APC: 87 aspirants for 26 legislative seats screened in Osun

The Chairman of the Osun State Legislative Screening Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Osagie Ize-Iyamu, has said 87 aspirants will be screened for 26 legislative seats in the state.

Ize-Iyamu, addressing reporters yesterday at the APC secretariat, said 81 of the aspirants obtained their forms in Osun State, while six others bought theirs from the national secretariat in Abuja.

He said the committee would be fair to all the aspirants.

“Eighty-seven aspirants sought to contest for 26 seats of the House of Assembly. That is to tell you how popular the APC is. Eighty-one bought their forms in Osun here and six bought their forms in Abuja.

“There are constitutional requirements and there are party requirements, but basically, we want to be sure they are Nigerian citizens.

“We want to see local government certificates, they must be party members, they must be voters, and we also want to know their age, we want to see their educational qualifications, if you claim to be a doctor, you must provide a certificate to prove it.”

Recall that sometime in April, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) published the personal particulars and list of candidates (Form EC9) for the Osun State governorship election.

The commission in a statement by Festus Okoye, National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, in Abuja, said the list was published at INEC state and local government offices in Osun State as required by law.

Mr Okoye said that the list was published in compliance with the Electoral Act 2022, following the close of nominations by political parties.

It was gathered that according to the published particular of the 15 candidates, while none of the governorship candidates was female, six of the deputy governorship candidates were female.

The published candidates include Adegboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress, Adeleke Nurudeen of the Peoples Democratic Party, and Omigbodun Akinrinola of Social Democratic Party.

He remind political parties that under Section 32(2) of the Electoral Act 2022, any party that observes that the name of its candidate is missing from the list “shall notify the Commission in writing.”

He said that such letter must be signed by such party national chairman and secretary, supported with an affidavit not later than 90 days to the election.

“Furthermore, the attention of parties is drawn to Section 32(3) of the Electoral Act 2022, which provides that failure to notify the Commission “shall not be ground to invalidate the election”.

“The final list is published in our State and Local Government offices in Osun State as well as our website and social media platforms for public information as required by law.

“Political parties are enjoined to note the provision of the law for compliance,” he said.

2023 Elections: APC fixes date for sale of nomination forms

All Progressives Congress (APC) will begin sale of expression of interest and nomination forms on Tuesday. The exercise which was already billed to start on Saturday was postponed due to some logistics problems and administrative challenges.

A source within the APC has disclosed that Tuesday is a visible date for the exercise to kick start in a make shift office in Abuja because of the renovation going on at the Abuja APC secretariat.

It was gathered that nomination forms for aspirants to the State House of Assembly will be sold in the various states as the party has decided to send this category of forms to each of 36 State headquarters of the party.

According to the source “The sales of expression of interest and nomination forms will now start nationwide on Tuesday.

”The NWC is conscious of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) June 3rd deadline given to all political parties, hence, it was resolved that forms for State Houses of Assembly be sold at the state level. The National Secretariat will dispatch the State House of Assembly forms to the states over the weekend to enable them to start on Tuesday.

“For those aspiring for other positions from House of Representatives, Senate, Governorship and Presidential, their forms will be sold by the National Secretariat at a designated place to be announced by Monday. The ongoing renovation at the Mohammadu Buhari House necessitated the change in venue of sales.” Our source further said: “but for the delay in the delivery of the forms by the printers, the NWC is committed to concluding all arrangements for the conduct of primaries as scheduled by INEC.

”We will do everything possible to start the process by Tuesday 26th of April”

“We are good to go by Tuesday. Detail information about the exercise will soon be made known to the Press,”

BREAKING: Obaseki in APC secretariat for submission of interest form

The Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, has arrived at the National Secretariat of the All Progressives Congress to submit his governorship expression of interest and nomination forms.

Obaseki went to the secretariat with a company of close aides and a handful of supporters.

Upon his arrival, the governor went into the office of the National Organising Secretary, Emma Ibediro.

Recall that Obaseki restated in Abuja, yesterday, that no matter the challenges, he would contest the forthcoming governorship election on the platform of APC.

The governor added that “when the going gets tough, the tough get going,” explaining that “the war has become very tough,” but “men would be separated from the boys.”

The Oshiomhole camp in the state chapter of the party has propped up a former Secretary to the State Government, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, who recently defected from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to struggle with Obaseki for the party’s governorship ticket.

  • 2019: Buhari's former minister, 'Mama Taraba' retrieves computers, furniture donated to APC secretariat

Former Women Affairs Minister, Aisha Alhassan, who recently resigned her appointment and dumped the All Progressives Congress (APC), has retrieved computers and furniture she donated to the party’s state secretariat in Jalingo, the state capital.

According to Aaron Artimas, APC publicity secretary in the state, Alhassan, popularly called “Mama Taraba” also removed rugs, air-conditioning sets and tables she had bought for the political party when she was a member.

We find this development shameful, unfortunately it is true. The former minister has emptied the office she furnished when she was a member of the APC,” Artimas told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Wednesday in Jalingo.

Artimas said the party leadership obliged her request and watched as she removed everything from the party secretariat, and expressed surprise that the former minister stooped so low to recover even minor items she had donated to the party.

It is amazing to us because Aisha Alhassan was the highest beneficiary of the party in the state,” he claimed.

Artimas said Alhassan had embarrassed herself with that action because she was still keeping the benefits that accrued to her as minister under the APC-led federal government.

It is a very shameful action, but we shall leave her to conscience,” he said.

Reacting, however, Alhassan said she did not order the removal of the items, but supported it because of the injustice the party meted to her.

I bought the items with my money; when my boys told me they were removing them from the party secretariat, I gave them the go ahead because the APC does not deserve anything of mine,” she told NAN in an interview from Abuja.

She dismissed the claims that the items were moved from Jalingo to Abuja.

I could not have moved the items to Abuja. I merely gave my boys the nod to move them out because the APC was wicked to me. If I had left the party on my own, I would not have bothered about the items, but you know the circumstances that pushed me out.

I bought the items to furnish the party secretariat, but since I have moved to the UDP, I did not see anything wrong with moving with all my belongings. They should buy their own furniture for the offices,” she said.

Alhassan, who was screened out of the gubernatorial race by the party, resigned as minister of women affairs and also withdrew her membership of the party before joining the UDP to pursue her governorship ambition.

Alhassan had contested for the seat in 2015, on the platform of the APC, but lost to the incumbent, Darius Ishaku of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
