  • Newly elected Anambra LG chairman allegedly arrested by FBI

Newly elected Anambra LG chairman allegedly arrested by FBI

Reportedly, Chairman of Ogbaru local government area in Anambra State, Franklin Ikechukwu Nwadialo, elected in September 2024, has been arrested in the United States of America (USA).

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the United States Department of Justice made the disclosure, saying the 40-year-old Nigerian national was arrested upon his arrival at an airport in Texas on an indictment returned in the Western District of Washington.

It was gathered that Nwadialo was indicted in December 2023 for 14 counts of wire fraud connected to his romance fraud scheme. He was traveling from Nigeria when he was arrested.

According to a report on United States Department of Justice’s website, Nwadialo will be transported to the Western District of Washington for arraignment.

“All too often the defendants in these romance scams are overseas and unreachable by U.S. law enforcement,” said U.S. Attorney Tessa M. Gorman. “I congratulate investigators who are alert to any opportunity to arrest such defendants and hold them accountable.”

According to the indictment and criminal complaint filed in the case, Nwadialo allegedly defrauded victims of more than $3.3 million. According to the indictment, Nwadialo used various versions of the name ‘Giovanni” when he met his victims online on websites such as Match, Zoosk, and Christian Café.

Nwadialo used false images for his profile and typically told the victims that he was in the military and deployed overseas so he could not meet the victims in person. Using these personas, Nwadialo invented many reasons he needed the victims to send him money.

In one such case in 2020, he indicated he had been fined by the military for revealing his location to the victim. He asked the victim to help him pay the $150,000 fine. In all, that victim was defrauded of at least $2.4 million.

A second victim was contacted in 2019 to help move funds from U.S. accounts to accounts controlled by the defendant and his co-schemers. In this instance Nwadialo represented that he needed the help moving money in connection with his father’s death. The victim transferred at least $330,000 to the accounts controlled by the defendant.

A third victim was defrauded by Nwadialo when he told her that he was investing money for her. He claimed that a check she received from another victim was proceeds from her investments and he had her “reinvest” the money in a specific cryptocurrency account that he controlled. The victim transferred at least $270,000 at Nwadialo’s direction.

Finally, in August 2020, Nwadialo defrauded another victim who he met on an online dating site and caused this victim to transfer at least $310,000 by claiming he needed financial assistance, including help paying for his father’s funeral or his son’s school tuition.

The fourteen counts of wire fraud relate to the communications with Nwadialo and the wiring of funds from victims to the defendant and his co-schemers.

Wire fraud is punishable by up to twenty years in prison. The charges contained in the indictment are only allegations.  A person is presumed innocent unless and until he or she is proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

The case is being investigated by the FBI. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Sok Jiang.

Hunters rescue kidnap victim in Anambra

The Nigerian Hunters and Forest Security Service (NHFSS) says it has rescued a kidnap victim, one Chukwunonso Nzekwe, at Nimo Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra.

The Deputy Commander-General of NHFSS in charge of Intelligence, Dr John Metchie, made this known in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja.

Metchie said that the victim was rescued in a joint operation by the NHFSS and the Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra Brigade (Ochabrigade) conducted on Saturday.

He explained that the rescue followed a report of a kidnap incident during a prayer by the Catholic Church parishes in Nimo community, when the victim, who is a building engineer, was kidnapped.

He said that after the abduction, the victim was taken to Agu Urukwelora village in Egbengwu Ojideleke Nimo, adding that the eagle eyes of the NHFSS intelligence officer in the village saw them in the bush.

”He informed a retired Superintendent of Police who in a swift response with other officers apprehended one of the kidnappers who hails from Nasarawa State and resident in Enugwu Ukwu, Njikoka Local Government Area.

”Though his partners escaped after serious gun battles, the victim was rescued. A locally made gun was also recovered, and the suspect was quickly handed over to the police at the Rapid Response section at Awkuzu for discreet investigation,” he said.

Metchie commended the rescue team for their gallantry, assuring that the hunters would continue to ensure that Anambra forests were safe from criminal invasions.

He also solicited for more information from members of the public to enable them tackle security challenges, adding that the public should endeavour to say something when they see something.

He reiterated the commitment of the NHFSS to continue to collaborate with Ochabrigade in cleaning the state off criminal elements.

He also commended the Commander-General, Dr Joshua Osatimehin, for his transformational leadership as as well as the Anambra State Commander, Mr Destiny Jonas for his dedication to the service.

  • Minimum wage: Anambra workers tell Soludo to use FG’s template

Minimum wage: Anambra workers tell Soludo to use FG’s template

Anambra labour leaders, on Friday, appealed to Gov. Charles Soludo to use the Federal Government’s template to compute the workers’ new minimum wage.

The President, Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Anambra Chapter, made the appeal in Awka, while briefing newsmen on the workers’ expectations from the new minimum wage.

Aromeh said that the organised labour in the state, comprising the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and NULGE, “are collectively appealing to Soludo, in the interest of workers, to use the chart released by the Federal Government.

“Yes, there is an issue of new minimum wage on ground and the labour leaders, including NLC, TUC and NULGE, have been meeting with the governor on the matter.

“In Anambra, unfortunately, the  governor is not getting it right, because from what we have seen from him and his team, we are not happy, especially in the areas that affect salaries Grade Levels eight to 17, government’s proposal is nothing to write home about,” he said.

Aromeh further said that though the government is basing its argument on its internally generated revenue, but available reports show that Anambra is far better than a number of states that have adopted the Federal Government’s template for the new minimum wage.

“The Federal Government’s chart must be used and not for the state to adopt a discriminatory package for workers on different grade levels.

“If what the state is bringing to the table is allowed, it means that as you progress, your take home pay will continue to go down,” he said.

The NULGE boss wondered why a worker on Grade Level one, step one, would earn N70,000 plus, while a staff on Grade Level eight would also earn N70,000 plus every month.

“It is wrong. The real thing should be done. NULGE is not happy about it and seriously pleading with the Anambra Government and Mr Governor as the father to use the chart used by the Federal Government.

“Gov. Soludo is friendly with Anambra workers and NULGE in particular, but on this new minimum wage, he is not protecting the collective interest of the workers.

“Our collective stand is that the normal chart be used, and everything worked out based on percentage.

“We are optimistic that he will do something, urgently, because he knows the economic hardship facing the workers,’’ he said.

Aromeh said that all the workers in the country operate in the same market and economy, hence no state should apply a template different from the one released by the Federal Government.

“If our governor does not adopt the Federal Government’s template, we have other options than giving him ultimatum or going to court because we do not want to bring problem in the state,” he said.

He expressed optimism that the government would reason with the workers to use the Federal Government’s template, due to the current economic hardship in the country.
