Edo election tribunal: Our case against APC is documentary based – PDP chair

Mr Anthony Aziegbemin, the Chairman, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo, on Monday, said their petition against the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the governorship election tribunal sitting in Abuja was documentary based.

Aziegbemin stated this while briefing the newsmen in Abuja shortly after the PDP and its candidate in the Sept. 21 governorship poll, Mr Asue Ighodalo, closed their case against the APC and Gov. Monday Okpebholo, after calling 19 witnesses.

“We think the case is pretty straight forward, we think it is documentary based, we think it is specific, we think the judiciary will give it some judicial cognisance of what we tendered before them.

“We believe that they (tribunal) have all they need from us and all what we should produce, I think we have given it to them.

“And we expect them to look at them and see how it goes. But suffices to say that it is not a petition as we used to have it in the country where you call a lot of witnesses.

“We didn’t need to call a lot of witnesses, we called the witnesses that we needed, to prove our case and make our case more solid,” he said.

Aziegbemin, however, expressed surprise that INEC objected to admissibility of BVAS it was subpoenaed to produce as evidence before the tribunal from 133 polling units of the state.

“Is it not strange? You conducted an election,  you certified documents for the petitioners, petitioners want to tender this documents and you said you were objecting to it, that you will give reasons later.

“I can understand Okpebholo and APC objecting, but for INEC to object to its own documents being tendered in court, I think it is strange.

“So that gives us and Nigerians something to think about.

“Why will INEC oppose the documents it certified to the petitioners to  be tendered in the open court? I think the tribunal will look into that and see why they are objecting, though they said they will give reasons at the address stage but it is strange. It doesn’t add up.

NAN eports that a Senior Technical Officer in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)’s ICT Department, Mr Anthony Itodo, had on Thursday, Jan. 30, tendered 148 Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), machines.

Also, INEC, on Monday, tendered an additional five BVAS machines before the Justice Wilfred Kpochi-led three-member panel of the Edo Governorship Election Petition Tribunal.

However, INEC, APC and Okpebholo, who are respondents in the petition, through their counsel, objected to the tendering of the machines.

  • Delta APC heads for the rocks as Nwoko complicates the conflict – By Nze Otuniya

Delta APC heads for the rocks as Nwoko complicates the conflict – By Nze Otuniya

When Senator Ned Nwoko launched his attacks, mid last year, against Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, discerning minds knew that his intentions were far from being altruistic, that he was only disgruntled over personal issues and only preparing grounds for leaving the PDP.

It was obvious that, being unable to secure executive and delegate positions for his supporters in the PDP ward, local government and state congresses, which threatened his prospect of retaining the party’s ticket to return to the Senate, he immediately considered defecting to the APC.

While his propaganda team continued to make believe that he was all about the good of Anioma nation and Delta North Senatorial District, it became increasingly clear that his antics was merely about his political survival.

They tried so much to deny this motive with deceptive narratives of passion for the creation of Anioma State, fighting for the step down of Okpai Independent Power Plant and the rehabilitation of Ogwashi-Uku Dam, but deny as they did, alas, the hen has come to roost, and he has finally left the PDP and now headed for the APC, as suspected, putting paid to their needless denials and orchestrated media stunts.

It is now recognised that his objective for going over to the APC is simply and solely to pick the party’s Senatorial ticket, no more nor less.

Interestingly, standing at the gate of Delta North APC is Senator Peter Nwaoboshi. They both have an interesting political history between them and with the PDP.

Nwaoboshi had been State Chairman and two-time Senator, 2015 and 2019, under the PDP, before defecting to the APC.

Nwoko got his first cap as a member of the House of Representatives for Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency, 1999 to 2003, also under the PDP, but feeling made and possibly banking on tribal appeal, he defected to APGA in 2003 to contest for governorship against the sitting governor, James Ibori. He lost and subsequently returned to the PDP.

In 2011, he again left the PDP to DPP to contest for Senate, lost again, returned to the PDP, and left again to contest the Senate against Nwaoboshi in 2019.

That election and its aftermath were intriguing. Supported by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, Nwaoboshi defeated Nwoko hands down, but banking on his legal background, Nwoko did everything to upturn the victory.

Nwaoboshi finally had the day at the Court of Appeal, but eventually not without the price of finding himself in prison, notwithstanding that he subsequently defected to the APC possibly in search of reprieve.

His defection led the PDP to settle for Nwoko as its Senatorial candidate in the 2023 election against Nwaoboshi, who contested from the prison, and the PDP won with Nwoko.

Today, less than two years after being supported against Nwaoboshi, Nwoko is going over again to the APC, just like Nwaoboshi did midway in his second term, to grab the ticket.

Nwaoboshi is believed to be uncomfortable with the entry of Nwoko into the APC, much worse gifting the Senatorial ticket on a platter to an old and sworn enemy.

Knowing this, Nwoko has decided to pitch tent with Festus Keyamo’s group, which seems to have the blessing of the national leadership of the party against the Ovie Omo-Agege group.

Their reasoning is that being the highest serving member of the party in government, Keyamo should be the leader of the party. The Omo-Agege group, to which Nwaoboshi belongs, would not have it, on the grounds that as a former Deputy President of the Senate, one time number five man of the country, and former Gubernatorial candidate of the party, he is most senior. They also argue that Keyamo is not on ground, essentially alien in Delta politics, and can not move a needle politically.

The battle rages on with the main plot of “Agege versus Keyamo” at the state level and the sub-plot of “Nwaoboshi versus Nwoko” at the Senatorial District level.

It was for this reason that the Agege group designed a tour of Delta North local governments and wards on the verge of Nwoko’s defection to the APC. The objective being to consolidate on their supporters and hold the ground before Nwoko’s entry, to ensure that he does not just stroll in from the PDP to pick the APC Senatorial ticket after all that Nwaoboshi has suffered.

It was also calculated to ensure that the members of the party are held tight and shielded from penetration by Keyamo, suspected to be nursing governorship ambition and hoping to just stroll in from Abuja to pick the party’s Gubernatorial ticket against Agege’s plan of re-contesting in 2027, after his woeful outing in 2023.

They are all driven by the illusion of receiving federal might and permitted electoral rascality.

Still, there is a third force in Delta North APC, the Rt Hon Victor Ochei, former Minority Leader under the UNPP, and later Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly under the PDP.

He reportedly had eyed succeeding former Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, but seeing that the Governor then favoured the late John Obuh, while the leadership of the party stood on Ifeanyi Okowa, he defected to the APC.

Securing neither the Governorship nor Senatorial ticket, he was rewarded with the appointment of Executive Director, Maritime Labour and Cabotage of NIMASA, and while Nwaoboshi was in prison, he funded and sustained the party in Delta North, even though its formidability remains ragtag.

He has been maintaining a studied quiet over the intrigues and shenanigans playing out in the Agege-Keyamo and Nwaoboshi-Nwoko plots.

Positioned as a conciliator, he has been calling for unity, but Agege and Nwaoboshi are digging in every day, while Keyamo and Nwoko are also scheming harder to outwit and outfox them. The indication is that there would be “no agreement today, no agreement tomorrow,” in Delta APC as Nwoko’s entry marks the very beginning of things fall apart.

  • No credible alternative to APC – Masari

No credible alternative to APC – Masari

The former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Aminu Masari, says that there is no credible alternative to the All Progressives Congress’s (APC) administration in salvaging the plight of Nigerians.

Masari spoke on Sunday in Kafur, Kafur Local Government Area at the inauguration of the campaign for  the state’s local government councils election scheduled for February 15.

“The news making rounds in the social media that some politicians are teaming up for merger is nothing but regrouping of those who lost political favours in the APC, in terms of appointments or patronage.

“Their attempt to form an alliance will not divert the attention of APC from conceiving and implementing programmes that could assuage the pains of the common man” the former Governor of the state added.

Masari urged Nigwrians to exercise more patience with the APC administration, adding that the harsh economic hardship being faced by Nigerians was a global phenomenon.

He said further that as a founding member of the APC, he would remain committed to the ideals of the party.

Masari added, “I am in APC today, tomorrow and always because I am not in the party for any political position or appointment.”

The former speaker charged all APC loyalists to propagate the good works and ideals of the party while pleading with people to take any shortcoming as a human error.

“I am appealing to the people of Kafur Local Government Area to come out en-mass to vote for APC in the coming LG election,”  Masari said.

Speaking at the occasion, the Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Political Matters, Alhaji Ibrahim Kabir-Masari, urged APC members across all divides to close ranks and work assiduously to ensure the success of the party all the times.

He announced that Tinubu had awarded a contract for the reconstruction and upgrading of  the Zaria to Malumfashi and  Funtua-Yashe Roads, in an effort to facilitate socio-economic activities.

The presidential aide  also said that the president had approved the establishment of a Federal College of Agricultural at Nabanje, Masari.

Kabir-Masari added, “I can assure you that more developmental projects will be awarded to the people of the area in due course.”

  • APC bars members without PVC from attending meetings

APC bars members without PVC from attending meetings

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) says party members without Permanent Voter Cards(PVCs)will no longer be allowed to attend ward and local government  meetings.

The Lagos APC Chairman, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, said this in his address to party members in Lagos.

The chairman’s address was delivered by party’s representatives at the party’s Local Government Areas(LGA)meetings  in  the 20 local governments and Local Council Development Areas(LCDAs) on Thursday.

Ojelabi  also called for unity in the party ,saying that would guarantee victory for the party in the forthcoming council election.

“Get prepared for PVC registration. There is no place for any member of our party without PVC. Henceforth, once you do not have PVC, don’t attend our party meetings.

“Leaders should come together and be united. Each LGA is expected to set up a reconciliation committee where necessary, and inform the party, if the need arises,” the chairman said .

Ojelabi thanked members for their  commitment and support toward the progress of our party.

“As we approach the forthcoming Local Government elections, kindly take note of the party’s continuous registration for new members, which will commence soon.

“The party has not issued any guidelines for the upcoming Local Government elections yet,” Ojelabi  added.

Ojelabi said the party  was committed to free and fair   primary elections.

He said there would be no refunds for purchased forms by any aspirants in the election.

The chairman also said that purchasing the party’s form would not guarantee any political appointment.

Ojelabi urged members to continue to keep faith with the party to deliver democratic dividends.

Speaking on the importance  of LG  meetings ,APC spokesman in the state , Mr Seye Oladejo, said  the meetings were important for the strengthening of  the party’s strictures at the grassroots.

Oladejo said the meetings  would be followed by the meetings in the 377 wards in the state.

“The meetings provide an opportunity to disseminate information from the state leadership of the party to the grassroots, as regards upcoming council elections, among others,” he said.

  • Edo poll: PDP witness insists on irregularities as Okpebholo, APC lawyers disagree

Edo poll: PDP witness insists on irregularities as Okpebholo, APC lawyers disagree

Victor Eseigbe, a politician from Akoko Edo Local Government Area of Edo, on Thursday, testified as Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s witness at the ongoing governorship election tribunal, insisting that the poll was marred by irregularities.

Eseigbe, who had the witness code: WW1M/9, gave his testimony while being led in evidence by the petitioners’ counsel, Ken Mozia, SAN, in Abuja.

The Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal was moved to Abuja following reports of violence at the tribunal venue in Edo.

The petitioners; Dr Asue Ighodalo and the PDP are challenging the victory of Gov. Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the governorship election.

At today’s sitting, three witnesses testified.

Eseigbe, while giving his evidence, identified and confirmed the submission of Form EC8A for 28 polling units, including certified copies and agents’ copies as exhibits.

During cross-examination, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)’s counsel, Kanu Agabi, SAN, questioned the authenticity of the witness’s role.

He observed that the witness did not sign Form EC8B for Ward 9, which was used for ward collation.

“Since you did not sign, what proof do you have that you were a ward collation officer?” Agabi asked and the witness responded that he noticed irregularities, which led him to refrain from signing the documents.

Agabi further asked on the validity of his testimony, emphasising that he did not personally document any of the election reports.

The discrepancies in accreditation figures emerged when APC’s counsel, Dr Onyechi Ikpeazu, SAN, pointed out contradictions between figures recorded in the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) reports and those declared by INEC.

While the witness cited 71 accredited voters in Unit 001 of Ward 1, BVAS reports showed 252 accredited voters.

Similarly, Unit 003 had 262 registered voters, but only 116 were reflected in BVAS records.

Emmanuel Ukala, SAN, who appeared for Gov. Okpebholo, raised further concerns about inconsistencies in the document.

Ukala said that some tendered exhibits, such as Forms EC8B and EC8C, contained figures that did not correspond with their counterparts in Form EC8A.

“Can you confirm if the figures in Form EC8B match those in EC8A?” Ukala asked.

“It is the incorrect figures that we complained about,” the witness responded.

The defence also questioned whether BVAS and the hard copies were presented for reconciliation at the ward level.

The witness confirmed that they did but said that there was no proper compilation.

During the proceedings, Mozia sought to tender the witness’s agent tag as proof of his role in the governorship election.

However, Agabi and other defence lawyers objected to the tendering of the document, arguing that it had not been previously mentioned in the witness’s testimony.

Despite the objection, the tribunal, chaired by Justice Wilfred Kpochi, ruled in favour of the petitioners and admitted the agent’s tag as evidence.

Another witness, Oyigwe Imasue, a PDP agent from Oredo Local Government Area, confirmed that a certified true copy of an election result was included in his witness statement.

However, the defence counsel subjected the witness to rigorous scrutiny.

Agabi questioned Imasue’s credibility and his role in the collation process.

The third witness was a subpoenaed witness from INEC (1st respondent) who produced the BVAS machines used in 133 polling units.

The witness, Anthony Itodo, a Senior Technical Officer from INEC’s ICT Department, said he produced BVAs machines and other electoral material used .

He informed the court that he was present with the device used for the election.

The tribunal accordingly admitted the subpoena documents tendered by the witness as evidence and reserved ruling on objection raised by the respondents .

The tribunal adjourn until Friday for continuation of trial.

Zamfara Assembly: APC fumes over Minority Leader seat declared vacant

The Zamfara chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), on Wednesday, condemned the  state House Assembly’s declaration of the Minority Leader’s seat vacant.

This is contained in a statement by the state APC Publicity Secretary, Malam Yusuf Idris issued in Gusau, Zamfara.

The minority leader, Alhaji Aliyu Ango-Kagara represents Talata Mafara South State Constituency in the assembly on the platform of APC.

The State legislators had during the plenary on Tuesday declared Ango-Kagara’s seat vacant over alleged absenteeism.

The state APC publicity secretary, however, described the assembly’s action as an embarrassment and  abuse of office.

“We consider the assembly’s action as a move to weed out the APC from the state assembly.

“The declaration of the minority leader’s seat vacant was just for political reasons to silence the opposition in the house,” Idris alleged.

The State APC appealed to the National Assembly to call the Zamfara assembly to order.

“We condemn the action of Zamfara assembly, we caution the state lawmakers that the matter may lead the APC  to approach a Court of law for proper interpretation and claim of  damages.

“We condemn the assembly in totality, this is coming in addition to the illegal suspension of eight members of the house since January 2024,” Idris added.

The APC leadership in the state also alleged that members of the opposition party in the state were suspended illegally by the house without recourse to the constitutional provision or House standing rules.

“This is very unfortunate that the leadership of the house have been fighting their colleagues who refused to dance to their tunes especially as rubber stamps.

“Even if a member of the house is found in violation of the House rules, he must be given fair hearing preceding any action and not the blind-folded action of those members who think their uniformed act will hold water,” Idris said.

  • Aregbesola loyalists meet, agree to quit APC

Aregbesola loyalists meet, agree to quit APC

Members of the Omoluabi Progressives, a political group of a former governor of Osun, Rauf Aregbesola, said they had agreed to quit the All Progressives Congress (APC).

This is contained in a statement signed by the group’s organising and publicity secretary, Oluwaseun Abosede, and made available to newsmen on Monday in Osogbo.

Abosede said that the resolution to leave APC was reached by stakeholders from all the 332 wards in the state during the group’s monthly meeting in Ilesa.

“Some of the reasons the group is quitting APC include allegations of ostracism, suspension, and expulsion of members without fair hearing. Another reason is the perceived neglect and denigration of the group within the APC structure.

“Also, the dissatisfaction with the party’s handling of internal crises, which contributed to APC’s poor performance in the last election cycle in Ogun, is another reason.

“Members of the group were put to a voice vote by the leadership and they unanimously affirmed their readiness to switch allegiance to another political platform ahead of the 2026 Osun governorship election,” Abosede said.

Speaking at the meeting, the statement stated that Aregbesola commended members of the group for their commitment to the principles of integrity, character, and good governance.

He appealed to them to remain steadfast as they repositioned Omoluabi Progressives for the future. Aregbesola, the immediate past Minister of Interior, said that the decision of the group to quit APC marked the beginning of a new journey towards entrenching responsible leadership in Osun.

“I am indeed happy that all of you have spoken with one voice. A united front to lead the way to our collective victory in the journey ahead. Our mission is to raise the level of prosperity of our dear state through responsible leadership.

”The path we have chosen is smooth, highly reassuring, and full of good tides that will propel Osun to greatness. Therefore, you must show more commitment and attract genuine people who are ready to walk this path of righteousness with us”, he said.

He assured the group that ongoing efforts to properly position the Omoluabi Progressives for future challenges would soon yield positive results.

“We are open to all, regardless of political, religious, or socio-cultural affiliations. We have the numbers, strength, and political acumen to provide leadership that will make Osun the envy of its peers. By the grace of God, we shall succeed,” he said.

  • MANI ONYE: Nwoko and Nwaoboshi: Nothing for us in APC to be proud of

MANI ONYE: Nwoko and Nwaoboshi: Nothing for us in APC to be proud of

For a party that is still trying to find its feet after the disastrous outing in the 2023 General Election generally blamed on the leadership style of Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, it is saddening that the All Progressives Congress, APC is still unable to articulate a response to the ruling party in Delta State.

The betrayal of the common interest is fanned across the three senatorial districts. In Delta South, the party is still reeling from the bad blood between the three dominant ethnic groups, the Isoko, Itsekiri and Ijaw.

In Delta Central, the attempt by those around Senator Omo-Agege to cripple the recognised state leadership of Engr. Hon. Omeni Sobotie has led to the sharp divisions that culminated in the devaluation of the party in the senatorial district.

Remarkably, the same dose of insanity is fanning the embers of disunity that has turned the party into a laughing stock among the reasonable men in Delta North. Genuine party members are gripped in shame as men of questionable political pedigree struggle for the leadership of the party in Delta North.

Significantly, the two men spearheading the crisis in Delta North, Senators Ned Nwoko and Peter Nwaoboshi are not examples that genuine members and lovers of the party should be proud of. Both men who are spin-offs from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP defected to the APC for no other reason but for their selfish political reasons.

Nwaoboshi who was originally elected on the platform of the PDP and served his two terms in the Senate crossed over to the APC on the fear that Senator Ifeanyi Okowa would reposes the ticket from him. So with all certainty, no genuine APC member will say that he had altruistic motives in crossing over to the APC. Is it any surprise that he spent most of his campaign period running away from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC?

It was as such no surprise that Mr. Ned Nwoko whose rise to fame was upon wealth supposedly made from commission from Nigeria’s debt relief and also marriage to a lady more than 30 years younger than him easily won the election on the platform of the PDP.

That the APC lost the Delta Senate election to a man whose moral quotient was debatable goes well to speak of Nwaoboshi’s moral fortitude and right to fly the APC ticket in 2023.

However, what will shock people today now is that Nwoko has now crossed over to the APC putting to question the integrity of the moral perimeters around the party in Delta State. Is the APC now a dumping ground for those with questionable judgments in moral persuasion?

It is no surprise that even before Nwoko has entered the party that we are being entertained to a fight in the mud between him and Nwaoboshi.

Senator Nwaoboshi in a strategic move to keep the food to himself has raised obstacles to the entry of Nwoko into the APC. He has not given any strong reason only alleging that Nwoko wants to dissolve the party structure and that the incumbent senator negotiated his entry through power brokers in Abuja.

The Nwoko camp on its part is accusing Nwaoboshi of wanting to sustain his hegemony and squash the growth of the party in Delta State.

However, genuine lovers and members of the party do not see anything to be proud of the ongoing supremacy battle between Nwaoboshi and Nwoko. None of them has the moral fibre that any genuine party member should be proud of.

The ongoing battle will not only diminish the APC in Delta North and Delta State as a whole, but will lead to the disappearance of the APC as a vibrant opposition capable of challenging the supremacy of the PDP.

  • LG election: APC wins 18 chairmanship, 203 councilorship seats in Ondo

LG election: APC wins 18 chairmanship, 203 councilorship seats in Ondo

The All Progressive Congress (APC) has won all the 18 chairmanship and 203 councilorship seat in the Local Government (LG) election held on Jan.18 in Ondo State.

Dr Joseph Aremo, Chairman, Ondo State  Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC), made the announcement at the commission’s headquarters on Sunday night in Akure.

Aremo, who explained that the election was keenly contested by 13 different political parties, said it was peaceful without any casualty or loss of lives and properties during the exercise.

According to him, there are 203 wards and 18 Local Governments in Ondo State.

“The election across the 203 wards was keenly contested, and candidates sponsored by APC emerged as councilors elect in the 2025 local government election of Ondo State.

“Also for the chairmanship election as well, it was keenly contested and from presentations made at the respective LG level, the candidates of APC emerged winner across all the 18 councils,” he said.

Aremo, therefore, appreciated Ondo State residents for upholding the tenet of rule of law, and for coming out to vote for the candidates of their choices.

According to him, the presentation of the results show that Saturday’s election was free, fair, credible and transparent.

The chairman assured residents of the commission’s readiness to do more in subsequent elections, and called on political parties to play their roles in terms of voter education and participation.

“Whatever the short coming we might identify in the process, we will definitely improve, especially in the area of enlightement.

“But we cannot do it alone, because political parties must step up the desire to enlighten their members in terms of voter education and participation.

“Sovereignty ultimately belongs to the people and they should be allowed to choose whoever they want as their leaders,” he said.

NAN reports that Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) withdrew their participation 48 hours to the election.

They alleged the lack of confidence in ODIEC to conduct free, credible, and transparent election.

Ondo LG election: APC clears 16 LGAs, results of 2 councils pending

The Ondo State  Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC) has declared the All Progressive Congress (APC) as winner in 16 local governments in Saturďay’s election held in the state.

At least 12 political parties participated in the local government election for positions of chairman, deputy chairman and councillors in the 18 local government councils.

Announcing the result on Sunday, Dr Joseph Aremo, Chairman of the Commission and Chief Returning Officer, said that the APC also won all the councillorship seats in the 16 LGA.

Aremo said that the results for Owo LGA and Ondo West LGA, which was cancelled and rescheduled for Sunday, due to wrong logo of one of the parties on the ballot papers would be announced later.

The election in Ondo West LGA was cancelled because the old logo of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) was on the ballot papers.

ODIEC chairman and the election’s returning officer, said that after the conclusion of the Ondo West LGA election later today,  the two remaining results would be announced at 7:00p.m.

The ODIEC chairman said that Owo LG and Ondo West, which was cancelled due to the missed up of  one of the political parties, NNPP Logo would be announced by 7pm after the conclusion of the election on Sunday.

The Peoples Democratict Party (PDP), one of the 13 parties registered for the election, withdrew 48 hours to the event.

The party’s Director of Media and Publicity in the state Mr Leye Igbagbo, in a statement issued on Thursday in Akure, said that the withdrawal was because it had no confidence in ODIEC conducting a credible and fair election.

Action Alliance (AA); All Progressives Congress (APC); Labour Party (LP);  Action Peoples Party (APP); New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP); Boot Party (BP); and Social Democratic Party (SDP) participated in the election.

Other parties are Zenith Labour Party (ZLP); Young Progressive Party (YPP); All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA); National Rescue Movement (NRM); and Action Democratic Party (ADP).
