Buhari congratulates APC stalwart, Akande at 78

President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated elder statesman and founding Interim Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Abdukareem Adebisi Akande, as he turns 78 years on Jan. 16.

This congratulatory message is contained in a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday by Mr Femi Adesina, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the president.

Adesina said Buhari joined all members of the APC, friends and immediate family of the eminent leader in celebrating the birthday of Akande.

The president noted with delight that Akande was one of the pillars of the opposition party that had successfully ensured a round victory and smooth transition to unseat an incumbent president in 2015.

According to him, Akande’s wisdom, sacrifices, patriotism and commitment to the unity and development of Nigeria will always be remembered by posterity.

Buhari affirmed that Akande’s present role in the APC as a strong, visionary leader, a reconciling voice, strategist and stabiliser had paid up substantially in the enormous challenge of healing the ruling party, and the country.

The president extolled the passionate and relentless efforts of the statesman in ensuring the entrenchment democracy in Nigeria, and sustenance of the rule of law.

He prayed that the almighty God would grant “Chief Akande longer life, more strength and wisdom to continue serving the country he loves, and humanity’’.

Akande was former governor of Osun between 1999 and 2003, and had meritoriously served as deputy governor of old Oyo State from 1979 to 1983.

  • 2019: Nigerians looking on to PDP for salvation, emancipation from APC – Former ministers

Some former ministers of the federation under the aegis of Forum of Former Ministers, FFM, has claimed that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, remains the only credible platform that could save Nigeria from the hardships they are made to face under the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC government.

According to the forum, Nigerians were now looking up to the former ruling party for salvation.

Former governor of Jigawa State and chairman of the forum, Sule Lamido said this when he led other members on a solidarity visit to Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State on Thursday.

Lamido reiterated the dertermination of members of the opposition not to succumb to intimidations aimed at shutting them from speaking on national issues as it concerns the welfare of Nigerians.

While also urging governors of PDP in the country to ensure that the party did not die, Lamido said they should build it into a virile structure.

In Lamido’s words: “We are with you in your travails. We support you all the way. We know that you are under siege by anti-democratic forces.

No matter the tyranny of the oppressor, the voice of the people must be heard. That was the case of Rivers State during the Rivers Rerun Elections. Nigerians are looking on to the PDP for salvation and emancipation from the APC. Our governors must stand together to be our rallying point”.

Governor Wike in his response said the crisis in the party would soon be a thing of the past, adding that Rivers State would continue to remain a strong hold of the PDP.

We will continue to stand firm and defend democracy. For us, we have made up our mind. Our family is PDP. We are prepared to pay the price. We are determined to work for the PDP at all times. Don’t have sleepless nights. The PDP will remain strong in Rivers State. We will continue the struggle against anti-people forces and we shall continue to win”, he said.

In attendance for the solidarity visit are; Former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Former Jigawa State Governor, Dr Sule Lamido, Former Minister of Education and Former Kano State Governor, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, Former Minister of Youth Development and Former Adamawa State Governor, Mr Boni Haruna, Former Minister of Interior, Comrade Abba Moro, Former Minister of Women Affairs, Iyom Josephine Anenih, Former Minister of State for Defence, Erelu Olusola Obada.

  • Stop dragging us into your war against security agencies, Rivers APC tells Wike, PDP

The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC has called on Governor Nyesom Wike and his party, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP not to drag it (APC) into its alleged war against security agencies.

This was made known in a statement released exclusively to TheNewsGuru.com by the party secretariat in the state on Thursday.

The statement reads in full: “Despite our determined efforts and resolve to stay clear of Gov. Nyesom Wike and the Peoples Democratic Party [PDP] war against Nigerian security agencies, the governor and his party [PDP] appear very determined to drag the All Progressives Congress [APC] into the fray of what seems to be a war they cannot win.

The APC notes with shock that Rivers PDP in a statement signed by Jerry Needam on behalf of the PDP State Chairman, Felix Obuah, is accusing the Nigeria Police of becoming the security arm of APC. This is a joke taken too far by every decent standard in politics.

We recall that in the same press statement PDP accused the Nigeria Police of arresting 21 ad-hoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, who took part in the legislative re-run election in the State.

While the APC will not attempt to speak for the Nigeria Police, we wish to state that the PDP is simply crying wolf and this is typical of them and therefore not surprising to many. We do not see why the PDP should be too worried that ad-hoc staff of INEC or indeed anybody is invited by the Nigeria Police to assist it on any issue. How that becomes a source of worry for the PDP is baffling to us. Could it be a confirmation of our long-held suspicion that PDP smuggled their members into the INEC ad-hoc staff list in order to do their bidding? Or could the investigation of the ad-hoc staff possibly lead to the unravelling of possible extent and dimensions of compromise of INEC officials by Gov. Nyesom Wike and the PDP hence the apprehension and false alarm?

The APC is convinced that the camp of the PDP is presently thrown into confusion because the invited ad-hoc INEC staff are likely to confess and name those who compromised them over the December 10 rerun election and that is the reason behind the panic mode Rivers PDP and Gov. Wike have suddenly found themselves in.

We wish to remind the governor and his party that clear conscience fears no accusation because the truth will ultimately prevail. The purported arrest and transfer of 21 ad-hoc INEC staff to Abuja by the Police, even if true, should not elicit the sort of animated frenzy that has become evident of the governor and PDP in Rivers State. Or could it be that that INEC and their staff in Rivers State have become the election administrative arm of Rivers PDP? We ask that we may know.

We call on the Nigeria Police and other security agencies not to be fazed by Governor Wike’s antics and empty threats for those are his stock-in-trade without which he may never function true to type,” the statement concludes.

  • APC warns Ondo civil servants against last minute looting

APC warns Ondo civil servants against last minute looting

The All Progressives Congress has warned civil servants in Ondo State against looting the resources of the state.

Abayomi Adesanya, the APC Publicity Secretary in the state, gave the warning in a statement in Akure on Wednesday.

Adesanya advised that civil servants should not connive with outgoing political officers to divert resources of the state.

Adesanya said such last minute looting of public resources would have repercussions on them in future.

He said: “We have been adequately briefed that some political office holders are seriously mounting pressure on permanent secretaries to coerce them into signing and perfecting their looting documents viz-a-viz cheques, contract papers.

“Some of them have refused to bow to these antics.

“The tenancy of Governor Olusegun Mimiko in Alagbaka Government House is due to expire 43 days from now.

“Therefore, senior civil servants and directors, especially permanent secretaries, should be extremely careful in dealing with the prodigious acts of an expiring government.

“It is satanic, callous, criminal, contemptible and a deliberate act of sabotage for individuals to attempt to steal public funds as valedictory gifts for themselves.”

Adesanya said that aside from cases that had been reported by the media, the party had also been inundated with calls and messages by concerned citizens alerting it about unscrupulous actions of some Mimiko administration officials.

  • Lawan’s emergence as Senate leader settles old rifts in our party – APC

The All Progressives Congress, APC has said it welcomed Senate’s decision on the change of its leadership saying the removal of Ali Ndume and subsequent emergence of Ahmed Lawan has put to rest several issues surrounding the senate leadership in 2015.

APC national publicity secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, in a statement, called the development a concrete expression of faith by the APC Senate Caucus in efforts to resolve the lingering issues that trailed the election of Senate leadership.

We believe this is a major step forward in our efforts to reunite the various interest groups in that Senate election, thereby presenting a common legislative front for our great party,” he said.

We are particularly delighted that the consultations that were initiated towards the end of 2015 between the party caucuses in the National Assembly and the party executives as well as other leading stakeholders of our party has yielded these results and the Senate has demonstrated its willingness to finally submit to the will of the party in this regard.

With this development therefore, we are confident that the issues arising from the elections in the Senate in 2015 have been put to rest”, he added.

APC recalled that the party leadership had resolved that Senator Lawan be compensated with the position of the Senate Leader soon after the issue of election in the Senate occurred.

He said the directive was not fully complied with at the time, but expressed happiness to see the change effected, stressing that it represents a significant progress in efforts to build a strong and united party.

APC congratulated Senator Lawan on his election and expresses hope that he would use his vast experience and knowledge to enhance legislative works and its agenda of change.

APC also assured Nigerians that it would continue to work under the leadership and guidance of President Muhammadu Buhari to resolve any other pending issues that might have affected the party at different levels.

The ruling party also thanked Senator Ndume for his service and sacrifice to the party, which, it added, would not be forgotten.

  • Senate Leadership: Ndume kicks as APC reconciliatory moves throws him out, anoints Lawan

The Senate at plenary today (Tuesday) removed its majority leader, Senator Ali Ndume (Borno South) and replaced him immediately with the initial party candidate Ahmed Lawan (Yobe North)

There are strong indications that the ousted Senate Majority Leader, Senator Ali Ndume was removed from office to settle the inner rancor in the All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to TheNewGuru’s findings Ndume’s removal which comes as senate is closing the plenary sitting for the day is said to be part of the on-going reconciliatory process in the APC.

Remember, Ahmed Lawan from Yobe State was the nominee of the APC leadership but the party’s North East Caucus members in the Senate then insisted that they preferred Ndume. Now, like in the House of Reps, the party leadership choice is getting the slot.

I am still Senate Majority Leader – Ndume

Meanwhile, Ndume has maintained that he remains the Senate Leader.

However, Ndume was quoted to have said that he remains the senate leader.

“I still remain Senate Leader,” he said at a press briefing. He said he was unaware of his removal by the APC Senate Caucus.

Senate President Senator Bukola Saraki read a letter from APC caucus on the change in the Senate leadership.

Recall that Lawan was the choice of the Bola Tinubu group for the Senate presidency in 2015.

But on the day the Senate convened for its first plenary, Saraki, with the support of the minority PDP caucus seized control and took over the leadership.

Lawan was not even around to contest the seat, as he was held up at the International Conference Centre for a meeting, that never held, with President Muhammadu Buhari.

Saraki’s emergence created divisions in the APC. The crisis was accentuated when he refused to adopt Lawan and some other nominees of the party sent by the party leadership for various positions.

  • APC offered me money, luxury cars to fight Fayose – RTEAN boss

The Ekiti State Chairman of Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria, RTEAN, Samuel Agbede, has alleged that the All Progressives Congress, APC, of offering him bribe to work against Governor Ayodele Fayose.

He said the opposition party also promised him political appointment, luxury cars and other incentives if the association could support it in its plan to frustrate the state government.

Agbede said his rejection of the bribe led the APC to sponsor some willing members of RTEAN to cause confusion in the association.

Speaking with DAILY POST in Ado Ekiti during the inauguration of the first phase of the state RTEAN secretariat, Agbede vowed that no amount of harassment, intimidation and threat will make him to withdraw support for Fayose.

“They offered me money, promises political position and luxury cars among other things. I rejected them.

“Their latest antics is that they gathered former members of the executives to be causing trouble within the association.

“I will never deviate. I’m working in line with the Constitution of RTEAN which says we should support the government of the day,” he said

Reeling out his achievements, Agbede said he had empowered over 30 drivers by making them car owners since assumption of office and promised to continue to do so.

He appealed to members to control their emotion so as not to harass innocent private car owners on the road.

  • How we identified beneficiaries of N5,000 programme – Presidency

How we identified beneficiaries of N5,000 programme – Presidency

The Federal Government has given an insight on how it determined the beneficiaries of the Conditional Cash Transfer who are now receiving the N5,000 monthly stipend across the nine pilot States.

According to the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity in the Office of the Vice President, Laolu Akande, the nine States are Bauchi, Borno, Cross Rivers, Ekiti, Kwara, Kogi, Niger, Osun and Oyo.

Akande clarified that reference to Ogun State instead of Osun State among the pilot states in his last press statement on the issue was a typographical error.

In his press update on the progress of the Buhari administration’s Social Investment Programmes over the weekend, Akande explained how the Community-Based Targeting model of the World Bank was used two years ago to identify most of the beneficiaries in the pilot States, as the World Bank is also an active agent in the entire process.

But he added that the data collected belongs to Nigeria.

According to Akande: “There is no way anyone can describe the selection of the beneficiaries of the CCT as partisan as the beneficiaries from eight of the nine pilot States were picked even before this administration came into office.

“First, the officials at Federal level, working with the State officials, identify the poorest Local Government Areas, using an existing poverty map for the State, then the LG officials identify the poorest communities in the LGAs and we send our teams there.

“The first thing our team does after selection of the LGAs is to select members of the NOA, the LGA and community officials to form the CBT team.

Then we train the selected officials on how to conduct Focus Group discussions at community level. These focus groups comprise of women, men, youth, as the community determines.

“After training them, the CBT teams now go to each of their communities to sensitize the leaders, including traditional rulers, on the CBT process and the necessity for objectivity and openness in the process.

At that meeting, they firm up a date to convene a community meeting at a designated location within the community.

“On the set date, discussions are held in the local languages, using terminologies that resonate in that community.

The CBT team will explain to the community the purpose of the gathering, i.e. to determine the parameters of poverty upon which persons can be described as poor and vulnerable within the context of that community.

“The CBT teams will then engage each group (men, women and youth) in the conversation around the criteria and parameters for determining the poorest people.

The groups would then be encouraged to identify those households that fall within the criteria that the community itself determines, and told that the information is required for government’s planning purposes.

“Various poverty criteria have been thrown up so far. In some cases, people have said it’s the number of times they eat, it’s the number of times the fumes of firewood go up from the house, the size of farmland or type of crops grown, etc.

“Then the groups resume in plenary and report back the criteria and parameters discussed.

“The CBT team would then compile the criteria and parameters and ask each group to return to their break-out sessions and now begin to identify the households in the community that have been identified as fitting the criteria and parameters.

“Once that is done at the groups, everybody comes together again with names compiled by each group.

Now, when the same name is featured in at least two of the three groups, it is deemed qualified to be listed on the Social Register.

“At this stage, we now enumerate the members of the household and open a bank account for each of the caregivers by capturing the biometric data of households identified as among the poorest and vulnerable.”

According to Akande, in eight of the nine pilot States, this process had taken place at least two years ago under a programme supported by the World Bank under an agreement entered into directly with the State Governments on the YESSO project.

The ninth state, Akande said, was Borno State, which was added because of the IDP situation, with the list of the beneficiaries that has been verified by SEMA.

He said: ““This is an entirely fair and transparent process and short of mischief, there is no way you can describe this process as partisan. The President is president of the entire country and the SIPs are for all Nigerians as the case may be.”

In addition to the nine pilot States and with the release of funds for the programmes, the CBT model has now commenced in other States, Akande said.

He said the States have been updated on the requirements for the engagement by the Federal team and once the lists from States are enumerated, their details are uploaded onto a server at the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System, which hosts the electronic platform that validates all the payments of the FG for the SIPs.

He said banks have been informed that payments must be at community level, so those banks engaged for the pilot stage have in turn engaged several payment agents, to ensure cash-out to the beneficiaries in their places of residence which are distant to the bank locations.
