Anambra Governorship debate: Maduka outshines others, as Etiaba queries Obiano’s ‘white elephant’ projects

    From Chuks Collins, Awka

The governorship candidate of the Accord Party, in the forthcoming November 6 election in Anambra state, Dr. Godwin Maduka, has reiterated his earlier stand to build 21 satellite universities across the 21 Council areas of the state in order to bring education closer to all, including okada riders, petty traders, artisans and others in the state when he wins the election.

Maduka whose orderly articulated and presented program (manifesto) at the debate received wild ovation clearly portrayed him as an organized and well prepared candidate.

According to one of the participants, Dr Okey Anidebe, “this stands this man out as a very articulate person. Little wonder he’s known as Mr Evidence whose numerous personal achievements in his community and in parts of the state show he really has/knows what it takes to lead by example.

“If he could on his own and with his personal resources build a multi-storey international medical Centre, research hub, high court, police station, churches, roads, officials quarters for the officers and many others, it shows he’s a leader to trust.

In his presentation during the debate, Dr Maduka said, “All the money we will use to run my government will come from foreign investors. I will ensure Anambra starts production of telephone handsets immediately I take over, stop medical tourism overseas, etc.

“As I speak to you, no single thatch house in my town. I replaced all with brick houses and I will do same to all the poor communities in the state, if given the chance to governed come March 18, 2022”, he added.

As he reeled out projects after projects that he had executed, others continued shifting in their chairs.

Mr. Valentine Ozigbo, who is the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) disclosed that his administration would leverage on five clusters; Onitsha, Nkpor, Nnewi, Awka and Omambala to develop Anambra beyond the imagination of all.

Hear him, “I will provide sufficient infrastructure, boost agriculture to let Omambala cluster feel Government presence.” While the narrative about Awka that he described as presently a glorified city in Nigeria under the incumbent Obiano led-APGA government would change.

For the Allied People’s Movement (APM) candidate, Col. Geoffrey Onyejegbu, his main plank was to run a transparent administration, and charged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on credible outcome.

According to the retired soldier, “This state must have respect for peace and order. As a security expert, I am pleading with our young men not to go near violence, and our leaders must discourage violence before, during and after the election.”

Nze Akachukwu Nwankpo, of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) urged electorates not to vote those who had held Anambra’s economy hostage. He said, “Give me your votes. I will run Umunna (inclusive)government. Every umunnna will be part of my government.”
He warned youths not to allow themeselves to be used for violence at the election.

Chief Bennett Etiaba of the Action Alliance (AA) promised to stop the siren harassment by Anambra bigwigs who often come home during festive seasons to intimidate the locals people with their sirens, vehicles and police escorts who chase the poor natives in all direction.

He saw as a waste and a white elephant project the ongoing construction of international conference centre by governor Willie Obiano, “when the Prof Dora Akunyili Women Development Centre is still an abandoned project.

Etiaba noted that building an international conference centre adjacent to Akunyili Centre was unconscionable, waste of resources as it has no direct bearing to the quality of life of Anambra citizens. That having such facilities at that location would increase traffic gridlocks on the Enugu-Onitsha Federal highway, by Government House Awka.

He also promised to provide enabling environment for every business in the state to thrive, and called on the youths to shun anti social conduct and acts of violence during voting.

Incidentally two major candidates -Prof Chukwuma Soludo of the ruling All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) and Senator Andy Uba of the All Progressive Congress (APC), were conspicuously absent at the Manifesto Defense held in Awka at the weekend.

The program titled “2021 Anambra Governorship Election: Face the Voters”, was organized by Kwechiri Unity Forum in collaboration with Arise Television, and moderated by the former Special Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan on Media and Publicity, Dr Reuben Abati.

A sizable number of the candidates also stayed away. They included Dr. Obiora Okonkwo of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), Senator Ifeanyi Ubah of the Young Progressives Party (YPP); Dr. Obinna Uzor, of Social Democratic Party (SDP); Dr Chidozie Nwankwo, of Action Alliance Congress (AAC); Dr. Obiora Agbasimalo, of Labour Party, Comrade Afam Nwaokafor, National Rescue Movement (NRM), and Chief Nnamdi Nwawuo of the People’s Redemption Party (PRP).

In his opening remark, the National Coordinator of Kwechiri Unity Forum, Mr. Anselem Onuorah, said that all the 18 political parties contesting the Nov 6 election were invited for the debate, and blamed the ongoing campaigns partially reasons for their absence.

Dr Abati, who grilled the candidates in attendance on leadership, economy, agriculture, health, education, infrastructure, election security, insecurity and the deplorable condition of roads across the state expressed satisfaction with their efforts.

The candidates as well as participants called on Gov Obiano to declare a state of emergency on the deplorable state of roads in the state. They bemoaned the fate of the governor’s APGA candidate, Prof Soludo whose main access road has been cut off from the rest of the state. They wonder what he would be telling his audience while campaigning, if his governor cannot give him access to his countryhome at Isuofia.

Anambra: APC tells EFCC to probe, unearth ‘monumental deception’ in Obiano’s government

APC chairman in Anambra, Chief Basil Ejidike, on Monday in Awka, charged the EFCC to probe the finances of Anambra State to unearth “monumental deception’’ that thrives in the state.

He said in a statement signed by his Media Adviser, Chief Dan Okeke that Anambra government had been fraudulent in the use of its monthly Security Vote amounting to billions of Naira.

“Anambra as a state has not recorded significant growth and development since inception of Gov. Willy Obiano’s leadership. To maintain existing developmental structures in the state remains unattainable,’’ he said.

Ejidike called on APGA government to give account of all state monies in its control meant to be used to develop the state.

Development has neither been visible nor felt by the people of Anambra, he stated.

He advised APGA to face its business of governance and stop calling APC names.

“We urge APGA to focus on its campaign and leave APC alone.

“Harassing the State House of Assembly members who left APGA for APC is a distraction for the party; proferring solutions to APGA’s internal problems should be paramount to its leadership,’’ Ejidike said.

He also reminded APGA that in a democracy, there is freedom of association.

He urged more members of the state’s House of Assembly to live APGA and join the ruling national party to take the southeast to mainstream national politics.

“Tread on the path of your colleagues to join APC so as to return the lost glory of Anambra,’’ Ejidike appealed.

He also alleged that APGA was losing focus and that there were infrastructural deficits in roads, potable water, power, healthcare delivery, quality education, women and youth empowerment and security.

He also called on the electorate to shun APGA at the governorship election holding on Nov. 6.

Ejidike assured the electorate that APC’s candidate Sen. Andy Uba would change the fortunes of the state if elected.

Responding to the charges, Chief Norbeth Obi, State Chairman of APGA, said that the party did not have to waste energy on APC’s accusation and charged it to meet APGA at the November polls.

Obi said APGA was concentrating and consolidating its plans to ensure grand victory come Nov. 6 and had no time to banter words with the APC.

Also responding, Mr C-Don Adinuba, Anambra Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, diffused the APC’s submissions about the APGA-led government in Anambra.

Adinuba said that for record purposes, APGA government invited the EFCC to look into its accounts in March 2018 and it gave it a clean bill of health after the exercise.

“APGA government is the only one that has ever invited EFCC to look into its accounts.

He added that Anambra had the lowest unemployment rate in Nigeria with 13.1 per cent rate against 27.1 per cent nationally

“Economists all the world regard employment rate as most important indicator of the performance of any government,’’ Adinuba said.

He added that the National Bureau of Statistic also declared Anambra’s economy as the best managed in Nigeria.

He said that the government led by Gov. Obiano was the only one in Nigeria that built an international airport within 15 months and also built an international convention centre, the best in Africa with a sitting capacity of 12,000 persons.

He said that in the next one month, Anambra would deliver the newest international stadium all built without borrowing money from any bank.

Adinuba stressed that the APGA government under Gov. Obiano had no fear of any checks on its financial records.

He advised APC to arm itself with verifiable facts at all times before going to press.

Adinuba also urged APC to clean up the image of its flag bearer at the governorship election, Sen. Andy Uba, and compare it with that of APGA’s “world class’’ candidate in the person Prof. Charles Soludo.

Anambra : I’ll produce 1, 000 millionaires yearly if voted governor – Soludo

Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, Governorship Candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Anambra, says he will produce one thousand millionaires yearly if elected.

He made the pledge at the official flag off of his campaign in Awka on Saturday, ahead of the Anambra Nov. 6 governorship election.

Soludo, a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) used the event to formally present his manifesto.

The official flag off of Soludo’s campaign, was coming barely 41 days to the election, and is the first official flag off by any of the 18 political parties fielding candidates for the election.

Soludo said the manifesto was a well-thought-out document and had all in it for all round transformation of Anambra.

“If I am elected the next governor, my administration will produce one thousand youth millionaires every year. By the grace of God, the next APGA government will ensure that 130, 000 jobs are created yearly in Anambra,” he promised.

Soludo, flanked by his running mate, Dr Ifeanyi Ibezim, said his vision was to ensure that any child born in Anambra would not leave the state in search of greener pastures elsewhere.

Gov. Willie Obiano who also spoke, said he was proud to have Soludo as his potential successor, adding that the former CBN governor had the pedigree and contact to drive Anambra to the next level.

Obiano who listed the signature projects he did to include the Anambra Airport, 12, 000 seating capacity International Conference Centre and Awka Stadium, said he was convinced that Soludo would do better than him.

“The former APGA government before me did well, my government performed better and I hope if elected, Soludo will be best,” he said.

Obiano said, with Soludo, APGA would have landslide victory at the poll.

JUST IN: Obiano leads protest against IPOB sit-at-home order in Anambra

The Anambra State governor, Willie Obiano, on Monday led a protest against the continued sit-at-home order by the Indigenous People of Biafra.

Though IPOB had later suspended the order, residents had continued to stay at home every Monday apparently because of fear of possible attack by hoodlums.

On Monday, the state government moved to some streets in Awka, the state capital to enforce the return to businesses in the state.

The governor who led members of his executive council during the protest visited banks and markets at the state capital.

At Eke Awka market, the governor asked traders to open their shops.

He said, “The state must avoid giving urchins the chance to take over the helm of affairs. I chose to lead from the front to end this fear of molestation, harassment, intimidation.

Following the governor’s action, socioeconomic activities, including transportation, banking and market activities sprang up around 1 pm in the area in earnest

Obiano had on Sunday threatened to seal banks and punish market and motor-park leaders who would dare stay at home on Mondays or any day so declared by the Indigenous People of Biafra.

He directed banks, markets and motor parks in the state to be in operation on Monday unfailingly.

He said the sit-at-home compliance adversely affected the Gross Domestic Product and the general economy of the state, stating that banks that failed to open on such days would be sealed for a week, adding that if such banks refused to open subsequently, they would be permanently closed.

While addressing transport leaders at the Governor’s Lodge, Amawbia, on Sunday Obiano said “I urged the commuters to feel free to ply their usual routes across the state on Monday, whether they ride or drive motorcycles, keke, shuttle, buses.

“If markets don’t open, I will sack the leadership of the market. If the market and park leaders don’t comply, their leadership will be changed within two weeks.”

IPOB sit-at-home: ‘They are invisible voices’; Obiano orders banks, markets in Anambra to operate fully from Monday

Anambra State Governor Willie Obiano has ordered markets, banks, transport business owners, among others to ignore the sit-at-home order and go about their businesses from Monday, September 13.

The governor gave the order on Saturday after a meeting with stakeholders and members of the State Security Council.

Heads of commercial business operations including markets and transport leaders were also at the meeting held at the governor’s lodge in the state.

He urged residents of the state to ignore the Monday (weekly) sit-at-home order by the leadership of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

“The markets should open, if they do not open, I would sack the leadership of the market and shut the market.

“Invisible voice says ‘sit at home?’ And, you just comply and loose money. You don’t know who says sit-at-home, you just loose money,” the governor said while addressing the business leaders.

He also urged them to help the government to solve the menace of continuous sit-at-home compliance.

Governor Obiano said it is totally unacceptable as it has become inimical to the state’s economy.

“You need to help us to solve this nonsense. It is absolute nonsense. That’s a warning. If you don’t do that, we will change your leadership,” the governor said.

Governor Obiano also at the meeting welcomed the new Commissioner of Police, Tony Olotu, who will take over from the former CP, Chris Owolabi.

  • Anambra guber: A’Court affirms Soludo as APGA flagbearer, awards N10m against appellant

Anambra guber: A’Court affirms Soludo as APGA flagbearer, awards N10m against appellant

The Court of Appeal Abuja Division, Thursday affirmed Prof Charles Soludo as the governorship candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) in the November 6 governorship election in Anambra state.

While dismissing the appeal marked CA/AW/256/2021 by Chief Edozie Njoku against Sylvester Ezeokenwa, the court described it as constituting an abuse of court process.

The three members of the appellate court led by the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Monica Dongban-Messen unanimously agreed that allowing the appeal would tantamount to sitting on appeal on the judgment of the Kano Division of the court.

Justice Jummai Sankeyl while delivering ruling on the appeal, held that the appeal constituted an abuse of court process, having been bound by the judgement of Kano Division delivered on August 10.

The court also held that it lacked jurisdiction to entertain the suit, saying doing so will amount to sitting on its own judgment.

The sum of N10 million was also awarded against the appellant, in favour of Sylvester Ezeokenwa and All Progressive Grand Alliance

APGA this medium, recalled, has been engulfed in intra-party crisis which has led to its factionalisation. While one is led by Victor Oye, the other faction is headed by Jude Okeke.

While Prof Charles Soludo is the governorship candidate of an APGA faction led by the former, the other candidate from the same party, Chukwuma Umeoji on the other hand, emerged from the latter group for the November 6 election.

Recall that the Kano Division of the Court of Appeal had set aside the judgment of the Jigawa Hgh Court on the leadership tussle in APGA, saying it has no territorial or substantive jurisdiction to hear the suit.

In setting aside the judgment of the Jigawa High Court, the Appeal Court said all the proceedings at the lower court were null.

In addition, the court held that for denying APGA and Victor Oye fair hearing by hearing the suit behind their back, the judgment of Musa Ubale of Jigawa State High Court, was unconstitutional and a complete nullity.

  • Anambra People Cannot Accept De-Marketing of their State – Don Adinuba

Anambra People Cannot Accept De-Marketing of their State – Don Adinuba

    1. As the campaign for the November 6 gubernatorial election in Anambra State has started in earnest, it is understandable that some candidates and their foot soldiers have engaged in relentless rounds of misinformation and disinformation. There is nothing wrong with political parties, their candidates and supporters criticizing one another. Much as it is desirable for the political gladiators to base their utterances on facts, we know this is hardly likely to be the case.

    2. What is clearly unacceptable is when political parties, their candidates and agents in the forthcoming election set out to manufacture facts about their state with a view to denigrating it in the eyes of rational members of the public. This kind of denigration has grave implications for the development of our dear state. For example, one major driver of the huge investment inflow into the last state in the last seven years amounting to between four and five billion dollars ($4-5b) is the impressive reputation which the State has enjoyed throughout the country in recent years. To attempt to destroy this enviable reputation is to attempt to destroy investments in the state. Only enemies of the State can think of such a thing.

    3. Therefore, the penchant of some politicians to resort to the social media to make preposterous allegations of humongous financial abuses against the State Government as part of the disinformation strategy designed to win the November 6 governorship election stands condemnable. The amounts they publish, without any form of evidence, as what the State Government has received in recent years as statutory funds are wild figures. They beggar belief.

    4. There is compelling evidence that financial resources of the people of Anambra State are are well managed. For example, Anambra State and petroleum-rich Rivers State are the two states in the country with the best fiscal responsibility index, according to BudgIT, a highly respected nongovernment organization (NGO) funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The latest unemployment figures by the National Bureau of Statistics show that Anambra State, with 13.1 per cent unemployment rate, has the lowest unemployment rate in the country whereas the average national unemployment rate is 27.1 per cent. To many economists around the world, the employment rate in any economy is the most important indicator of the economic performance of the place. The implication of the NBS publication of the latest unemployment rates is that the bureau has stated in unmistaken terms that the Anambra State economy has been managed better than that of any other state in Nigeria, including the Federal Capital Territory.

    5. Only an exceptionally prudent state like Anambra can build a world-class international airport in less than two years with no bank loan anywhere in the world and without owing the contactors. Indeed, the people of Anambra State are eminently proud of the fact that the state Government is about to deliver the largest conference and convention centre in Africa—with 13,000 seating capacity—without any loan. Remarkable also is that the State Government has not borrowed a kobo from any bank to finance the modern stadium it is about to complete in Awka.

    6. It is quite regrettable that indigenes of our state are carrying out extreme propaganda against the very state that they want to govern by all means. They have even made videos of failed Federal Government roads in Anambra State and blame the very deplorable state of roads like the Amawbia-Ekwulobia-Uga- Road which leads to Akokwa in Imo State on the Anambra State Government. The irony is that the very political party whose candidate and supporters are responsible for the disinformation is the All Progressives Congress (APC). Its candidate hails from Uga in Aguata Local Government Area; he spent eight years in the Senate without addressing the terrible state of the federal road which passes through his hometown.

    7. To worsen matters, the same party has been sponsoring news on the social media alleging that the six All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) members of the State House of Assembly who last week succumbed to the asphyxiating Federal Might, against the wishes of the Anambra people who elected them, are in discussion with some other legislators to impeach the State governor.

    8. What the party is stating in other words is that it wants to create a deep crisis in Anambra State. It would seem that any time a particular individual wants to contest the governorship of the state it deliberately foments trouble. The situation brings to mind the illegal impeachment of the first APGA governor in the state, Mr Peter Obi, which the same forces masterminded. Good a thing that the Supreme Court was to reverse the perfidious act and return the APGA governor to office without delay.

    9. Rather than unveil their development programmes for the Anambra people, some parties and candidates as well as their agents and supporters are determined to de-market their state, and cause tremendous confusion and crisis all over the place. This is not how to achieve gubernatorial ambitions. In any case, Anambra people are too discerning and sophisticated for certain political manipulations and machinations.

God bless Anambra State, the Light of the Nation.

    Signed

    C. Don Adinuba

Commissioner for Information & Public Enlightenment.
