Mike Tyson reveals reasons Anthony Joshua stands no chance against Fury

Former heavyweight boxing champion, Mike Tyson, has said Anthony Joshua may not stand a chance against Tyson Fury, the WBC and Lineal heavyweight champion.

“Let’s keep it honest, maybe he [Joshua] punches harder than Wilder but he doesn’t punch faster. If he doesn’t punch faster than Wilder he’s not gonna punch this guy [Fury].

Joshua, the British-Nigerian unified champion, is set to fight Fury later this year after the pair signed a £200 million two-bout deal last week.

In an interview with Haute Living, Tyson, a former undisputed heavyweight champion from 1987 to 1990, explained why he thinks Fury will beat Joshua.

He said Joshua would not land a punch against Fury, as he described the latter as ‘elusive’.

Iron Mike attributed this to Joshua’s method of throwing punches saying ‘he doesn’t punch faster’.

“Listen, I love Anthony Joshua but I really think Tyson is too elusive, he’s not going to hit him,” the Brooklyn-born boxer said.

“Let’s keep it honest, maybe he punches harder than Wilder but he doesn’t punch faster. If he doesn’t punch faster than Wilder he’s not gonna punch this guy [Fury].

“He punches hard but he doesn’t punch fast, and if Tyson Fury can get away from Wilder’s fast punches Joshua might be in trouble.”

Tyson recently came out of retirement to fight an exhibition with Roy Jones Jr. in November last year.

In the interview, he added that he would be fighting Evander Holyfield, his former nemesis, in another exhibition match on May 29.

“I just want everybody to know, the fight is on with me and Holyfield. Holyfield’s a humble man, I know that. And he’s a man of God, but I’m God’s man. And, listen, I’m going to be successful on May 29th,” he said.

Tyson had previously fought Holyfield twice but lost on both occasions.

Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury sign two-fight deal to unify heavyweight titles

Heavyweight boxing champions, Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua has signed contract for a two-fight deal between to unify the heavyweight titles has finally been signed.

“We’d like to get a site deal confirmed in the next month,” said Eddie Hearn, managing director of Matchroom Sport, Joshua’s promoter. “The hard part is always getting everybody to put pen to paper. But this was a major effort from all parties to get this over the line. You had rival promoters, rival networks and rival fighters.”

Not to mention rival egos, always a factor in boxing. The final signature came Saturday, in a provision of services agreement with signees believed to include Fury and Joshua; Joshua’s promoter, Matchroom Boxing; Fury’s American promoter, Top Rank; Fury’s English promoter, Queensbury; and Fury’s management company, Dubai-based MTK.

With the terms of the deal now agreed, principals can solicit offers from prospective sites.

“I actually feel we’ve done the hard part,” Hearn said. “Speaking for myself, Anthony and his team at 258 management [258 MGT], I know how hard we’ve worked hard these last couple of months and I just feel that this fight is so big it’s not a difficult sell. We’ve already had approaches from eight or nine sites. The offers have come from multiple countries in the Middle East, from Asia, Eastern Europe and America.”

The smart money, however, continues to be on the Middle East, where Hearn secured a site fee in excess of $40 million to promote Joshua’s 2019 rematch with Andy Ruiz in Saudi Arabia. The need for a huge site fee becomes particularly acute with seating restrictions and businesses still reeling from COVID, as Middle Eastern countries are seeking less in attendance than favorable publicity.

“This is the biggest fight in boxing and one of the biggest sporting events in the world,” Hearn said. “It will be a major, major win for a country that wants to showcase itself.”

    Anthony Joshua reveals retirement date

Anthony Joshua plans to retire from boxing within the next five years.

Joshua, 31, turned professional in 2013 following his Olympic triumph the year before at the London Games.

He has since won, lost, and then won back three of the four heavyweight world titles – and is in talks with fellow champion Tyson Fury over a summer showdown.

The bitter rivals could clash for all four belts in a bid to determine the first undisputed heavyweight ruler since Lennox Lewis in 2000.

And while Joshua will continue to fight beyond his rivalry with Fury, he already has one eye on retirement.

“This isn’t the start of my career. I’m coming towards the end of my career,” he told Sky Sports.

“I’m not someone who lives in the moment and thinks that everything is just like for now. I’m always planning ahead so I’m coming towards the end of my career.

“Five years left and that’s basically an Olympic cycle. I’ve got an Olympic cycle and a little bit more left, so when you see the next Olympics happen is when I’ll be coming to the end of my career and the next generation will be coming through.”

Pulev fight: Promoter allays fears over Joshua’s knee injury

Plans for Anthony Joshua’s fight with Kubrat Pulev at the end of the year will not be threatened by his knee injury, according to Eddie Hearn.

Joshua wore a protective brace on his left knee at a Black Lives Matter march on Saturday after feeling a ‘twinge’ while training.

But his promoter Hearn confirmed that the injury will not scupper Joshua’s return, despite requiring four weeks’ rest.

Hearn said the fight is ‘still planned for probably October or November’, with November more likely owing to the improved chances of securing a big crowd.

A spokesman for Joshua added: “Anthony felt a slight twinge in his knee whilst training. The brace is a precautionary measure on the advice of physios.

“It will be further checked by his doctors but there is no immediate concern.”

Joshua, the IBF, WBA and WBO heavyweight world champion, was initially scheduled to meet his IBF mandatory challenger Pulev on June 20 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Owing to the situation around the pandemic, subsequent plans were pencilled in for July 25 but the floating plan is now targeting the final quarter of the year.
