    Police confirm attack on Naval checkpoint in Anambra

    The Police Command in Anambra has confirmed an attack on some Naval Ratings at a checkpoint near Enamel Ware Junction on Onitsha – Owerri Highway by hoodlums on Tuesday.

    The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed the incident in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday.

    Ikenga said that the command sent a response team to the scene at about 6:30p.m., when it received a distress call that there was sporadic shooting in the area.

    “The team went there to repel the attack.

    “Investigation is still ongoing but preliminary investigation revealed that the hoodlums arrived the checkpoint in an unmarked tinted vehicle,” he said.

    Ikenga, who declined comment on whether there was any casualty during the attack, said efforts were ongoing to apprehend those behind the attack.

    He also denied social media reports that there was another attack at the Bridgehead, Onitsha, on Wednesday, assuring the public of the command’s resolve to flush out criminals from the state.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that hoodlums killed no fewer than nine persons including minors, in Ukpomachi village, Awkuzu, Oyi Local Government Area of the state early Monday morning.

    The incident had left students of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) in Anambra, living off the Igbariam campus, to flee their off-campus lodges for fear of reprisal attack.

    Attacks: Obiano imposes curfew on six Anambra communities

    The Governor Willie Obiano led Anambra State Government has imposed a curfew on six communities in the state, following an attack by gunmen on Monday.

    TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that the communities are Igbariam, Aguleri, Umueri, Nteje, Awkuzu And Umunya. Nine people were reportedly killed after hoodlums carrying dangerous weapon invaded the villages.

    In a statement, the Secretary to Anambra state government, Professor Solo Chukwulobelu, says the curfew which started on Monday, 26th April 2021, is expected to last between 7 pm and 6 am daily.

    Professor Chukwulobelu urged the people of Anambra state and other residents of the state living in the listed communities to obey the curfew order, as security personnel are on strict orders to enforce the curfew.

    Hoodlums machete nine to death in Anambra village

    No fewer than nine people were killed on Monday when hoodlums invaded Ukpomachi Village, Okuzu in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State.

    The state police command confirmed the deaths in a statement, adding that some other people were injured during the attack and property and livestock destroyed.

    The statement was signed by the command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga.

    The command said that identities of the deceased had yet to be known, adding that the incident was under investigation.

    It said that the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Monday Kuryas, had ordered immediate deployment of an operational and intelligence team to identify and apprehend the killers.

    It said that the killers were armed with machetes and other dangerous weapons.

    “A crack team of operatives of the command led by an assistant commissioner of police have visited the scene and conducted on-the-spot-assessment of the incidence.

    “Normalcy has been restored to the area and adequate security put in place to forestall a similar occurrence.

    “The assailants, said to be armed with machetes and other dangerous weapons, invaded the village in their numbers and attacked the residents, resulting in the death of nine persons whose identities are unknown,” it said.

    The police urged residents of Anambra, particularly those living in the community to be calm, assuring them of the command’s resolve to get to the root of the incident.

    It said that the residents should give to police, information that could lead to the arrest of the culprits.

    Seven policemen have been arrested and detained by the Anambra State command over an alleged N500,000 extortion.

    The money has equally been returned to the owner by the Police Commissioner Monday Kuryas, who pledged to prosecute the culprits after investigations.

    Their arrest followed a petition from a citizen of the state, TheNewsGuru gathered

    It was further learnt that the victim was an Onitsha based businessman.

    A source said the extortion was perpetrated in Onitsha.

    Police spokesman Ikenga Tochukwu confirmed that the arrest followed a petition by a citizen against some men of the Command.

    “The sum of N500,000 extorted from the victim was also recovered intact and returned to him and the officers charged with misconduct in line with extant disciplinary procedure of the Force,” Tochukwu said.

    Two officers killed in attack on Anambra police facility

    Two police officers have been killed in Anambra State, Nigeria’s South-east, in a deadly attack by gunmen on a police facility in the state.

    Some vehicles parked at the station’s premises were razed during the attack at the Zone 13 police headquarters at Ukpo, near Awka.

    The slain officers have been identified as Ishaku Aura, an inspector, and Uzoma Uwaebuka, a police constable.

    The commissioner of police and some senior police officers visited the scene of the attack, immediately after the incident.

    There has been a spate of attacks on police officers and police facilities, lately, in the South-east and South-south regions, which has compounded the security challenges in the two regions.

    The Anambra attack is coming a few days after governors and heads of security agencies in the five states in the South-east had a regional summit on security, where they agreed to establish a joint security outfit to check the insecurity in the region.

    IPOB, a pro-Biafra group, has been accused of being responsible for some of the attacks against the police in the South-east, but the group has denied any involvement.

    Suspected hoodlums have razed Zone 13 Police headquarters in Ukpo, Anambra state.

    TheNewsGuru gathered that no fewer than two policemen have died during the attack.

    Not less than four vehicles have also been burnt while fire fighters have arrived to put out the inferno.

    The development has increased tension across the State.

    On Sunday night, three persons were allegedly killed in Awka, Anambra State, including a fitness instructor

    The incident happened at Ifite, Awka South local government area, while the other person was killed at Unizik junction.

    The attack comes amid the increasing security incidents in Anambra whose governorship election scheduled for November 6 is fast approaching.

    Willie Obiano, the state governor, recently lamented over the worsening security situation, saying the state was under siege by criminals.

    “I call on everybody, irrespective of affiliations to come together and support government and security agencies to fight our common enemy. Those who seek to destroy what we have laboured to build must not be tolerated in any manner,” Obiano had said.

    Anambra governorship poll: APC schedules primary for June 26

    The All Progressives Congress(APC) says it will hold its primary election for Anambra governorship election on June 26.

    The party’s Director of Organisation, Prof. Al-Mustapha Medaner, disclosed this in a schedule of activities for the election released on Thursday in Abuja.

    Medaner said that the party would start the sales of expression of interest and nomination forms for the election at the party’s national secretariat from April 15 to June 8.

    He said that the exercise would be done in accordance with the provisions of the 2010 Electoral Act as amended and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) guidelines.

    He said that the last day for submission of completed forms and accompanying documents by aspirants would be June 8.

    According to Medaner, screening of aspirants would be on June 10.

    He added that publication of claims and objections would be on June 12 while
    screening appeals would be on June 15.

    He added that election appeal would hold on June 30.

    Medaner further said that the governorship expression of interest form would cost N2.5 million while the nomination form would cost N20 million totalling N22.5 million.

    He said that female and physically challenged aspirants would only pay 50 per cent of the prescribed fees for the position.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Anambra governorship election has been slated for Nov. 6 by INEC.

    Gunmen with Biafra flags attack Anambra bank

    Gunmen bearing Biafra flags in their hands on Friday stormed a bank in Anambra state, destroyed vehicles and attacked people in the bank’s vicinity.

    According to reports, there was, however, no money stolen, no person killed.

    The attack happened at Abagana, Njikoka local government area around 4pm on Thursday.

    The attack happened barely hours after Indigenous People of Biafra’s (IPOB) leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu raised the alarm over alleged DSS’ plan to attack banks in South East.

    He alleged the ploy was to hang the attacks on IPOB.

    The shooting in front of the old generation bank scared passersby, customers and staff who took to their heels.

    The gunmen, according to an eyewitness, drove in black Honda Pilot Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV).

    Confirming the incident, Anambra Police Public Relations Officer, Ikenga Tochukwu said the Command was on the trail of the hoodlums.

    According to him: “Those hoodlums were pursuing their target and when they could not get him, they started shooting sporadically in the air.

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed the death of a speeding driver and a female pedestrian at Obiuno Road in Igbo Ukwu community in Anambra.

    Igbo Ukwu is in the Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra.

    The FRSC Sector Commander in Anambra, Mr Andrew Kumapayi, confirmed the development in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka on Sunday, saying that the incident took place on Saturday.

    “Eye-witness report reaching us indicates that an unidentified driver of a Lexus car with registration number KSF403GD was on top speed and lost control of the vehicle.

    “He knocked down two woman crossing the road and crashed into a building by the side of the road.

    “Four people were involved in the crash – two male adults and two female adults.

    “The victims were taken to Apex Hospital in Igbo Ukwu by a good Samaritan before the arrival of FRSC rescue team from Igbo Ukwu Command.

    “The male passenger in the vehicle and one of the female pedestrians sustained injuries, while the driver and the other female pedestrian were confirmed dead by the doctor on duty.

    Their bodies had been deposited at the hospital’s mortuary,” Kumapayi said.

    While condoling with the families of the dead, he warned motorists against speed limit violations.

    The sector commander also advised pedestrians to be watchful when crossing or walking along highways to avoid untimely deaths.

    Anambra Salutes Prof Ben Nwabueze at 90

    The Anambra State Government has congratulated Africa’s foremost constitutional law scholar, Professor Ben Nwabueze, on the attainment of 90 years, describing him as a global treasure.

    In a message signed by Governor Willie Obiano, the Anambra State government said that Professor Nwabueze is “a genius well recognized at Harvard University and other key centres of learning around the world.

    “He is probably the world’s greatest constitutional law thinker alive at least in the English-speaking world”.

    Governor Obiano recalled how the Supreme Court of Nigeria decades ago officially proclaimed “Nwabueze the leading authority on constitutional issues throughout Africa.

    “The government and people of Anambra State are truly grateful that at 90 years Professor Nwabueze is not only alive but reasons most profoundly and writes so enchantingly and so lucidly and so logically. The flourish of his writing is matchless.

    “Just on February 27, 2019, Professor Nwabueze presented two new books at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, Victoria Island, Lagos”.

    Obiano extolled Nwabueze, a former Minister of Education, for authoring over 30 books and over 100 academic articles.

    Nwabueze, according to Governor Obiano, became one of the few persons in history to receive the PhD of the University of London, where he had earlier earned a bachelors’ degree in law with distinction, based on his globally influential publications.

    “He got this rare doctorate on the publication of his third book on the presidential system of government in Africa”, Obiano declared.

    The governor commended Nwabueze for his role as the founding Secretary General of Ohaneze Ndigbo, the pan Igbo organization.

    “Thanks to the heroic efforts of people like Nwabueze”, said the governor, “Ohaneze has been growing from strength to strength decades later”.

    He also praised Nwabueze, Nigeria’s first academic to be bestowed the honour of being made a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), for leading the Igbo Leaders of Thought group which on December 9, 2019, declared Governor Obiano the “Star of the East”, urging him to share the secret of his success with his brother Southeast governors”, after reviewing such legacy projects as Anambra International Cargo Airport and the 10,000-capacity International Conference Centre in Awka, the biggest in Africa.

    Chief Obiano recalled how the foremost lawyer has been working with various organizations and eminent Nigerians across the country to create a better society, including the late Chief Fredrick Rotimi Williams, Nigeria’s preeminent lawyer.

    “Not to be forgotten”, noted the governor “is Professor Nwabueze’s role in the constitutional development of a number of African countries, including Ethiopia which became a federation a few years ago as a result of the wisdom and sagacity of such people as this great Anambra indigene”.

    To mark Professor Nwabueze’s 90th birthday, Governor Obiano paid an undisclosed sum for Nwabueze’s new books to be sent to the state’s tertiary institutions.
