APC is undemocratic, afraid to hold convention – Makarfi

The Chairman of the National Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, has accused the All Progressives Congress, APC of being afraid to hold national convention.

He said this was the reason the ruling party had not been able to organise a national convention for many years.

Makarfi spoke in Abuja on Tuesday when he received the chairman of the Steering Committee on the development of strategic plan for National Institute of Legislative Studies, Aminu Shagari, and members on a courtesy visit.

“You have prayed for a successful convention of the PDP. We are not afraid. We are not APC, we are not afraid to hold convention. We are not afraid to hold meetings and convention because we are democratic,” he said.

Makarfi told his guests that he was aware that procedure for legislation was long and cumbersome, adding that the voting pattern could however be improved.

The former governor of Kaduna State said that the process of lawmaking “is not so democratic and the problem facing Nigeria goes beyond ‘nay’ and ‘yea’ because the moment we begin to reduce it to that, very sensitive issues that have telling effects on this country can be so lazily settled, we will face the consequences down the line.”

…says no better candidate than Buhari

The All Progressives Congress’ (APC) chieftain, Gen. Buba Marwa, on Tuesday, said so far, there was no better presidential candidate for the 2019 presidential election in the APC than President Muhammadu Buhari.

The meeting was organised by the Buba Marwa organisation, where the candidature of Buhari was endorsed for a re-election in 2019.

“We are happy with the measures the government is taking in the diversification of the economy, which are already paying off, especially in the agricultural and mining sectors; the improvement has manifested in the recent exit from recession”.

On the exit of the former Vice President Atiku Abubakar from the APC, Marwa said although, the move was a big loss to the party, it would not affect the chances of APC in Adamawa and even at the national level.

“No political party would like to lose someone like the former Vice President Atiku Abubakar; we assure that his departure will, however, not affect the fortunes of the party at any level.

Atiku Abubakar mulls creating jobs if elected President

Nigeria’s former Vice President (VP) Atiku Abubakar on Sunday afternoon announced rejoining the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), while stressing the need to create jobs in the country.

The former VP took to his official Facebook page to make the “important announcement,” saying he intended “to reach as many of our young people as possible”.

“I have found in my travels across the country that whenever I get into conversations with young people their number one concern is whether they will be able to get a job for without a job they have no means of sustaining themselves or begin a family,” Atiku said.

Atiku went further to state that “without the security of a job we cannot have security in our country. So, without jobs there is no future for you or for Nigeria.

“And I also know as a parent that the older generation is also concerned about jobs for their children and, too often today, for themselves as well.

“Creating jobs is something I know about as I have created over 50,000 direct jobs and 250,000 indirect jobs in my own State of Adamawa.

“And I also know how the government can help create the right environment for businesses to create jobs”.

“When I was Vice President in 1999 I was responsible for liberalizing the economy, particularly the telecom sector which enabled us to increase the number of people who could access a phone from less than 1 million then to over 100 million today.

“This transformation resulted in the creation of hundreds of thousands of new jobs from the top-up card vendors you see on every street corner to the many new businesses that fed off the mobile phone revolution.

“Some of you may know that I was elected Vice President under the banner of the PDP, which is the political party I had helped to found some ten years before.

“And some of you may also know that I left the PDP four years ago when I believed it was no longer aligned to the principles of equity, democracy and social justice upon which we had founded it.

“I joined the APC as I had hoped it would be the new force that would help improve life for our people and I was excited about the party’s manifesto to create three million new jobs a year.

“The result has not been the change people had been promised or voted for, as in the last two years almost three million Nigerians have lost their jobs.

“And today with a record 25% of people aged 18-25 unemployed, I can see how difficult it is for our youths to find a job.

“The key to creating jobs is a strong economy and that is what we are currently lacking,” he further stated.

The PDP remains his home; a house he was part of building and which he helped to nurture. We believe his return will add value in the process of rebuilding our Party to greater heights”.

The PDP described Mr. Abubakar’s decision to rejoin it as “another milestone recorded by the current leadership of our party in its quest to reconcile, rebuild and restructure the PDP ahead of the 2019 General Elections and beyond.

We will continue to remain transparent and dedicated to the service of this party. Again, we want to use this opportunity to call on all our members that are still in the APC or other parties to return home. ‎

We are equally extending our invitation to all those in the APC who are frustrated by the party’s failure to deliver the goods. Anyone who is desirous of a return to the era of abundance and freedom under the PDP administration is welcome. The umbrella is big enough to accommodate all.

We enjoin our members nationwide to come together as one family, as we march to Eagle Square, Abuja on Saturday 9 – Sunday 10, December 2017 to elect our new leaders who will manage the affairs of our party at the national level,” the statement said.

APC members will not join Atiku in PDP, says lawmaker

A member of the House of Representatives, Rep. Babajimi Benson, said on Sunday that he did not foresee exodus of members of the All Progressives Congress to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Benson said this in an interview with the NewsGuru on Sunday in Abuja shortly after the former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, formally joined the opposition PDP.

TNG recalls that Atiku on Nov. 24 announced his resignation of his membership of the ruling APC.

He said the complaints he had with the PDP under which he was vice president from 1999 to 2007, had been resolved, laying the groundwork for his return.

“I saw an article that said that the transfer season is open with Atiku’s move. However, while I still see a lot of influx into the APC, I see a trickle into the PDP, the lawmaker said.

Benson urged members of the APC not to be deterred by Atiku’s defection to PDP.

He said that the move by the former vice-president had provided a reason for the ruling party to put its house in order.

The lawmaker, who represents Ikorodu Federal Constituency of Lagos, however described Atiku’s exit as a minus for the APC.

“Anybody whether big, small, mighty, tiny or skinny that leaves APC it is a loss to the party.

“It is also an opportunity for us to put our house in order,” he ordered.

  • I’m not perturbed by Atiku’s movement from APC – Lalong

Plateau state governor, Simon Lalong, a close associate of former vice president Atiku Abubakar, says he is not perturbed by the latter’s movement from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Atiku, on Sunday afternoon, announced rejoining the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which he left in 2013, joining others to build the APC into a strong political force that wrestled power from the PDP in 2015.

The former vice president and Lalong had been very close friends in the PDP before moving to the APC, making pundits to list Lalong among governors Atiku had boasted would soon join him in his new political fold.

But, concurrent with when Atiku was announcing his movement into the PDP, Lalong told newsmen on Sunday in Jos that he would not leave the APC.

“We reached out to Atiku while building the APC structure in Plateau and received some help from him, but my loyalty is with the APC. My loyalty is with President Buhari and my people have endorsed him for a second term.

“Whatever happens in another party does not concern me. We are only waiting for the APC National Convention to endorse Buhari for a second tenure,” he said.

He, however, stated that it was the constitutional right of every Nigerian to decide which political group to associate with.

“Hello! My name is Atiku Abubakar. I am speaking to you today on Facebook live because I want to reach as many of our young people as possible, as I have an important announcement to make about the future of Nigeria.

“This will be an interactive session; so, I will like you to send me questions; as it is you, our youths, who represent the future of our nation.

“I have found in my travels across the country that whenever I get into conversations with young people their number one concern is whether they will be able to get a job for without a job they have no means of sustaining themselves or begin a family.

“And without the security of a job we cannot have security in our country. So, without jobs there is no future for you or for Nigeria.

“So today I want to let you know that I am returning home to the PDP as the issues that led me to leave it are now being resolved and it is clear that the APC has let the Nigerian people, and especially our young people, down.

“But rather than giving a long political speech on this matter, I thought it will be more helpful to invite you to ask me questions, and share with you my answers”.
