PHOTOS: Igbinedion University, Okada 10th year entrepreneurship exhibition

Igbinedion University Okada last week Wednesday exhibited a range of products produced by its students in commemoration of its 10th year exhibition anniversary.

The exhibition which showcased fashion design, IT acquisition skills, shoe making, HITECH, catering, textile designs, chemicals and various products was a sight to behold.

IUO Vice Chancellor, Prof Lawrence Ikechukwu Ezemonye while addressing the various groups that participated said the programme is designed to flush out unemployment, unemployability and underemployment from the university’s system.

“Yes, every year reflects new trajection and that is because of the availability of knowledge in the ensuing years. What we knew yesterday is not the same thing as what we know today.

You will see that in the recent past, thought were more on the analogue entrepreneurial thinking but today the entrepreneurial thinking is more digitalized, it is ICT driven. InfoTech and HiTech are the real technological prowess that are driving entrepreneurship.

So what we have seen today is a reflection of the revolution that we are on now, the digital revolution and that is what we have seen today.

So this year’s product exhibition is really HiTech and it has been embellished so much now with the new hub that you saw, the digital hub that is the hub for innovation and creativity; so it shows a significant difference to what used to happen in the past.

But that is going with the time, the university moves with the time. The university does not stand still while the stock market sleeps, the university must grow because it is a global market that we are all shopping from, so for you to remain globally competitive, it must go with the time.

And that is why this university has a mantra of smart campuses and that is what you see today and we are happy that we are beginning to have a reflection of those thoughts, we are very happy.

A former Secretary to the Delta State Government (SSG), Comrade Ovuozourie Macaulay has rejoiced with Abe 1, Ovie of Uvwie Kingdom, Dr. Emmanuel Ekemejewan Sideso, on his 79th birth anniversary.

In a goodwill message issued in Asaba to mark the anniversary, Macaulay extoled the Royal Majesty’s virtues especially since his enthronement in the past decade and half.

In particular, he said that the royal father has been an architect of peace whose reign has institutionalised peace, concord and rapport which in turn has engendered growth and development not just in Uvwie but also in that axis of the State.

“It is evident and obvious that your reign has ushered in tremendous cohesion and peace as well as promoted inter-ethnic cordiality in the State.

“For us at the Warri, Uvwie and Environs Development Agency (WUEDA), you have been an enabler of the peaceful atmosphere that made it possible for us to operate successfully in your kingdom.

“The turbulence of the past has gradually faded away; it shows a trajectory of decent, disciplined, honest and just traditional leadership that you have put in place. Certainly, you are an epitome of royalty.”

Macaulay prayed to God to grant the Royal Majesty divine health, peace and serenity as well as many more fruitful years on the throne for the benefit of the kingdom, the State, Nigeria and humanity in general.

C&F Porter Novelli repositions, kickstarts academy on 25th anniversary

Leading strategic communication firm C&F Porter Novelli on Thursday 1 December, 2022, unveiled its Academy for Business Communication (ABC) for West Africa. Driven by its “Public Relations for Good” mantra, the academy aims to train 25, 000 undergraduates in business communication facets ranging from business strategy, writing, ethics, and leadership. Others include financial literacy, team spirit, as well as research and planning.

In a media briefing on its silver jubilee anniversary, Mr. Tony Ajero, the firm’s managing director and chief executive, explained that the Academy is one of the ways the company is giving back to society after 25 years of privileged service to leading brands across virtually all sectors both nationally and internationally.

“The Academy for Business Communication is borne of two factors. First is the societal challenge arising from the falling education quality which results in less and less equipped graduates. Second is our corporate culture which is built on providing total marketing communications solutions. Hence, we deem it apt to contribute solutions rather than moan about the situation.” Mr. Ajero said the training which will be delivered online is in partnership with senior academia and professionals from its sister companies in the Integrated Marketing Communication (IMC) group. Furthermore, the best students will then be mentored into and across their careers so they can do the same for succeeding generations.

“C&F has, over the years, been acknowledged as a “University of Public Relations” because its alumni are found across industries in Nigeria and abroad. Additionally, we are a knowledge-driven organisation with year-round robust internship opportunities and the annual Public Relations Fundamentals programme which has produced Management Trainees since 2011,” Mr. Ajero added.

Originally known as Corporate and Financial when it started business in 1997, it took on its current name in 2007 after becoming an affiliate partner of the 60 country-wide Porter Novelli global network. The agency’s brand footprints across Nigeria and West Africa include major campaigns such as managing the passage of the bill to demutualize the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) into the NGX; supporting the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRC) in gaining stakeholder contribution to the draft of the Nigerian Code of Corporate Governance; and flotation marketing support for the Skyway Aviation Handling Company PLC Initial Public Offer.

It also ushered in the top telecommunication brands: MTN and Etisalat; managed the protracted Trovan clinical trials crisis for Pfizer; and the joint efforts of the Federal Government, and the United Kingdom (UK) Department for International Development (DfID-UK) in securing passage of critical financial reform bills, as well as supported the Stanbic-IBTC merger which was Nigeria’s first tender offer.

C&F has also executed brand repositioning and perception campaigns for such major consumer brands as Coca-Cola, Maggi, Pampers, Guinness Foreign Extra Stout, Malta Guinness and Oral B, among others.

Happy 10th anniversary to Marriage & Family column – By Francis Ewherido

    By Francis Ewherido

My first article on this column was published in Saturday Vanguard of Nov. 17, 2013. That was 10 years ago. I say happy 10th anniversary to the Marriage and Family Column. The list of those who made this column possible and have helped to sustain it is long. I have an overwhelming urge to mention all the names, but I refrain for fear of missing out names of some vital people in the project. My eternal gratitude to you all. But let me make one exception of mentioning Mr. Mideno Bayagbon, the Publisher of the Newsguru. He was the editor of Vanguard when the column debuted and in fact approved it. I also thank all the readers without whom the column will be superfluous. I get messages from as far as Australia. When I was about to start, my elder brother Fr. Tony liked the five sample articles I sent to him for review, but he wondered if I could sustain the column over time. I had fears too, but 10 years after, the column is still very much alive.

The first article was titled WHAT DOES MARRIAGE MEAN TO YOU? In the article I adopted the definition of marriage that resounded with  me: “the matrimonial covenant, by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of the whole life, which is ordered by its nature towards the good of spouses and the procreation and education of offspring…” (Wikipedia). Ten years on, my perception of marriage has not changed. I just want to add one word in the definition, “Covenant:” a binding agreement between spouses going into the marriage. Every marriage goes through testing times, times when you feel it is not worth it or when you feel you should just walk away. But the covenantal aspect of marriage helps to bring you back to your senses and gives you the impetus to carry on.

The above definition captures the essence of marriage, but the rate at which young marriages are collapsing is making me to wonder if intending couples should not ponder and answer this question, “what does marriage mean to you?” before going ahead. That way, both parties’ understanding of marriage will be clear and rhyme. The marriages of at least three couples with whom we are familiar have crumbled in the last couple of few weeks. The usual refrain after the announcement is for their privacy to be respected. This column is meant to promote the marriage institution, not breakups. I have no interest in promoting marriages that failed. I do not even have interest in mentioning your names. Young marriages fail everywhere.

The family is the bedrock of any society. The best way to destroy a society is to destroy the family unit. So my interest is how to promote the marriage institution and by extension the family unit and reduce the number of failed marriages.

For me, the main reason why young marriages fail is lack of proper courtship. “Courtship is that traditional period before engagement and marriage when couples date to get to know each other and decide if they should go ahead with the relationship.” Another definition I love so much is “a relationship between a man and a woman in which they seek to determine if it is God’s will for them to marry each other. In the first definition knowing each other means knowing your core values (character), your assets and liabilities (areas where are good and areas where you have drawbacks); it means friendship (soul mates and a strong bond. It means if you take sex out of the courtship, you will continue to flow together). The truth of the matter remains that sex during courtship blurs the vision of the courting couple. They gloss over fundamental issues to which they should pay attention.

Latitude of acceptance (both parties must know what is acceptable and what is taboo to each other and stay within boundaries). You should know each other’s family. Courtship is not a hide and seek affair. You must know each other’s family as much as possible. For instance, if you visit your fiancée and you notice your mother-in-law to be is bossing her husband around, you should ask yourself if that will not be your fate later? What does your fiancée think about it? If her mother’s behaviour sits well with her, you risk marrying a woman who will boss you around. The question is, are you ready to take that until you die? If yes, no problem, but if not, you need to reevaluate the relationship.

Also, if your fiancé’s father maltreats his mother and he sees nothing wrong with it, maltreatment might be your portion if you go ahead to marry him. You need to evaluate the relationship.

Beyond knowing each other’s family, I will get involved in my children’s courtship. I have no intention of intruding in their privacy, but I intend to interact with my potential sons-in-law and daughters-in-law. From my experience, I can get a trailer-load of information to advise my children. They will take the decision, but I will be an adviser. I also intend to pursue the age-old tradition of knowing the family of your potential in-law. You might see things that your son/daughter’s immature eyes did not or cannot see.

All these measures and many more are just to increase the chances of the success of your marriage. Even if you have information that can fill a book of 1,000 pages, there are still no guarantees. Changes occur after marriage and as the marriage goes on. Some of these changes are fortuitous while others are caused by situations or outright mischief.

Pregnancy, for instance, can bring about changes. Some women suffer from morning sickness. They vomit frequently and spit per second. If you are a man who loves kissing your wife regularly to show love, that can become a challenge. Some pregnant women switch off sex. It can be challenging for some husbands. My advice is, adjust and learn to deal with it. Even animals control their urges. Going outside to satisfy your urge is insensitive and selfish. It should not be an option. You are responsible for her situation and she’s carrying your baby. Unsatisfied sexual urge does not kill. It is only momentary. To be continued.

    PARADED WIDOW

Last week, I wrote about the widow, who was paraded naked in Agunese Afam-Mmaku Community in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu. According to GWG.NG, the victim, named Anthonia Okonkwo, narrated how she was brutalised for an offence that she did not commit. She alleged that the people who spearheaded the attack are: “Sunday, Jonathan, Obi, Chigazu and Okechukwu… Others are Chukwudike Anikene, Chukwuebuka Agu, one Maduabuchi and his father as well as a girl who videotaped her during the attack.” The report said seven people have been arrested. The matter should be thoroughly investigated and those found guilty should be punished to serve as a deterrent to others, who carry out such abominable acts. I commend Prof. Joy Ezeilo and her team who visited the widow. I urge her and her team to follow up this matter until justice is done. Creating a just society is everyone’s task.

  • NCRIB 60th Anniversary: Why it is difficult for most people to make right choice on insurance purchase

NCRIB 60th Anniversary: Why it is difficult for most people to make right choice on insurance purchase

Chairman Heirs Holdings, Tony Elumelu has adduced reasons why most Nigerians find it difficult to make right choice on insurance purchase.

Elumelu disclosed this in his Chairman’s Keynote Remarks for the Nigerian Council of Registered Insurance Brokers (NCRIB) 60th Anniversary.

The theme of the anniversary is ’60 Years of Insurance Broking: Redefining the Practice and the Practitioners’.

He explained that: ” Through insurance, large volumes of fund are mobilised by way of premiums for investments, spurring the growth and development of the economy.

“With insurance, families receive financial security, assets are protected against hazards, and businesses continue to run with the assurance of financial compensation in the event of a loss.

“In a nutshell, insurance keeps families and their possessions intact, provides financial safeguards for businesses, creates employment, and generally advances the economy.

“An economy is therefore as advanced as its insurance sector.

“More importantly, in an economy going through inflation and a widening poverty gap, insurance is more important now than ever.

“That is why we decided to introduce smart, simple insurance to the Nigerian market to better service this underserved market.

    NCRIB’s Contributions

“As insurance is very important to the economy, so also is the quality of governance, institutions, and practitioners of the sector

“Insurance is recognised as a technical business that requires special expertise.

“This therefore makes it difficult for most people to make the right choice on insurance purchase. They also require professional assistance when claims occur.

“This is why the expertise of an insurance broker is crucial.

“The insurance broker is an intermediary between the insurance consumer and an insurance company.

“The insurance broker is a professional. He represents the interests of insurance consumers and provides them with expert advice, guidance, and support on insurance matters.

“The Nigerian Council of Registered Insurance Brokers (NRIB) serves as a central organisation for the regulation of all practicing insurance brokers in Nigeria.

“Members of NCRIB have, over the years, facilitated insurance businesses in hundreds of billions of naira, delighted millions of Nigerians with their professional insurance services, and ensured that claims are duly settled.

Redefining the Practice and the Practitioners:

“Notwithstanding the great achievements so far recorded, NCRIB still has a lot to offer to its members and the Nigerian insurance industry as a whole.

“There is always room for improvement
We must strive to achieve the highest levels of professionalism and dedication to delivering excellent service to the public who rely on us to provide them with comfort

In the area of Governance :

“We as an industry need to enforce strict adherence to corporate governance by all NCRIB members.

“The need for the body to weed out non-registered and non-compliant members from its fold.

“These are the ones tarnishing the image of the broking profession and the industry at large.

“An insurance broker must be professional at all times.

“In redefining the practice and practitioners in the broking profession, NCRIB should lead the war against many of the unethical practices that have been the bane of the industry for years.

“These include premium rate cutting, delayed premium remittance, unremitted premium, overloading of premium, returned premium, fake documents, fraudulent claims, collusion to defraud, mis-selling, unhealthy competition, misrepresentations, manipulation of policy conditions, self-enrichment methods disguised as marketing expenses, and many more.

“While NAICOM continues to play its role as the industry regulator, NCRIB as a body must ensure that appropriate sanctions are imposed on any of its members found using unethical practices

We must push for more Industry Collaboration:

“The NCRIB and other insurance industry bodies should collaborate more to deepen insurance penetration in Nigeria.

“Where there are differences on issues, such must be resolved as friends and colleagues to protect and preserve the image of the industry.

“The body should also play a key role in government advocacy for pro-insurance laws and policies.

    REMARKS

    Good morning All,

Our Chief Host, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Executive Governor of Lagos State

The Chairman of the Occasion, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu SAN, Executive Governor of Ondo State

The Commissioner for Insurance, Mr. Sunday Thomas
The President & Chairman of the Governing Board of the Nigerian Council of Registered Insurance Brokers, Mr. Rotimi Edu
    Insurance practitioners present here today
And all distinguished guests present here

    Members of the media

Let me start by congratulating the Nigerian Council of Registered Insurance Brokers on its 60th Anniversary

And for organising this most befitting event to mark the milestone

I stand before you today as the Chairman of Heirs Holdings, my family-owned investment management company with investments in the strategic sectors of the African economy, including financial services, hospitality, power, energy, technology, and healthcare.

You may know me more for my banking career as the Chairman of the United Bank for Africa (UBA) Africa’s global bank present in 20 African countries including France, USA, UK, and the UAE

And the catalytic work we do at the Tony Elumelu Foundation in empowering young Africans across the 54 countries on the continent

So far, over 15,000 young African entrepreneurs have benefitted directly from the Foundation through the provision of a $5,000 non-refundable seed capital, alongside business training, mentorship, and market access to these young African entrepreneurs.

At the Heirs Holdings Group we are committed to improving lives and transforming the continent

This is why last year we entered the insurance sector with the introduction of Heirs Life Assurance and Heirs Insurance Limited

Insurance companies committed to providing simpler and smarter insurance to the market

These 2 companies complement Heirs Insurance Brokers (HIB), our insurance brokerage business and these 3 companies allow us to exploit synergies and efficiently service the Nigerian insurance market

Why have we focused on the Insurance sector?

    The importance of insurance

We all understand the pivotal role Insurance plays in any society.

It provides the much-needed safety and security.

Through insurance, large volumes of fund are mobilised by way of premiums for investments, spurring the growth and development of the economy.

With insurance, families receive financial security, assets are protected against hazards, and businesses continue to run with the assurance of financial compensation in the event of a loss.

In a nutshell, insurance keeps families and their possessions intact, provides financial safeguards for businesses, creates employment, and generally advances the economy.

An economy is therefore as advanced as its insurance sector.

More importantly, in an economy going through inflation and a widening poverty gap, insurance is more important now than ever.

That is why we decided to introduce smart, simple insurance to the Nigerian market to better service this underserved market

    NCRIB’s Contributions

As insurance is very important to the economy, so also is the quality of governance, institutions, and practitioners of the sector

Insurance is recognised as a technical business that requires special expertise.

This therefore makes it difficult for most people to make the right choice on insurance purchase. They also require professional assistance when claims occur.

This is why the expertise of an insurance broker is crucial.

The insurance broker is an intermediary between the insurance consumer and an insurance company.

The insurance broker is a professional. He represents the interests of insurance consumers and provides them with expert advice, guidance, and support on insurance matters.

The Nigerian Council of Registered Insurance Brokers (NRIB) serves as a central organisation for the regulation of all practicing insurance brokers in Nigeria.

There is always room for improvement
We must strive to achieve the highest levels of professionalism and dedication to delivering excellent service to the public who rely on us to provide them with comfort

    In the area of Governance

We as an industry need to enforce strict adherence to corporate governance by all NCRIB members.

The need for the body to weed out non-registered and non-compliant members from its fold.

These are the ones tarnishing the image of the broking profession and the industry at large.

An insurance broker must be professional at all times.

In redefining the practice and practitioners in the broking profession, NCRIB should lead the war against many of the unethical practices that have been the bane of the industry for years.

These include premium rate cutting, delayed premium remittance, unremitted premium, overloading of premium, returned premium, fake documents, fraudulent claims, collusion to defraud, mis-selling, unhealthy competition, misrepresentations, manipulation of policy conditions, self-enrichment methods disguised as marketing expenses, and many more.

While NAICOM continues to play its role as the industry regulator, NCRIB as a body must ensure that appropriate sanctions are imposed on any of its members found using unethical practices

We must push for more Industry Collaboration

The NCRIB and other insurance industry bodies should collaborate more to deepen insurance penetration in Nigeria.

Where there are differences on issues, such must be resolved as friends and colleagues to protect and preserve the image of the industry.

The body should also play a key role in government advocacy for pro-insurance laws and policies.

    Innovation

The insurance industry can benefit from innovation across all phases of the service. For this to happen, there is the need to reward and incentivise innovation across the industry.

The industry must also benchmark against global trends.

Perhaps the starting point for innovation in the broking arm of the industry is retail insurance development.

Over the years, brokers in the market have been recognised as corporate insurance specialists.

It is high time the brokers community began to shift focus to retail because this is where the future of insurance lies in Nigeria. Brokers have the capacity to lead in this area.

Ladies and gentlemen, innovation and disruptive practices cannot occur if we do not broaden our thinking

Trying to make profits from existing lines is not going to deepen insurance penetration, rather we must look at the blue ocean opportunities

This is something I task the management of the insurance companies to constantly think of in product development and deployment

    We must create Awareness

There is a need to generate more awareness and showcase the value of insurance to the public, promoting participation, most especially in the retail space.

We must bridge the insurance knowledge gap if we are to make insurance attractive to Nigerians

Insurance brokers need to participate fully in this drive as they stand to benefit from the initiative like other players in the market.

    In the area of Technology

To remain relevant in the modern business arena, the insurance broker community and, by extension, the entire Nigerian insurance industry, must embrace technology fully.

The body also needs to work towards positioning its members properly for digital integration, mediating between the insuring public and the underwriters digitally.

Embrace technology and digital adoption, current analogue processes need to be eliminated to improve service delivery to our customers

The brokers industry cannot advance when the other financial services are transitioning to online real time and we are still stuck with a system that relies on hard copy files and documents

The brokerage sector needs to drive clean data for the industry. This is not a one person job

    Recapitalisation of the brokerage sector
We need to recapitalise the brokerage industry in our country, N5 million is not enough capital base for an industry. A recommend a minimum of N50 million as a capital base

We need to adequately capitalise the brokerage sector

    The Next Generation

There is also the urgency to develop the next generation of talent to serve the Nigerian insurance industry.

The broker community should rally and become the hub for the education and training of our youths to get qualified talent for the next phase of the industry.

In those days when I was in university, what drove me to want to join banking? it was the profile of bankers, sharp suits, nice cars

It’s funny now that I think about it, but little things on how the people that worked in banking looked made me aspire to the banking profession

We need to raise the profile of our insurance professionals, make it attractive for the younger generation

    Forging Alliances
Apart from collaborating with other industry players as I mentioned earlier, redefining the brokerage profession will entail collaboration with non-industry practitioners as well.
Insurance remains a viable tool for financial inclusion in every country and Nigeria cannot be an exception.
Our two insurance companies, Heirs Life Assurance and Heirs Insurance Limited, are both committed to democratizing access to insurance – which is a great tool for financial inclusion, employment creation, and poverty eradication.
NCRIB as a body has the ability to partner with others to support financial inclusion drive in Nigeria.
Government cannot do it all alone.

At Heirs Holdings, we believe and practice Africapitalism – my economic philosophy that advocates for the private and public sectors to collaborate to achieve the unified goal of alleviating poverty and facilitating shared prosperity.
We also believe in the democratisation of luck and the creation of economic opportunities. One of the ways we have been able to demonstrate this is through the work of The Tony Elumelu Foundation.

    Conclusion

Let me conclude by thanking the organisers of the event for inviting me to address you all

I know that together we can deepen the insurance sector in the country and provide innovative solutions and products that demonstrate the value of insurance to the Nigerian people

    Thank you.

How I married my wife, Gloria with help from family, friends – Mike Bamiloye

As Mike Bamiloye looks forward to marking his 34th wedding anniversary, the popular Nigerian Christian film actor has narrated how he married his wife, Gloria with help from family and friends.

Bamiloye, who is the founder and president of the film production company, Mount Zion Faith Ministries and Mount Zion Television gave the narrative on Friday.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the evangelist disclosed that his best man bought him his suit and shirt for his wedding so that they could wear the same thing.

He also disclosed that it was his sister-in-law that graciously bought the shoes and socks that he wore on his wedding day.

Bamiloye wrote: “When I got married, I didn’t have any money to take my wife to honeymoon. We stayed in the house that we just rented. No Money for Honeymoon.

“Me, that it was my Big Sister that rented the flat for me so that I would not bring my wife to her house.

“Shey, Me, that it was my Best Man that bought my suit and shirt so that I could wear the same thing with him.

“Shey Me, that it was my Sister-in-Law that graciously bought the shoes and socks that I wore on my Wedding Day.

“Gloria and I went around to see where we could rent a Wedding gown and we got a place and told them we would come back with the money, before a Sister in our Ministry gave us the money to deposit for sowing a Wedding Gown.

“Me, that I took my wife to the Registry to ask about Court Marriage and they told us the money to pay for the event, it was a very small amount of money. It was around N170.00 (One Hundred and Seventy NAIRA).

“But we could not get the Money so we collected their forms and never returned with it because I could not get the  money required. So we went to the Wedding without the Registry.

“So we never had Government Marriage Certificate until about Six years ago when and Embassy demanded for it, because we didn’t have the money for Court Marraige.

“All the  Money we got on our Wedding day was used to settle the debts of the printer who printed out Wedding Programs and other things. So, two days after our Wedding, we had no money on us again.

“The following Saturday we had a drama ministrations in ILESA, and we stood beside the road looking for “Lift” to ministration venue.

“But here we are sponsored by GRACE, I thank God I did not marry a lady who would put me under unwarranted pressures and unnecessary constraints. Glory be to God for GLORIA”.

TNG reports Bamiloye and Gloria have been married since 1988. On 8th October 2022, the couple would be celebrating their 34th wedding anniversary. The marriage is blessed with three children.
