BREAKING: Court nullifies Imo APC congresses, orders fresh polls

The presiding judge, Justice Lewis Allagoa, in a judgment that lasted for one hour, ordered APC “to be responsible, save our democracy by conducting free and fair congresses in Imo State.”

The judge who dismissed a motion filed by the defendants, insisted that his court had jurisdiction to hear the matter.

He said that the exhibits tendered by the plaintiffs suggesting that there was no ward congress in the state on May 5, “was factual.”

Allagoa also said that the recorded “press interview between the state commissioner of police, the state governor, Rochas Okorocha and Senator Osita Izunaso that there was no APC ward congress in Imo State on May 5 “was justiciable in law.”

The Judge also cited a report of the Independent National Electoral Commission, which confirmed that there was no APC ward congress in Imo State on May 5.

The judge said, “APC should go and be responsible and save our democracy. The defendants and the plaintiffs are members of the same political party, APC. There is no victor, no vanquished.”

The plaintiffs, who are a faction of the party loyal to the state governor, had approached the court seeking, among other things, a “declaration that the ward congress of the APC in Imo State which was fixed for May 5 was inconclusive and did not hold, since there was no result therefrom.

2019: Why we left APC to form R-APC – Galadima

A group within Nigeria’s ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC), has created a splinter faction named, Reformed All Progressives Congress (R-APC) and accused President Muhammadu Buhari of failing to deliver his campaign promises in 2015.

The group is believed to have the backing of key leaders of the party including the Senate President Bukola Saraki; Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara; and a former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso.

Although the three men have not openly associated with the new faction, they have also not denied their association with it.

On Wednesday, the faction, which named itself “Reformed APC” briefed journalists in Abuja.

We are sad to report that after more than three years of governance, our hopes have been betrayed, our expectations completely dashed,” Buba Galadima, one of the leaders of the faction said.

The APC has run a rudderless, inept and incompetent government that has failed to deliver good governance to the Nigerian people. It has rather imposed dictatorship, impunity, abuse of power, complete abdication of constitutional and statutory responsibilities, infidelity to the rule of law and constitutionalism.”

The press briefing was also attended by Kawu Baraje, a former Peoples Democratic Party leader who led some disgruntled members of the PDP, then called nPDP, into the APC in the build up to the 2015 election. The members of the nPDP then included Messrs Saraki, Dogara and Kwankwaso.

PRESS CONFERENCE ADDRESSED BY ALHAJI BUBA GALADIMA, NATIONAL CHAIRMAN, REFORMED – ALL PROGRESSIVES CONGRESS (R-APC) AT SHERATON HOTELS ABUJA ON 4TH JULY, 2018

We are here assembled to address you on the state of our party, the APC, the state of the nation and the future of our experiment in constitutional democracy, in Nigeria.

    2. You will recall that in the build up to the 2015 General elections, some political parties and groups came together, and formed a brand new political party, the All Progressives Congress, APC. This merger was based on the strong belief that Nigeria had come of age, but was severely underperforming and unable to meet its potentials for good governance. The Nigerian people entrusted power to the APC based on its promises and potentials.

    3. We are sad to report that after more than three years of governance, our hopes have been betrayed, our expectations completely dashed. The APC has run a rudderless, inept and incompetent government that has failed to deliver good governance to the Nigerian people. It has rather imposed dictatorship, impunity, abuse of power, complete abdication of constitutional and statutory responsibilities, infidelity to the rule of law and constitutionalism. It has failed to ensure the security and welfare of our people and elevated nepotism to unacceptable height. The APC has failed to deliver on its key promises to the nation. There is no evidence of any political will to reverse the decline of our party, while leaders who have created these circumstances continue to behave as if Nigerians owe our party votes as a matter of right.

    4. The APC government, has been a monumental disaster, even worse than the government it replaced. The political party that was a vehicle for enthroning the government was rendered powerless by manipulations and complete lack of due process in its operations.

    5. The last straw, was the Congresses and Convention of the APC held recently. The Congresses were intensely disputed as it was conducted with impunity, total disregard for due process, disregard for the party Constitution and naked display of power and practices that have no place in a party we all worked the very hard to put in place.

    6. There are countless cases in courts all over the country challenging the legality of congresses and even the National Convention itself. It is very likely that the judicial decisions on these cases will result in massive chaos, confusion and uncertainties. The fate of a party in this state with a few months to the elections is best left to the imagination, but it is not a fate we believe our millions of members should be abandoned to. There were parallel congresses in 24 States namely: Abia, Adamawa, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Enugu, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Niger, Ondo, Oyo, Rivers, Sokoto and Zamfara.

These congresses in Wards, Local Government Areas and States all over the federation produced different sets of delegates. We therefore had an unfortunate situation where the party has been seriously factionalised and divided in not just 24 States but the 36 States and Abuja FCT.

    7. The so-called National Convention of the APC was even worse. The National Convention of the party was ridiculed with constitutional infirmities that were so glaring and obvious that no fair minded person can claim that a legitimate and lawful executive emerged from that process. The Chairman of the organising Committee, Jigawa State Governor, His Excellency, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, declared 18 seats unopposed and uncontested, since only one valid candidate stood at the end of the grossly manipulated nomination exercise for each of the offices. He therefore proceeded to declare them duly elected in flagrant abuse and violence to the Constitution of the APC.

Indeed, Article 20 of the APC Constitution is very clear and explicit. It envisages a situation where if at the close of nomination, only one person is nominated, the Convention must vote “Yes” or “No”, for each candidate before he is declared duly elected. For the avoidance of doubt, let us re-produce the article verbatim:

Article 20 (1) of the APC Constitution states “Unless otherwise provided for: All party posts prescribed or implied by this Constitution shall be filled by democratically conducted elections at the respective National Convention or Congress subject, where possible, to consensus, Provided that where a Candidate has emerged by consensus for an elective position, a vote of “Yes” or “No” by ballot or voice shall be called, to ensure that it was not an imposition which could breed discontent and crisis”.

We all witnessed on live television and at the venue, Eagles Square Abuja, that the Convention Chairman, only put the “Yes” question to all the delegates, using words to the effect: Do you affirm? Do you agree? There was no opportunity whatsoever given to the delegates to say whether they are voting “No” for any candidate as the “No” question was never put to them.

It may well be that it the convention Chairman put the “No” Question, the voice vote for the “Noes”, may have been more. We will never know, since it was never done, contrary to the express provisions of the APC Constitution. It is therefore unquestionably clear that the 18 officers of APC that was “Elected” through this process could not have been duly elected. This constitutional vice infected the offices of:

    1. Comrade Adams Oshiomhole – National Chairman
    2. Mai Mala Buni – National Secretary
    3. Alhaji Ibrahim Masari – National Welfare Secretary
    4. Tunde Bello – National Financial Secretary
    5. Babatunde Ogala – National Legal Adviser
    6. Bankole Oluwajana – National Vice Chairman (South West)
    7. Dr. Zakari Mohammed – Zonal Secretary (North Central)
    8. Abubakar Sadiq – Zonal Secretary (North East)
    9. Hassana Abdullahi – Zonal Woman Leader (North Central)
    10. Nelson Abba – Ex-officio (North-Central)
    11. Isa Azare – Ex-officio (North-East)
    12. Tukur Gusau – Zonal Secretary (North West)
    13. Nasiru Haladu – Ex-officio (North-West)
    14. Rachael Akpabio – Zonal Woman Leader (South South)
    15. Misbahu L. Didi – Representative of the physically challenged
    and others.

    8. Even before these illegal exercises that have alienated millions of members, there has been widespread disenchantment with the manner the party has been run, and the conduct and performance of our governments. The nPDP, a group that has made a major contribution to the emergence of the APC administration has made strenuous efforts to invite attention to inequities, injustice and poor management in our party without any success. The nPDP had shown good faith and commitment to the party, but it has been rewarded with indifference and even contempt. It is obvious that the leadership of the APC has decided to shut out members of the APC, as well as other members who have raised genuine grievances and a desire to improve the responsiveness of the APC to the desire of members for a party founded on democratic principles.

    9. Under the circumstances, patriotic elements and most of the original founders of the APC have found themselves in the opposing side of this charade. Most of the delegates who bought and paid for forms for the congresses and convention and were elected as delegates have come together to take control and give legitimacy to APC to be now known as and called REFORMED-APC (R-APC).

The R-APC as constituted have officers in all the wards, 774 Local Governments, and all the 36 States of the Federation including the FCT.

The R-APC also have National Executive Committee, the National Working Committee and other organs of the Party are properly constituted and functional.

    12. The R-APC, will work with like-minded political parties and groups to offer Nigeria qualitative good governance in 2019. Nigeria faces an existential threat arising from three years of near destruction of this country and the exacerbation of our ethnic, religious and divisive cleavages. We will in concert with others offer real change to Nigeria. Not fake change. It is clear that our party needs a leadership that will live by its founding ideals. We have therefore decided to legitimately lead those members to work to rebuild our nation more firmly on genuine democratic principles, to enshrine good governance and restore the faith of Nigerians in the possibility of the existence of a prosperous, secure and peaceful nation

  • 2019: Too late for Oshiomhole to save APC, party already sinking – Shehu Sani

    …hints of dumping party soon

Senator Shehu Sani (APC, Kaduna) has revealed plans by aggrieved members of the ruling All Progressives Congress in Kaduna State to leave the party.

He told reporters in Abuja, on Tuesday, that the new APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole assumed office at a time it had become too late to reconcile them with the party.

Sani said, “I wish Adams has come earlier because like I said these grenades that were laid by the former chairman will explode in a matter of days.”

According to him, party leaders including President Muhammadu Buhari have proved incapable of handling the crisis.

The Senator explained that the ward, local government and state congresses in Kaduna were flawed and that complaints he and other party members lodged were ignored by the Chief John Odigie-Oyegun-led National Working Committee.

He noted that to further compound am already bad situation, the immediate past party leadership went ahead to inaugurate the executive committee’s which emerged from the flawed congresses.

Sani said, “It is also very clear to us that even President Muhammadu Buhari is incapable of tackling the menace of the governor of Kaduna state.

How can a governor, openly called for violence against Senators and not a statement came from the seat of power cautioning such a governor?

How can a governor move bulldozers and demolish a house of a fellow party member, the one who helped him to be where he is and there is not even a statement from the presidency?

The governor uses the machinery of the state to emasculate political opponents. He even framed me for murder and there was no statement that came from the presidency to caution such a governor.

Virtually Kaduna state under governor El-Rufai does not create conducive environment for any of us to remain in that party (APC).”

The Senator also said, “There were three attempts to resolve the Kaduna APC crisis; there was Inuwa Abdulkadir committee which was never respected by the governor, there was the governor Masari- led committee which was also not respected and there as you can see, Tinubu’s attempt to reconcile members of the party was simply naturalized and abandoned. So we are not slaves to continue to be in that party.

  • 2019: APC has not failed Nigerians – Ndume

2019: APC has not failed Nigerians – Ndume

A federal lawmaker, Sen. Ali Ndume, has said that concerns that the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government has failed Nigerians were unfounded.

Ndume, who represents Borno South Senatorial District, made this known at the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Forum in Abuja.

He said that the government was working hard to deliver on its promises and should be commended and not condemned.

The lawmaker said that while he was not making excuses for the party, efforts at repositioning the country were being intensified.

“The APC has problems like every other party and particularly because it is a combination of many parties that came together to wrestle power from PDP.

“I am not using that as an excuse, but the people criticising APC are the people that destroyed Nigeria, abused and vandalised Nigeria for 16 years.

“When the previous government came into power, yes, there was armed robbery problem but it was minimal.

“There was no kidnapping, Boko Haram and no farmers-herders clash. Even, communal clashes then were not frequent.

“Buhari said he will address three things – insecurity, infrastructural decay and corruption.

While we will not say we have gotten there yet, we are working hard.

“Some of the challenges faced by this government are pure criminality and we should not politicise the issue by associating it with the APC,” he said.

Ndume said that Nigeria was lucky to have Buhari as president, adding that he was doing all within constitutional provisions to pull the country out of the quagmire it found itself.

He stated that the president was being admired by Nigerians, contrary to beliefs that he was being reprimanded by the people for under-performance.

“If you go to Wuse Market and start criticising this government, I don’t think you will come back alive.

“For instance, Charly Boy, convener of ‘Our Mumu Don Do’ carried his agitation too far. He went to Wuse Market and the masses chased him away,” he recalled.

The lawmaker urged the media to distance themselves from reports that were capable of causing tension in the country.

  • Court fixes date to hear suit challenging Adamawa APC Congress

Court fixes date to hear suit challenging Adamawa APC Congress

Justice Abdul-Azeez Waziri of Yola High Court on Tuesday fixed July 16 to hear the suit challenging the conduct of the All Progressives Congress (APC) congresses in Adamawa.

Recall that some aggrieved members of APC led by Mr Dimas Ezra and three others went to the court seeking a declaration that the party’s congresses never held in the state.

Joined in the suit are the APC and the newly elected state executives of the party in the state.

The judge, who was delivering ruling on a motion by the plaintiffs, agreed that all the defendants within and outside the state could be served through substituted means or by pasting.

He, however, struck out the request to stop the new state executive members of the party from attending the national convention of the party in Abuja, as it was belated.

  • Governorship aspirant sweet-talks Oshiomhole’s APC leadership

Governorship aspirant sweet-talks Oshiomhole’s APC leadership

A governorship aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Senator Magnus Ngei Abe, has expressed the hope that the party is now better positioned and poised to overcome its challenges following the emergence of former Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole as its new National Chairman.

Abe stated this while speaking to newsmen in Port Harcourt shortly after his arrival from Bera, his hometown in Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State where a mammoth crowd of supporters were on hand to receive him at a reception organized in his honour.

He expressed joy that the APC can now boast of a national leadership that is committed to the ideals and core values of the party where members will find a common ground to work together ahead of the 2019 general elections.

Abe, who is also the Senator representing Rivers South-East Senatorial District in the National Assembly, commended members of the APC in Rivers State for the enthusiasm and commitment they displayed during the convention, despite the challenges facing the party in the state.

He said, “I am very happy to be home after the convention and I want to use this opportunity to appreciate all members of the All Progressives Congress for their enthusiasm and commitment to the party despite the challenges facing our great party in Rivers State.

“They were in Abuja in their numbers; I am happy the convention is over and we have a brand new executive of the party that is committed to the ideals and core values of the APC.

“We believe that all members of the party will find common ground and work together so that we can begin to face the challenges before the party in the coming months.

“The new leadership of the party has said that they will be committed to truth, justice and inclusion to make sure that all members of the party have an opportunity to fully participate in the programmes of the party. The national chairman said so.

“And I think that is what this new executive is committed to. They will not humiliate somebody to please another. As far as I am concerned, Rivers State is ripe”.

Abe, who is the Chairman, Senate Committee on Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA), reiterated his resolve to contest the 2019 governorship election in Rivers State on the platform of the APC.

He said, “Let me say it now; what I have said as often as the issue has come up, I am going to contest the primaries of the governorship of Rivers State on the platform of the All Progressives Congress.

“My dream and vision is that we must be in a position to offer Rivers people a chance to choose between choices.”

  • 2019: Saraki’s Chief of Staff dumps APC for ‘grossly underperforming’

2019: Saraki’s Chief of Staff dumps APC for ‘grossly underperforming’

The Chief of Staff to Senate President, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, on Monday formally defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Ahmed said his decision to leave the ruling party was solely his and have nothing to do with the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki.

He described his decision to leave APC as a difficult one.

He said he took the decision after due consultation with members of his Akida faction of APC in Kaduna.

Recall that the Akida faction of the APC in Kaduna has been at loggerheads with the Governor Nasir El-Rufai led faction.

Consequently, all three senators Shehu Sani (Kaduna Central), Sulieman Hukunyi (Kaduna North), and Danjuma Leah (Kaduna South) representing Kaduna State on floor of the Senate are from the Akida faction.

Baba-Ahmed, while addressing journalists in Kaduna on Monday, said he has sent a letter of withdrawal from APC to the party chairman in his ward.

He explained that he was not leaving APC to join another party but believes the ruling party has underperformed.

“This statement is to inform the public of my resignation from APC. I have sent a formal letter to this effect to chairman of my ward.

“This has been a very difficult decision, to leave a party I helped to form and made my humble contributions to put in power.

“After three years, however, I need to say that the APC has grossly under-performed and has forfeited any claim to my loyalty and continue membership.

“I do not believe in all conscience, that it should be trusted and encouraged to continue to govern our great country beyond 2019.

“I am not leaving to join another party. This is my decision and mine alone. It has nothing to do with the president of the Senate Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki.

“It’s a decision taken after due consultations with Akida Group, a group that has predated my appointment as chief of staff to the President of the Senate.

“I will remain active in politics, as this is the main avenue for salvaging our nation from rising insecurity, poverty and bitter divisions,” he said.

Baba-Ahmed is a former chairman of the APC in Kaduna as well as a former chairman of the now defunct Congress for Progressives Change (CPC).

He thanked the APC for the opportunities he had to chair CPC and APC in Kaduna State.

He was appointed by Saraki as Chief of Staff in 2017.

  • Ekiti guber: APC picks Egbeyemi as Fayemi’s running mate

The Former Executive Chairman of Ado-Ekiti Local Government in Ekiti State, Adebisi Adegboyega Egbeyemi, has been nominated as the deputy governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State.

Egbeyemi was picked as the candidate after party leaders met for long hours to consider who is best suited to pair with former Governor and immediate past Minister of Mines an Steel Development, Dr Kayode Fayemi, to fly the party’s flag in the governorship contest.

Egbeyemi’s choice came after speculations by the expectant public spread that certain eminent indigenes of the state had been picked to fly the ticket with Fayemi in the July 14, 2018 governorship poll.

He is an indigene of Ado-Ekiti, born on May 8, 1944, to the family of the late Egbeyemi Alade and late Madam Tinubu Egbeyemi.

Egbeyemi started his education at the Holy Trinity Anglican School, Ilawe-Ekiti and Baptist School, Ado-Ekiti, after which he attended Harding Memorial Modern School, Ado-Ekiti.

He studied privately while working as a Laboratory Assistant at Ekitiparapo College, Ido-Ekiti, and while working as a bursar at Notre Dame Grammar School, Usi-Ekiti, Egbeyemi sat as a private student to pass both the GCE O’Level and Advanced Level examinations.

He later proceeded to the University of Lagos College of Education where he graduated in Biology and Physical Education with distinction. He taught briefly at the St Mary’s Girls Secondary School, Ikole-Ekiti, in 1975 before he was transferred to the Teachers’ College, Oye-Ekiti, as a pioneer Physical Education tutor between 1975 and 1977.

He later went to the University of Ife to read Law between 1977 and 1980 before proceeding to the Law School in Lagos for his Barrister at Law certificate and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1981 as a Solicitor and Advocate of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

His political experiences spanned many fields, including the Youth Leader of the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) between 1979 and 1983; a member of the Ondo State House of Assembly in 1983; and Executive Chairman of Ado-Ekiti Local Government between 1991 and 1993.

Others include Leader of the United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP) in Ado-Ekiti Local Government between 1996 and 1997 and were founding member of the Alliance for Democracy (AD), using the platform to win the House of Representatives election that was cancelled by the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, in 1998.

Between 1991 and 1992, he was Commissioner of Education and between 2001 and 2002, Egbeyemi was a member of the Governing Council of the National Teachers’ Institute, Kaduna.

  • 2019: PDP okays President Buhari Democracy Day statement

The Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) says Nigerians have noted and accepted President Muhammadu Buhari’s declaration, on Tuesday, that Nigerians should vote for candidates of their choice, come 2019.

The PDP notes that the President made this important declaration after his thorough assessment of his diminished popularity among Nigerians due to his poor performance in the last three years.

“Though Nigerians, on their own, have since reached a consensus not to support President Buhari’s re-election bid in 2019, it is good that President Buhari, by himself, admitted this fact, hence this declaration.

“President Buhari has seen the flow of our nation’s political tides and the PDP urges him to show statesmanship by reining-in his cronies to shed their desperation and lust for power, which will, in any case, be firmly resisted by Nigerians,” the party said in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan.

The PDP also charges “the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), particularly the blood relatives of President Buhari in INEC, as well as security agencies to note the determination of Nigerians; their desire for another President, come 2019 and as such desist from any act that will pitch them against the people.

“It is imperative to note that the APC is already stuck with an unpopular candidate and PDP remains open as the only credible democratic platform for all Nigerians across board to rally and produce that truly Nigerian President of their choice.

“The PDP therefore urges all democrats, in all political formations and alignments across the country to come together on the repositioned PDP to actualize the wishes and aspirations of Nigerians for a president that genuinely cares and truly have the capacity and competence to restore our nation to the path of good governance, peace, national cohesion, equity and economic prosperity”.

  • Court annuls Rivers APC congresses

A High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, on Wednesday annulled the congresses of the All Progressives Congress held in the state.

Recall that the APC had gone ahead to hold the ward, local government, and state congresses in May despite a court order that the exercise should not hold.

Some aggrieved members of the APC had gone to court to seek redress, claiming that some of them were not allowed to participate in the exercise, among other claims.

However, the State High Court issued an interlocutory injunction stopping the party from using the result of the Congress on May 5, 2018, to hold the LG congress of the party on the 12th of May.

Also, the leadership of the party at the national level had sent in a letter, which was signed by its Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, instructing that the congresses should hold on May 19, 20 and 21, 2018.

A new Chairman of the Rivers State APC, Mr. Ojukaye Amachree, had emerged through the process.

But Justice Chinwendu Nwogu of the State High Court, after listening to the arguments of the counsel for the aggrieved APC members, Henry Bello, and the defence counsel, Tuduru Edeh, observed that there was no evidence to indicate that an appeal had been entered on the matter, especially as it concerned the order that the congresses should not be conducted.

Nwogu described as academic the cancellation of the state APC congress results held on May 5 and 12 and postponement of the same congresses to May 19, 20 and 21, 2018.

He said it was wrong for the APC to disobey the court order, even as he recalled that the party attempted to no avail to lock the gate of the court.
