Anambra governorship election petitions tribunal relocates to Ilorin

The Anambra governorship election petitions tribunal has relocated its sittings from Awka to Ilorin in Kwara.

Mr Surajo Gusau, Secretary of the tribunal, disclosed this in Awka on Tuesday.

Gusau said that the movement took place on Dec. 17 saying that the tribunal had already settled down in Ilorin.

He, however, did not disclose the reasons for the relocation, saying it was based an administrative directive.

Gusau said that the tribunal was handling 12 cases apart from the one filed by Accord Party which was withdrawn on Dec. 9.

The tribunal was set up to handle petitions arising from the Anambra governorship poll, won by Prof. Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

Anambra: Don’t go to court – ex-Guber aspirant urges Uba

Chief Rommy Okoli, a former Anambra governorship aspirant, has advised Sen. Andy Uba to accept the result of the just-concluded governorship poll.

Okoli, who is a chieftain of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, gave the advice in an interview with newsmen in Awka on Wednesday.

He described Soludo’s victory as “profound and widely accepted by Anambra people and lovers of democracy”.

He, therefore, urged Uba, the All Progressives Congress’ flag bearer, who came third in the election, to drop his plans to contest the outcome in court.

“I am certain that Uba will not achieve anything by embarking on litigations against Soludo, who won the election.

“Doing that will instead make people hate him more.

“Anambra people have spoken in unison, I congratulate the winner and call for restitution, reconciliation, reconstruction and rebuilding of Anambra that everyone will be proud of,” he said.

Okoli urged other contestants in the poll to support Soludo in the interest of peace and progress of Anambra.

According to him, there is so much work to do, hence the governor would not need distractions.

“Dragging the governor-elect to court by anyone will be counter-productive and indeed a distraction,” he said.

He said although the Bimodal Voter Authentication System technology adopted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the poll hampered the process, “it had a universal effect on all the candidates.

“It is true that INEC performed below expectation but their inefficiency affected all the candidates, Soludo was not responsible for the challenges.

“The election has come and gone and a winner emerged.

“It is now incumbent on all the good people of Anambra and friends of the state to rally round the governor-elect,” he said.

Recall that Okoli, whose aspiration ended at the APGA screening stage, later endorsed Mr Valentine Ozigbo of the Peoples Democratic Party, ahead of the election.

How we successfully pacify aggrieved youths not to disrupt Anambra poll – Ex-APGA Chairman

Senator Victor Umeh has explained how the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) was able to pacify some aggrieved youths not to disrupt the November 6 governorship election in Anambra State.

Prior to the build-up of the election, there was a palpable fear of the crucial poll not holding due to the palpable insecurity in the south-eastern state.

In addition, security formations have been attacked with operatives killed, as well as many innocent residents of Anambra State, notably Dr Chike Akunyili, the husband of the late boss of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Dora Akunyili,

Speaking on Wednesday on a monitored interview on Channels Television, the former APGA National Chairman said the party, traditional rulers and religious leaders reached out to the youths to ensure that the poll was held smoothly.

He equally commended President Muhammadu Buhari for dominating the state with more security operatives to erase the fears that gripped the electorates.

“Through negotiations, on November 4, the IPOB declared openly that people should go and vote in the election and the sit-at-home order which they had issued for one week beginning from November 5, the order was lifted,” he said.

“The greater commendation will go to our traditional rulers and traditional leaders. We had to resort to reaching out to our young people, the people who have been threatening that there won’t be an election in Anambra State.”

While noting that the young people had every reason to be aggrieved, the APGA chieftain explained that the several appeals paid off as they conveyed the message to their people to take things easy.

This is even as he noted that the issues of marginalisation of the Igbos will be properly addressed in the Nigerian polity through dialogue and persuasion.

APGA begins registration of members in Ebonyi State

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Ebonyi chapter has commenced registration of members throughout the state.

Mr Ricky Okorouka, the state chairman of the party announced this on Wednesday in Abakaliki while briefing newsmen on the outcome of its meeting held in Abakaliki.

Okorouka said that the decision to commence the registration became imperative in view of calls by members of the public, including prominent politicians in the state to join the party.

“Our party has already started receiving calls from some politicians in the state, who want to join the party.

“In fact, one of the major reasons we met was to flag – off our massive membership registration exercise.

“We decided to start our membership registration following the requests by members of the public to officially join the party.

“So many came to me, I told them to meet with their various local government chairmen, so that they will be able to identify their various wards, where they can register,” he said.

Okorouka noted that the recent landslide victory by the party in the Anambra governorship election was an indication of the acceptance of the party in the South-East zone.

“We are optimistic that APGA will take over the mantle of leadership in the state in the 2023 governorship election.

“APGA has come to stay in Ebonyi and APGA is rising. The time for APGA to take over Ebonyi has come, that is why we have begun to mobilise for membership.

“We have met men of timber and caliber in the state who told us they want to contest some positions in our party.

“With the kind of persons approaching us, we believe that the party has a lot of chances in 2023, and we will take over the state,” he said.

According to Okorouka, the party congratulates, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, governor-elect over his victory during the Nov. 6 Anambra governorship poll.

The party chairman added that the victory had boosted the morale of members of the party in Ebonyi.

“The victory of the APGA flag bearer in the Anambra gubernatorial election is a ‘tonic’ and morale booster to us in Ebonyi.

“The victory will also increase the tempo of activities of the party in the state,” he said.

Okorouka said the party also congratulated Chief Victor Oye, its national leader and His Excellency, Chief Willy Obiano, governor of Anambra for leading the party to victory in the Anambra election.

He urged party faithful to continue keeping faith with the party.

Okorouka also praised the executives and other APGA stalwarts for keeping faith with the party despite the challenges in the past.

Anambra: Ozigbo calls Soludo on phone, lambasts INEC after losing governorship election

In the fallout from the November 6 Anambra State governorship election, Mr Valentine Ozigbo, candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has called his All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) counterpart, Prof. Charles Soludo on the phone to congratulate him.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Mr Ozigbo made this known on Wednesday in a statement, in which he stressed that the election was fraught with a lot of short-comings on the part of various government institutions.

Ozigbo argued that security agencies failed to provide a peaceful environment for campaigns to hold, and that on election day, the security operatives were absent from many polling centres leading to elections not holding or held in situations that allowed for chaos and fraud.

The PDP candidate in the statement also accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of presenting untrained and poorly trained staff who could not operate the voting machines in many places, stressing that the Commission failed woefully in providing logistical support for their staff and so elections started very late in many places and did not hold in many others.

Ozigbo’s statement reads: “I have just called Professor Chukwuma Soludo and congratulated him on being declared the winner of the Anambra State governorship elections, 2021. I wished him well and prayed for his success.

“Let me also use this opportunity to congratulate all the men and women who contested our dear state’s governorship this year. You all have shown a determination to see that Anambra is better. It was an honour to run this race with you.

“Two years ago, I decided to go into active partisan politics with a number of objectives in mind.

“First, to use Anambra to set an example of excellence in governance. The second was to unify Anambra and Ala Igbo around a shared vision of greatness. The third was to inspire more professionals to go into politics. I believe that attainment of these would go a long way in changing the story of black men and women in this world for the better.

“Pulled by the vision of a better and brighter Anambra, we set out on the quest for governorship, resolute on taking revolutionary steps to address the decay and decline in security, infrastructure, education, healthcare, the environment, and all other social systems meant to serve the people.

“As laid out in our Ka Anambra Chawapu Manifesto, we planned to transform Anambra into the most competitive sub-national economy in Nigeria by opening up public, social, and commercial spaces leveraging on the strength of our youth and women. Ultimately, to make Anambra the pride of Nigeria.

“Given where we started and where we are today, we consider ourselves winners. Our Ka Anambra Chawapu message has permeated the consciousness of Ndi Anambra, and the nation at large. It is the strongest message that has come out of Anambra 2021, and it continues to beat in the hearts of Ndi Igbo.

“On unifying Ala Igbo, I believe that every Igbo person now understands that they have a voice in me because I will forever speak in the interest of the Igbo Nation and the rest of the marginalised and forgotten in Nigeria.

“During this journey, especially in the last months, I have met many professionals who have been inspired into politics by our message and asked me how I got to this level in my first attempt. I urge them to keep the faith. Don’t ever let the candle that has been lit in you dim. Our country needs your active participation in her affairs.

“We documented our grand vision for a brighter and better Anambra and presented it to our people with the energy to implement it. Though we may not have the opportunity in the immediate to get it started, we will be holding the government in power accountable to ensure that the welfare of the people is foremost in their actions at all times.

“I acknowledge that we could not have done this alone. I am a child of Grace. I thank the Almighty God who chose me for this mission for His abundant mercies and love.

“I thank all the courageous men and women who first believed in me, many of them without knowing me well. You are the heroes of our Ka Anambra Chawapu Movement. I also thank everyone who believed, even without meeting me, who heard our message and came out in full support.

“I am grateful to every single person who joined our movement and contributed in one way or the other. The thousands who showed us so much love, from youths and women in the grassroot, to those in the diaspora, to the Non Indigenes, various church groups across all denominations, market women, civil servants, artisans, and many more. Thank you for your prayers, your material, financial, and intellectual contributions. May the Lord reward you abundantly.

“I thank the leaders and pillars of our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), at the national (especially the PDP Governors), state and ward levels who stood by us and worked tirelessly to win the mandate of Ndi Anambra. I appreciate your amazing support and friendship.

“Most importantly, I thank the entire Ndi Anambra – home and abroad. The openness, love, and enthusiasm with which you received us, especially as we campaigned across the state, is one that my wife, my running mate and I will cherish forever.

“This election was fraught with a lot of short-comings on the part of various government institutions. The security agencies failed to provide a peaceful environment for campaigns to hold. On election day, they were absent from many polling centres leading to elections not holding or held in situations that allowed for chaos and fraud.

“The national electoral commission presented untrained and poorly trained staff who could not operate the voting machines in many places. They failed woefully in providing logistical support for their staff and so elections started very late in many places and did not hold in many others.

“The use of government funds and resources to corrupt, coerce, and intimidate voters, PDP party agents, and electoral officials was a major factor in determining the outcome of this election.

“All of these led to the disenfranchisement of the greater percentage of voters and staining the course of democracy. I will be dedicating time to champion the positive change we need to ensure that future elections are truly free and fair and that the will of the electorate prevails.

“Denominational politics was also a factor. We need to do a lot more to ensure that competence is never sacrificed on this altar, and that democracy is practiced in line with its truest tenets.

“In all, I am more determined to working for a better future for our children by remaining in active politics and rebuilding our party to be more united and more robust for those who come after us. Ka Anambra Chawapu. May God bless you all and bless Anambra State. Thank you”.

TNG reports Prof Soludo contested the governorship election against Ozigbo and Senator Andy Uba of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and emerged victorious.

The declaration of Soludo was, however, sequel to his victory after the successful conduct of the supplementary election in Ihiala local government on Tuesday.

The supplementary poll was conducted after the declaration of Saturday’s gubernatorial poll as inconclusive by the Returning Officer, Prof. Florence Obi, the Vice Chancellor, University of Calabar.

Obi in the early hours of Wednesday declared Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) winner after polling a total of112,229 votes.

He defeated his closest rival, Mr Ozigbo of the PDP, who scored 53,807 to emerge second. Sen. Andy Uba of the APC got a total of 43,285 votes to clinch the third position.

Anambra election: Why I’m supporting APGA – ADC candidate

The governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Chief Akachukwu Nwakpo, said he supported and voted for All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in the Ihiala supplementary election in Anambra, on Tuesday.

Nwakpo disclosed this to newsmen after voting at his polling unit 004 Ward 01 at Umuatani Hall, Okija, in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra.

He said that the results of the election announced so far reflected the wish and mandate of the people.

“We believe it is time to finish this election by helping the winning party to make it to the end, so that the military can leave and we can have a more relaxed environment for us to focus on issues that concern our communities.

“Also, the leadership of my party, ADC, agreed with what we have done because we are not in the supplementary election and we did not score or get enough votes to be competitive.

“APGA is also a sister party because the founding members of APGA founded ADC and I also came from APGA to ADC. More so, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo is my friend.

“So, I feel this is an opportunity to support one another and for us to build together and let our people be part of governance,” he said.

Nwakpo commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for ensuring the Bimodal Voters Accreditation system worked efficiently during the supplementary election.

“My assessment is so far, so good. Our people are more relaxed, less nervous and enthusiastic to vote but INEC officials arrived late.
“We were prepared to cast our votes since 10a.m but we were able to get accredited and vote at 2.p.m when they arrived.

“The BVAs worked efficiently today compared to what was experienced on Nov.6,” he said.

He also urged other governorship candidates and political parties to imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship, and be peaceful,” he said.

Meanwhile, a large turnout of voters was reported across all polling units in Ihiala Local Government Area of the state.

Chief Victor Oye, National Chairman of All Progressives Congress Alliance (APGA) has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for ensuring that Saturday’s Anambra governorship election was credible.

Oye said this in Awka on Sunday, saying Buhari has proven to be a father by giving the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) free hands to conduct the election without interference.

“President Muhammadu Buhari has always been a father by allowing INEC to conduct free, fair and credible election in the country.

“He will also insist on allowing the people’s will to prevail and not the other way round.

“Left to some other people, the election will have been rigged in favour of another party.

“But he has always tell them to allow the choice of the people to prevail, that is why APGA is willing the election,” Oye said.

“Anambra people are known to be peaceful, the violence we had sometime ago was imported, our people are not in any way associated with violence,” he said.

APGA accuses Uzodimma of sending fake election results to manipilate Anambra guber

Mr C. Don Adinuba, commissioner for information and public enlightenment, Anambra State, claims 35 buses from Imo State have been mobilised to carry fake election materials to rig the ongoing governorship election in the state.

He accused Imo State governor, Hope Uzodimma of being behind the plot.

According to him, “The Charles Chukwuma Soludo Campaign has just received credible intelligence that about 35 buses left Imo State for Anambra State with election materials about 45 minutes ago.

“The buses are accompanied by men in Nigerian Army combat dress.

“The mission, according to an insider who doesn’t want his name disclosed because of the sensitive nature of his job, is to substitute the election materials used in today’s Anambra State gubernatorial elections with those from Imo, and thus create the impression that the All progressives Congress (APC) is winning the vote.

“The whole enterprise, according to sources, is at the behest of the controversial Imo State governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, chairman of the Andy Uba Gubernatorial Campaign Council.

“Relevant bodies like the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the security agencies as well as election monitors, the media, civil society organizations and the international community are advised to watch out for what has appropriately been called the Hope Uzodimma invasion team in Anambra State.”
