Delta APC chieftain opens up on internal crisis

Dr Tonye Timi, a chieftain of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta, has blamed internal crisis rocking the state chapter on failure of the leadership to prioritise collaboration and inclusivity.

Timi said this in an interview on Thursday in Abuja. According to him, the Delta APC’s internal conflicts serve as a cautionary tale of what happens when leadership fails to prioritise collaboration and inclusivity.

“The Berlin Conference of 1884, for all its moral failings, underscores the importance of structured dialogue and compromise in managing competing interests.

The APC chieftain further said that the Berlin Conference exemplified a quid pro quo approach.

“After rounds of negotiations, handshakes, and the clinking of glasses, European leaders left with their interests secured.

“Their actions, though morally questionable, ensured relative peace among European nations and maximised their collective exploitation of Africa’s resources,” he said.

“Delta APC leaders would do well to emulate this approach setting aside egos and personal ambitions to prioritise the collective good of the party.

“Only then can they hope to achieve their political goals and remain relevant in the state’s political equation,” he said.

The former lawmaker, who represented the Patani Constituency in the state House of Assembly also said that the internal dynamics of the state APC presented a perplexing scenario that raised questions about leadership.

“For a neutral observer, the ongoing infighting marked by power struggles and seemingly endless squabbles begs the question: what exactly is at stake?

“Is it resources, authority, influence, or power? In spite of the intensity of these internal conflicts, the battle lines and key players remain ambiguous, and the constant refrain of “control of structure” seems devoid of clarity.

“One must ask, to what end is this structure being contested amid such disorder,” he said.

He said the ongoing power struggle within the Delta APC lacks even this rudimentary sense of structure and purpose.

He said instead of engaging in constructive dialogue or reaching compromises, the party had become a battlefield of chaos.

“Leaders and factions wrestle for control of ‘structures’ but the question remains: control to what end? Without a clear agenda, their infighting risks not only internal disarray but also consistent failure at the ballot box.

“Delta APC’s leaders must recognise that their shared goals whether it is political dominance or policy influence can only be achieved through collaboration.

“Sitting at a round table to discuss areas of influence, roles, and responsibilities could pave the way for lasting peace and a stronger, more unified party,’’ he said.

Timi said there was the need for leaders of the party to understand that persistent squabble only guarantees electoral failures.

  • Confusion in HoR as another LP member defects to APC

Confusion in HoR as another LP member defects to APC

There was confusion in the House of Representatives on Thursday during plenary, as opposition members protested the defection of another Labour Party (LP) member to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The lawmaker, representing Jos South/Jos East Federal Constituency of Plateau State, announced his defection, prompting opposition members to demand that his seat be declared vacant.

Tis defection, brings the total number of Labour Party members joining the ruling APC to six within a week, witnessed by former Plateau State Governor, Senator Simon Lalong.

In his letter of defection, read by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, the lawmaker cited internal crises in the Labour Party and his desire to align with the policies and developmental goals of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led APC government.

He stated, “I believe my decision to offer effective representation to my constituency can be better achieved within the APC. My defection is not for personal gain but to contribute to national development and peacebuilding.”

Deputy Minority Whip George Ozodinobi, while not opposing the defection, remarked, “Even though there is no crisis in the LP, I don’t want to repeat myself. I wish those defecting good luck. We’ll meet again in 2027, and the end will justify the means.”

Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda, PDP , Obio/Akpor Fed Constituency, however, rejected the defection, stating: “The letter of defection should not be accepted because the lawmaker has not fulfilled constitutional provisions. He should first join the APC at his ward level before submitting his defection letter to the House and facing the consequences.”

Chinda accused the House of accepting the defection prematurely, and said, “The House is putting the cart before the horse by accepting the letter without following constitutional procedures.”

In response, Yusuf Adamu Gagdi (APC, Plateau) defended the defection, arguing that the lawmaker had fulfilled all constitutional requirements. He added, “Section 40 of the Constitution allows anyone to form or join a political party. Out of the eight House members from Plateau State, seven are now in the APC.”

Mark Esset (PDP, Akwa Ibom) urged lawmakers to uphold the Constitution, he said, “As parliamentarians, we must show Nigerians that we respect the law by correctly applying its provisions.”

Former Deputy Speaker Ahmed Idris Wase supported the Speaker’s acceptance of the defection letter, cautioning against using inappropriate language in Parliament.

He said, “The Speaker acted within the law in accepting the letter.”

The session ended without resolving the dispute over the legality of the defection.

Real reason Ibori’s daughter left PDP for APC revealed

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Dr Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe, has said that the defection of Chief James Ibori’s daughter, Hon Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu, was foreseeable and never a surprise to the good people of Delta State.

He made the assertion when he was asked to comment on the defection of the former PDP member representing Ethiope Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives, Hon Erhiatake Ibori, assuring that her exit from the party is grossly inconsequential, a big relief and a good omen that was long awaited.

The Orientation and Communications Bureau Director General, further disclosed that  PDP political structures in Ethiope Federal Constituency is solid, unshakable, members are united, and shall deliver the party effortlessly in the forthcoming general elections, and more particularly the governorship election.

He noted that prior to 2023 presidential and National Assembly elections, Chief James Ibori invited leaders of Ethiope Federal Constituency to his country home in Oghara where he assured leaders of PDP that his daughter, Hon Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu should be allowed one tenure to complete the two tenure slots of Ethiope West LGA, so that Ethiope East can take her turn in 2027 under the irrevocable internal power rotation agreement in Delta PDP.

Oghenesivbe, who was a campaign spokesperson for Delta PDP in 2023 general elections, pointed out that Ethiope East agreed to Chief Ibori’s proposal and thereafter delivered his daughter clean and clear in a transparent, free and fair election, noting that Hon Erhiatake Ibor ‘s defection to the opposition party in the state was a deliberate attempt to truncate the promise made by Chief Ibori, so as to return his daughter for a second tenure, so as to shortchange Ethiope East LGA in 2027.

He assured that Chief Ibori’s daughter will obviously face political brick walls within and outside their party in 2027, as.PDP is poised to clinch overwhelming victory under the political leadership of the state governor, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, adding that the enviable performance of the ruling party in the state through the instrumentality of the MORE agenda would resonate with the people at the polls.

“The defection of Hon Erhiatake Ibori suffered unexplainable delays for obvious reasons. The political calculation by Chief Ibori camp was that they can eat their cake and have it after the 2023 general elections. But alas, the reverse was the case.

“They (Chief Ibori Camp) have now decided to opt out of PDP instalmentally. We clearly understand their politics of one leg in and one leg out, the Weysom Wike style.

“We.lost Ethiope West to the opposition party in the House of Assembly in 2023 due to the political deceit of some political actors whose one leg is in PDP and the other leg in the major opposition party in the state, some people call it smart anti party politics, just like what Chief Wike is doing in Rivers State at the moment.

“The video clips of 2023 governorship election in Oghara is still in the archive. At the appropriate time we shall do the needful,  it’s not yet time for 2027 electioneering politics.

“Deltans are not surprised that Erhiatake Ibori defected to the major opposition party. They knew it will come and here we are. The coast is now very clear for all to see and appreciate. PDP will never miss Hon Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu, rather we foresee her returning to PDP after 2027 general elections,” Oghenesivbe assured.

Okocha was elected at the party’s Delegates’ Congress held on Saturday in Port Harcourt. He was elected alongside other State Working Committee members to run the affairs of the party for four years.

In an acceptance speech, Okocha said that the congress had proved that APC is united and peaceful.

He said that with the mandate given to him and other executive members, the party would take over governance in Rivers in 2027.

He said: “I’m sure you are seeing the indices and the variables already. Those who said APC cannot conduct elections lied.

  • What PDP must do to rescue Nigeria from APC’s vicious grip – Bode George

What PDP must do to rescue Nigeria from APC’s vicious grip – Bode George

Chief Bode George, a former Deputy National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), says all is not well with the former ruling party because of selfish interests.

George, who made this remark at a news conference to commemorate his 79th birthday on Thursday in Lagos, said that PDP members and leaders must use the forthcoming National Convention to rescue the party.

“As a loyal party man who lives, thinks, talks, breathes and defends PDP, I have never left this party since it was formed; so today gives me a great opportunity to deliberate on the future of our party.

“Even as elders of the party are preparing to meet on Nov. 28 in Abuja to chart the way forward, I owe it a duty to declare openly that all is not well with our party. In fact, our party is derailing.

“This is unfortunate because the crisis in our party has further complicated the present tragedy in the socio-economic indices of our dear nation.

“I am raising the alarm today that our party is at the precipice of a dangerous looming crisis, if pending critical party issues are not urgently addressed,” he said.

George, a life member of the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT), said that while the party leadership was trying its best to ensure all members had a sense of belonging, some ‘desperados’ were doing everything possible to thwart their efforts.

Calling for a united PDP, George said that the party’s founding fathers who had gone to the world beyond would be crying in their graves because PDP has become “a shadow of itself due to selfish interests of some members”.

He described as disheartening and pitiable, a situation where some pretentious members, were already working for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the build-up to the 2027 elections.

“They have one leg in PDP and another leg in APC. Such chameleonic characters are the ones trying to dictate the direction of this party.

“In the name of everything that is dear to our great party, this pretension must be stopped immediately by patriotic members of this party.

“Since the first elective convention of our party in 1999 when PDP was handed over to some of us as national officers, we have never had it this bad.

“If the PDP must rescue Nigerians from the vicious grip of APC in 2027, this must be a major agenda during our NEC meeting in Abuja,” George said.

Expressing belief that PDP was the only party that could save Nigeria, George said that the party must be ready to seize the opportunity to move the country forward.

According to him, the party must not allow disloyal elements to continue to use the platform for their selfish interests, saying “disloyalty is a very grave offence”.

He added: “Unless we are united, with equity, fairness and justice being the pedestal for any political decision taken, this party will be heading to disaster in 2027.

“If we want to win the 2027 presidential election, we should not allow ourselves to be divided and those with divisive tendencies should be told in clear language that ‘Enough is Enough’.

“We must change the narratives now so that we don’t embark on a suicide mission, a self-destructive journey for our party in 2027.

“With the suffering in the land and the mismanagement of the economy, Nigerians are waiting for us in 2027 to kick APC out of Aso Rock.”

He urged the party members and leaders from the North to the South to use the forthcoming PDP’s 99th National Executive Committee meeting as golden opportunity before the next general elections in 2027, “to bury our differences and put on our thinking caps.”

According to him, the party should do everything humanly possible to ensure that the PDP does not go into the dustbin of history in 2027.

On political crisis in Rivers and the feud between Gov. Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor and Minister of FCT, Mr Nyesom Wike, the PDP leaders urged Wike to “cool off immediately”.

Urging party leaders not to treat Fubara like an outcast, George called on all party leaders to rise up in defence of the general interest of the party and sanity.

“We should not allow the collective unity of this party to be fragmented. How we collectively address the issues at stake will be a major determinant of the fate of this party in months and years to come.

“It is our determination to ensure that the PDP returns to the Presidential Villa in Abuja on May 29, 2027 but, we can only go back to Aso Rock if we are united, not divided.

He urged party elders such as Bamanga Tukur, Jim Nwobodo, Ahmadu Ali, Prof. Jerry Gana, Jonah Jang, Peter Odili, James Ibori, former President Goodluck Jonathan and ex-Vice President Namadi Sambo to rise up to the challenges.

The PDP chieftain also urged Victor Attah, Donald Duke, Okwesilieze Nwodo, Ibrahim Shema, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Saka Balogun, Ebenezer Babatope, Bello Haliru, Sen. Adolphus Wabara, Ahmed Makarfi and others not to keep quiet.

George called on the Chairman of the PDP BoT to invite all the afore mentioned elders for a meeting on the way forward before the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.

“We cannot afford to fail and disappoint our founding fathers. Let me state categorically that, Nigerians are waiting for us in 2027 but we must put our house in order.

“As leaders, we must not allow anybody to destroy our party because PDP is the only true national party.

The event was attended by some PDP chieftains and members in the state including the 2023 Governorship Candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Gbadebo Rhodes- Vivour.
