“I want to openly request that, besides the fact that today we are going to officially confirm you as our sports ambassador, we want to request that you come back to light up the Gateway Sports Festival torch; you will be the one lighting it up.

“We are going to construct a brand new Anthony Joshua Indoor Boxing Ring, and that boxing ring will be in a stadium here in Abeokuta.

  • How Daniel Dubois almost ended Anthony Joshua’s career

How Daniel Dubois almost ended Anthony Joshua’s career

Britain’s Daniel Dubois destroyed Anthony Joshua’s dream of becoming a three-time heavyweight world champion with a fifth-round knockout to retain his IBF belt at a packed Wembley Stadium on Saturday.

Dubois dropped his compatriot to the canvas in the opening round with a stinging right, the referee delivering a standing eight count. The 27 year-old proceeded to tear up the pre-fight predictions as swiftly as he ripped into his opponent.

Joshua, 34, took another hammering in round two but managed to ride out the storm before round three came crashing down around him again. With Dubois landing more fizzing right-handers, Joshua was literally on the ropes before being saved by the bell.

He could barely stand at the end of the fourth, after going down again with two minutes remaining, and then it was all over in the fifth with the painstaking rebuilding of his career suddenly in ruins.

After landing a few promising blows, any signs of a fightback faded with a right to the chin that sent Joshua down. The former IBF, WBA and IBO champion this time unable to get back on his feet.

“l have only got a few words to say: Are you not entertained?” declared Dubois after the biggest win, and first at Wembley, of a 24-fight career with two defeats.

“I’m a gladiator, I’m a warrior to the bitter end. I want to get to the top level of this game and reach my full potential.

“I’ve been on a rollercoaster ride. This is my time, this is my redemption story, and I’m not going to stop until l reach my full potential,” he added.

Organisers said a British post-World War two record of 96,000 spectators attended the Saudi-funded fight at London’s Wembley Stadium. Among them were Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher, singing three songs on his 52nd birthday ahead of a reunion next year, and Ukraine’s WBC, WBA, and WBO champion, Oleksandr Usyk.

Usyk has beaten both Joshua and Dubois already and will fight Britain’s Tyson Fury, also present, in a rematch in Saudi Arabia in December.

Joshua might have hoped to have a crack at the winner of that fight but instead faces an uncertain future with Dubois sending a seismic ripple through the familiar heavyweight landscape.

Dubois said he hoped for another shot at Usyk, who beat him in nine rounds in Wroclaw, Poland, last year.

Usyk previously held the IBF belt but vacated it for the Fury rematch, with Dubois the interim holder and upgraded to world champion in June.

“Credit to him and his team. We rolled the dice of success, but we came up short” said Joshua after his 13th world heavyweight title fight left him with a record of four defeats from 32 bouts.

He had first won the IBF belt in 2016 from Charles Martin at London’s 02 Arena.

Joshua then lost it to Andy Ruiz in 2019 but won it back later that year. Usyk then took it from him in 2021.

“We keep rolling the dice. I had a sharp opponent, a fast opponent and a lot of mistakes from my end, but that’s the game.”

Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, said he expected to exercise a rematch clause.

“It’s a dangerous fight because he’s growing in confidence all the time but he’ll believe he can beat him,” he said.

The 37-year-old immediately received medical attention before he regained consciousness.

“We move, but regardless I feel okay. I was quite surprised that I remember everything from that fight night and coming back to the locker room. Basically I was conscious right after and since then everything has been good, although (I) still need to run some medical work just in case.

  • Rapper Drake loses $615,000 bet on Joshua vs Ngannou fight

Rapper Drake loses $615,000 bet on Joshua vs Ngannou fight

Canadian International rapper, Drake, has lost a massive 600,000 dollars bet after Anthony Joshua knocked out Francis Ngannou in their much-hyped heavyweight showdown in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Anthony Joshua secured a brutal knockout (KO) against Francis Ngannou in the second round of  the ‘Knockout Chaos’ clash on Friday night.

The superstar recording artiste, known for placing massive bets on sporting events, posted earlier on Instagram that he was betting $615,000 on Ngannou to beat Joshua outright.

“Betting on a scary man,” Drake said.

Drake joined several fans of combat sports to believe that Ngannou could get the job done against Joshua, and if the bet had clicked, it would have paid out $1.9million .

Although Drake has recorded some big wins and losses in betting, he has gained notoriety with the “the Drake Curse”, assertion by fans accusing him of ‘cursing’ athletes and teams after being pictured with them.

The ‘curse’ has affected numerous victims such as quarterback Johny Manziel,UFC fighter  Kamaru Usman, Tennis star Serena Williams,  and even the entire Kentucky Wildcats Basketball team in the United States.

In January, the rapper  lost over half-a-million pounds when he incorrectly backed Sean Strickland to defend his UFC middleweight championship against Dricus Du Plessis.

One of Drake’s biggest bets in 2023   was on YouTube boxer,  Logan Paul to knocout Conor McGregor’s training partner Dillon Danis in their Misfits Boxing fight.

The rapper won $1.3million after Danis was disqualified in the final round for trying to choke Paul unconscious, prompting a massive brawl to break out in the ring.

Earlier before that fight, Drake missed out on a $920,000 payout after Nigerian born Israel Adesanya lost his UFC middleweight title to Sean Strickland.

Drake was routing for Adesanya to knockout Strickland in their world title clash, but Strickland produced a massive upset to win on points.

  • Heavyweight Boxing: Anthony Joshua drops Francis Ngannou in round two

Heavyweight Boxing: Anthony Joshua drops Francis Ngannou in round two

Anthony Joshua produced a superb performance in Riyadh, Saturday morning by knocking out former MMA fighter Francis Ngannou in just the second round of their heavyweight clash.

Joshua landed heavy punches on the crossover heavyweight boxer to ensure he kissed the canvass early enough, just under six minutes  into the bout.

It would be recalled that Ngannou shocked the world when he pushed Tyson Fury all the way in their bout last October, but was destroyed this time around by Joshua who put him down three times with right hands, the last of which prompting an end to the contest with Ngannou unconscious.

The Cameroonian started well and threatened with the left hook before partially landing a looping right but he was stunned by a straight right from Joshua that sent him to the canvas in a dramatic opening round.

Both men came out swinging in the second. Joshua ducked under a jab to find a home for another strong right before the same shot floored Ngannou for the second time.
The former UFC champion returned to his feet and carried on but Joshua ended the contest in incredible fashion, marching forward and unleashing a right hand that knocked Ngannou out cold.
It was a fourth successive win for AJ following back-to-back losses and set up a potential future showdown with the winner of May’s unification bout between Oleksandr Usyk and Fury.

Joshua, however, silenced the doubters, outboxing Ngannou throughout the two rounds and he made a statement like he promised with a knockout win inside just five minutes of their fight.

The Cameroonian boxer needed a doctor after he was knocked out and received oxygen at the corner of the ring before he stood back up.
