The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has won all 21 chairmanship and councillorship seats in Anambra State.

The local government election, held on Saturday, September 28, was conducted by the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC).

The results were announced late Sunday in Awka by ANSIEC Chairman, Genevieve Osakwe.

Osakwe confirmed that APGA secured all 21 chairmanship positions, as well as all councillorship seats in the state’s 21 local government areas, as declared at the ward levels.

She described the election as the fairest, noting that the commission meticulously collated and analyzed the results to avoid any errors.

During the announcement, no opposition candidates, political parties, or their agents were present at the ANSIEC office where the election results were declared.

The ANSIEC chairman, who read out the total votes and names of the APGA candidates, declared them winners and returned elected, having received the highest number of votes.

Osakwe said: “This is to affirm the result of the chairmanship and councillorship election held on September 28, 2024. The commission carefully collated and analysed the results to ensure that there were no mistakes.

  • Anambra holds LG election after 11 years

Anambra holds LG election after 11 years

Anambra state will today elect their local government executives after 11 years.

The last local government election in the state took place in 2013 at the twilight of the administration of former Governor Peter Obi. Since then, successive administrations, particularly under Willie Obiano, opted to manage local councils through caretaker committees.

The incumbent Governor Charles Soludo also continued with this tradition since assuming office in 2022 until a recent Supreme Court decision outlawed the practice of running local governments with un-elected officials.

The governor recently announced that eight political parties would be participating in the election. However, Tony Nnalue, Commissioner for Information and Logistics at the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC), stated that he did not have a clear figure on the number of parties involved.

Soludo listed parties like the Action Alliance (AA), Labour Party (LP), New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP), but not all have candidates contesting across all the local government areas.

The announcement of September 28 as the date for the election had, however, sparked controversy among opposition parties, who argued that the timeline was too short to allow for adequate preparation, including primaries, sales of forms and campaigns. The ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in the state, however, dismissed these concerns, insisting that the preparation period was sufficient.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) and Labour Party (LP) expressed dissatisfaction with the election process, threatening to seek legal action.

Chief Basil Ejidike, APC’s state chairman, said his party would not participate in what he described as a “planned sham election,” citing poor planning and lack of transparency. He criticised recent amendments to state electoral laws, accusing ANSIEC, the state electoral body of favouring the APGA and failing to involve other political parties in the process.

APC’s state legal adviser, Chukwunonso Chiwuba, argued that the amended electoral laws passed in August 2024 were invalid since the election process had already commenced.

The Labour Party similarly refused to participate in the election. In a statement issued by the party’s publicity secretary, Theo Egbe, the LP described the local government election as “ill-conceived and contrived” under “obnoxious and illegal” electoral laws.

Labour Party affirmed its commitment to challenge the legitimacy of the election through legal channels, and warned its members against engaging with any unauthorised sale of nomination forms.

Other political parties under the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), however, expressed their willingness to participate in the election provided the ANSIEC extends the timeline and ensures a level-playing field.

At a meeting held in Awka, the IPAC called for more time to prepare, and requested a review of voter registration to include newly eligible voters.

In contrast, the APGA remains confident of winning the election. At a campaign rally, Governor Soludo declared that the party would win all the 21 local government chairmanship seats and 326 councillor positions. He dismissed the opposition parties as disorganised, saying the APGA had already secured four local government chairmanships unopposed.

” Their efforts and that of other critical stakeholders including members of the National and State Assemblies elected under the platform of our great party which resulted in the extended stakeholders meeting of the party on September 4, 2024 at the Government House, Umuahia to salvage the party from its impending disintegration was a right step in the right direction…”

The communique which was read by Comrade Jerry Nnubia, who is the Secretary of the State Transition Committee, “..heartily and joyfully congratulates the newly constituted 29 member National Caretaker Committee of the party under the chairmanship of Senator Esther Nenadi Usman…”

The chapter while commending the choice of membership of the Caretaker team, expressed its confidence in their ability to do a good job in repositioning the party to win more elections in future, especially at the presidential level for the greater good of all Nigerians that are presently suffering under the APC controlled Federal Government.

The party also vowed its full participation in the coming September 28, 2024 council poll in the state.

LP noted that there was an initial mixup with names of her candidates as published by the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission, but that it has been corrected accordingly when the party took it up with them.

They urged the public, including ANSIEC to jettison and ignore any contrary statement from whatever source.

Okoye who was flanked by other executive members in an interview with journalists shortly after the meeting pointed out that the party was anxiously looking up to the fast approaching 2025 governorship election in the state, and would use the Council poll as a test case of its popularity.

“We intend to take over the Anambra State Government House next year, and nothing will stop up..”, he added.

Hunters rescue more kidnap victims in Anambra

The Nigerian Hunters and Forest Security Service (NHFSS), on Monday, said that its operatives rescued a kidnap victim along Nri-Enugwu-Ukwu road between Anaocha and Njikoka Local Government Areas of Anambra.

This is contained in a statement by the Zonal Commander of NHFSS in the South East, ACG Mark Okonkwo, on Tuesday in Abuja.

Okonkwo said that the successful operation took place barely three weeks after the rescue of two siblings from kidnappers and recovered stolen vehicles around Nkwelle-Ezunaka axis of Oyi Local Government Area of the state.

He said that the hunters received a distress call at 2000 hours on Sunday from a passer-by, who saw some people forcing someone into a vehicle along the aforementioned route.

Okonkwo said he immediately mobilised his men for rescue mission and followed the direction from the Intel.

“On sighting us, the hoodlums began to shoot sporadically to stop them, but they gallantly surged on and the hoodlums swiftly sped off throwing their captive away from the vehicle.

“Our rapid response to the situation yielded positive results and we were able to rescue a woman, who was thrown out from the kidnappers’ speeding vehicle.

“We equally recovered a stolen vehicle at the scene,”he said.

Okonkwo said the hunters also recovered another vehicle allegedly stolen at gunpoint along Neni-Nimo road border between Anaocha and Njikoka council areas on August 25.

He said that phone numbers in the documents found inside the vehicle helped them to locate the owner of the vehicle, who eventually identified it as his car.

According to the owner, one Mr Christian Ozonyiama, a native of Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State, said his vehicle was snatched at gunpoint on that fateful day along Neni-Nimo road.

“The 61 year old, who resides at Nnewi, said he was going to Nnewi from Awka around 8p.m. on August 25, when some armed men disguised as vigilante operatives flagged his vehicle and another down along Neni-Nimo road.

“Ozonyiama said he initially mistook them for vigilantes as they blocked the road to search the missionary bus before him and freed it.

“He said it was when they bundled him out of his car and ordered him to sit on the ground that it dawned on him that they were not vigilante operatives, but kidnappers.

“They abandoned him on the deadly lonely Neni-Nimo road that fateful night and zoomed off with his Toyota HighLander Sport Utility Vehicle.”

Okonkwo appreciated the Deputy Commander-General (Technical Services), Dr John Metchie, for his unwavering support in ensuring that they carry out prompt rescue operations in Anambra and South East zone to curb criminalities.

He also extolled the Commander-General of NHFSS, Dr Joshua Osatimehin, for his leadership of the service by ensuring discipline, diligence, gallantry and rapid response to rescue missions across Nigeria.

  • How I managed Anambra security vote account under Obiano – Ex-banker

How I managed Anambra security vote account under Obiano – Ex-banker

A former commercial bank staff, Mr Ugochukwu Otubelu, on Wednesday, revealed how he managed the security vote account under ex-Gov. Willie Obiano of Anambra government.

Otubelu, who said he is now a businessman, told Justice Inyang Ekwo of a Federal High Court, Abuja that he was with the bank between Nov. 2, 2008 and March 24, 2023.

“I worked in Awka Regional Branch at Nmamdi Azikiwe University.

“I was a relationship officer, I recruit customers, manage their account and approves loan facilities for customers of the bank.

“The branch I worked is a regional branch and the Marketing Department is divided into Consumer Marketing, Commercial Banking and the Public Sector,” he said.

Otubelu, who was led in evidence by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)’s counsel Sylvanus Tahir, SAN, as 3rd prosecution witness (PW-3), said he worked in the Public Sector Department of the bank.

He said he was told by the bank’s compliant unit that the EFCC was investigating the state and the security vote accounts of Anambra which he managed.

He said the commission asked him to get details of six accounts including that of Youdoo Ventures, Nazdal Ventures, Moment of Peace Ventures and Easy Dia.ln Limited and C.I Party Ventures Nigeria Limited.

He said he had met with ex-Gov Obiano before in the course of managing the security vote account.

The PW-3, however said that the signatories to the security vote account were the former Principal Secretary to the ex-governor, Willy Nwokoye, and the Accountant, Theophilus Nweze.

“I interface with them mostly on daily and weekly basis in processing their transactions.

“I correlate between the bank and them and in processing their transactions, I give them feedback on those transactions.”

He said he goes to the principal secretary’s office every week and he tells him the transactions to be done for the week.

“He will give me instruments through cheque for the transaction to be processed on behalf of that security vote account.

“After every week, I do go to his office to balance the account via the money that came into the security vote account and what it is needed to be done for that week,” he said.

On how the transaction was done, Otubelu said Nwokoye sometimes issued cheques and they at times, took the cash to him.

He identified the documents submitted to the EFCC numbering 215 and was marked as exhibits after Tahir tendered them.

But Obiano’s counsel, Onyechi Ikpeazu, SAN, reserved his objection until final address in line with court directive.

Otubelu, who admitted that funds from the security votes account went into the six companies’ account, said the money did not go to the account holders.

When being cross-examined by Ikpeazu, the witness admitted that the state government was neither part of any of the six accounts nor did it open them.

He also said that the state government did not directly operate the six accounts.

He said the six accounts were used for discreet security transactions.

When asked on what he understood by the expression , “discreet security transactions,” Otubelu said; “As at the time the accounts were needed, there were a lot of insecurity in the state to the extent that we, the bank workers, do not go to work.

“There was high tension of insecurity all over the state.”

“AmI right to say that the security operatives did not operate regular bank accounts?” Ikpeazu asked.

Responding, the witness said: “In the course of my duty, the security agencies were basically paid in cash.”

The PW-3 admitted that on few occasions he took cash to the former governor, it was usually during his meeting with the security operatives.

“The service chiefs are always there; the army, the navy, the DSS director, civil defence, vigilante and others,” he said.

He admitted that the vigilante groups in the state were established by the communities and churches.

He, however, agreed that the state government participated in their funding and expenses as security operatives.

The witness admitted that in the course of operating the six companies’ accounts, no part of the state government money went to the benefit of the companies and their directors.

“Not even a kobo because the transactions done for the week will be reconciled with the Principal Secretary,” he said.

After re-examination, Otubelu was discharged from the witness box.

The EFCC also called Hayatu Hadejia, a Bureau De Change (BDC) operator as 4th prosecution witness (PW-4).

Hadejia told the court that he is a businessman, who runs BDC companies.

He said he had five companies and was invited by the EFCC as part of its investigations into the financial activities of the government of ex-governor Obiano.

After given his testimony and was cross-examined by Obiano’s lawyer, Justice Ekwo discharged him from the witness box and adjourned the matter until Oct. 7, Oct. 8, Oct. 9 and Oct. 10 for continuation of trial.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Obiano was Anambra governor between March 2014 and March 2022.

The former governor, in a nine-count charge, was alleged to have among others, misappropriated over N4 billion from the state’s treasury.

No resident will get up to N2,500 if we share Anambra’s revenue – Soludo

Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo has said that no resident will receive up to N2,500 if the state’s monthly revenues are to be shared.

Soludo said this while speaking at The Platform, a programme by Lagos-based church, Covenant Nation, to mark the 2024 Democracy Day on Wednesday, June 12.

He emphasised that he shares the pains of Nigerians in these difficult times.

He said: “As a person, for example, I deeply feel the pains of Nigerians at these challenging times especially the over 100 million Nigerians who are multidimensionally poor. Times are hard.”

“Sometimes, I just wish that I can give every resident of Anambra maybe a million naira each to ameliorate the hardship that we have, but the reality is that if we get our entire revenue in a month, both from FAAC and from our IGR and put it on the table, call all our estimated 8.5 million residents and share it, nobody will get up to N2,500.”

Soludo lamented that it is from the same money that can’t go around for N2,500 each that he will still have to pay salaries, gratuities, build roads, and invest in health and education among others.

…rescues APC with 351 State, Zonal, Wards offices

…insists on making APC very visible everywhere

This is certainly an interesting period for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra State, as one of its pillars and the immediate past National Auditor, Dr Paul Chukwuma has vowed to elevate the party far and above any other political party in Anambra State and the South East geopolitical zone.

Besides organizing of regular seminars and interractive meetings at all levels of party leadership, he’s revealed his commitment to giving the APC an overwhelming support base, financial backing, unrivalled motivation and confidence amidst political parties.

All these, the former National Auditor noted was to ensure that no other party Anambra State would stand before APC’s victory in the fast approaching 2025 governorship election.

According to him, “henceforth, never again will APC be lost in the crowd or relegated to the background in the state.

” I have now provided a new State office, Zonal offices and 326 Wards offices. I have also provided funds for regular monthly meetings for constant interactions among members.

“I insist that we all as APC members must be very proud of the party. We must have a distinct uniform that will always stand us out as APC members. We must wear it with pride, after all we are the national ruling party! he added.

Chukwuma, flanked by a Board of Trustee member of the party, Chief Ralph Okeke; Chief Basil Ejidike, the State Chairman; Chief Ifeanyi Ibezi, a former member of the Federal House of Representatives and other party top brass in the state also presented booklets for registration of members, ” ahead the proposed e-registration”, he stated.

To ensure that the APC stays far ahead of other political parties in the state, run in a purely different manner, with nothing short of winning the coming 2025 governorship election, Dr Chukwuma also announced his plans to organize regular seminars for the party leaders and select members all over the state.
