Drug traders kick as NAFDAC shut market down in Anambra

Angry traders have staged a protest following the closure of Ogbo-Ogwu Bridgehead Drug Market in Onitsha, Anambra State by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

The traders, which were more than 2,000 demonstrators, who held banners which reads: Concerned and Genuine Members of Ogbo-Ogwu Drug Market, expressed their distress over the situation, which they claim has caused significant hardship and financial strain.

According to the aggrieved traders, five traders of their colleagues have died and many others have been hospitalized due to stress and hunger.

The protesters also accused the government agency of demanding a payment of N2 million from each trader before allowing the market to reopen.

Ifeanyi Chinedu, the National Convener and Secretary of the Concerned Genuine Members of Ogbo-Ogwu Drug Market, told newsmen that their shops remain locked, despite NAFDAC’s assertions that they have been reopened.

Chinedu called on the Federal Government to intervene with NAFDAC to facilitate the reopening of the market and to investigate allegations regarding the seizure of counterfeit drugs.

He listed some of their demands, saying, “We, the members of the Ogbo-Ogwu drug market, after our long-awaited first general meeting with the caretaker committee chairman and his executives since the invasion of the market by NAFDAC officials, made the following declarations.

“That NAFDAC invaded our various shops in our absence and carted away properly registered goods worth billions of Naira.

“They also carted away drugs from multinational companies from the USA, Germany, Turkey, and Pakistan, all of international standards and impeccable qualities.

“The claims by NAFDAC that all the drugs they carted away are fake and substandard are inhumane and malicious lies meant to tarnish the image of thousands of responsible and genuine businessmen and women at the Ogbo-Ogwu drug market.

“We challenge the Federal Government to set up a high-powered panel of inquiry to investigate the goods carted away in over 60 trailer loads with the aim of ascertaining the veracity of the claims of the NAFDAC Director-General and some of her corrupt officials.

“That the claims by NAFDAC officials that our various shops were being searched in our presence are another set of malicious and fabricated lies meant to carpet their heinous crime of barbaric breaking, entering, searching and looting of someone’s shop in his absence, including boutiques in the market in this 21st century and democratic world.”

The traders also passed a vote of no confidence on the market caretaker committee chairman and his executive and called for their immediate resignation.

They also claimed that NAFDAC has imposed a fine of ₦2 million before any shop would be reopened, saying it is for documentation purposes.

NAFDAC has mandated that each shop owner pays ₦2 million to them before opening the market; this is ridiculous. We reject in its entirety the criminal fines imposed on us by NAFDAC and call on the Federal Minister of Health and National Security Adviser, the National Assembly, to come to our rescue.

“We demand the immediate and unconditional reopening of the market to genuine businessmen and women of the Ogbo-Ogwu drug market to ascertain the level of looting bequeathed on genuine businessmen and women in the market. Over five persons have died, and several others have been hospitalised due to depression.

“We call for the immediate prosecution of those caught with suspected fake and substandard drugs, in conjunction with the present caretaker committee, who collaborated with them to bring those deadly drugs into the market.

“We remain law-abiding to the Federal Government led by President Bola Tinubu. We also pledge our loyalty to the state government led by Prof Chukwuma Soludo,” he added.

JTF rescues abducted Catholic priest in Anambra

The police in Anambra have confirmed the rescue of Rev. Fr. Stephen Echezona, abducted at Ichida in Anaocha Local Government Area of the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the rescue in a statement issued on Sunday in Awka.

He stated that the rescue operation was carried out by the Joint Security Task Force (JTF).

According to Ikenga, JTF, comprising the police, military, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and Anambra vigilance group operatives in Ichida and Ihiala, successfully secured the release of the priest at Ihiala.

”In the early hours of today, March 23, a joint security team comprising the police, military, civil defence, and vigilante operatives rescued Rev. Fr. Stephen Echezona at Ihiala,” he stated.

He further explained that the priest was rescued unharmed.

Ikenga said Echezona was abducted at a petrol station in Ichida by the criminals operating in a white Lexus SUV without a number plate.

He added that the operatives engaged the assailants in a gun duel, forcing them to abandon the SUV in an attempt to escape.

Ikenga stated that they, however, took the priest hostage as they fled the scene.

He said a coordinated pursuit by security operatives across various checkpoints led to the criminals abandoning Echezona at Ihiala before escaping through a nearby bush.

He maintained that the JTF recovered the abandoned SUV while efforts were ongoing to track down the hoodlums and recover the priest’s Toyota Highlander.

Also, police operatives attached to the Obosi Division caught and detained a man with a Beretta pistol on Sunday.

On the same day, security operatives rescued three kidnapped victims on the Onitsha-Owerri Expressway in Ozubulu.

Meanwhile, the command has assured residents of their commitment to ensuring their safety and apprehending those responsible for criminal activities in the state.

My administration did not borrow in 3 years – Soludo

Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Charles Soludo has said that his administration achieved significant progress in infrastructure and human capital development in three years without borrowing money.

Soludo made the disclosure on Sunday during a thanksgiving Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Awka, ahead of the celebrations marking his third anniversary in office on March 17.

He said: “I express my gratitude to the Almighty God because it is a journey ordained by God. Tomorrow, March 17, we will be three years in office.

“Three years ago, we applied for this job and you employed us based on trust. Looking back on the promises we made, it is fair to say so far, so good.

“We have commissioned over 750 kilometers of roads, with more than 400km already completed. Additionally, we have recruited over 8,000 teachers and rehabilitated public schools to enhance the education sector.

“We achieved remarkable progress in youth empowerment, agriculture, security, and the health sector. Today, Anambra is leading in health in Nigeria.

“We have done all these without borrowing one kobo in three years.

The governor said his goal was to transform the state into the Dubai, Taiwan, and Silicon Valley of Africa, leveraging its abundant resources and exceptional human capital.

“We still have one more year left in this tenure, and I want to assure you that we will continue working diligently every single day to fulfill the promises we made to you.

“So far, we are on track to laying the foundations for realising the Anambra of our dreams,” he said.

Soludo thanked residents for their support and prayers.

Earlier in his sermon, Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Bishop Matthew Kukah, said that serving as a governor, senator, or bishop is a sacred contract with both God and the electorate.

According to him, it is a form of stewardship, where one is entrusted with duties that demand accountability to the people and adherence to personal principles.

Kukah praised Gov. Soludo for his accomplishments over the past three years and for his expression of gratitude to God.

“I’m from Kaduna State, but I must admit I’m jealous of the progress in Anambra. You have consistently had governors who leave their unique mark in terms of good governance.

“Anambra is a state with great men and women like Cardinal Francis Arinze, late Chinua Achebe, Chimamanda Adichie, late Dr Alex Ekwueme and many others. And I’m happy that Gov. Soludo is consolidating on the gains.

“I have seen some of the projects by Gov. Soludo and I commend him. These are projects that will improve the quality of life of the people.

“I pray that your agenda for securing the people, for education, health, women and youth empowerment will be achieved by God’s Grace for the betterment of the people,” Kukah said.

Others he said were Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, Chukwuma Umeoji, Valentine Ozigbo, Johnbosco Onunkwo and Edozie Madu.

NAN reports that the aspirants are to contest for the party’s ticket at its governorship primary election slated for Saturday, April 5, 2025.

  • Anambra 2025: I’m open to coalition that can stop Soludo – Nwosu

Anambra 2025: I’m open to coalition that can stop Soludo – Nwosu

Mr John Nwosu an aspirant in the Nov. 8 governorship election in Anambra says he will support any coalition that will stop the reelection of Gov. Chukwuma Soludo.

Nwosu, who is aspiring on the platform of the Labour Party said this while speaking to newsmen in Awka on Monday.

He said Anambra was going through its worst government since the fourth republic and needed redemption even though if it will take a coalition of people who were ready to provide a better deal for the people.

Nwosu said the development going on in Anambra is not commensurate with the increase in resources accruing to the state.

“The new infrastructure the government claim to have built are hardly commensurate with the revenue the state has garnered in three years, focusing on infrastructure at the expense of peace, security and quality of life is counterproductive.

“In fact, talks about coalition are ongoing, the common denominator is the collective will to bring this disastrous administration to an end.

“Anambra’s interest supersedes any personal interests or ambitions. If it will take a coalition of like minds to stop Gov. Chukwuma Soludo and his cabal, so be it.

“I am ready to be part of that coalition, we must all get involved in rescuing Anambra,” he said.

Nwosu said he was confident that the 2025 election would be free, fair and that the masses were now aware enough to make electoral choices and defend them

He said he was the best candidate for LP ticket and most qualified to takeover from Soludo while reiterating his commitment to serve for one term of four years.

“I believe the people of Anambra State will get the government they deserve if they turn out boldly to vote for such a government.

“There will only be one LP candidate after the April 5 primaries, if it is me, I will expect my fellow aspirants to rally around and support me, if it is someone else, I will do the same,” he said.

Anambra Govt. suspends health worker for refusing to attend to pregnant women

The Anambra Government has suspended a health worker, Mrs Njideka Ezeihejiofor, for refusing to attend to a pregnant woman who delivered a stillborn baby outside the health facility on Tuesday.

The suspension of Ezeihejiofor was approved on Friday by the disciplinary panel chaired by the state’s Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike, after investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Appearing before the panel, Ezeihejiofor, who is the Officer-in-Charge at Ukpo primary healthcare centre, said she turned back the pregnant patient when she came in to the facility at 11a.m, due to fatigue.

“When the patient came in, she said she was about six-months pregnant and that she could no longer feel her baby kicking. I told her to go to a higher health facility to get the best care.

“Few minutes later, some persons ran to the health centre and said the pregnant woman just had a baby two poles away and I should come and attend to her. I refused because I was afraid,” she said.

Meanwhile, Obidike said the panel found that Ezeihejiofor, refused to examine the pregnant woman or provide a referral letter when she visited the centre.

“When she was called to assist and separate the placenta after the woman delivered the stillborn just two poles away from the facility, Ezeihejiofor reportedly declined,” he said.

The Commissioner condemned her actions, noting that a retained placenta could have caused the woman to bleed to death.

“A retained placenta can cause life-threatening bleeding and even death. That patient could have bled to death if not for the prompt intervention of another health worker within the area.

“The panel however, resolved that Ezeihejiofor be immediately demoted and suspended without pay while the other staff in the centre be queried,” he said.

Similarly, Mrs Blessing Offor, the Officer-in-Charge of Uke Primary Healthcare Centre in Idemili North, was found to have been consistently absent from duty.

The panel suspended her salary indefinitely and she was directed to refund eight months of wages previously paid during her absence.

Obidike emphasised the state’s commitment to high-quality healthcare delivery, warning that such unprofessional behavior undermined Gov. Chukwuma Soludo’s investment and health policies.

The commissioner urged health workers unwilling to fulfill their duties to resign quietly or face disciplinary measures.

He also urged residents to report incidents of negligence via designated contact numbers displayed at healthcare facilities.

Mrs Chisom Uchem, Executive Secretary, Anambra State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Mr Chris Azor, Coordinator, Anambra Civil Society Network and others were members of the panel.

  • Anambra traditional ruler nabbed in community’s insecurity problem

Anambra traditional ruler nabbed in community’s insecurity problem

There is looming tension in Enugwu-Agidi community over the arrest of a suspected kidnapper Chukwudi Tansi by Soludo’s Agunechemba team .

Recently , the Social media was awash with news about the arrest of Chukwudi Tansi, a member of the Enugwu-Agidi Community Vigilante, apprehended with a cache of firearms, which exposed his alleged involvement in criminal activities that have long plagued Enugwu-Agidi community.

What adds more fuel to the fire is the implication of the traditional ruler of the community in the unfolding drama, as revealed by the President General (PG) of the community, Hon Chukwuebuka Onuorah

Speaking to journalists, the PG, Mr. Onuorah, expressed vindication . He pointed fingers at the traditional ruler for nominating Tansi to the community Vigilante despite prior warnings from the PG about Tansi’s possession of firearms.

Speaking further, Onuorah said he went as far as writing to the Inspector General of Police, citing threats to his life and the illegal possession of weapons by Tansi, a willing tool in the hand of the traditional ruler.

Part of his letter to the Inspector-General of Police reads:

“After my inauguration, I have received series of threats from the Traditional Ruler of Enugwu-Agidi HRH Mike Okekeuche of Umuakwuelo-Etiti village, Enugwu-Agidi in Njikoka LGA of Anambra State, Nigeria, ranging from forceful invasion of my residence and privacy and restriction of my free movement.
On Friday, 29th March, 2024 at exactly 11:07am, my residence was surrounded and invaded by heavily armed unknown faces who later introduced themselves as members of the Nigeria Police Force, claimed to be acting on the instructions of HRH Mike Okekeuche, took me to an unknown destination, but I return glory to God, that the unknown gun men vehemently warned me to denounce my position as the President General of Enugwu-Agidi Brotherly Union Nigeria (EBU-NIG) so that Igwe’s choice will be installed and later released me unhurt.
“The Igwe HRH Mike Okekeuche, through one Chukwudi Tansi and Okonkwo Clement Ugochukwu, well-known members of outlawed IPOB, who parade themselves as soldiers and moving around the community with AK47 rifles have on several occasions attacked me with their guns, threatening to kill me, except I resign and step down from my position as the President General of my Community, and Igwe’s choice installed, that even the local Police are afraid of them. The confidence reposed on me by the good people of Enugwu-Agidi, I do not wish to give away; hence I had to run away for my dear life.
“Sir, in this circumstance, I am writing this petition with hope of consolation vis-a-vis calling attention of Police IRT, Abuja whose track record in tackling heinous crimes is visible to the blind and audible to the deaf in Nigeria, to arrest, and prosecute the above named unscrupulous criminal elements and all that are involved no matter whose ox is gored. Peradventure my complaints get to you late, and my life taken away, you should at least know my killer for I do not wish to join the long list of unresolved murders”.

Corroborating the PG’s account, a social media user from Enugwu-Agidi, Ezeobi, raised pertinent questions about influential figures aiding Tansi’s evasion of justice despite his involvement in serious criminal activities.

In light of these revelations, the PG is now urging for a thorough police investigation to expose the support network shielding individuals like Chukwudi Tansi.

  • Nigeria has no state religion, only manipulators of religion – By Owei Lakemfa

Nigeria has no state religion, only manipulators of religion – By Owei Lakemfa

Anambra State Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo in a Trumpian manner, made several fallacious and specious statements at the December 2024 dedication of a new church building in Onitsha. For example, the press quoted him as saying: “Since the inception of my administration, we have declared war on criminals, their shrines, priests and burnt down their idols.”

In this claim, he tries to present non-Christians and non-Muslims as the criminals in the state. This is a fallacy. Criminals including elites looting our common patrimony, cut across all religions. In fact, many criminals who claim adherence to foreign religions, use the proceeds of their crime to go on pilgrimages. When he talked about declaring war on “their shrines”    Soludo exhibits his severe limitation of the English language.

The Oxford Dictionary explains that a shrine is: “a place regarded as holy because of its associations with a divinity or a sacred person or relic, marked    by a building    or other construction.” So, the building he went to open in Onitsha, is nothing but a shrine.

Then he mentioned priests; but it is not traditional religion alone that has priests, all major religions I know including Christianity which he claims to practice, also have priests.    Soludo    proudly proclaims that he has: “ burnt down their idols.” An idol is an image or representation of the Almighty. The fact that churches have the images of the cross, Jesus or    Mary, does not mean those are what Christians worship, it simply means that they are images or some representation or symbol.

So, if Soludo has been involved in burning idols, then he is publicly confessing to criminality and deserves to be tried and imprisoned once he ceases to be governor and loses his immunity. He wails that: “”Idolatry is the fastest growing religion in the state.” As I explained earlier, traditional religion adherents, at least in Nigeria, do not worship idols; these are mere representations.

Rather, they believe in God, and this has been so for thousands of years before Christianity.    So, it was not foreigners    who taught    Africans about God.    Thousands of years before Abraham was reportedly called from Ur of the Chaldees, the Yorubas knew God as Olorun or Olodumare, the Hausas call him Ubangiji while the Igbos call him Chineke, Olisa or Chukwu, which is the governor’s middle name.

In any case, how can it be a state matter that a particular religion is allegedly winning more adherents? How does such concern put food on the table of the Anambra people? How does it lead to the provision of more schools, hospitals, houses or jobs? Is Governor Soludo in reality such a jobless man?

In addressing imaginary enemies, Soludo said:  “They can come with whatever they want to but with the Bible in our right hand, we shall prevail.” Wrong! What the Governor as the chief security officer of Anambra State    needs to wield in his right hand is not the Bible, but the law, and in his left hand, the sword of justice. He was not elected into office as a priest, but to govern in accordance with the constitution.

Soludo in a self-righteous manner proclaimed on the rooftops: “We must not take it for granted. Pope Francis preaches ecumenism. I just don’t preach it, I try to live it out.”    Such claims of piety, cut no ice. Religion is an issue between a person and God and, only God knows who truly worships him. Jesus Christ had settled such matters thousands of years ago when he was quoted in Mathew 7: 21-23 as saying: “Not everyone who says to me ‘Lord, Lord’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven” What is expected of Soludo as a Governor is not to shout around about ecumenism, but to promote the unity of    all Nigerians irrespective of religion, ethnic nationality, regionalism and political affiliation.

Soludo at the ceremony, proclaimed Anambra a Christian State. This, like most Soludo talks and programmes, is empty talk. Was this a proclamation of the State Assembly, or the product of a referendum? This false claim is an impeachable offence as it is a blatant violation of the constitution. Section 10 states in simple English: “The Government of the Federation or State shall not adopt any religion as State religion.”

If Soludo were a man of honour, based on this his patently false claim, should have resigned and returned to his profession of economic speculation and preaching the discredited gospel of the Western Structural Adjustment Programme, SAP which ruined most African countries including Nigeria.

This Soludo declaration which is part of the strategy of causing confusion and disunity amongst the Nigeria people, is an old discredited one. This dates back to colonial times when the colonialists championed the divisive politics and slogan of ‘Muslim North’ in reference to Northern Nigeria which in reality, was, and remains, a multi-religious, multi-ethnic, multi-lingual and multi-cultural society. The British colonialists were so vicious, and that in order to sponsor religious divide in Northern Nigeria, it consciously excluded Christians from being admitted into Katsina College, the only school in the 1920s providing high school education in the North.

Some years ago, some state Governors imposed Sharia based on claims that the states they ruled were Muslim States. Those governors succeeded so well that when the extremist fruits they planted sprouted into Boko Haram and bandits, even they themselves cannot comfortably live    in their states. They became muffled choristers of religious de-radicalization in Northern Nigeria.

Today, there is a similar retrogressive movement in Western Nigeria. There are now traditional rulers who want to ban traditional religion in favour    of their own private religion. There are also those who are obviously profiting from a campaign to introduce Sharia in the area. When such campaigns bear fruits as they did in the North, such characters will flee the land.

Promotion of religious extremism continues in various forms. For instance, while Jesus Christ fasted for forty days, a leading Nigerian church, obviously in order to get ahead of its rivals,    has in 2025 decreed 100 days of fasting. Apart from the health of the adherents who are engaged in these marathon fast, what sense does it make to get a people to fast for 100 of the 355 days in a year?  So while serious countries like the United States and China will be at work, producing, some Nigerians will be spending about one third of a year fasting and praying.

We need to call to order, people misusing religion for divisive politics and private gains; violating the secular provisions of the constitution and generally, luring Nigerians into lethargy when they should be productive.
