The Southeast leadership of the ruling All Progressives Congress has endorsed Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State as the leader of the Southeast Zonal Campaign Council of President Muhammadu Buhari’s 2019 re-election bid.

They also agreed to work together for both the success of Buhari and party in other elections in the zone.

This was the outcome of the party’s meeting on Sunday night at the Abuja Lodge of the Imo State Governor.

In a release signed by Okorocha’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Sam Onwuemeodo on Monday, the APC Southeastern leaders agreed to set up Buhari’s campaign organisation in the zone, with Okorocha as the leader, while similar structures would be set up in the other four southeastern states.

The release partly read, “The Southeast APC leaders have resolved that they would not allow the fate that had befallen APC in the zone in 2015 to repeat itself in 2019.”

The meeting, which was said to have lasted for hours, ended on a convivial note.

  • PDP will welcome Shehu Sani if APC rejects him – Ben Bruce

The Senator representing Bayelsa East constituency, Ben Murray-Bruce has said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will gladly open its door for a colleague senator; Shehu Sani (representing Kaduna Central Senatorial district), if the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) expels him.

The lawmaker, who is a member of the PDP, took to his official twitter handle to laud Mr. Sani’s intellect, describing him as a specimen of patriotism.

His comment followed a communique issued on Saturday by chairpersons of the APC in the six local governments that make up Kaduna Central Senatorial district.

The chairmen endorsed a rival aspirant and political adviser to Gov. Nasir El-Rufai, Uba Sani, for the 2019 senatorial ticket.

Mr. Sani described the rejection as ‘antics’ by the governor.

He said the governor resorted to organising ‘fake’ endorsement meeting after repeatedly failing to suspend him from the party.

He added that the people of his constituency are ‘solidly’ behind him irrespective of the governor’s move.

“Senator @ShehuSani is an asset to Nigeria and a pride to the @NGRSenate. I have traveled all over Nigeria and very few Nigerians can match his intellect,” Mr. Ben-Bruce tweeted.

“If APC doesn’t want him, the @OfficialPDPNig wants him. Nigeria wants him. Democracy needs him. He’s a specimen of patriotism!.”

Mr. Bruce further praised Nigeria’s diaspora for remitting $22 billion in 2017.

“Nigeria’s diaspora remitted $22 billion to Nigeria in 2017. That is almost Kenya’s entire budget for 2018. Our diaspora is the single largest source of FDI into Nigeria. Help me lobby your Senator as I push for a Constitutional amendment to enable them vote in future elections”, he said.

  • Herdsmen attacks: APDA rejects establishment of cattle colonies, vows to dislodge APC in 2019

The Advanced People’s Democratic Alliance (APDA) has urged the Federal Government to opt for establishment of grazing reserves as a strategy to address herdsmen/farmers clashes.

The National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Mohammed Shittu, gave the advice in a telephone interview.

Shittu said that grazing reserves would promote peace between farmers and herders and boost the economies of states.

He urged the government not to consider creating cattle colonies which, he said, were alien.

“We hear of a plan by the Federal Government to create cattle colonies where herders can breed their cattle to stop clashes.

“We advise that the government should rather establish grazing reserves not only to achieve peace but to promote development in states.

“Cattle colonies are alien to our Constitution. Some people might take the word “colony” to mean dominance or occupation.

“Grazing reserves can be used by all herders whether they are Fulani or not, and it can go a long way to boost the economies of states,” he said.

He urged the government to let states know the economic value of grazing reserves, particularly its impact on food security.

Shittu condemned the recent killings in Benue, Taraba and some other states but advised that the killings should not be attributed to all Fulani herdsmen in Nigeria.

He said that trans-border criminals might be hiding under Fulani herdsmen to unleash terror on innocent Nigerians.

Shittu said that cattle’s rearing was a viable business all over the world, and that Nigeria could earn much forex from it.

He urged the government to toe the line of Botswana and the Netherlands earning huge revenues from cattle export though massive investment in cattle breeding.

On the 2019 elections, Shittu said that the party had begun preparations to succeed.

He said that although the party was new, it had presence across the country and would do well in the elections.

“It is wrong for anyone to see APDA as a party that can’t dislodge the APC.

  • 2019: Buhari meets APC leaders, insists ‘Nobody can force me to do anything’

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday met with leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja and stated why he is ‘not in a hurry to anything’

The president said he prefers to seriously reflect on issues placed before him and ensure that his conscience had been satisfied prior to granting approval.

“I decided to drop the uniform and come back here (to be President of Nigeria), so I have gone through it over and over again. This is why I am not in a hurry to do anything. I will sit and reflect, and continue to (operate) with my clear conscience,” Mr. Buhari said during a Thursday afternoon meeting with his party leaders and supporters which was covered by Channels TV in Abuja.

“I had to invite you to let us eat together and I tell you that I am sitting here very much aware of the problem in this country. I will always reflect on historical antecedents,” the president added.

Recall that President Buhari was recently criticised from wide and near for his policies since assuming power and handling of the killings by Fulani herdsmen across the country in particular.

Opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) also joined in the criticisms insisting that the president was insensitive to the plight of Nigerians.

  • Tambuwal appoints first female professor, Madawaki as commissioner

Gov. Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State on Tuesday sworn-in the first female professor in the state, Prof. A’ishatu Madawaki, with three others as commissioners into the state executive council.

Madawaki, is a professor of Educational Psychology at Usmanu Danfodio University and was inaugurated along with Ahmed Barade, Garba Tsitse and Bello Ambarura.

Tambuwal also swore in a former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Umar Bature and a former Rector of the state Polytechnic, Dr Bello Alkali as Special Advisers, while Alhaji Bello Buba was sworn as the Executive Chairman of Wamakko Local Government Area.

Speaking at the ceremony, Tambuwal tasked the new appointees to see their appointments as call to service, stressing that their appointment was based on merit.

“You were all selected based on merit in recognition of your track record in the service of Sokoto State.

“You are all experienced in your various fields of human endeavour and the state looks forward to getting positive contributions from you.

“Prof. Aishatu Madawaki has left an imprint in the area of girl-child education in Sokoto and we expect her to use her wealth of experience to improve on the education sector,” the governor said.

Tambuwal said government was desirous of affecting the lives of the people positively and would continue to explore various avenues to improve governance processes in the state.

He said in the light of this, the government would go ahead with earlier plans to establish the ministry, so as to tap from various renewable energy sources available in the state.

Addressing the Wamakko LGA Chairman, Tambuwal urged him to bear the challenges of local administration with honesty and integrity.

  • Ekiti 2018: I have the track record to redeem Ekiti from PDP’s failure – Kayode Ojo

An Ekiti State governorship aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Engr. Kayode Ojo, has proffered practical steps how he intend to redeem Ekiti people from the hotbed of poverty if he wins his party’s primary election and eventually emerges governor of the state.

Ojo believes Ekiti has all the potentials of creating its wealth and reduce total dependence on the allocations from the Federal Government before being able to grow its infrastructure.

Lamenting the many failures of the People Democratic Party [PDP], in the state, led by Governor Ayedele Fayose, the Oil and Gas mogul told TheNewsGuru.com that all PDP came to do in Ekiti is more or less what we call ‘419’.

Kasyode who strongly posited that PDP has no vision or clear cut plan for Ekiti state, however, promised to focus on the industrial strength of the State and the will of its people to drive its Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).

The Ijero-Ekiti-born entrepreneur said: “We should be working on how to move from being a rural state to an urban state where the about 136 towns and villages can boast of consistent power supply. To achieve this, all that we need is just 20 megawatt of power. Unfortunately, what you see right now is darkness everywhere.

“The good people of Ekiti State are yearning for something fresh, someone without political baggage, somebody who comes in from the private sector with experience in developing people and an entrepreneur that knows how to turn one Naira to two Naira.

“They want someone who has an antecedent in controlling several people to achieve a set goal, especially in the engineering sector where projects process takes long and you must deliver the project successfully, they want a person that has signed out cheques worth several millions. These are signs that such a person will not be moved by the money in government coffers and can control external influences.

According to the young politician and mentor to many, the state might be disadvantaged location wise but cannot fold its arms and continue to watch without doing anything to better the situation.

He praised Lagos State government for the feat achieved in drawing a budget of over N1trillion for 2018 fiscal year, noting that it is a record. “No state in Nigeria has achieved that feat. It’s because Lagos State is ready to generate enough revenue.

“So Ekiti State too has what it takes to stand tall among other States in Nigeria. But we need commitment buckled with experience. And what do I mean by experience, I mean we need somebody who has been able to turn N1 to N2. That’s the kind of leadership we need in Ekiti State, so that we can tap into what we have and use them to generate more revenue to develop the State.

He observed that the water produced by the state in partnership with UAC Nigeria Plc, Gossy Water could fetch the state more than the few millions it does right now, “only if it could be repackaged and rebranded. That table water has been like that almost since 2001 when it was established. Between then and now, how many times has Coca-Cola rebranded? So why is Gossy’s case like it is?” he pointed.

Ojo confirmed UAC’s claim that GOSSY is the only Natural Spring Water that passes through countless layers of rock from the aquifer of the Ikogosi Natural Springs in Ikogosi, Ekiti State which acts as a filter before it passes through micron filters, without chemical treatment or additives to enhance the quality or formation, saying that it is in better position as against some others packaged under unhealthy conditions.

“Nothing stops Ekiti from transporting the water to neighbouring states, especially Lagos with the large market. Our goal should be that Gossy is delivered to every five Star Hotel in town. It is regrettable that even within the state you can’t find it in the hotels. How much more outside the state.

“Currently, the investment fetches the government about 250million annually but can be expanded to become a N5billion investment. If you look at Ekiti today, everybody has seen that what PDP came to do in Ekiti is more or less what we call ‘419’. They had no vision, their major promise was ‘stomach infrastructure’. But if you look at the people’s stomachs now, they are still as flat as they were in 2014.

“So, majority of the people now understand that their lives cannot get better with just stomach infrastructure. They understand that their lives will only get better when there is opportunity for them to work, to earn money and use the money to support their families.

“If you look at APC states, you’ll see appreciable progress. I’m not saying everything is perfect, but you’ll see development of the people and the state. Everyone can see that APC governments grow the people.

“I have the track record, I have succeeded in the private sector, so, working for the people won’t be an issue. I have a successful engineering outfit that deals in all the equipment required for road construction and another one abroad that produces oil and gas specialized products. So, when I said Ekiti has the potentials to do far better than it is doing right now, you would understand that I have what it takes to fulfill these promises to Ekiti people.

“Well, we’ve seen people come in from the private sector and disappoint in government, but what is missing in them is compassion. I have always said that if we do not have someone with compassion, who is his brother’s keeper, we won’t get governance right.

“My life is not about me. It’s about others. That’s how it has always been and that’s why I’m in this race. I’ve looked in the eyes of ordinary people on the streets of Ekiti, and I feel for them; I know that their lives can be better.

“All we need is a person that knows how to utilise resources, how to make sure that the funds that come in are not just consumed. We can’t continue to consume and consume, we must produce our way out of poverty.

“What I am saying is that the people of Ekiti can entrust their futures and that of their children to me for the next four years. The state needs someone with compassion and across the state, and the people of Ekiti can testify that I have always shown compassion.

  • 2019: I won’t leave APC for PDP because of Atiku – Alhassan

A die hard supporter of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Minister of Women Affairs, Aisha Alhassan popularly called ‘Mama Taraba’ has stated that she won’t defect from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) because of her godfather (Atiku).

The minister also pledged allegiance on President Muhammadu Buhari, saying “I am and I will continue to remain in APC.’’

Recall that the former vice president had in December defected to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Since Atiku’s defection, there has been wide speculations that Alhassan, a former senator on the platform of the PDP and other allies of the former vice president would also follow suit.

She had earlier in September said she would support Mr. Abubakar for the 2019 presidential election even if President Muhammadu Buhari decided to run.

Atiku is my godfather even before I joined politics,” she said in Hausa. “And again, Baba Buhari did not tell us that he is going to run in 2019.”

Let me tell you today that if Baba said he is going to contest in 2019, I swear to Allah, I will go before him and kneel and tell him that ‘Baba I am grateful for the opportunity you gave me to serve your government as a minister but Baba just like you know I will support only Atiku because he is my godfather. If Atiku said he is going to contest.”

However, speaking in a telephone interview with Premium Times, the minister said she was not forced to leave the PDP in the first place and nobody can force her to leave the APC that she now belongs as well.

Politics is all about interest, and nobody forced me to leave PDP to join APC, so no want will force me out of it,” she said.

I will continue to work for APC and that’s why I travelled out to Taraba, to campaign for our party’s candidate Sanusi Jambawaile.

I know many may wish to see me leaving APC, but let me assure them I will remain in APC!

‘’So, how can I destroy the house we collectively built?”

Although, she declined comment on Atiku’s defection from the APC, said the party “is intact in Taraba.’’

She added, “There is no squabble or faction, and our great party APC in Taraba is intact. That’s why we all work and campaigned together with His Excellency the former Acting Governor UTC.

‘’So, we are one and there is no problem as some of you thought,’’ she further stated.

  • 2019: Buhari unperturbed by APC’s loss in Anambra, Taraba polls – Presidency

The Presidency on Sunday said President Muhammadu Buhari is committed to deepening the roots of democracy in Nigeria and as such is not perturbed when his political party (the All Progressives Congress, APC) losses elections to other political parties.

This was coming on the heels of the rerun elections conducted over the weekend in Anambra and Taraba States where candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and that of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) where declared winners by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The APC candidate also won the the Gwagwalada election.

Presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu, who was commenting on the outcome of the polls said: ‘‘the President is inherently committed to the independence of the electoral commission in his belief that the will of the people shall be the basis of authority of government which is expressed through periodic, free and fair elections. He will do nothing to impede INEC.”

Congratulating the winners of the elections in Anambra central senatorial district, Ardo Kola state constituency in Taraba and Gwagwalada central constituency in the FCT, on behalf of the president, the spokesman reaffirmed that under President Buhari’s watch, Nigeria will record more free, fair and credible elections.

The spokesman reiterated the president’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions in the country, by ensuring that all relevant institutions in the electoral process maintain a high-level of professionalism and independence throughout the electoral process.

While commending INEC, security agencies, civil societies, the media and other stakeholders for their roles in the elections, Mr. Garba called on parties not satisfied with the outcome of the polls to heed the president’s counsel by seeking legal redress through constitutional means.
