Woman stabs lover to death over abortion disagreement in Anambra

A 25-year-old woman, Onyinye Chime, reportedly killed her lover, Eleyi Azubuike, in Anambra State, for asking her to abort her pregnancy.

The incident happened on Ochiagha Street, Nkpor, near Onitsha, in the Idemili Local Government Area of the state.

According to reports, the deceased had advised Chime to abort the pregnancy, which she objected to.

A source told our newsmen that 29-year-old Azubuike also declined to give her money for upkeep.

“Onyinye was not comfortable with all these. So, she complained to people about it; but we didn’t know she would act this way. She went to the extreme,” the source added.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Haruna Mohammed, confirmed the incident.

He said, “There was a report of alleged murder of one Eleyi Azubuike, 29, of Ochiagha Street, Nkpor, in the Idemili North LGA of Anambra State by his girlfriend one Onyinye, 25, of same Ochiagha Street, Nkpor, inside his room.

“Police detectives attached to Ogidi division visited the scene and rushed the victim, who was found in a pool of blood, to Iyi Enu Mission Hospital, Ogidi, for medical attention, where he was certified dead by a medical doctor. The corpse was deposited at the hospital’s mortuary for an autopsy.

“A careful observation of the deceased’s body revealed stab wounds on his chest, while a bloodstained kitchen knife was recovered as an exhibit at the scene.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the deceased allegedly impregnated the suspect and wanted an abortion, which she declined and demanded some money for her upkeep, which the deceased refused to oblige.

“That eventually led to a scuffle which resulted in the man being stabbed to death.”

The PPRO said the case was under investigation to unravel other circumstances surrounding the incident.

  • Ngige to Obiano: Banish 12 suspended monarchs from Anambra

Ngige to Obiano: Banish 12 suspended monarchs from Anambra

Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, and the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC in Imo, Prof Emeka Ezeonu, on Saturday led a protest against alleged imposition of the traditional ruler of Alor, Igwe MacAnthony Okonkwo.

The Monarch of Alor is one of the traditional rulers recently suspended by Governor Willie Obiano for traveling to Abuja to visit President Muhammadu Buhari without permission.

According to a report by The Nation, over 500 indigenes of Alor in Idemili South Local government area took to the streets with placards bearing different inscriptions against alleged imposition of monarch and Caretaker Committee in the community by the State government.

Some of the placards read: ‘Alor rejects the imposition of caretaker, please, Governor Obiano look into this matter’; ‘this imposition has been on for eight years’ and ‘we dissociate our community from the monarch who traveled to Abuja without permission from our government” among others.

Ngige, a former Governor, who hails from the community, called Obiano to suspend the 12 traditional rulers and banish them from their different communities for desecrating the culture and traditions of their lands.

He said the banishment should be extended to the person who led them to the Abuja trip

Ngige alleged the traditional ruler was imposed by former Governor Peter Obi to punish his community and local government for voting against their allied forces in the 2011 senatorial election when he contested on the platform of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).

He said: “He decided to punish the towns thereby starving them of any projects and destabilise their town unions starting from Alor where he dissolved the executives with a caretaker hostile to Ngige and imposed the monarch on the community as against the Constitution of the people ”

“When someone is suspended from performing functions of an office, he should be barred from even being in that vicinity.

“So, I advise Anambra State Government to relocate these 12 traditional rulers from their Communities to avoid a situation likely to cause a breach of public peace.”

The Minister further alleged the Monarch of Alor was never enthroned but imposed on the people as a vendetta by the Obi administration for using what it called small Yoruba party ACN to defeat them.

The President General PG of Alor, Chief Uzoma Igbonwa, said the community would continue to support Governor Obiano’s administration, adding that Alor would never work against the State Government.

According to him: “We plead with the State Government to dissolve and disband the said caretaker Committee of Alor People’s Convention for working against the interest of Alor people and government of the State because their continued existence is an impediment to the peace and progress of Alor Community.”

Imo REC, Prof Emeka Ezeonu said the community would not rest until the State Government do the needful by banishing the monarch and dissolving the Caretaker Committee.

But the traditional ruler, Igwe MacAnthony Okonkwo, denied the allegation he was imposed by former Governor Obi.

He insisted he was the monarch of Alor.

After his one-year suspension by Obiano for allegedly going to Abuja without authorisation, he openly apologised for violating certain rules guiding the operation of monarchs in the state.

  • Anambra transporters groan over extortion, harassment

Anambra transporters groan over extortion, harassment

Commercial drivers in Anambra State have lamented over alleged extortion and harassment by unlawful revenue collectors.

They alleged extortion of fees from N7,500 to N2,300, and physical assault.

A tricycle operator, Uzochukwu Ifeatu, who plys Nkpor-main market, Onitsha, said: “The worst is that they fight us when we don’t have money to pay. You can see the injuries I sustained during one of such fights. Sometimes, our vehicles are damaged in the process”.

Bus driver Ejike Ibemezie said: “Each transporter plying different routes pays N7,500 to different groups in the morning; in the afternoon, they pay N850, while they pay N2,300 in the evening. The amount reduces on Sundays.

“If government wants money from us it should make the process more formal.”

Chairman of the Road Transport Employees Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) Kingsley Maduagwuna urged the government to deploy security agencies and task force officials.

He said: “Over the years, our association, which has the government’s backing, was sabotaged by hoodlums and our opponents, who were only interested in filling their pockets.

“Having cleared such obstacles on our way, and with the nod of government to operate, we shall use the instrumentality of RTEAN to boost the state revenue profile because the hoodlums, who should siphon money that should go to the state, are on the run…”

Commissioner for Transport Afam Mbanefo described the activities of thugs as worrisome to the government and people.

He promised that steps were being taken to rid the state of thugs.

  • Fresh Covid-19 cases spike in Anambra: a clarification

Fresh Covid-19 cases spike in Anambra: a clarification

Thanks, dear colleague, for the inquiries about the reported dramatic increase in the number of Covid-19 infections in the state which some people, relying on the latest figures from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) consider very high. A lot of people have innocently assumed that as many as 20 persons were infected in Anambra state in one day, fearing that the situation in the state is worsening rapidly.

The true situation is far from the impressions some have as a result of the figure. There is no dramatic increase in the number of COVID-19 infections in the state. The 20 cases reported by the NCDC yesterday were based on samples taken in over three weeks across the state. Some of the samples were even taken outside Anambra State, but were ascribed to our state because the people tested chose, for different reasons, to identify with the state. Only seven out of about 100 samples tested at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu Teaching Hospital, Awka, turned out positive. Therefore, the COVID-19 prognosis of our state is still good, one of the very best in the country.SAC

It is important to bear in mind that many of the 20 reported cases came from Nnamdi Azikiwe Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, which most unfortunately lost one of its key officers to reported complications arising out of COVID-19. His contacts in the medical college, teaching hospital, his private hospital, family and community have been traced comprehensively.

The relatively low positive results which Anambra State has been getting, despite the fact that a large number of our people travel extensively to all parts of the world for business and other legitimate pursuits and the fact that we have some of the largest open-air markets in West Africa patronized daily by millions of people from West Africa and beyond, show that many of our people have embraced our relentless message on COVID-19.

It is reassuring that the state has the capacity to manage cases should there be a spike. Apart from having teams of accomplished doctors, nurses, pharmacists, lab scientists, ward cleaners and ambulance who play vital roles in the COVID-19 case management value chain, tSACSAhere are 600 beds in different protective care units in our state, otherwise known as isolation centres. The facility at the Onitsha General Hospital, with 58 beds, is the first centre in Nigeria to meet World Health Organization (WHO) standards.

Still, we should not rest on our laurels. The disease, which is highly contagious, is far from over in our state. In fact, we expect a spike in infections soon. With the commissioning of the Mega Laboratory at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Awka, capable of testing 470 samples for COVID-19 simultaneously, there is likely to be a rise in the number of infections. What is more, with the aggressive community search just initiated by the Governor Willie Obiano administration which saw the government set up a COVID-19 Task Force in each of the 326 wards in the state so as to reach the grassroots in a radical manner, there is likely to be an increase in positive cases.

We, therefore, have a responsibility to continue to guide our people to imbibe the habit of wearing face masks any time they come out in public, and wear them appropriately by covering their nostrils and mouths always, as opposed to the current practice where people wear the face coving on the chin and jaw. We also need to encourage our people to wash their hands for at least 20 seconds with running water and soaps and sanitizers. In addition, we have to observe social distancing by keeping away from people by at least six feet.

The Anambra State government has recently started a campaign on ways to boost our immunity as part of the strategy to fight COVID-19. Our system needs plenty of vegetables like bitter leaf (onugbu) and pumpkin (ugu) and fruits like lemons, oranges, avocados, etc, which are available in large quantities throughout the state and beyond in the rainy season and now sell at affordable prices. Our system needs things like Vitamin C, Vitamin D and Zinc for fortification. They are affordable.

It is important to pass on this message to our people in different ways. Preventing the spread of the coronavirus pandemic is far better than managing the cases by experts who have, in spite of all odds, demonstrated inspiring confidence, dedication and competence. History will be kind to them.

Anambra State has in the last few years become exemplary in a lot of ways. The leadership has shown the light, and the people are finding the way. Each of us has to continue to make it remain the safest state in Nigeria.

Anambra Salutes Okigbo, Obi for Professional and Intellectual Excellence

The Anambra State government has congratulated two indigenes of the state on bringing international attention to Nigeria in the last three days for professional and academic excellence.

In a statement in Awka today, the government praised Mr Patrick Okigbo III, founder of Nextier, a consulting firm in Abuja, who has just been named one of the 12 professionals selected worldwide to serve for one year as Senior Fellows at John Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, and Dr Chidubem Obi, who has emerged the best overall student in Russia’s oldest and most prestigious medical school.

“The people and government of Anambra State felicitate with these worthy ambassadors and their families, as their prodigious achievements align with the vision of the state administration to make Anambra State and its people synonymous with international competitiveness and excellence”, the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, C. Don Adinuba, quoted Governor Willie Obiano as saying in a statement in Awka today.

By winning the 2020 Harvard senior fellowship, according the statement, Okigbo, a member of the Anambra State Vision 2070 set up to develop a strategic plan to make the state a fully developed place within 50 years like Taiwan and Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, “is clearly stepping into the shoes of transformational leaders like Lee Kuan Yew, who led Singapore’s legendary leapfrogging from the status of a typical Third World country in 1965 to a fully developed one in just 30 years”.

Okigbo hails from Ojoto in Idemili South Local Government Area, and hails from the same family as Dr Pius Okigbo, Africa’s most decorated economist; Christopher Okigbo, regarded by top literary scholars like Professor Michael JC Echeruo as the “most verbally exciting African poet writing in English; Professor Bede Okigbo, a globally renowned plant pathologist and geneticist who led the famous Biafran Army during the Nigerian Civil war; Chief Lawrence Okigbo, an internationally reputable forestry researcher and author; Professor Charles Okigbo, a leading mass communication researcher in the United States; as well as Professor Raphael Okigbo of Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, who was last year declared the cited Nigerian science scholar, according to Google Scholar.

Patrick Okigbo III attended the University of Nigeria at Nsukka, Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, in the United States and the London School of Economics.

“As for Dr Obi, who is from Ifitedunu in Dunukofia Local Government Area”, said Commissioner Adinuba, “we are delighted that he did not just emerge the best medical student in a university established since 1758, but also scored a grade point of 5.0, the first time an African has earned the highest point possible in the school.

“Truly, the Anambra brand of excellence in all ramifications is emerging faster than some people may realize”.

  • Four persons die on their way for burial in Anambra

The Anambra State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Andrew Kumapayi, on Saturday confirmed the death of four people in an accident involving a tipper and commercial bus along Ogidi-Abatete Road in Idemili North Local Government Area of the state.

Kumapayi confirmed the development in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Awka.

He said the tipper, loaded with sand, had a tyre burst, resulting in loss of control and subsequently rammed into the Mercedes Benz 608 bus conveying some passengers.

The commander told NAN that the accident occurred at about 5:15 pm on Friday.

He said: “The crash involved a Mercedes Benz 608 bus with registration number AA205DMA driven by one Christopher Ezeugwu and another Mercedes Benz tipper with number XD651 GDD, driver’s name given as F.C. Ugwumba.

“According to some eyewitnesses, the tipper had a tyre burst, resulting to loss of control and subsequently, rammed into the Mercedes Benz 608, conveying passengers who were going for burial.

“A total of 19 people were involved in the crash, comprising 17 adult males, one female adult and one female child.

“They were all rushed to Twinkle Hospital, Ogidi by members of the community.

Fidelity Bank Donates Covid-19 Isolation Centre to Anambra State

Consistent with its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) objectives, Fidelity Bank Plc has handed over a 50-bed capacity isolation centre at Ekwulobia General Hospital to the Anambra State Government.

Equipped with medical equipment and other state-of-the-art facilities, the bank on Saturday donated the isolation centre to assist the Willie Obiano-led administration in the fight against the dreaded Coronavirus (COVID-19).

Speaking at the handover ceremony on Saturday, Regional Bank Head (RBH), Awka, Fidelity Bank, Henry Asiegbu pointed out that the gesture was part of the bank’s CSR policy anchored on a commitment to enhancing the lives and wellbeing communities where the bank operates. “ The government and people of Anambra State have been very supportive of Fidelity Bank. It was therefore expedient that we rose to the occasion to fund this centre for the benefit of the people of Ndi-Anambra and Nigerias“ affirmed Asiegbu.

Since the outbreak of the Covid-19 in Nigeria, Asiegbu noted that the bank had remained in the forefront of galvanizing requisite resources to support governments’ response to the Coronavirus pandemic as exemplified by monetary donations to other State governments including Plateau State, Kebbi State, Benue State, Kano State, amongst others. “This is in spite of our contributions to the Private Sector Coalition Against COVID-19 (CACOVID)” he said.

  • Valentine Ozigbo: The Joshua That Will Take Anambra to The Promised Land

Valentine Ozigbo: The Joshua That Will Take Anambra to The Promised Land

If a man’s heart and (capabilities) were to be known by the construction of his face, then a lot of people would likely not reckon with Mr Valentine Ozigbo, immediate past President/Chief Executive Officer of the country’s humongous Transnational Corporation of Nigeria Plc (Transcorp).

But a closer look by the discerning would however reveal a deep thinker, an innovator and a man determined to change his environment.

Ozigbo easily takes after Peter Obi in looks. Many misjudged Obi upon his arrival to the Anambra scene about 18 years ago, given his “innocent” looks. What followed is however history as Obi went on to set many records, all positive.

Ozigbo has a rich history, transforming Nigeria’s foremost hotel, Transcorp Hilton Abuja into what it is today, and subsequently, moving on to Transcorp to completely transform Nigeria’s leading conglomerate. Before then, he had achieved a lot of incredible feats in his 17 years in banking. His accomplishments go even beyond this as he has led and continued to lead a number of innovative projects like freestyle football championship, where he is the biggest promoter in Africa, Unusual Praise and Unusual Entrepreneur, which he has been a key member of the leadership since 2018, among many.

Ozigbo’s trail blazing feats at Transcorp will however quickly disabuse the minds of doubters as to the sterner stuff he’s made of.

It was where he finally announced himself by transforming the outfit and making it one with the highest number of shareholders in Nigeria (close to 300, 000).

By so doing, he became one of the most decorated men in corporate Nigeria, with a trail of many awards across Africa, Europe and other continents.

Ozigbo’s feats and presence are not confined to national, continental and intercontinental levels. He has an equally appreciable impact at home in his native Amesi in Anambra State where it all began. A typical home boy, he’s always identified with his roots, impacting on widows, the less privileged and youths.

Hear him, “Everyone knows that when the grace of God started to shine on me mightily in my career progression, I never forgot Anambra,. I always came back to give back in my little ways. They know people who have benefitted from my leadership trainings, my youth empowerment schemes, my scholarship programmes, my support for widows, the Church, the community, my talent hunt competitions and carnivals, where I used to bring thousands of youths together.”

Ozigbo did those things out of his own volition, drawing from his awareness that the greatest investment is in people.

Ozigbo is a man who continually thinks outside the box, a man of ideas and innovation. Such has seen him sponsoring such talent hunt competitions like the Oja and Mbem; the Ogene and Mbejiriego Mmanwu Festival, as well as Unusual Praise.

He is also behind the Freestyle Football, an innovative brand of soccer targeted at the grassroots, which is beginning to make waves across the continent.

Ozigbo is also a man imbued with focus, vision and determination. Once he sets his sights on a goal, he pursues it with a single mindedness that ultimately yields the desired result.

One such example was his decision to leave his comfort zone at Transcorp to enter the gubernatorial race for the governorship of Anambra State. It was a decision that shocked many, given the unpredictability of Nigeria’s politics.

However, like he did at Transcorp, Ozigbo is equally determined to replicate it in politics for the benefit of his people.

He is doing so on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party.

Having already led the way by covering 17 out of the 21 local government areas of Anambra, even before the first whistle, Ozigbo is confident that if party primaries were to be held today, he would clinch his party’s sole ticket.

“If today primaries are held in Anambra, I will emerge the Candidate of the PDP, without even doing much yet. I think the people have the confidence that if there is anyone that will take them to the new reality, they will see such in me,” he says. Such typifies the kind of supreme confidence of born winners.

All he asks is for people who do not know him to hear his story from those who do.

There is nothing brash about Ozigbo. He is humble to a fault, unassuming, respectful, yet confident.

He also represents a new dawn and comes across as a breath of fresh air at a time Nigeria, nay, Anambra, needs such characters.

Hear him again: “I think the people have the confidence that if there is anyone that will take them to the new reality, they will see such in me.”

Ozigbo is under no illusions about the toughness of the battle ahead but he and his troops are preparing themselves to compete favourably with the best from any part of the world, not least in Anambra.

Having conquered the corporate world, Ozigbo is ready to conquer politics, beginning from his home state.

He will no doubt be telling himself and those around him that once a winner, he will always be a winner.

    Anambra, welcome your JOSHUA!
