INEC adjusts timing as Anambra supplementary poll holds today

The Anambra State supplementary election will hold from 10 am to 4 pm on Tuesday (today), the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said.

INEC National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, announced this via a statement issued on Monday.

He said the Commission made a slight adjustment to the commencement and closing time for the said election in line with extant rules and regulations.

According to Okoye, the move followed the suspension of collation of results in respect of governorship election as announced yesterday by the State Collation/Returning Officer and the decision of the Commission to hold an election in Ihiala Local Government Area on Tuesday.

“This decision, which will be strictly complied with, has been taken following a careful review of the prevailing situation in Anambra state and is being widely shared with the stakeholders including security agencies,” the statement read.

“We urge political parties, voters, election duty officials, election observers, the media and the general public to note this slight modification. We also appeal to citizens to conduct themselves in an orderly manner to ensure that the election is brought to a peaceful conclusion.”

Anambra election: I signed Orumba North LGA result under gunpoint, says INEC official

The returning officer of Orumba North LGA, Dr. Michael Otu, stunned stakeholders at the Anambra State governorship election collation centre on Sunday when he denounced the result he signed.

He said he did not believe in the result.

He accused the electoral officer that was supposed to work with him of collaborating with some people to scuttle the election results in the area.

He stated this while delivering his report to the State Returning Officer, Prof. Florence Obi, at the ongoing election result collation.

He said there was no election in the entire local government area.

He said a crisis fomented by policemen led to his signing the result under duress.

“I signed a report I didn’t believe in. I signed it under duress. I was teargassed. I was locked in the toilet, until a policeman smuggled me out.

“I could not even go out to ease myself. They were monitoring me up and down. At a point, I saw that my life waS in danger, so, I have to sign the results they prepared.

“I called out to my colleagues to tell them that I was in danger here,” he narrated.

Responding to the allegation, the electoral officer who did not give her name, accused the returning officer of not knowing anything about collating election results.

“This man here has said so many things against me. But I observed that he has no experience in collating election results.

“This man does not know his left from his right. The result is full of mutilation. He does not know the difference between conducting election and and collating results.

Prof. Florence Obi, said that she was told about the crisis in the local government area.

“This is the only local government I had a distress call from and I had to call the commissioner of police and told him that the lives of my staff are in danger,” she said.

As it is, a winner might not emerge from the election today, as there was no results declared for Orumba and Ihiala local government areas.

In the result declared at INEC LG office at Ajalli , the APGA candidate won 4826 votes to take the council. APC got 2692 votes and PDP 1,863 votes.

#AnambraDecides: APC, PDP agents kick over results

The All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have protested the results released so far by the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) in the Anambra governorship poll.

Their agents in Onitsha South, Dunukofia, Ayamelum and Anambra East local government areas said the results didn’t reflect reality from the poll.

The APC agent, Chief Chibuzor Obiakor and his PDP counterpart, Dr Alex Obiogbolu, who is Mr Valentine Ozigbo’s Campaign Director-General, said some of the results did not reflect what happened on the field.

Obiakor alleged there was over-voting in Umunnachi in Dunukofia local government area, adding that INEC should put it on record.

In Anambra East local government area, the agents complained the returning officer from the University of Calabar confirmed there were incidences in the area.

They alleged at Enugwu -Otu, there was no election yet results were manufactured and announced by INEC.

The returning officer said he had six incidences in the local government ranging from overvoting, violence, malfunctioning of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System BVAS to failure of officials of INEC to turn up.

In Idemili South, Senator Chris Ngige’s local government area, the returning officer reported that Supervising Presiding officer SPO, absconded with 11 unit results sheets out of 12

As a result, he said 89 polling units were affected with 40,337 voters disenfranchised.

#AnambraDecides: Soludo, Ozigbo, Uba win respective polling units

Early results from the ongoing governorship election in Anambra State show candidates of the three major contending parties Charles Soludo of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Andy Uba of All Progressives Congress (APC), and Valentine Ozigbo of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) all won in their respective polling units.

The APC candidate, who voted at Saint Peter’s Catholic School, Uga Ward 16, Polling Unit 10 of Aguata Local Government, scored 80, followed by APGA with 10 votes, YPP scored five votes while PDP scored two votes.

The candidate of the PDP, who voted at polling unit 010 Social Center, Ward 005, of the Aguata Local Government, Area scored 75 votes, followed by APGA with eight votes while the APC scored two.

The candidate of APGA, who voted at Isuofia Ward 13, Unit 002 in the Aguata LGA, scored 126 votes while PDP scored five and both APC and YPP scored three votes each.

Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said that it has largely resolved the earlier challenges on the malfunctioning of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) across many Polling Units (PUs) for Saturday’s governorship election in Anambra State.

Addressing newsmen yesterday night at the INEC State Headquarters Awka, the state capital the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Anambra State, Dr. Nkwachukwu Orji, said that collation of results of the election would commence on Sunday morning at the collation centre, INEC State Headquarters Awka, the state capital.

Recall TheNewsGuru (TNG) had earlier reported that the commission had extended the accreditation and voting periods of the election from 2.30 pm to 4.00 pm local time over the BVAS challenge.

Orji said in his earlier briefings that this was due to the widespread malfunctioning of the BVAS across many Polling Units (PUs) in the state.

However, during the Saturday night briefing the Anambra REC, Dr. Orji, said the election has progressed generally well despite the initial challenges.

He expressed delight that an appreciable number of citizens of Anambra State turned out to exercise their civic duty of choosing their next governor, notwithstanding initial security concerns.

According to him, “I am happy to report that the technical glitches we experienced with our new BVAS were largely solved. We thank the voters and candidates for patiently waiting for the problem with the devices to be resolved.

“To be sure, these may not have been resolved perfectly everywhere, but the reports we got from our field officers and independent observers convince us that most voters were able to vote with the BVAS, following the extension of the voting period to 4.00 pm and our regulation that any voter on the queue at that time must be allowed to vote.

“As I said in my earlier briefing, any PU where there was a consistent malfunction of the BVAS, and therefore the voters in the Unit were unable to vote, the election will be continued tomorrow.”

Orji, however, said the commission was yet to receive reports of any location where the sustained malfunction of the BVAS led to no election at all.

“Still, we shall continue to receive reports through our usual channels, particularly from the collation of the Form EC40G, which is the official document for recording PUs where elections did not hold or were canceled.”

He also said the election is by no means over. As it has now entered a critical stage of the process, being the collation of results.

He said INEC has made adequate arrangements for collation of the results at the Registration Areas, Local Government Areas, and the state level.

He said, “Results from PUs are already being uploaded to our INEC Result Viewing (IReV) portal; the RA and LGA collation have been progressing well. I implore all stakeholders to be patient while this painstaking process progresses.

“I am glad to announce that the state collation will commence tomorrow at the state collation centre here in our state office at 10 am tomorrow morning.” Citing poor functioning of the Bimodal Accreditation System (BVAS) machines, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had earlier yesterday extended voting in the Anambra State governorship election till today.

The extension, according to the nation’s electoral body, was to allow voters who were unable to vote due to malfunctioning of the BVAS to do so.

BVAS is INEC’s new introduction to help eliminate voter’s impersonation for the election.

But addressing journalists in Awka yesterday, the state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Nkwachukwu Orji, said the extension of voting became necessary to enable more if not all, eligible voters to cast their votes in the areas affected by the malfunctioning of the system.

Orji said the commission is determined to make all votes count, adding that the BVAS malfunctioned because of software glitches.

He also said that the commission was already working to rectify the problem and address complaints of poor functioning of BVAS machines.

He stated: “In line with existing regulations and guidelines of the commission, any intending voter who is on the queue by 4 pm shall be allowed to vote.

“The extension of time arose out of several field reports that voters have had problems with accreditation.”

Orji further said the commission is currently investigating the reason the accreditation devices BVAS have worked perfectly in some Polling Units, but not in others.

He continued: “In cases of malfunction of the BVAS, the Presiding Officer must inform the voters and polling agents that accreditation and voting shall continue tomorrow or at another time determined by the Commission.”

He also noted that deployment was adversely affected by transportation challenges in some locations.

Orji said, “It must be noted that on account of security concerns, some of the transporters that were mobilised and collected 50 per cent of their sign on fee backed out at the last moment, leaving some of our ad-hoc staff stranded.

“Also, some of the trained ad-hoc staff backed out at the last moment. The Commission is on top of these challenges and extant regulations and guidelines will be applied.”

The INEC official appealed to all voters, candidates, stakeholders and political parties to remain calm and law abiding.

APGA accuses Uzodimma of sending fake election results to manipilate Anambra guber

Mr C. Don Adinuba, commissioner for information and public enlightenment, Anambra State, claims 35 buses from Imo State have been mobilised to carry fake election materials to rig the ongoing governorship election in the state.

He accused Imo State governor, Hope Uzodimma of being behind the plot.

According to him, “The Charles Chukwuma Soludo Campaign has just received credible intelligence that about 35 buses left Imo State for Anambra State with election materials about 45 minutes ago.

“The buses are accompanied by men in Nigerian Army combat dress.

“The mission, according to an insider who doesn’t want his name disclosed because of the sensitive nature of his job, is to substitute the election materials used in today’s Anambra State gubernatorial elections with those from Imo, and thus create the impression that the All progressives Congress (APC) is winning the vote.

“The whole enterprise, according to sources, is at the behest of the controversial Imo State governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, chairman of the Andy Uba Gubernatorial Campaign Council.

“Relevant bodies like the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the security agencies as well as election monitors, the media, civil society organizations and the international community are advised to watch out for what has appropriately been called the Hope Uzodimma invasion team in Anambra State.”

BREAKING: INEC extends voting in Anambra till Sunday

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended voting in the Anambra State governorship election till Sunday.

According to the commission, the extension is to enable those who could not vote on Saturday due to the malfunctioning of the Bimodal Voters Accreditation System (BIVAS) machine to do so.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG gathered that the machine failed to work in many units.

Addressing reporters at the INEC office in Awka, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr Nkwachukwu Orji, said the closing of voting had been shifted from 2.30 pm to 4. pm on Saturday, after which the exercise will continue on Sunday in units where voting could not hold.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Mr. Valentine Ozigbo has expressed worry over the poor Internet connectivity experienced by voters in Anambra state as Independent National Electoral Commission deploys Bi-modal Voter Accreditation System (BIVAS) machine.
