Why many politicians are joining APC – Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has explained that the growing influx of politicians into the All Progressives Congress (APC) is a direct result of the party’s achievements in less than two years in office. He reassured Nigerians that this trend would not lead to a one-party state.

Speaking at the APC Renewed Hope Agenda Summit, held at the State House Conference Centre on Thursday, Tinubu addressed key figures including the party leadership, members of the National Working Committee, National Assembly leaders, and the Progressive Governors’ Forum, which includes 22 governors. During the event, all attendees reportedly backed his re-election bid, according to a statement by his spokesperson, Mr. Bayo Onanuga.

“A one-party state doesn’t align with democratic principles. We’re currently the party in power, delivering on the people’s expectations. Naturally, people are abandoning failing parties for one that offers solutions,” Tinubu said. “I’m pleased with our progress and confident that more will join us—that’s how politics works.”

He emphasized that Nigerians have the constitutional freedom to choose their political affiliations. “I appreciate everyone’s efforts. We’re only halfway into this journey that began 24 months ago,” Tinubu stated.

The President commended members of his cabinet for bravely pushing the vision of a better Nigeria and expressed gratitude to the National Assembly and APC leadership for their consistent support.

“We made a collective promise to tackle Nigeria’s challenges head-on—restoring trust, fostering prosperity, and reviving our economy. I’m proud to say our economic policies are beginning to yield results. Meaningful change is rarely easy, and tough choices are sometimes necessary for future gains.”

Under the Renewed Hope Agenda, the administration committed to addressing economic instability, enhancing national security, combating corruption, reforming governance, and alleviating poverty.

He criticized the previous foreign exchange system, calling it the root of corruption. “Take, for instance, the EFCC’s recovery of over 750 properties from a single individual. That speaks volumes,” he said.

Tinubu acknowledged the initial difficulties encountered since taking office in May 2023 but maintained that significant strides have been made through critical reforms.

“We’ve dismantled the arbitrage-prone multiple exchange rate regime and are introducing comprehensive tax reforms. These efforts are already drawing foreign direct investments, which will create jobs and improve living standards for our citizens,” he added.

The summit was convened to assess the administration’s progress over two years in key sectors of the economy. Tinubu noted that both domestic and international observers have commended the reforms focused on long-term national development.

In a statement issued in Gusau on Tuesday by the State APC Publicity Secretary, Yusuf Idris, the party called on security agencies to thoroughly investigate the matter.

“The state PDP Women Leader, Hajiya Rabi Madawaki, made the statement in the presence of the Governor’s wife,  Hajiya Huriyya Dauda.

“The threat and intimidation by the PDP women leader came out with a completely different but savage way of forcing out support and subsequently,  votes for the governor,  Mr Dauda Lawal in the 2027 governorship election.

“Madawaki said in the presence of governor’s wife in Hausa language, at a gathering held in Gusau on Friday that translated as ‘anyone who does not vote for Dauda, we will maim, beat, kill him,  (zamu ci ubanshi zamu yi mashi duka)’.

  • Why defections can’t be avoided in Nigerian politics – APC Chieftain

Why defections can’t be avoided in Nigerian politics – APC Chieftain

An All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Malam Abubakar Abdullahi, has said that there is no way defections can be avoided in Nigerian politics.

Abdullahi, in an interview with NAN in Abuja on Tuesday, attributed cross carpeting by some politicians to desire for political protection.

“You see in Nigerian politics, defections cannot be avoided. There are certain issues that force people to defect.

“Majority of the present crops of the elected officials and political appointees are not well-bred politicians. They are just opportunists.

“Once they got elected or appointed, they indulge in all sorts of unruly behaviours which lead them to commit a lot of atrocities,” he said.

Abdullahi, who is the Secretary of former ANPP members in APC, said that most defections were doing so as a way of escaping from being penalised for corrupt practices and other offences.

“Most of them will be running helter-skelter, looking for where to hide,” he said.

According to him, majority of the defections are occasioned by selfish and personal security rather than principle.

The APC chieftain, however, assured that defections would not lead Nigeria to one-party state ‘because at the end the day, the defectors will definitely betray those who believe in them’.

Abdullahi expressed dissatisfaction with the attitudes of Nigerian political elite, saying that they had polluted the system through manipulation of the process, to detriment of the larger populace.

He, therefore, called for change in attitudes and value system as a way out of the situation.

Just In: Kidnappers kill APC chairman after collecting ₦5 million ransom

Nelson Adepoyigi, a chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ose Local Government Area,  has been murdered by his abductors despite payment of ransom.

TheNewsGuru reports that Adepoyigi was abducted on Monday, May 12th while attempting to park his vehicle at his residence in Ifon.

The kidnappers, in the days following his capture, initially demanded a ransom of ₦100 million, but after extensive negotiation and community appeals, the amount was reduced to ₦5 million.

Following the arrangements, two residents of Ifon volunteered to deliver the agreed ransom sum, but upon reaching the abductors, they were also seized. The kidnappers then demanded an additional ₦30 million for the release of all three individuals.

Though the two volunteers were eventually freed, community sources revealed a chilling claim by the kidnappers: that Adepoyigi had already been marked for execution by those allegedly orchestrating the abduction.

Confirming the tragic incident, the Chairman of Ose Local Government, Kolapo Ojo, expressed deep concern over the worsening state of security in the area. “This pattern of brazen abductions, even at the very gates of people’s homes, confirms that insecurity has taken a dangerous and intolerable dimension.”

He further urged residents to be proactive in safeguarding their communities: “We urge our people to remain vigilant, promptly report suspicious activities to the nearest security post, and stand united as we work together to overcome this threat,” he said.
