The governor extolled the late matriarch for standing by her husband as the first democratically elected Governor of the state which was created in 1991 until her death.

According to Soludo, Mrs Ezeife’s courageous disposition and supportive role as wife and mother during her husband’s administration will always be remembered.

He comforted Ezeife for the painful loss and prayed that God will grant the soul of his wife eternal rest as well as give the bereaved the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

Late Mrs Ezeife died on December 13, 2021, at the age of 81 and has been buried.

Anambra gov, Soludo swears in 20 commissioners

Anambra State Governor, Charles Chukwuma Soludo on Saturday swore in 20 commissioners with a charge for them to get ready for service.

The new commissioners sworn into office were cleared earlier by the State House of Assembly.

Soludo, who performed the function at the state Executive Council Chamber, Government House Awka, charged them to deliver optimal services to the people of Anambra.

He said that his administration would declare a state of emergency in all the sectors starting with security.

“All sectors will be given due attention beginning with security which we have already started doing something,” he said.

Soludo said that the assignment of a portfolio to each of the new commissioners before the swearing-in was a clear departure to known tradition.

He said that the commissioners were selected based on their areas of specialisation.

“More than 22, 000 persons applied to serve, out of which more than 1, 000 indicated interest to serve as commissioners.

“It is from this list that we picked the 20 commissioners and another commissioner nominee yet to be cleared by the lawmakers because I submitted his name after the initial list was sent,” Soludo said.

He said each of the commissioners would be given his election manifesto, Anambra vision 2070, document and the report submitted by a transition committee before his handover.

“Each of you must study the three documents because the documents constitute the template best tagged social contract with more than 15 million residents of Anambra and our people in the Diaspora,” he said.

He appealed to the people of the state, especially the families and close relatives of the commissioners, to ensure that they did not place much demands on them as their services were more to the state.

Responding on behalf of her colleagues, Mrs Sylvia Ifemeje, the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General, thanked God and Soludo for their appointments, adding that they would not disappoint the state.

Soludo reveals those behind burning of Aguata secretariat

Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo has revealed that the arsonists who destroyed the headquarters of Aguata Local Government Area are not from the state.

Recall that the local government secretariat was on Thursday razed by gunmen.

Governor Soludo reveals that the attack was carried out by fleeing criminals who were chased from their operational camp and hideout by Nigerian security forces.

According to him, military operations at the borders of Aguluezechukwu and Ogborji communities in the Local Government had led to the dislodging of the criminal elements who he said had been operating in the areas for over two years.

The governor, who revealed that the arsonists are from other states in the Southeast, lamented why some Igbos chose to harm themselves.

He said ”They were smoked out, the camp destroyed and as they were fleeing cowardly, they decided to set the Local Government Secretariat ablaze but thank God the police came on time and smoked them out.

“From the statistics so far, 85 per cent of people arrested come from one of the states in the South East and the remaining 15 per cent from another state in the Southeast.

”It is really our people doing this to themselves.”

Anambra PDP faction suspends Acting Chairman

A faction of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra has suspended Mr Okey Asolo, acting Chairman of the party in the state.

Asolo’ was suspended by the PDP ward leadership in Ward 13 Onitsha North Local Government Area which accused him of violation of party constitution and anti-party activities.

Asolo, who took over from Chief Ndubuisi Nwobu as acting Chairman, had on April 2 suspended Chief Chris Uba, a member of PDP Board of Trustees and Chief Linus Ukachukwu, a chieftain of the party.

The notice of sack is contained in a statement made available to newsmen in Awka on Tuesday and signed by Mr Obinna Obialor and Mr Obinna Obichinyere, Chairman and Secretary of the party in the ward respectively.

According to the statement, arising from a crucial meeting of the Ward Executive Committee held on April, 3, the PDP Ward 13 Onitsha North LGA suspended Comrade Okey Asolo.

“His suspension from the Ward is on account of his violation of the PDP constitution and anti-party activities.

“Sir, the suspension of Comrade Okey Asolo is anchored on the provisions of Article 58 (1) and 59 (1) and (2) of the PDP Constitution 2017 as amended,” it stated.

The suspension was upheld by the Onitsha North Local Government chapter of the party which met on Monday.

The chapter, in a Communiqué signed by Mr Alex Anah and Mr Chigbo Onyia, chairman and secretary respectively said it deeply considered the notice and came to the conclusion that Comrade Okey Asolo actually violated the provisions of the PDP Constitution 2017 as amended.

“We upheld the said suspension and equally suspended him from the Onitsha North Local Government Area PDP of Anambra State,” it said.

Meanwhile, a group, Forum of Elected Local Government Chairmen in Anambra has dissociated itself from the suspension of Uba and Ukachukwu.

The chairman, who wrote to the national leadership of the party in a communiqué, said Asolo and his group activities were aimed at destabilising the party.

“We dissociate ourselves from this fragment of imagination of Okey Asolo and cohorts purporting to have suspended Chief Chris Uba and Chief Linus Ukachukwu from the PDP.

“By their action, there is no gain saying the fact that their sole aim is to destabilise the People’s Democratic Party.

“Therefore, we urge you members of the National Executive Committee of our party to disregard the purported suspension of the two high profile leaders of our great party,” it stated.

Soludo offers amnesty to IPOB members, says drop your arms

Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, on Monday offered amnesty to members of IPOB pleading that they should their arms and embrace a meaningful life in society.

The professor of Economics pleaded with them to come out of the different forests in the State and lay down their arms to forge meaningful lives.

Soludo said following the unanimous agreement of the leaders across board and the endorsement of the entire body of Christ, he had decided to end Monday sit-at-home.

He said: “I am pleased to inform our people that today, Monday, April 4, 2022 marks the official end to the “Monday sit-at-home” in Anambra State.

“Shortly, I will be announcing the membership of the Peace and Reconciliation Committee that will look into addressing all areas of sincere challenge, including interfacing with the Federal Government on behalf of all Prisoners of conscience.

“I have also offered Amnesty to all our brothers in the various forests around us. Give us your guns, and trust us to help you forge a meaningful living.”

The Governor stated these on his official Facebook page on Monday.

“We have prayed to God, admonished our people and made commitment to ensuring that everyone concerned gets expeditious justice.

“The task of taking back our dear State and reclaiming the dignity of our collective existence is at the heart of our drive towards a Liveable and Prosperous Homeland.

“This task is a MUST. I call for your support and prayers, as we have resolved to fiercely go after criminal elements who are out to threaten our peace and distort our development,” Soludo said.

Meanwhile, Christians across the Southeast offered prayers to God at 11 am today for peace to return to Igboland in particular and Nigeria in general.

In a statement issued by the representatives of Igbo Archbishops and Bishops on peace and Conflict Resolution, the clergy listed eight prayer points that today’s spiritual exercise was meant to accomplish.

They said the Prayer should focus on the following prayer points:

“That God deliver Nigeria from the violence and evil machinations of those who are hell-bent on destroying the country, especially, as we approach the 2023 elections.

“That God bring about a total deliverance from all manifestations of insecurity in Igboland and restore peace and socio-economic dynamism and vitality in the Igbo homesteads of Nigeria.

“That our son, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, and all political agitators in Nigeria, be shown consideration, receive justice and be allowed to defend themselves, in cases of criminal accusations, properly, without drama, prejudice and preconceptions, legally like any other citizens of Nigeria.

“That God cause change of heart in murderers, hoodlums and hooligans and make them recognise the sacredness of human life.

“That God protect our security agents, and give them the courage and determination to apprehend unrepentant agents of violence, death and destruction and bring them to justice, wherever they may be.

“That God restore in our youth, belief in His Commandments, a sense of love and the spirit of charity, so that they can use their energy, knowledge, talents, time and opportunity to build a future for all to His glory alone.

“That by the grace of God, justice, equity, fainess and progress will reign in Nigeria.

“That God give the Federal Government of Nigeria and of our own political leaders, the wisdom, courage and the honesty to constructively and transparently address the challenges facing the Igbo homesteads of Nigeria which are at the root of youth restiveness and violence in our States.”

The day of prayer in Alaigbo was themed: “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn away from their wicked ways, I will forgive their sins and will heal their land (2 Chronicles 7:14).”

In a statement on Sunday, the Bishops said, “We are horrified by the wide-spread insecurity, the continuing and widening destruction of lives and property, and the socio-economic disruption this has caused in our country and, particularly in ala Igbo, in recent times.

“We may be tempted to think that there is nothing we can do to make a difference. But as Christians, we believe that prayers made with sincere faith can move mountains and calm every storm. Our enemy, the devil, would rather have us do any other thing but pray in this critical season of our lives as a people.

“Today, almost all the Igbo homesteads in Nigeria seem to be falling under the control of perpetrators of violence and death. We witness daily the relentless attacks and mindless killings of innocent people either by unknown gunmen, kidnappers, security agents or some unscrupulous and criminal elements. We, your servants in the brotherhood of Christ, share in the deep sorrow and pain of our brethren.”

“Accepting that ‘unless the Lord watches over the city, in vain do watchmen keep vigil’ (Ps 1 27:1 ) we, Igbo Archbishops and Bishops, invite all Christian faithful in ala Igbo and other men and women of goodwill across Nigeria and the world to unleash the force of prayer and call down divine favours from God for a radical change in our society. Nothing compares with the power of God.

“We therefore call on all Igbo sons and daughters, irrespective of their religious affiliations, and all men and women of goodwill to en-masse, cry out to God, our Loving Father, who has the power to put an end to this pain and misery. This prayer campaign will be led by the Archbishops, Bishops and the clergy of all Christian denominations in ala Igbo on Monday, 4. April, 2022.

“It will take place within the premises of the Cathedrals, Churches and prayer houses across ala Igbo by 11:00am and we enjoin the faithful wherever you maybe across Nigeria, or abroad to pause and join in fellowship as we seek the face of our Father.

“Like Nehemiah of old, we your servants invite all, our dear Igbo sons and daughters, to come together especially in this Lenten season, a period of prayer and sober reflection, to rebuild our society through prayer, repentance, hard work and determination.

“We can and must rebuild our lives together in faith because ‘with God all things are possible’ (Mt.19:26). This is a clarion call for Ndigbo to arise and shine for our light has come (Isaiah 60:1). May the blessings of God the Almighty Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit be on you all, on our nation and more especially on Igboland. Amen.”

The statement was signed by Most Rev Dr. Anthony J. V. Obinna, Catholic Archbishop Emeritus of Owerri; Most Rev. Dr. Emmanuel O. Chukwuma, Bishop of Enugu; Most Rev. Dr. Chibuzor R. Opoko, Methodist Archbishop of Umuahia; Most Rev. Dr. Valerian M. Okeke, Catholic Archbishop of Onitsha; Most Rev Dr. Uma A. Onwunta, Past Principal Clerk, Presbyterian Church Nigeria; Bishop Obi Onubogu, Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria; and Rev. Dr. Abraham Nwali, Chairman CAN Southeast Zone.

Anambra PDP suspends Chris Uba, Linus Ukachukwu

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Anambra state chapter has suspended Chris Uba and Linus Ukachukwu for anti-party activities, abuse of privileges and causing “unimaginable damages to the electoral fortunes and stability” of the party.

The party held an emergency meeting of the State Executive Council on Saturday and concluded the suspension of the two political heavyweights in the state.

In a statement released by National Chairman of PDP, Dr Iyorcha Ayu, and signed by the Acting Chairman of the party in Anambra state Okey Asolo and the Publicity Secretary, Nnamdi Nwangwu, explains that the decision was taken in accordance to the laid down rules of the party and also to secure its future and reputation.

“On further evaluation of the Party’s electoral misfortunes in recent part vis-a-vis the anti-party activities, abuse of privileges of the above party members, who had previously caused unimaginable damages to the electoral fortunes and stability of our great Party.

“Having satisfied that these characters are hell-bent on destroying the Party further, by conspiring to turn the Party into the agent of the ruling government through a very wicked and crooked manner.

  • Turning the Other Cheek for Will Smith – By Azu Ishiekwene

Turning the Other Cheek for Will Smith – By Azu Ishiekwene

One week before Hollywood, Nigeria hosted a different kind of Oscar moment. At the swearing-in ceremony of Charles Soludo, former Governor of the Central Bank and new governor of the most commercially significant southeast states, the wife of the outgoing governor, Ebele Obiano, staged an unusual drama.

Ebele, Nigeria’s modest answer to Kenya’s tempestuous Lucy Kibaki, floated across the dais to where Bianca Ojukwu Nigeria’s former ambassador to Spain was sitting to mockingly question what she was doing at the ceremony after years of being a thorn in the government’s side. What followed wasn’t as pretty as Ebele’s butterfly-sleeved pink dress.

Right there before hundreds of guests and hundreds more watching on TV and following on social media, Bianca, a former beauty Queen and ambassador, landed the outgoing governor’s wife a slap and ripped her wig. Nollywood may have called it, Fury of The Fish Wives. But this wasn’t a movie; it was real.

The solemn handover ceremony instantly became a footnote. It was supplanted by an excited public that obviously judged Bianca’s assault excusable recompense for a provincial First Lady whose contempt for the state apart from purchasing a pair of Gucci glasses worth $2,755, also included shopping for personal designer Covid-19 vaccines when the state could not afford a single jab for its citizens.

Bianca’s slap rocked social media. Even though she responded by claiming she had acted in self-defence, questions are still being asked about what kind of example she had set, whether she did not go too far and whether, in fact, the public had not been unfair in judging Ebele‘s record.

We had barely recovered from the Ebele-Bianca face off when Will Smith happened thousands of miles away, momentarily giving the impression that Hollywood had taken a leaf from Nollywood, except that even Woody Allen might have been hard pressed to script this. What was Will Smith thinking when he leapt to the stage and decked Chris Rock in reaction to the latter’s joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair loss?

Some might say this question puts the cart before the horse. That the joke should not be on Will Smith but on Rock, who chose the Smiths’ day of joy to crack a poor, tasteless joke with no regard whatsoever for the misery that Jada’s hair loss (a medical condition), must be causing the family.

Unfortunately, comedians, like most creative people, get paid to trade not only in others’ foibles, quirks or pet peeves, but in their misery as well. In his final days, Saddam Hussein served an Iraqi cabaret a death sentence for making him the butt of their jokes. For years, South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma was the subject of scathing jokes, and was in fact crowned with a “shower head”, a cartoon caricature from the president’s testimony during his rape trial.

Five years ago, American comedian, Katty Griffin, thought it was funny when she posed for a photo with the replica of Donald Trump’s tomato-splattered head. But the backlash was more than she bargained for. In spite of her apology that it was in the nature of her business to constantly “move the line” and then “cross it” and that she didn’t mean any harm, she lost her tour dates and endorsements apart from being fired by CNN.

And a tasteless joke by popular Nigerian comedian, Basketmouth, in 2014 comparing dating experiences between “white girls” and “African girls”, with a primer on which variety required “a bit of rape” to straighten out, was filed away until 2019 when he was chosen as an influencer for an EU-sponsored campaign against gender-based violence. The joke came back to haunt him. In spite of his apology, it cost him his EU endorsement as well.

I don’t think there’s too much disagreement about whether Rock’s joke on Jada crossed the line. Alopecia, a general term used for any form of hair loss, is not a laughing matter. While the disease is not medically serious, sufferers endure different levels of psychological discomfort, which like talking about periodontal disease or tooth loss in the presence of the elderly, can only compound their misery.

Some have said that a balding man would have taken the joke on his chin and that, in fact, Will Smith laughed momentarily before he caught the joke. But Jada is not a balding man and didn’t need to be. She is an actress who has struggled with a medical condition. She has not been shy to acknowledge her condition and it was maliciously cynical of Rock to exploit it for a laugh.

The relationship between the Smiths and Rock is also fraught. After Rock’s 2016 swipe at the Smiths that “Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties,” and his comment that the Smiths “went mad” that there were no Black nominees that year, you would expect Rock to make his mickey elsewhere. But not only did it have to be the Smiths again, it had to be Jada’s hair this time.

Unfortunately, however mildly the Academy may have responded to this embarrassing moment of one Black man striking another on stage, it just feeds the prejudice of a few who would use the incident to justify sleepwalking on demands for a more diverse, inclusive Oscars.

There have, in fact, been insinuations that the Academy’s reluctance to press charges, which is possible under California laws, is not necessarily for Smith’s sake but more for its own enlightened self-interest. How does going from #OscarsSowhite to #OscarsBlackfights help the Academy, for example? And would Will Smith have responded the same way if Rock was a Caucasian comedian? Or did the joke only suddenly become insensitive and bad because he was at the receiving end?

Medieval literature is replete with fighting for love or chivalry, which not only ended in personal tragedies but sometimes in ghastly blood feuds like the Spanish succession wars. But the world has come a long way since. Jada didn’t need Will Smith to take us back to Lancelot or Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

Rock’s joke was disagreeable and deeply offensive. But in taking the law into his own hands and responding in a violent way, Will Smith modelled the worst excesses of modern pop culture – broken, out-of-control and narcissistic. It’s part of the reason why we do our best to keep our children as far away from that space as we can. To watch, on live TV, one celebrity decking the other suggests that it’s OK to smash the next fellow if you don’t like his or her joke.

Will Smith didn’t help Jada either. His action, like the unintended consequence of all chivalry, is to portray women as weak, defenceless and incomplete without male approval and protection, even when it is as foolish and needless as it was in this instance. In restraining himself after he was slapped, Rock looked the more admirable of the pair in the disgusting spectacle, somehow redeeming himself even in his moment of insane ribaldry.

Will Smith would have better served himself, Jada and millions around the world watching, by taking the stage not twice, but once, to express his displeasure and demand an apology for Rock’s rotten joke. And even if Will Smith didn’t step up, Jada’s extraordinary career and sterling social work are legacies that cannot be diminished by the unguarded moment of a chatterbox.

We see from the crime scenes – whether at the slapping drama at the Nigerian handover ceremony or at the Oscars in California – that politicians and celebrities are human and like most humans would in a moment of insanity say or do the wrong things in total disregard of their social status or the values we hold dear.

Will Smith’s assault on Chris Rock won’t be the last unscripted highlight of the Oscar and other Hollywood big nights. Even if the world turns the other cheek, celebrities would deck it because they assume that their status entitles them to do so.

Troops overrun IPOB/ESN hideout in Anambra-Nigerian Army

The Nigerian Army troops of 82 Division have dislodged the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed affiliate, Eastern Security Network (ESN) from their hideout in Anambra.

The Director, Army Public Relations, Brig.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, in a statement, said the clearance operation took place on Monday at Orsumoghu, Ihiala Local Government Area of the state.

Nwachukwu said the notorious groups had serially launched attacks on defenceless civilians and security targets from the hideout.

He said troops were met with stiff resistance from the dissident elements, as they closed in on their enclave during the operations along Imo-Anambra border communities.

According to him, the criminals were overwhelmed by the troops’ superior firepower, forcing them to abandon their hideout.

“After over running their camp, the gallant troops carried out further exploitation and recovered a cache of arms, comprising 22 Pump Action rifles, 19 Dane guns and 6 machetes.

“Other items recovered include assorted mobile phones, sim cards, monitor and a laptop.

”One operational Hilux vehicle and various voodoo items and charms were also recovered,”he added.

Nwachukwu said that investigations had revealed that the hideout served as the operational base of one Innocent Obieke (aka Double Lion).

He said Obieke was said to be the head of the vigilante group in the area, but surreptitiously coordinated the criminal activities of IPOB/ESN in the area.

According to him, the suspect is currently on the run, while troops have intensified operations to close in on him and his cohorts.

“Members of the general public are please enjoined to continue to support troops and other security agencies with credible and timely information that will lead to the arrest of criminal elements in their vicinity,” he said.

  • REVEALED: Why ex-Gov Obiano tried to leave Nigeria hours after handing over

REVEALED: Why ex-Gov Obiano tried to leave Nigeria hours after handing over

The former governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano, has revealed his main reason why he tried to leave Nigeria hours after he handed over to his successor, Chukwuma Soludo, on March 17.

Recall that Obiano was arrested at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos state by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

In an interview with Premium Times, Obiano, through his lawyer, Patrick Ikwueto, SAN, said he was not running away but was rather hurrying to keep a doctor’s appointment to treat a “semi fatal condition”.

“He was not running away. Why will he run away when his family is here and he has a lot to do here? The fact is that he (Obiano) has a medical condition for which he had a prior appointment to see his Specialist Doctor for treatment at Spring Creek Urology Specialists LLC, Houston, Texas, U.S.A.

By the nature of his ailment, he has been undergoing treatment at the said Specialist Hospital since June 2021 and had an appointment earlier scheduled for the final stage of Specialist Radiography for eight (8) weeks – which will take place immediately upon his arrival at the Facility in Houston, Texas, U.S.A; and thereafter, after four days. Subsequent treatments are scheduled every day for a period of eight (8) weeks.”

Mr Ikwueto said the Obiano had since mid last year received treatment at the U.S. medical facility every three months.

“The last time he was there was December 2021 and became due for another round of treatment this March shortly before he handed over to Soludo,” the lawyer said.

The lawyer refused to disclose the nature of the ailment.

“He (Obiano) was lucky that the disease was detected on time. It was still at an early stage when he was diagnosed last year,” said a source familiar with the former governor’s medical condition. He asked not to be named because he had no permission to discuss “private and confidential matters” concerning Mr Obiano.

“I can tell you that after the media reported that the EFCC placed him on its watchlist, he reached out to authorities at the federal level to seek permission to travel for his scheduled medical treatment,” the lawyer said. “He also promised that he would thereafter return to face any probe the EFCC or any other agency had against him. So it was shocking that he was still treated the way he was despite the assurance he was given.”he said
