Man Utd’s Rashford set for Southampton start, Martial misses out

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford is set to start Saturday’s English Premier League (EPL) match against Southampton but team mate Anthony Martial has not yet recovered from a groin injury.

Rashford was injured in last weekend’s 0-0 draw with Liverpool but played the full 90 minutes as Manchester United had by then used up all three substitutions.

The 21-year-old, who has nine league goals this season, did not start in Wednesday’s 3-1 win at Crystal Palace but came on as a second half substitute.

“He (Rashford) still felt it Wednesday night, but he’ll be ready. I’ll probably start him,” club manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told reporters on Friday.

“You do have a plan, but then you get suspensions and injuries. That one injury or one suspension might change the whole dynamic. It’s a matter of seeing who’s available now.”

Martial has not played since he was withdrawn at half time in Manchester United’s 2-0 defeat by Paris St Germain (PSG) in the UEFA Champions League last 16 two weeks ago.

“It’s the last session today but we’re not going take any risks. Maybe Anthony, but it might just be a few more days before he’s ready. So, probably the squad will look similar to what it did on Wednesday,” Solskjaer added.

Anthony Martial can emulate Ronaldo, says Solskjaer

Anthony Martial has the ability to emulate Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United, according to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Martial became the most expensive teenager in history when he moved to Old Trafford from Monaco in 2015 and he has largely impressed during his time at the club, scoring 47 goals in 164 appearances, Sky Sport reports.

However, the France international looked set to leave in the summer after falling out with Jose Mourinho earlier this season, but he fought his way back into the Portuguese’s plans before signing a new long-term deal last month under Solskjaer.

The 23-year-old marked his first start since that contract with an assist and a superb goal in the 3-0 win against Fulham, where his fine solo effort led ex-United captain Gary Neville to compare it to a Ronaldo effort at Craven Cottage in 2007.

“Yes, it was towards the end of the game and we played a very poor game and Cristiano scored it,” Solskjaer said of his former team-mate’s goal.

“He [Martial] does have similarities, of course. If he wants to be at Cristiano’s level, Anthony knows what he has to do. It’s up to him. He has the talent.”

Martial has scored nine goals in the Premier League already this season, two short of the total he managed in his debut season at the club, and Solskjaer believes the forward belongs at Old Trafford.

“I am glad he is in my team,” the Norwegian added. “He has contributed to so many chances, so many goals.

“He is a Manchester United player. He excites the crowd. He excites the manager. He excites his team-mates. And he is a great character around the place.”

  • Anthony Martial can score 20 goals a season – Solksjaer

Manchester United forward Anthony Martial can score more than 20 goals a season and should develop his career by emulating Cristiano Ronaldo, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said on Friday.

Martial, who extended his Manchester United deal until 2024 on Thursday, has scored 10 goals in all competitions this season.

He is only seven short of his career-best tally of 17 in his debut season at Old Trafford in 2015/2016.

When asked if Martial could score more than 20 goals a season, former Manchester United striker Solskjaer replied: “He has the capability.”

“I’d like him to make a few more runs in behind. He doesn’t miss chances… Those five or six extra goals that I used to do with tap-ins, by making those runs, go a long way.

“He’s a fantastic finisher, so he needs to get more chances. I keep telling him you need to read and sniff whether there’s going to be a chance.”

Solskjaer said Martial should look to model his career on Ronaldo.

The Portuguese scored 42 goals in all competitions in his penultimate season at the club to pick up the Ballon d’Or award in 2008.

“That’s up to any player if you make a decision on how to develop your own career. You talk about Cristiano’s career, what he’s made, how he’s got there… Cristiano was the best,” Solskjaer said.

The Norwegian confirmed Paul Pogba, who picked up a knock in Tuesday’s 2-2 draw with Burnley, was fit for Sunday’s Premier League trip to Leicester City.

Also, Martial could return after missing the last game due to injury.

“We’ve not had a proper session since the game. So, hopefully, both of them can get through that. Anthony will do some rehab work but I would imagine he will be involved,” Solskjaer added.

Anthony Martial signs new Man Utd deal

Manchester United forward Anthony Martial has signed a new contract to remain at Old Trafford until June 2024, with the option to extend for a further year.

The 23-year-old, who joined United from Monaco in September 2015 for £36m, has scored eight Premier League goals this season, has been in talks for a while.

United’s interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said: “For a young man, he has a good footballing brain, which, when coupled with his exceptional talent, makes for a player with an exciting future ahead of him.”

In June, Martial’s agent said his player wanted to leave Old Trafford and it was known former boss Jose Mourinho was happy to sanction his departure.

But United’s hierarchy instead opened fresh negotiations and Martial said on Thursday: “I would like to thank Ole and his coaching staff for their belief in me and for helping me to take my game to the next level.

“I am loving my time at this club.

“From the day I joined, I have been made to feel part of the United family and I have been incredibly humbled and overwhelmed by the warmth and love of our fans, who continue to amaze me with their support.”

EPL: Anthony Martial close to new Man Utd deal

Manchester United are close to agreeing a new long-term contract with winger Anthony Martial.

Martial, 23, has been in talks for a few months and reports in France say the deal could be confirmed by Friday.

In June, Martial’s agent said his player wanted to leave Old Trafford and it was known former boss Jose Mourinho was happy to sanction his departure.

But United’s hierarchy instead opened fresh negotiations and triggered a one-year option on his present deal.

The former Monaco player is currently under contract until 2020.

He has started five times under Mourinho’s successor Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and scored after coming on as a substitute in the FA Cup win at Arsenal on Friday.

Martial missed Tuesday night’s home draw with Burnley after picking up “a slight injury” in training but has managed 10 goals in 25 matches in all competitions this season.

He has 46 goals in 161 outings since joining the club for £36m in 2015.

  • Man Utd extend deal for French star till 2020

Manchester United have triggered the option of a year’s extension on the contract of France forward Anthony Martial.

The 23-year-old’s current deal would have expired in the summer but will now run to 2020.

United took a similar move with their Spain keeper David de Gea last month.

Martial’s representatives remain in discussions with United over a new separate deal beyond the contract that has been extended to 2020.

However Martial’s agent Philippe Lamboley told French TV station RMC he is “very pessimistic about a positive outcome of the discussions”.

“They have already sent us offers that do not meet our expectations, starting at bases very far from our wishes. We are far from an agreement for the time being,” he said.

United signed Martial from Monaco for an initial £36m in 2015, making him the world’s most expensive teenager in the sport.

  • Mourinho wants Martial to stay at Man Utd

Mourinho wants Martial to stay at Man Utd

Jose Mourinho hopes Anthony Martial will stay at Manchester United and has challenged the forward to go from a “top talent” to a “top player”.

Martial, whose deal expires at the end of the season, has rejected an extension offer, but that talks will continue. The club have an option to extend by a further year, Sky Sports reports,

It is understood Mourinho was willing to let the Frenchman go in the summer, however, it appears Martial’s recent performances – scoring four in his last three league games – have changed his manager’s mind.

Asked how confident he is of Martial staying, Mourinho said: “I don’t belong to the discussions of contracts.

“I don’t even know their contracts in the sense of numbers and I’m really happy with that – to not have to participate in these types of discussions.

“Obviously I hope we will agree. He is a talented player – everybody has known that since he was at Monaco. Another thing is a talented player with consistency and understanding what a football match is in the globality.

“When you reach that level or are almost reaching that level is when you become a top player. One thing is a top talent, another thing is a top player.

“When he is now much closer to becoming a top player, obviously I would like him to stay. I know the club very much wants him to stay so hopefully he is going to stay.”

  • Mourinho unsure over Martial return after win over Real Madrid

Mourinho unsure over Martial return after win over Real Madrid

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho said he “doesn’t know” when forward Anthony Martial will link up with the squad after his side beat Real Madrid 2-1 in the International Champions Cup.

Goals from Alexis Sanchez and Ander Herrera earned United a first 90-minute win of their United States trip, but they had to do without Martial in Miami after he left the tour last week to be at the birth of his daughter.

Mourinho questioned why the France international did not return for Saturday’s 4-1 defeat by Liverpool.

Asked if Martial would be part of his squad for Sunday’s game against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena – five days before the start of the Premier League season – he said: “I don’t know.”

Martial has been linked with a move from Old Trafford and it is understood the club would be willing to let him leave for a team outside the Premier League.

Mourinho did confirm attackers Marcus Rashford and Romelu Lukaku and defender Phil Jones had volunteered to return to training three days early in a bid to ensure they are fully fit for the Premier League opener against Leicester on 10 August.

Chile forward Sanchez impressed against Real in the final match of United’s five-game trip, scoring their first goal and creating the second when he nodded Juan Mata’s cross into the path of Herrera, who finished with a first-time shot.

Summer signing Fred started in midfield, while goalkeeper David de Gea returned to the team.

Gareth Bale started for Real but his only chance of note was a curling shot that went wide.

Karim Benzema, the only player who began the Champions League final win over Liverpool to start in Miami, pulled one back in first-half stoppage time.
