anambra State after the uncertainty and fear that the election would either not hold or be marred by violence. He also advised the people not to allow the crucial lessons which the results of the elections signified to go unnoticed or ignored.

Saraki in a statement signed on his behalf by the Head of his Media Office, Yusuph Olaniyonu, commended the stakeholders and other people who initiated and participated in the dialogue that eventually created the peaceful atmosphere that pervaded the period immediately before, during, and after the election.

He further praised the security agencies for the diligence and professionalism displayed by the officers and men on duty who rose to the occasion by ensuring smooth conduct of the polls without any serious breach of peace.

He also lauded the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the successful deployment of technology to improve the election process, particularly the adoption of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and electronic transmission of results.

He stated that the results of the elections have justified the fact that the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System and electronic transmission of results are possible in Nigeria and can help to minimise incidents of fraud while enthroning the era of free, fair, and credible polls as they discourage ballot stuffing and alteration of authentic results by fraudulent officials.

He added that though there were some hitches recorded during the weekend polls, he urged INEC not to be deterred but to go back to the drawing board to improve on the areas where there were setbacks.

“One of the areas that need to be improved is the time spent on accreditation of voters. It can be frustrating when voters have to spend many quality hours on the queue before they can be accredited to vote.

“It should be clear to members of the National Assembly that they have done the right thing by turning around to support inclusion of the provision on electronic transmission of results in the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill 2019. They should quickly conclude work on the Bill and forward it without any further delay to the President. It will also be good if the President can sign the bill into law before the end of the year”, he stated.

The former Governor of Kwara State further appealed to youths who have been discouraged from registering to vote because they are not sure their votes will count or that the transparency of the electoral process can be guaranteed to have a change of mind.

“In my interactions with a lot of youths, I could see that they do not have confidence in the electoral process and that is why they have either not registered to vote or they stayed away from the polling stations on election day. I want to appeal to the youths to see the Anambra State elections as an indication of positive efforts being made to improve the process. So, they should go out and register in other to boost the turnout in subsequent elections across the country.

“The Anambra State electorate has taught the rest of Nigeria a lesson about the need for people to vote according to their conscience, to conduct polls devoid of violence, and stand firm in defence of our votes. All stakeholders also have to work on the issue of vote-buying. It is a problem which we must find a solution to, otherwise, it will continue to undermine our democracy. These are some of the lessons from Anambra State which must not be ignored.

“While I congratulate the winner of the elections, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, I believe that it is Nigeria and her democracy that won from the results and the conduct of the Anambra State polls. Once again, we have shown that our country can pull back from the brink and refrain from descending into the abyss. I enjoin the government and opinion leaders in the South-East to build on the discussions that led to the peace that reigned in the Anambra State during the elections so that we can have full return of peace across the South-east region. Once again, congratulations to Nigeria and Nigerians”, Saraki stated.

  • Police, Army speak on readiness for Anambra poll

Police, Army speak on readiness for Anambra poll

The Nigeria Police Force and Nigerian Army have pledged adequate preparedness to forestall security breach in Saturday (today’s) governorship poll in Anambra State.

Commissioner of Police and Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba assured residents that the security set up ahead of the governorship election is intact.

“The entire security arrangement that we’ve already put in place remains intact,” Mr Mba said on Friday on a monitored Channels Television programme.

“Our men are fully on the ground; we made a pledge with the people of Anambra state and that pledge is that we will remain politically neutral in the course of our duties in the state. We also pledged to provide a level playing field for all political actors to play out their political games and exercise their franchise without hindrance”.

The Police PRO also spoke to the redeployment of the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Joseph Egbunike, to the Federal Capital Territory, on the even of the highly anticipated election.

Egbunike had been deployed to Anambra State as the coordinator of the security component for the elections on October 26 and according to Mr Mba, the fact that the DIG was from Anambra State had its own pros and cons.

He, however, noted that deployment had already served its purpose.

Speaking further, the PPRO assured the people of Anambra State that the security personnel will be “friendly and citizen-oriented”.

“We don’t want our presence to be a deterrent but a factor that would build confidence in citizens,” he added.

    We remain apolitical – Army

The Nigerian Army on its part said it remained apolitical and will carry out its constitutional role of aiding civil authority to provide internal security without bias.

The army’s position was contained in a statement on Thursday by Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, the Director of Army Public Relations.

In the statement, Nwachukwu said that the force has again noted the desperation of conflict merchants to discredit its constitutional duties.

“The mischief-makers, using social media, shared a video alleging that soldiers were escorting buses filled with fake voters into Anambra State.

“Even though such despicable propaganda images can easily be punctured by any keen observer, for the sake of posterity, we wish to state without equivocation that no soldier of the Nigerian Army indulged in escorting fake voters into Anambra State.

“Contrary to the misleading information, the buses in question were conveying INEC permanent and ad-hoc staff for election tasks in Anambra State.

“The Federal Ministry of Information and Culture has corroborated this position. We, therefore, urge the general public to please disregard the report, as it is clearly misinformation,” the army spokesman explained.

He further noted that the army’s duty in Anambra is purely security-related and in support of the Nigeria Police, the lead security agency in the electioneering security architecture.

According to him, this is done in collaboration with other security agencies to ensure a safe and secure atmosphere for the peaceful conduct of elections.

“Our troops are guided by extant provisions of Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) Personnel Code of Conduct during elections and the provisions of Armed Forces Act CAP A20 LFN 2004. We shall continue to operate along these lines to ensure that peace and security reign in our country.

“We will remain apolitical and very professional in deeds and conduct for the growth and development of democracy in Nigeria. We also encourage the political gladiators to refrain from dragging the Nigerian Army and indeed the Armed Forces of Nigeria into the murky waters of politics.

“We assure all Nigerians that the NA remains resolute in carrying out her constitutional duties,” he added.

The army through its spokesman urged the people of Anambra not to panic, stressing that the military sincerely appreciates the citizens for being law-abiding and supporting the joint security agencies who are toiling relentlessly to ensure peace and security in the state.

Anambra Poll: IGP orders restriction of vehicular movement

Ahead of Saturday’s governorship election in Anambra, the Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, has ordered the restriction of vehicular movement in the state.

The IGP in a statement issued on Thursday said the restriction is part of measures aimed at protecting the sanctity of the electoral process on November 6.

According to the statement, there would be no movement of vehicles in and out of Anambra State from 11:59 pm on Friday, November 5 to 11:59 pm on Saturday, November 6.

“The IGP noted that the restriction order has become necessary following pointers from the Election Security Threats Assessments conducted by the Force which indicate a high likelihood of infiltration by criminally-minded individuals to Anambra State, before, during and after the polls,” the statement read.

“The IGP further noted that the measure would also avail security forces a firm grip of the State to checkmate the movement of political thugs and touts, and prevent the free flow, circulation and use of illicit arms and hard drugs throughout the period and beyond.”

He equally enjoined officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), accredited observers and journalists, and other authorized officials to go about their lawful duties as it relates to the elections, provided they observe all relevant rules guiding their deployment including the visible display of their accreditation tags.

This is even as the police chief assured that police officers and other security personnel deployed for the election will be appropriately supervised to ensure they carry out their responsibilities in the most humane, firm and professional manner especially to emergency service providers such as fire-fighters and ambulance services.

Baba enjoined citizens particularly motorists and travellers who may want to use the routes within Anambra State during the period of the restrictions to seek alternative routes and see the inconveniences as part of sacrifices toward the collective sustenance of our democracy.

While noting that the Force and other security agencies are already on ground to ensure a safe and conducive environment for the elections, the IGP asked citizens in the state to go out en-masse on the Election Day and exercise their franchise without any fear or apprehension.

  • Anambra Poll: Top governorship candidates sign peace accord

Anambra Poll: Top governorship candidates sign peace accord

Candidates in the imminent Anambra governorship election on Thursday signed a peace accord in Awka, the state captial.

The election is slated for Saturday.

Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, was present at the ceremony, which was facilitated by the National Peace Committee.

The NPC is chaired by former military Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar.

Ifeanyi Uba of the Young Progressives Party (YPP), Andy Uba of the All Progressives Congress and Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) were among the signees on Thursday.

Others were Valentine Ozigbo of the Peoples Democratic Party, Godwin Maduka of the Accord Party (AP), Etiaba Chukwuogo of the Action Alliance (AA), Nwankwo Chidozie of the African Action Congress (AAC), Onyejegbu Okwudili of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Ohajimkpo Emeka of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Ezenwafor Victor of the National Rescue Movement (NRM), Nnamdi Nwawuo of the People’s Redemption Party (PRP), Uzo Godwin of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), and Okonkwo Francis of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).

Anambra, as in much of the South-East, has witnessed several ‘gunmen’ attacks, casting doubts on the safety of the elections.

The proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has also threatened the sanctity of the election if its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, is not released from detention.

But the Federal Government has beefed up security in the state, pledging a free and fair poll.

On Tuesday, Senate minority leader, Enyinnaya Abaribe urged voters to show up at the polls, noting that the elections will be safe.

The accord is equally binding on the candidate’s political parties and is expected to encourage signees to take proactive steps “towards ensuring a conducive environment for the conduct of a credible electoral process.”

The signees also pledged to “fully abide by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, to respect the rules and regulations as laid down in the Legal Framework for Elections in Nigeria, and to adhere to best international standards.”

Under the accord, the candidates and their parties are expected to “support all institutions of government involved in conducting or securing the elections – in particular INEC and the security forces – to act with professionalism, impartiality and transparency.”

They are also to “encourage state agencies, institutions and public officers not to support partisan interests in any form” and to “encourage their political stalwarts and supporters to desist from propagating fake news and publishing fake results via social media and to ensure uninterrupted and uncompromised freedom of expression and information, both online and offline, throughout the electoral process.”

The accord demands of the signees to “respect that the results can only be announced by INEC, and to accept the outcome of the vote, as long as it is adjudged to be free, fair and credible, devoid of intimidation and conducted in accordance with the provisions of the law.”

  • Anambra 2021: INEC dashes hopes of 78 political parties, says only 18 are recognised

Anambra 2021: INEC dashes hopes of 78 political parties, says only 18 are recognised

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it will continue to recognise and deal with only the 18 registered political parties, pending the final resolution and determination of the various appeals filed and pending before the Supreme Court.

In a statement on Friday by its National Commissioner and Chairman of Voter Education and Publicity Committee, Festus Okoye, it asked the 74 deregistered political parties to await the judgement of the apex court on appeals relating to the powers of INEC to deregister political parties in accordance with section 225A of the Constitution.

The commission, however, stated that it was always ready to obey court orders and would abide by any judgement delivered by the Supreme Court.

“This statement has become necessary against the backdrop of various letters submitted to the commission recently by some of the deregistered political parties signifying their intention to conduct primaries with a view to submitting names and particulars of candidates for the Anambra Governorship election.

“The deregistered parties hinge their request to nominate candidates on the judgement of the Court of Appeal delivered on June 11, 2020,” it said.

INEC insisted that it would not issue access code to or accept the list and particulars of candidates emanating from such primaries.

It also advised the registered political parties to strictly adhere to the provisions of their constitutions on internal party administration and nomination of candidates for elections.

According to the electoral umpire, this has become necessary in view of the recent spate of complaints regarding the dissolution of the executives of state branches even where their tenures have not expired, as well as the rash of conflicting court orders with respect to party primaries and candidature long after elections have been conducted by the commission.

The electoral umpire stated that respect for party constitution and due process were cardinal to electoral democracy, adding that political parties must keep to their obligations to internal democracy and the rule of law.

“The commission uses this opportunity to appeal to all critical stakeholders to support its efforts to strengthen the electoral process.

“These efforts presently include but are not limited to the initiative to expand access of voters to polling units, resumption of the continuous voters registration, amendment of the Electoral Legal Framework, preparations for the conduct of the Anambra, Ekiti and Osun Governorship elections and some bye-elections, the deepening of the use of technology in the electoral process, as well as early preparations for the 2023 general elections,” the statement added.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that the commission had earlier fixed November 6 for the state’s governorship election.
