2023: Nigeria needs a stingy leader – Peter Obi

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi, has hinted that the country needs a stingy leader at the moment, saying the presidency of Nigeria is not a retirement loan.

Obi added that apart from being accused of being stingy he’s the youngest, the fittest, and the most qualified candidate amongst the four major contestants in the forthcoming presidential elections.

The Anambra-born politician made these comments at the All Saints Cathedral Field, Onitsha, Anambra State, before a crowd of supporters and party faithful as part of his nationwide campaign.

Before coming to Onitsha, the Labour Party candidate had earlier met with Anambra Traditional Rulers and other stakeholders at the Government House, Awka.

He said, “The presidency is not about turn, but about capacity because if it is about turn, people like us would insist that it is our turn and should be considered.

“The job of a President is not a retirement home or for any kind of settlement but about uniting and rebuilding the country.

“They said that I am a stingy man and I say they didn’t say that I am extravagant or that I embezzled public funds only that I am stingy and I tell you the job and the Presidency of our country needs a stingy person.”

He said would negotiate with agitators to make peace in the country which has been taken over by restiveness, but if those causing insecurity and restiveness refuse, “we will tell them that we have a government in Nigeria.”

He said, “All we are coming to do is to end suffering and build a new Nigeria. In Nigeria today, nobody is safe, and families are begging to eat. We will secure and unite Nigeria.

“What I did in Anambra, I will do in Nigeria. We will negotiate, but whoever refuses, we will tell him there is a government.

“Anambra is a trading and manufacturing city, we will support all businesses. We will do same in Lagos, Kano, Kaduna and Borno. Every part of Nigeria will be productive.

“We will open roads. Any tarred road you see in Onitsha was tarred by me. I built the best road network in Nigeria. Those who left Nigeria will come back; we will face exportation to stabilise and reverse the dwindling fortunes of the naira if we assume power.

“There is no combination between us and others, if you have not created wealth, you cannot manage it. Datti and I are businessmen. The only way Nigeria can change is to hand it over to wealth creators.

Obi’s running mate, Yusuf Datti said he decided to work with Obi because he believes in justice, equality and fairness.

2023: NYSC sends strong warning to corps members

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has warned corps members willing to participate in the 2023 general elections to be neutral and apolitical.

Mrs Christy Uba, the Acting Director General of NYSC, said this while addressing corps members at the Mbaukwu/Umuawulu Permanent Orientation camp, Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra on Saturday.

Uba witnessed the cultural carnival of the scheme organised for members of 2023 Batch C in Anambra.

The Ag DG said election duty was voluntary for corps members and those who wished to take part must eschew all forms of malpractice that could undermine the integrity of the poll or reputation of the scheme.

She said the NYSC would not hesitate to surrender any corps member with a proven case of electoral malfeasance to the state to face the laws of the land.

“If you are to participate in the 2023 election, please not that it is an ad hoc assignment, you must be neutral and apolitical.

“Do not participate in a wrong manner, you are not a politician as corps members, you may be in future but for now, you are corps members.

“If you run foul of any electoral law, you are going to prison, NYSC can not cover you up, once they come for you stating that you ran foul of the law, we will surrender you to the state.

“Participation in election is voluntary, it is optional, you gave a choice to make but if you have decided to participate, make sure you take part in all the trainings and sensitisation so that you can understand your role and boundaries,” she said.

Uba commended the corps members for their good behaviour in camp while charging them to go to their places of primary assignment and contribute to national development through service to communities.

She thanked the Anambra Government for building a good orientation camp for the scheme and urged other states in the country which were yet to build a permanent camp to do so.

The Ag DG advised the corps members to imbibe all the training they were getting in camp and invest in post camp entrepreneurial skill acquisition, to help them master their various trades and be job creators.

Mrs Ekene Iruma, the Coordinator of NYSC, said the cultural carnival was part of the programmes of the scheme aimed at encouraging cultural interaction among youths.

Iruma said the corps in camp, including those posted to Delta State, adapted the cultures well as seen in their performance, adding that such understanding would help them live harmoniously with their host communities.

Mr Patrick Aghamba, Commissioner for Youth, congratulated the corps members for their posting to Anambra while assuring them that the state was safe.

Soludo gives a boost to education, employs 5000 fresh teachers in Anambra (Photos)

Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, has employed 5000 fresh teachers to boost education in Anambra State.

The entire recruitment process was done through a transparent and competitive process supervised by the State Ministry of Education.

Governor Soludo presented the appointment letters to the recently recruited 5000 teachers in a televised grand noonday ceremony on Friday, December 2, at the International Convention Centre, Awka.

The gathered teachers and their guests were full of praise for Governor Soludo for having faith in them as a continuation of his open demonstration of transparency and credibility in all sectors in Anambra State.

It was an occasion to savour as Governor Soludo shared ennobling company with the teachers because the governor sees himself, first and foremost, as a teacher having lectured for many years at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and in some other universities all over the world.

Many educationists lauded Governor Soludo for his landmark innovative method of recruiting teachers credibly, transparently and competitively.
Anambra State Commissioner for Education, Professor (Mrs.) Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, who superintended all stages of the recruitment exercise basked in the glory of the moment, attesting to the fact that the process was quite challenging.

She was steadfast in carrying out Governor Soludo’s mandate of making the exercise comprehensively transparent and credible.
It needs to be recalled that following the dearth of teachers in schools as inherited by the administration on assumption of office, Governor Soludo took the immediate decision of the approval for the recruitment of 5,000 teachers.
The competitive process of the recruitment has been described by multiform observers as being the most credible and transparent in recent times.

According to the records, out of the 40,120 candidates who responded to the initial advertisement, 13,500 scaled through the first Computer Based Test (CBT) which had 60 percent as the cut-off mark.

The supplementary test took the cut-off mark down to 55 percent, thereby adding additional 2000 candidates to the number scheduled for the last CBT.
The last CBT was scheduled in six centres at a cut-off mark of 55 percent. The 8,120 successful candidates were scheduled for oral and written interviews.
The successful candidates were determined by adding the last CBT scores and the oral/written interview scores, and dividing by simple average. The cut-off mark was set at 60 percent.

After the painstaking and rigorous exercise, the 5,000 teachers were selected strictly on merit. Anambra children deserve the best/ I will not give to them what I will not give to my own children.

The presentation of the appointment letters to the recruited 5000 teachers on Friday, December 2, at the International Convention Centre, Awka, was the climax of a job well done by Governor Soludo who amidst laud ovation assured them that they will receive their December salaries.
