Mrs Sally Mbanefo, Commissioner for Indigenous Art Works, Diaspora Affairs, Culture and Tourism in Anambra, says her mission is to make tourism sector a major contributor to the state’s economy.

Mbanefo said this when she visited Blessed Iwene Tansi tomb and Obu Gad, the historical origin of the Igbo people in Aguleri, Anambra East Local Government Area, on Sunday.

She said promised to use her experience in the tourism industry to activate and turn around the tourism potential of Anambra and create a good number of jobs in the sector for the youth.

The former Director-General of the Nigeria Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC), said tourism sector had the potential to drive the economy of any nation.

According to her, the tour of the various tourism sites in the state is to enable her to have first hand appreciation of what Anambra is endowed with in the sector.

Mbanefo said the Tansi tomb would be upgraded to a religious tourism site and Obu Gad site believed to be where Eri, the ancestor of Igbo, settled.

The commissioner said the tomb, which had already been acclaimed an international tourism site, would be made a world class tourists’ destination.

“The importance of the visit is to pay tribute to the land and to recognise and appreciate Aguleri for its rich cultural heritage sites.

“We are going to make sure that the tomb of Blessed Iwene Tansi is turned into a religious tourism site.

“Tourism is the greatest employer of labour and it contributes a lot to gross demotic product of other countries of the world.

“So, my vision here is to use my wealth of experience to make Anambra Centre of Tourism in Nigeria,” she said.

Igwe Chukwuemeka Eri, the Traditional Ruler of Enugu-Aguleri, who received the commissioner to the ancient town, congratulated her on her appointment.

Tourism creates job opportunities for young Nigerians’-Ben Akabueze

  • CSOs urge eligible voters in Anambra to register with INEC

Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) have called on eligible voters in Anambra to register with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) before the end of the current phase of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR).

The groups made the call in Awka during a one-day sensitisation workshop on Electoral Participation for youths on Sunday.

Mrs Chioma Okeke, Coordinator, Shoulder for Gender Support and Development Initiative, decried the level of political apathy in Anambra and the South-East.

Okeke called on the participants, mostly youths, to avail themselves with the window provided by the ongoing CVR and register.

She said some of the identified challenges in registration of voters in Anambra include: absence of INEC registration officials at advertised venues, alleged extortion of those wishing to register by officials and non collection of Permanent Voter Cards(PVCs)

“INEC has to do more to cover eligible voters in the ongoing registration process, while in some places, efforts are made to register people even up to going to their houses, here people go to designated places and the officials are not there,” she said.

On his part, Mr Chukwuma Chukwura, Coordinator of Kingsfaith Development and Youth Empowerment Initiative, expressed concern that people could not take time off their daily routine to register or collect their PVCs at INEC office.

He said the number of eligible voters said to have registered in Anambra was a far cry from the population of voters in the state.

“It is a serious source of worry for us how our youths behave when it comes to politics.

“They are very active on social media , posting all sort of things about Nigeria and some individuals but in practice, they are not doing anything; common registering to vote, they will not, for those that manage to register, go and get your PVC, no way.

“Worse still, on the day of election you see them playing football and drinking at joints because they feel it is not their business, that is why very small per cent of them voted in the last governorship election in Anambra.

“What we are saying is that INEC, the political class and communities should encourage those who have not registered to do so before the time is up,” he said.

Addressing the participants, Mr Leo Nkedife, Head, Public Relations Department of INEC in Anambra , corroborated the CSOs’ observation that the turnout of people in the state for the CVR was poor.

Nkedife urged the people to take advantage of the exercise to register, saying that registration was free.

He urged the people to report any of the commission’s official(s) who demanded money before registering them.

Nkedife disclosed that only 22 per cent of the 2.15 million voters in Anambra participated in the Nov. 18, 2107 governorship election, and that over 142,000 PVCs were still awaiting collection at the INEC office in the state.

He said INEC had greatly improved in the conduct of elections as people’s votes now count.

Prof Collins Okafor of the Department of Political Science, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, blamed the political apathy among the people on lack of confidence in the Nigerian electoral process.

Okafor said apathy include; refusal to register, refusal to belong to a political party, refusal to vote and refusal to protest against rigging and other electoral malpractice.

He said those who did not participate in politics contributed more to the political and economic crisis in the country.

  • Magu charges public officers not to betray public trust

The Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu has admonished public officers not to betray the trust reposed in them by the people.

He gave the advice on Saturday at Awka, Anambra State while delivering a lecture entitled, ‘A New Dawn: Expectations from the Public Sector’, at a two-day retreat for senior state officers, newly sworn-in commissioners and heads of parastatals on the importance of avoiding unforseen and embarrassing problems while carrying out their official duties, especially as they relate to corruption, economic and financial crimes.

Magu observed that government business is about people and processes that drive it. He encouraged the officials to align with the guiding principles of SERVICOM and promote transparency and effective service delivery in their various areas of responsibilities.

According to him, “the service component of your engagement with the Nigerian people is enshrined in the SERVICOM charter, which tasks all officials and agencies of government with ensuring quick, efficient and effective service to the citizenry in line with the principles of accountability, transparency and honesty”.

Magu maintained that “the betrayal of public trust is the worst crime a public officer can commit against the people”.

Magu observed that a precondition to service is purging oneself of all vices that may negatively influence one’s conduct, pointing out that eliminating all sources of conflict of interest was a good beginning for a successful public life.

In his remarks, the Governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano expressed his gratitude to the EFCC boss for his personal presence at the event, adducing that receiving the message directly from the corruption fighter would make a lasting impression and impact positively on the jobs of the officers.

While assuring the Acting Chairman of his team’s confidence in the anti corruption campaign, Obiano reiterated that as leaders, he and his team were vicariously liable for crimes committed by their subordinates.

The two-day retreat was an intense exercise by the newly inaugurated Obiano administration to position the cabinet for better performance.

  • Anambra begins development of culture, tourism centres – Commissioner

The Commissioner for Diaspora Affairs, Culture and Tourism in Anambra, Mrs Stella Onuora, said that the state government has begun exploration of tourists’ sites in the state to boost revenue.

Onuora made the disclosure in Awka on Monday in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

The commissioner said that as part of her ministry’s efforts to ensure that tourism and culture was well placed in the state, leisure tourism would be explored while tourists’ sites were developed.

She identified some of the sites to include Ogbunike Cave in Oyi Local Government, Owerri-Ezukala Water Falls in Orumba South council and Agulu Lake in Anaocha Local council.

Onuorah said that Gov. Willie Obiano’s administration had improved the tourism potential of the state through its effective security network, infrastructural development and opening up of tourists’ sites.

She disclosed that tourism sector would be receiving more resources to ensure that all the sites in the state were made to standard to attract indigenous and foreign investors.

The commissioner called on unemployed youths to key into the tourism potential of the state by identifying with their culture and demonstrating willingness to work in the sector.

Onuora said that the state government would harness and showcase the rich cultural heritage and sites in the state both for economic and social reasons.

According to her, culture and tourism are both economic and social trend that holds major prospects in nation building.

“When these prospects are properly identified and harnessed, the Gross Domestic Product of the nation will be tremendously alarming because the nation will see what they have been missing for long due to lack of nature appreciation.

“If we develop tourism culture like Jerusalem, Brazil, France, and London, revenue alone from tourism will shock us and be able to solve a lot of infrastructural problems.

“Tourism and culture hype is a silent money spinning venture because it gives people relaxation needed after a long work period and rejuvenates one back to life,’’ she said.

She said that with development of the sector, the government would be giving dividend of democracy to its citizens without much cost in achieving such success.

She described culture and tourism as `catalysts for national development and big foreign earners’ for state.

The commissioner urged the citizens both at home and in Diaspora to log into Anambra State Tourism Portal initiative so as to keep abreast on issues in the sector.
