Angola: 22 killed in fuel price protests

No fewer than 22 people have died in protests against drastic fuel price hikes in Angola, the government confirmed on Wednesday.

Interior Minister Manuel Homem, said that nearly 200 people were injured.

The police spoke of clashes between demonstrators and security forces in several locations and said there was looting and damage to cars.

Since Monday, Angolans in the capital Luanda and other parts of the country have been protesting the higher prices, which the government raised by around 30 per cent at the beginning of July.

The government justified the price increase with the need to reduce the national debt. until now, fuel has been heavily subsidised in the oil-rich country.

More than 1,200 demonstrators have been detained in the past three days, said police spokesman Mateus de Lemos.

Although the country of 37 million inhabitants in South-West Africa is one of the continent’s most important oil producers, the new fuel prices are high compared to the average income of Angolans.

A litre of diesel now costs 400 kwanza (0.54 dollars), while around half of all Angolans have to get by on less than 3.61 dollars a day, according to World Bank statistics.

AFCON 2023: Why we lost to Super Eagles – Angola Coach, Pedro Goncalves

Pedro Goncalves, the Palancras Negras of Angola  coach has stated reasons why his side lost 1-0 to the Super Eagles of Nigeria on Friday night, at the Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny.

Ademola Lookman scored in the dying minutes of the first half of the quarter-final encounter and it proved to be the only goal of the match.

Speaking at his post-match interview after the game, Goncalves blamed his side’s loss for fatigue, as they had to play in three cities, unlike Nigeria, who have been camped in Abidjan throughout the tournament.

The Portuguese also said that most Nigerian players play in high-level competitions in Europe, while most of his own players play in the Angolan domestic league, adding that they lack experience.

“It is true that we played against a very strong opponent. But the Nigerian players were fresher than ours, and their physical display made them able to create more chances than us,” Goncalves said.

“Most of their players take part in very high-level competitions, and they have never gone out of Abidjan. But we’ve gone to three different cities in the course of this tournament, so this triggered fatigue for my players.

“Also, most of my players play in the home league, and some of them aren’t experienced playing in big competitions like the AFCON.”

AFCON 2023: Angola’s match will be tougher – Coach Peseiro

Coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Jose Peseiro, has said he and his boys are aware that the quarter final match against Angola will be tougher than the Cameroon game.

Peseiro said this while reacting to the 2-0 round of 16 win over the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon at the Félix Houphouët-Boigny Stadium, Abidjan, in the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire.

Even though the Portuguese commended his players for the 2-0 win over Cameroon, he said the boys have been given a two-day off before work resumes again for the all important quarter final clash with Angola.

“I think my players know that. We are playing with a fantastic spirit now but we must be focused on the target and train more before the next match,” Peseiro said.

Reflecting on individual performances of his players, Peseiro said Victor Osimhen did not score on Saturday but had a fantastic game, saying it is very difficult to stop the Napoli FC of Italy striker.

“He (Osimhen) is a fantastic player for our team, we have very good players, he will win the ball, hold play until our players arrive,” Peseiro said.

The Portuguese, however, revealed that it has not been easy for him to select his 11 players in every game.

Ademola Lookman’s goals in the 35th and 90th minutes were all Nigeria needed to set a date with Angola in the quarter final on Friday, Feb. 2 at the Félix Houphouët-Boigny Stadium, Abidjan beginning at 9:00 p.m Nigerian time.

AFCON 2023: How Angola set up quarter final clash against Nigeria

Gelson Dala scored twice to ensure Angola reached the quarter-finals of the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Angola held a comprehensive 3-0 last-16 victory over neighbours Namibia on Saturday in Bouake.

Angola, who claimed their biggest-ever Cup of Nations finals win with the result, left Namibia rueing four mad first half minutes on their part.

Angola had an early setback when goalkeeper Neblu received a red card and they were under pressure from a Namibia side that looked the most likely to find the net.

But the game turned when Gelson opened the scoring after 38 minutes.

Namibia defender Lubeni Haukongo then received a red card shortly afterwards and the Angola forward completed his double from the resulting free-kick.

Angola added a third goal through Mabululu in the second period and now face a quarter-final tie against Nigeria on Friday.

Nigeria were 2-0 winners of their last-16 tie against Cameroon which was played later on Saturday.

Namibia made their debut in the Cup of Nations knockout rounds but could not profit from an early piece of good fortune.

Angola were reduced to 10 men after 17 minutes when Neblu handled the ball outside the box as he stopped Bethuel Muzeu’s chipped shot.

It was poor play all round by the team as defender Kialonda Gaspar was caught in possession by Muzeu, who had a clear run on goal and forced the error from the goalkeeper.

Deon Hotto’s resulting free-kick from the edge of the area was superbly saved by replacement goalkeeper Antonio Dominique.

In spite of their numerical disadvantage, Angola took the lead with a superbly constructed goal.

Fredy was played into space on the right-hand side of the penalty box and his low cross provided a tap-in for Gelson.

Two minutes later and it was 10 players each as Namibia defender Haukongo received a needless second yellow card and was sent off.

From the resulting free-kick, the same two players combined for Angola’s second goal.

Fredy delivered the set-piece and Gelson headed home for his fourth goal of the tournament.

Peter Shalulile fired over early in the second half as Namibia tried to reduce the deficit but it was Angola who scored the next goal.

Mabululu burst into the box after a quick counter-attack and curled a fine finish in at the far post to kill the contest.

They fought hard to beat Angola girls with five points difference in the first match 12-7.

They continued with the winning spirit in the second half to defeat the Angolans with a final score 28-24.

In the final match, defending champion, Egypt retained their title as they comfortably hammered their counterparts, Guinea 29-16 to be crowned champion of the 2023 Africa Women’s Youth Handball Championship.

AfroCan: D’Tigers suffer first defeat, lose to Angola 57-48

Host Angola advanced to the Quarter-final stage of the Adfrocan tournament after defeating Nigeria 57-48 on Monday in Luanda at the AfroCan tournament.

The host turned the ball over 30 times, but Nigeria could only score 19 points off Angola’s sloppy plays.

While the Angolans remain undefeated (2-0), Nigeria dropped to 1-1 in Group C.

Kanyisola Odufuwa opened the score with a two-point play that gave Nigeria their only lead of the game before Glofate Buiamba hit a three-point that put Angola in front and they never trailed again.

At some point, Angola led by as many as 22 points.

D’Tigers led Angola 15 8 in the last quarter but the damage has already been done in the first three quarters of the game.

Although Buiamba – the only Angola to score in double figures – finished with 13 points, Wilson Cassav came off the bench to change the dynamic of the game for Angola, finishing with eight points and eight rebounds in 19 minutes.

Cassav was 4 for 4 from the field, although he missed his two free-throw attempts.

Angola coach Anibal Moreira chose to praise his players’ effort rather than single out one player: “I am glad we came up with the win even though we had 30 turnovers,” said the former Olympian point guard.

  • Crude oil production: Angola, Libya maintain lead over Nigeria

Crude oil production: Angola, Libya maintain lead over Nigeria

Angola and Libya have for the second consecutive month maintained their lead over Nigeria as Africa’s highest crude oil producers, according to a report by the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

OPEC made this known in its Oil Market Report for October. According to the report, Nigeria’s crude oil production in September averaged 1.087 million barrels per day.

The report said the figure showed an increase of about 30,000mb/d when compared to the 1.057mb/d produced averagely in August.

However, like the preceding month, the report said Angola remained Africa’s highest crude oil producer for the month under review with an average production of 1.184mb/d.

It said Libya’s crude oil production also averaged 1.152mb/d in September.

“According to secondary sources, total OPEC-13 crude oil production averaged 29.77 mb/d in September, higher by 146,000 barrels per day month-on-month.

“Crude oil output increased mainly in Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Libya and the UAE, while production in Iraq, Venezuela and IR Iran declined,” the report said.

The report said the latest data suggested that inflation accelerated to 20.5 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y) in August from 19.6 per cent y-oy in July.

It said the recent rate had been fuelled by domestic and international constraints on supply chains, a weakening naira as well as higher energy and transportation prices.

“Moreover, floods in the northern part of the country, which have weighed significantly on the grain harvest, could lead to even higher prices.

“However, considering the broad money-supply growth of 21 per cent y-o-y in August, there is a significant monetary component behind the inflationary spiral.

“In response, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) recently hiked the policy rate for the third time this year by 150 basis points, to 15.5 per cent, adding up to a cumulative 400 bps.

“The CBN also increased the minimum Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) by 500 bps, to 32.5 per cent, from 27.5 per cent previously, but kept the liquidity ratio unchanged at 30 per cent.

“For the time being, the Stanbic IBTC Bank Nigeria Purchasing Manger’s Index increased to 53.7 in September 2022 from 52.3 in the previous month,” the report said.

It said this was a reflection of a stable improvement in overall business conditions as sentiment remained positive, supported by the outlook for the fossil fuel market.

  • 131-carat diamond unearthed in Angola

    131-carat diamond unearthed in Angola

A 131-carat white Type IIa diamond was uncovered from the Lulo mine, a 3,000 square km concession in Angola’s Lunda Norte diamond heartland.

The country’s state-owned diamond company Endiama announced this on Wednesday.

The diamond was found by Australia-based Lucapa Diamond Company, and its partners in Lulo’s Block 19, 11 days after a 160-carat diamond was extracted from the same mine.

According to the company, this makes it the fourth diamond of over 100 carats to be discovered from the mine this year and the 29th overall, the company said.

The diamond located approximately 630 km east of the capital city Luanda, Lulo is the world’s 4th largest diamond mine.

It is a joint venture, Lucapa Diamond Company owns 40 per cent, Endiama has 32 per cent and the private Angolan company Rosas & Petalas owns 28 per cent.

The past decade’s exploration had proved that Lulo remained one of the world’s most prolific alluvial diamond fields.

In 2016, a 404.2-carat diamond extracted from Lulo, the biggest diamond so far found in Angola, was sold for 16 million U.S. dollars, or 39,580 dollars per carat, a record price for a white diamond.

The diamond’s profit reached 34 million dollars after being cut and transformed into jewellery, according to Endiama.

The Angolan Minister of Mineral Resources, Petroleum and Gas, Diamantino Azevedo, said Angola had once again shown its “enormous’’ diamond potential.

“I am absolutely convinced that with discoveries of this nature we will be, in the near future, among the biggest diamond producers in the world,’’ the minister said.

Nigeria overtaken by Libya, Angola in oil production – OPEC

The Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has noted that two  oil-producing African countries Angola and Libya have overtaken Nigeria in oil production. Nigeria’s oil capacity has drastically dropped to 972,000 barrels per day in August 2022.

This revelation was made known by OPEC in its September 2022 report, confirming the figures released by Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission.

Nigeria’s crude oil production slumped below one million barrels per day in August 2022, the lowest ever in several years.

A survey in the Upstream Petroleum sector shows that the country’s oil production dropped below one million barrels per day to 972,394 bpd, the lowest in many years.

It stated that figures from the NUPRC indicated that the country’s oil production dropped from 1,083,899 bpd in July to 972,394 bpd in August.

Confirming this in its September 2022 oil sector report released on Tuesday, OPEC stated that the drop in Nigeria’s oil production made Angola and Libya to overtake Nigeria in oil output.

The report stated that Angola was Africa’s highest crude oil producer for the month under review with an average production of 1.187mb/d.

It said Libya’s crude oil production averaged also 1.123mb/d for August.

“According to secondary sources, total OPEC-13 crude oil production averaged 29.65 mb/d in August, higher by 618,000 month-on-month,” it stated.

The report further revealed that production of oil in Angola, Saudi Arabia increased in the month in review whilst production in Nigeria has drastically reduced due to some factors in the country.
