  • You can’t tell me what to say as Buhari’s appointee, Sagay blasts APC leaders

You can’t tell me what to say as Buhari’s appointee, Sagay blasts APC leaders

Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee on Anti-Corruption (PACAC), Professor Itse Sagay, has said the leadership of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC cannot dictate what to say to him as an appointee of the President on matters of national importance.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the APC had in a statement on Wednesday warned Sagay, who had been engaged in war of words with the upper chamber of the National Assembly over a statement he made challenging the integrity of the lawmakers to stop his unsavoury comments henceforth.

The party said the decision was part of moves to halt the deterioration in the relationship between the executive and the National Assembly.

But according to Sagay, the party has no moral standing to tell him what to do since he was not and appointee of the party but Buhari’s.

He further said that as far as he knows, his views have been in tandem with that of the President.

Sagay who addressed journalists on Thursday in Abuja, reiterated his resolve to dishonour Senate’s summon, adding that the APC has started to obey evil.

He said: “I am not an appointee of the APC. I don’t know where they thought they had the authority to tell me what I should do. I certainly will not honour it (Senate’s summons).

“My view about what we are doing is in consonance with what the President is doing.

“They (APC) are just compromising with evil. That is what the party is doing and they certainly will not get me to do that.

“I will continue with the original programme of Buhari to get rid of corruption in this country. I will not compromise.”

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the National Assembly had summoned Sagay over the his ‘unguarded’ comments concerning the Senate.

However, Sagay had insisted that the lawmakers lacked the powers to summon him.

  • Leave God out of Meningitis outbreak, blame APC, Makarfi tells Yari

The Senator Ahmed Makarfi faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has told Governor of Zamafara State, Abdulaziz Yari, to hold his party, the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC responsible for the outbreak of Cerebrospinal Meningitis in the country, and not God.

Makarfi said this in a statement released by the spokesman of the faction, Prince Dayo Adeyeye.

The statement reads: “The news of the outbreak of Cerebrospinal Meningitis in the country and the apathetic attitude of both the Zamfara State and Federal Government to curtail the scourge is disheartening and preposterous.

“This Government wasted so much funds on the State House Clinic with no tangible result but neglected other health centers and clinics across the country that have capacities to manage the health challenges of other Nigerians. For the record, the primary responsibility of any government is to protect the lives and property of its citizens and the APC-led Government has remained insensitive, careless and adamant to the plight of Nigerians in all ramifications.

“As of Tuesday, April 4, 2017, about 336 Nigerians have lost their lives due to the outbreak of type C Cerebrospinal Meningitis and the Federal Ministry of Health has not taken any concrete step to contend with the spread. It is on record that the PDP Government in sixteen years did not allow such mindless display of insensitivity as seen by this APC administration.

“More worrisome is the statement credited to the Governor of Zamfara State, Alh. Abdulaziz Yari in which he attributed the outbreak of Meningitis to God’s making. This is shameful and very unfortunate as the APC has run out of reasons to blame previous PDP administration but it’s now blaming God for its failures.

“Governor Yari should not blame God for his failures but that of his party, the APC, to avoid incurring God’s anger on their crass ineptitude in governance. However, we wish to advise him to resign immediately for making such statement as a state Governor and the Chairman of Governors Forum who is supposed to bring hope to the people and not despair.

“Finally, we call on the Federal Government of Nigeria to stop playing politics with this outbreak and do everything within its power to end the menace. As a party, our heart goes to the families of all those that lost their lives to the scourge within this period. We urge all Nigerians to drink more water, sleep in a ventilated environment and report symptoms to the nearest health center within their areas for quick medical attention.”

TheNewsGuru.com reports that Governor Yari had on Tuesday while reacting to the outbreak of the disease said God was punishing Nigerians for their lifestyle with the disease.

Abdulkadir told the News Agency of Nigeria [NAN] in a telephone interview that the governor had sometimes back threatened to take such action against him.

The APC chieftain said the governor had made the threat in the presence of six other governors from the North West.

I am not surprised by his action, it is a political vendetta. But I will not make further comment because the case is already in court.”

NAN reports that officials of the Kaduna State Urban Planning and Development Authority [KASUPDA] backed by the police demolished the four-bedroom duplex on Wednesday.

The officials had claimed that there was no official permit for the erection of the building.

NAN reports that Abdulkadir and El-Rufa’i had been having running battle over the internal crisis in the state chapter of the APC.

The North West office of the party had quashed the suspension of Sen. Shehu Sani and asked officials of the party loyal to El-Rufa’i to abide by the directive.

The APC has also mandated Governor Aminu Masari of Katsina State to mediate in the crisis, but the move is yet to bear fruits.

The Special Adviser to the governor on Media and Communication, Muyiwa Adekeye declined comment on the matter.

He said that only KASUPDA could respond appropriately on the propriety of its action.

  • Executive/Legislative faceoff: APC warns Sagay, other appointees to stop unsavoury comments

Executive/Legislative faceoff: APC warns Sagay, other appointees to stop unsavoury comments

The ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, has urged the Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption, PACAC, Itse Sagay, to henceforth recognize the independence of the National Assembly as a separate arm of government and henceforth put a stop to his unsavoury comments on its members.

The party, in a statement on Wednesday, by its spokesperson, Bolaji Abdullahi, said its call is based on efforts being made to resolve the rift between the Executive and the National Assembly.

Apart from Sagay, the APC also asked all government appointees to “stop making statements that may further worsen the relationship between the two arms of government and derail the Party’s effort to make peace”.

The party on Wednesday said it acknowledges the fatherly role being played by President Buhari to resolve outstanding issues with the National Assembly, by setting up a high-level committee led by the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo.

“We believe the comments attributed to Prof. Sagay are uncalled for, regrettable and could further complicate the relationship between these vital arms of government.

“Our expectation would be that as a Law Professor of repute, Prof. Sagay would appreciate the need to not denigrate the institutions of democracy, be it the Executive, Legislature or Judiciary,” the party said.

It also said as an appointee of the President, it expects the don to key into his principal’s temper and help him to make friends that would make his job easier and not make enemies of people who, by virtue of the position they occupy under the nation’s law, are critical to the running of government and the nurturing of democracy.

The party said it objects to Sagay’s call on the Senate to withdraw invitation extended to him.

“As someone appointed by our government, we find this kind of posturing unacceptable and potentially injurious to the peace efforts by the party.

“The party wishes to reiterate its earlier position admonishing all elected or appointed officials of our government to desist from utterances that may endanger efforts to build harmonious relationship between the two arms of government. Prof. Sagay should not operate outside this admonition,” the party said.

The party also expressed happiness with the meeting it had with the Senate Caucus on Tuesday and said is confident that all the issues raised will be addressed. It also urged the National Assembly to further intensify its efforts to ensure timely passage of the 2017 budget.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that Sagay had last week criticised the Senate for refusing to approve the 27 Resident Electoral Commissioner, RECs nominees sent by President Buhari.

Sagay said the Senate would regret its decision to threaten the presidency.

However, in a defence, the Senate said its decision is based on the president’s refusal to effect its recommendation on the removal of the acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibrahim Magu.

The decision of the Senate did not go down well the Sagay hence his outburst against the Senate.

The Senate however passed a resolution asking its committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions to investigate the comments made by Sagay.

The Committee subsequently invited the PACAC chairman to appear before it.

However, the Sagay on Tuesday wrote to Senate President Bukola Saraki asking him to direct the committee to withdraw its summon on him or he would sue them.

Sagay said his criticism was anchored on Section 171(1) of the Constitution, which empowered the President to appoint any person to hold or act as head of any extra-ministerial department.

He said though he was not served with any summons, he deemed it fit to join issues with members of the Senate on the violation of his fundamental right to freedom of expression.

The rights, he said, were guaranteed by Section 39 of the 1999 Constitution as amended and Article 9 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (Ratification and Enforcement) Act (Cap A9) Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

He also said Section 88 of the Constitution under which the Senate purportedly summoned him is subject to other provisions of the Constitution, including Section 39, which guarantees freedom of expression.

  • Katsina APC Treasurer, 4,000 supporters defect to PDP

Alhaji Nasiru Usman, Treasurer, Katsina State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), along with 4,000 others.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the defectors presented themselves to the Kankia Local Government chapter of their new political abode, on Saturday.

Speaking on behalf of other defectors, Usman said that they decided to jump ship because the APC neglected them.

It is a fact that I led many others in the struggle that ensured victory for the APC in the 2015 general election.

I campaigned vigorously against the then PDP candidate, Musa Nashuni, who is from my own local government – Kankia – and ensured he lost even his village, to Aminu Masari of APC.

However, after the polls and the subsequent assumption of Masari as governor of Katsina State, majority of us were neglected by the APC.

In my own case, some party stalwarts in Kankia went to the party’s state headquarters and ensured that I was suspended from its fold, for reasons best known to them.

I have been on suspension for 14 months, with the state office refusing to recall me as directed by the Northwest Zonal Chapter of the party, following my successful petition against the illegal action,” he said.

He said that his defection to the PDP was not to contest for any position.

We left the party because of neglect. The 4,000 people defecting with me are from the 10 political wards of Kankia,” he said.

Nashuni, Masari’s PDP rival in 2015, who also spoke, said that the PDP would not repeat the mistakes that led to the loss of the 2015 elections.

Nashuni urged PDP members to remain focused, steadfast and united so as to be able to wrestle power from its rivals in 2019.

Alhaji Salisu Majigiri, who received the defectors, promised a level playing ground for all PDP members.

In PDP, we are one and the same and have equal opportunities at all time,” he said.

  • Rivers Rerun: APC rejects INEC’s supplementary election results

Rivers Rerun: APC rejects INEC’s supplementary election results

The Rivers State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has rejected Etche State Constituency and Etche/Omuma Federal Constituency rerun election results declared by the Independent Electoral Commission, INEC.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that INEC on Sunday declared Jerome Eke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) winner of the concluding election into Etche/Omuma Federal Constituency in Rivers.

According to a statement by the Rivers State APC Chairman, Davies Ikanya, the party was taken aback when it was reported that the National Electoral Commissioner in charge of Bayelsa, Edo and Rivers states, Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu,‎ had ordered that the incomplete results be declared despite the earlier declaration by the two Returning Officers on Saturday at Okehi that the elections were inconclusive.

The statement reads in part: “The APC vehemently rejects the results as declared today (Sunday) at the State INEC Office in Port Harcourt. This action by INEC runs counter and contradictory to earlier announcement on Saturday by the aforementioned Returning Officers who are the duly empowered persons to make such declarations.

What INEC did today is a rape on democracy and the APC will surely resist it with every legal window available to it. INEC can only do what it did today because Gov. Nyesom Wike has, as usual, generously compromised key officials of INEC in Rivers State.

The APC notes that despite the general outcry concerning Gov. Nyesom Wike’s interference in the electoral process, the governor physically held hostage a Returning Officer to force him announce results in a manner unbecoming of a governor. We condemn this and call on INEC leadership and security agencies to investigate this unfortunate incidence.

We recall that this same compromised INEC in Rivers State embarked on the now infamous 2015 elections which is unarguably the worst election in the annals of Nigeria. During the December 10, 2016 rerun that followed, INEC continued to exhibit unwarranted contradictions and unwholesome mishandling of the process which resulted in the further rescheduling of the rerun elections for Etche State Constituency and Etche/Omuma Federal Constituency. Sadly, INEC has, once again, bungled it.”
