APC aspirant plots fall of APGA in Anambra

All Progressives Congress (APC) aspirant in the upcoming Anambra governorship election, Mr Paul Chukwuma, has urged his campaign council to work towards claiming the state from All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

Chukwuma made the call on Wednesday in Umueri, Anambra East Local Government Area of the state during a meeting with his primary election campaign council.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled the Anambra  governorship election for November 8. It is one of the off-cycle polls in the nation’s election calendar.

The council comprises youth coalition and women groups in his country home.

“I thank all of you for how far you have come. However, there is still more to be done ahead to enable us dislodge the current government of the APGA in Anambra state.

“We have to remain focused on the goal which is to rescue Anambra state from the leadership of Chukwuma Soludo as governor to enable our people reap full dividends of democracy,” he said.

According to him, the team has to be at its best in the coming days, weeks and months to enable it achieve the task.

Responding, Mr Ifeanyi Ibezi, Director-General of the council assured Chukwuma that the campaign would take a new leap from January.

Ibezi, who expressed confidence in the journey, thanked the aspirant for his purposeful leadership and also thanked council members for their commitment.

Chukwuma is the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council of Benue State University, Makurdi, as well as the President of the Nigeria-Burundi Business Council.

  • Njoku accepts Supreme Court verdict on APGA leadership tussle

Njoku accepts Supreme Court verdict on APGA leadership tussle

Chief Edozie Njoku says he has resolved to abide by the Supreme Court judgment which removed him as the National Chairman of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

The Supreme Court had, on Wednesday, declared Sylvester Ezeokenwa as the national chairman of APGA, this bringing to an end the lingering leadership tussle which had rocked the party for years.

Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, had, in his judgment, restrained Njoku from parading himself as the APGA national chairman.

Omotosho, while delivering the judgment in a suit filed by APGA and Ezeokenwa, held that there was no valid court judgment that recognised Njoku as the party’s national chairman.

He held that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) erred by recognising the Njoku-led leadership of the party. Dissatisfied with the verdict, Njoku approached the Supreme Court to set it aside.

However, at Wednesday’s proceeding, the apex court dismissed the appeal for being frivolous and awarded N20 million for each of the three charges against him.

Reacting to the judgment at a news conference in Abuja, Njoku said that he believed in the rule of law and the verdict of the court.

“Everyone who knows me knows I believe in the rule of law and hierarchy. In any establishment, there must be a hierarchy. The hierarchy of the judiciary in Nigeria is the Supreme Court.

“We in Nigeria must learn that when the Supreme Court speaks, no matter how or what you think, you must obey it.

“We must be a country of law and order. Things cannot just be turned to suit you because you are uncomfortable. Things cannot just turn to suit Chief Edozie Njoku or Chief Henry Okechukwu or the secretary. We must follow the system,’’ he said.

Njoku said that as democrats, his removed executive members believed in the unity of Nigeria.

“We will do everything within our powers to make sure that there is peace in this country called Nigeria.

“But one thing I promise you is that you can never muffle the voice of the people. The people of Anambra State, in the next election, will speak, and it will be so resounding,’’ he said.

Njoku said that there would be anarchy in the states and the country if citizens decided to choose the judgments to obey or not to obey.

“All said and done, the Supreme Court has spoken and I truly believe in the Chief Justice of Nigeria who had made it clear in so many fora that she must bring sanity to the judiciary.

“I will not and I cannot be a clog in the hog. I cannot and I will not add to the pressure of those who are putting in relentless efforts to make sure that the judiciary can survive a very telling time,’’ he said.

Njoku commended the Supreme Court and its justices for following the right path in the journey.

He also commended the people of Anambra for keeping calm and accepting the court judgment in good faith, saying there must be an end to litigation.

“I’m happy that the Supreme Court said it is an internal democracy of the party. You can do whatever you want on the earth but you cannot change the grassroots.

“The grassroots will decide who are their leaders. And I promise you that Anambra will speak,’’ Njoku stated.

He also commended the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, even though his faction of the party had criticised, fought and taken him to court.

  • Supreme Court bars Njoku from parading himself as APGA national chair

Supreme Court bars Njoku from parading himself as APGA national chair

The Supreme Court, on Wednesday, restrained Chief Edozie Njoku from parading himself as national chairman, All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

A five-member panel of justices, led by Justice Stephen Adah, affirmed the emergence of Sly Ezeokenwa as the authentic national chairman of APGA.

The apex court, in two unanimous judgments, held that Njoku was wrongly laying claim to the party’s chairmanship position.

Justice Adah held that the earlier judgment on the appeal marked: SC/CV/687/2021, delivered on Oct. 14, 2021, which was corrected on March 24, 2023, and on which Njoku purportedly paraded to lay claim to APGA leadership, did not confer on him any enforceable rights.

The judge, who read the lead judgment, held that in the 2021 judgment, only declaratory reliefs were granted, which were not executory.

He also held that there was no order or orders in the 2021 judgment to be executed.

Justice Adah noted that in the earlier judgment, the Supreme Court particularly held that the issue of party’s leadership or who becomes the chairman of a political party was internal affairs of a political party and was not justiciable.

He further held that it was wrong for Njoku to have gone before the lower court to seek to enforce a judgment that had nothing to be enforced as no executory reliefs were granted.

Justice Adah, who urged judges of the lower courts to be cautious, held that the judges of the trial court and the Court of Appeal, who declared Njoku chairman of APGA were wrong to have heard the suit by Njoku.

He proceeded to set aside the judgment delivered by the Court of Appeal in Abuja on June 28, 2024, affirming the judgment of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), which had declared Njoku chairman of APGA.

The judgment in both appeals were applied to the third appeal, relating to the same issue of APGA leadership.

The apex court, therefore, awarded N20 million on each appeal against two members of Njoku faction (who are listed as 1st and 2nd respondents), bringing the total cost awarded in the three appeals to N60 million.

The three appeals were marked: SC/CV/824/2024, APGA  & another vs. Chief Victor Ike Oye & others; SC/CV/825/2024, Chief Victor Oye vs. Otunba Kamaru Lateef Ogidan & 2 others, and Chief Victor Ike Oye vs. Otunba Kamaru Lateef Ogidan & 2 others.

Justice James Omotosho of a Federal High Court in Abuja had, on Nov. 21, also restarted Njoku from parading himself as national chairman of APGA.

Reacting to the judgments, Ezeokenwa commended the judiciary for effectively putting an end to the leadership dispute in the party and affirming him and the Chairman.

He said that with its erudite judgments, given on Wednesday, the court had once again, proved that “it is indeed, the hope of the common man.”

“We should not always be saying bad things against the judiciary. Today, I am very proud of our judiciary as the last hope of the common man.

“Like I have always said, our judiciary will always come through to save our nation when the need arises.

“That is what it has done today with the erudite judgments delivered today by the Supreme Court concerning the leadership of our party.

“Like our lead counsel, Onyechi Ikpeazu, SAN said, what ought not to have taken place was created and has been dragged up to the Supreme Court.

‘It is unfortunate. Money has been expended and party’s  structures destabilised just because of someone’s selfish and inordinate ambition.

“The judgments today have affirmed the convention that brought us to office and that we are in charge of the running of the party’s affairs.

“So, there is no longer speculation or doubt about the actual leadership of APGA. By the judgments, I, Barrister Sly Ezeokenwa has been affirmed as the Chairman of APGA,” he said.

APGA faction lauds Tinubu over Bianca’s appointment

Mr Sly Ezeokenwa, the factional National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance(APGA), says the appointment of Mrs Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu as a minister is an audacious and laudable move by President Bola Tinubu.

Ezeokenwa, who was elected as APGA National Chairman in 2023 following the completion of a two-term eight years tenure by the former National Chairman, Chief Victor Oye, disclosed this on Friday in Abuja.

Tinubu had on Wednesday, appointed seven new ministers and assigned portfolios to them, subject to confirmation by the Senate. Mrs Odumegu-Ojukwu, was assigned the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs.

Ezeokeonwa said that as a father of the party, he felt very proud over Bianca’s appointment.

“Bianca is one of the most revered members of the party; very iconic; a woman with sterling qualities; wife of our foremost national leader.

“In life and in death, we have an external leader, the late Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu; and he is our spiritual leader because APGA is not your regular political party. I wish to commend Tinubu for making such laudable and audacious move.”

He said he had previously made calls on the need for the president to form a strong cabinet of technocrats who would drive his agenda effectively.

Ezeokenwa, a legal practitioner,  said he was in support of the president to succeed but something urgent must be done to revive the economy.

“I can tell that the economy of this country has taken the brunt for the past few years; nobody can shy away from the fact that Nigerians are suffering. No matter how one wants[ to play politics, the president has come out on different fora to admit that he understands the pains and agony of Nigerians: so, he understands the reality; the inflation trend is worrisome.

“In trying to turn things around, you must look beyond your party men; you must go beyond partisan politics; you go beyond party affiliations; fish out credible Nigerians who have what it takes; those technocrats and eggheads who can actually make a difference.

“Because at the end of the day, it is all about Nigerians; I want Tinubu to succeed; because if he succeeds, Nigeria will succeed; if he succeeds, the level of hunger in the country will wane.”

According to him, if the president succeeds, it will be better for the image of the country as investors will come in. He said that Nigeria should not just be number one in Africa but among the five leading economies in the world.

“We have what it takes; we have the vast human capital; so, I commend the president for making that very bold and audacious move; looking be[[yond his political party to invite people who have it takes to help in his renewed hope agenda.”

He added that there was need to decentralise Nigeria’s security architecture in order to address the myriad of security challenges facing the country.

On the crisis in the party, he said there was no fictionalisation in APGA as the party remained a united, indivisible family.

“Everything about politics is dynamism; and so, for APGA, we don’t lose sight of the fact that there can be issues; but the party will still thrive.

“What we have in APGA today is not fictionalisation; what we have is an attempt by some people who are not members of APGA trying to hijack the party though the back door,” he said.

APGA kicks, calls for cancellation of Benue LG election

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has called for the immediate cancellation of the just concluded Local Government (LG) polls in Benue State.

The Benue Chairman of APGA, Mr Joseph Ogli, made the call in an interaction with newsmen on Monday in Makurdi.

Ogli said that APC winning all 23 local government areas in the election was an embarrassment to the state and to Gov. Hyacinth Alia.

He said over N6 billion was released to the Benue State Independent Electoral Commission (BSIEC) for the conduct of the election that did not hold.

According to him, candidates were forced to pay between N250, 000 and N500, 000 outside screening fees, which different political parties paid.

“APGA in the state encouraged its’ members to contest for the local government election on the ground that Benue has a clergy and a priest as governor.

“We believed that he would provide a level playing field for all political parties to contest in state.

“We were shocked that a clergy can conduct an election that APGA or any other political party cannot win a councillor were we had popularity.

“This is purely a setback for our democracy and a miscarriage for the third arm of government.

“We are calling on all lovers of democracy to speak against this “afternoon robbery” called an election by the BSIEC chairman who has succeeded in destroying the integrity of the governor,” Ogli said.

Ogli said the party candidate, Mrs Winifred Azumi, the chairmanship candidate for Agatu Local Government area, would seek legal redress in court and called on their supporters to remain calm.

The local government election, held on Saturday, September 28, was conducted by the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC).

The results were announced late Sunday in Awka by ANSIEC Chairman, Genevieve Osakwe.

Osakwe confirmed that APGA secured all 21 chairmanship positions, as well as all councillorship seats in the state’s 21 local government areas, as declared at the ward levels.

She described the election as the fairest, noting that the commission meticulously collated and analyzed the results to avoid any errors.

During the announcement, no opposition candidates, political parties, or their agents were present at the ANSIEC office where the election results were declared.

The ANSIEC chairman, who read out the total votes and names of the APGA candidates, declared them winners and returned elected, having received the highest number of votes.

Osakwe said: “This is to affirm the result of the chairmanship and councillorship election held on September 28, 2024. The commission carefully collated and analysed the results to ensure that there were no mistakes.

  • APGA Chairman, Njoku, threatens to suspend Soludo

APGA Chairman, Njoku, threatens to suspend Soludo

The National Chairman, All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Edozie Njoku, on Wednesday, threatened to suspend Gov. Charles Soludo of Anambra over alleged anti-party activities.

Chief Njoku made the remarks after attending a proceeding at the Federal High Court in Abuja in a suit filed by some persons allegedly being sponsored by Gov. Soludo against the party.

He said that 80 per cent of the APGA hierarchy had agreed on the names of  Soludo and others to be suspended for anti party activities.

He said others’ names would be announced by the party between today and Thursday in a bid to sanitise and instill discipline, decorum and orderliness in the party.

“Remember what the Chairman of the APGA BoT said, that we the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party should take action so that we don’t look like toothless bulldogs.

“One of those people to be suspended is the governor, and I’m saying, are we going to suspend the only governor we have?

“But if the only governor we have is pretending or playing to the gallery, making these honest people to go in and commit anti-party activities, we must nip this in the bud,” he said.

According to Njoku, the suit filed here is aimed at securing an interim injunction for INEC to stop recognising me as the authentic national chairman of APGA.

“Unfortunately for them, the court presided over by Justice James Omotosho had refused to grant the application, insisting that they must put the national chairman of APGA and others on notice,” he said.

He alleged that Soludo had thwarted every move by the Supreme Court and INEC to recognise the NWC to restore peace in the party.

“If you remember, just about a week ago or two weeks ago, we just left the Court of Appeal where a stay was applied at the Court of Appeal to stop me from being recognised by INEC.

“Despite the fact that the Supreme Court said in their own words that the removal of Chief Edozie Njoku as national chairman of APGA is not justiciable, they still came to court.

“They went to Awka and filed a suit, suddenly the judge in Awka was very smart, and he pulled out of it.

“They came to the Federal High Court again. They filed another one behind our back.

“They were applying for an interim injunction behind the back of the national chairman of the party, behind the back of APGA, behind the back of the orders of the Court of Appeal.

“They went forward behind the back of APGA and INEC and INEC has written that everything they said is not true,” he said.

He said if a suit would be filed in court, it must be backed by the authority of the party.

LG election: APGA aspirants ask for fresh primaries in Anambra

Some chairmanship aspirants of the All  Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Onitsha South Local Government Area of Anambra, has urged  Gov. Charles Soludo of the state, to call for fresh primaries for the area.

The three aspirants — Mr Chukwuma Akajiobi, Mr Onyebuchi Obi and Promise Egbeji — made the plea on Thursday in Onitsha at a meeting. They alleged imposition of the incumbent Transition Chairman, Mr Emeka Orji as APGA chairmanship candidate for the Sept. 28 local government elections in the state at the primaries.

Addressing the crowd at the meeting, APGA aspirant, Akajiobi, pleaded with Soludo to dismiss claims of conduct of primaries that purportedly brought out Orji as winner. He noted that there was no APGA primary, rather it was an alleged imposition of Orji.

“Our governor is a product of democratic process. We plead that primaries be conducted for us in Onitsha South Local Government prior to the council poll. We commend the governor for his commitment in delivering democracy dividends through strategic infrastructural development to good people of Onitsha South,” he said.

Another chairmanship aspirant, Obi, also alleged imposition, urging the stakeholders at the meeting not to relent in their support for democracy. He said that the nomination of Orji for the forth coming local government election was not democratic.

In his contribution, Egbeji, who is also a chairmanship aspirant, explained that he had touched a lot of people in the local government through his foundation. Egbeji stressed that his aim for aspiring for Onitsha South Local Government Area chairmanship seat was to support the Anambra government by taking the message of “Solution Government” to the grassroots.
