Fuel subsidy: Buhari owes Nigerians immediate apology, restitution

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to tender unreserved apology to the entire nation for allowing his administration to deceive Nigerians while secretly running an over-bloated and sleazy oil subsidy regime as now exposed by the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

In a statement on Friday by the spokesman for the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, the party said its demand was predicated on the confession by the NNPC Managing Director, Mele Kyari, that the Buhari administration had been running an over-bloated subsidy, which is against the national interest.

“Our party holds that Kyari’s open confession is a direct vindication of our stand that the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led administration has been neck deep in serial oil fraud”, the statement said.

The party noted that Buhari had openly castigated previous PDP administrations and announced that oil subsidy existed only as a fraud whereas he had secretly continued to preside over an over-bloated subsidy regime through which over N14 trillion belonging to Nigerians have been stolen.

The NNPC boss had, during the week, said that there were many things wrong with what he described as under-recovery, which he said was so over-bloated, “because we are subsidising the whole of West Africa. That has to stop”.

Further faulting the subsidy regime under the Buhari administration, the PDP said: “It is clear to all that the Buhari administration had not only been covering sleazy oil subsidy regime but also an under-recovery fraud with an international dimension.

“It is even more distressing that that such monumental racket against our nation had been going on under an administration whose leaders parade as saints while swimming in an ocean of corruption.

“Our party charges the Buhari Presidency to immediately name the West African countries that it claims to be subsidizing fuel for and the amount so far spent in such hazy enterprise.

“This is so because there are already insinuations in the public space that the so-called West African countries could be the private purses of corrupt APC leaders and the cabal in the Buhari Presidency.

“It is however saddening that President Buhari had allowed such hemorrhaging of our economic bloodstream into private vaults.

“Now that the Managing Director of the NNPC has summoned the courage to make this confession, after our party counseled government officials to stop lying to Nigerians about trillions of naira claimed to have been paid for subsidy, what is expected of the Buhari Presidency is to, without any further delay, apologise to Nigerians, make restitutions and take immediate steps to recover the over N14 trillion siphoned in oil scams under its watch”.

  • Amotekun: Tender public apology to Kanu – IPOB tells Ohanaeze, S’East govs

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has demanded an unreserved apology from the South-East governors and the Ohanaeze Ndigbo over their alleged roles in its prosecution and proscription.

The group said the governors and the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation must tender the apology to its leader, Nnamdi Kanu and the entire IPOB family.

In a statement on Saturday by the Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, the group said recent events indicated the Igbo leaders’ sudden reverse decision to support the moves they (IPOB) had fought for that led to its proscription.

The pro-Biafran group argued that the launch of Operation Amotekun security outfit by the South-West governors, was akin to idea it’s leader initiated in the South- East which the Igbo leaders condemned.

The group insisted that it should be de-proscribed in view of the unfolding events in the country.

The statement partly read, “We the global family of the Indigenous People of Biafra ably led by our great and indomitable leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu commend South West governors, elders, stakeholders and politicians for their doggedness and courage to protect their people and their region from evil hands.

“This is not the first time in recent weeks that our leader’s(Kanu’s) position and approach has been vindicated by events and utterances from other ethnic groups within Nigeria.

” The inescapable truth remains that Bishop Kukah’s commendable utterances about the Jihadi intent of the present regime in Nigeria and formation of a Yoruba vigilante by OPC are all lines of reasoning and event consistently canvassed and championed by IPOB in the past. The fact remains that Nigeria as presently constituted is the greatest threat to life and peace.

“The Yoruba decision and effort to launch Operation Amotekun security outfit just like our leader launched Biafra Security Service in 2017 is most commendable.

“What we find horribly appalling however is that those who were at the forefront of misrepresenting and condemning our leader for having the vision and foresightedness to challenge terrorism in Nigeria are today praise singing the introduction of Amotekun.

“Even the treacherous Ohanaeze Ndigbo and South East Governors’ Forum that actively connived with their masters to launch a deadly military invasion of Biafraland on the back of the launch of BSS are today openly praising Yoruba leaders for backing OPC’s Amotekun project when they themselves heartlessly sold out IPOB for a pot of porridge.

“IPOB wholeheartedly welcome Amotekun and say good morning to those who out of ignorance, poor sense of vision, lack of reasoning and self consuming jealousy fought against the formation BSS. They should cover their faces in shame if they have any face left after this.

“We believe the time has come for all those who ignorantly questioned the modus operadi of IPOB and the vision of Biafra liberation as boldly preached by our leader to tender an unreserved public apology.”

  • Amaechi apologises to Nigerians over suspension of free train ride

The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi on Friday apologised to Nigerians over the suspension of the Iju-Abeokuta free train ride during the 2019 general elections.

Amaechi tendered the apology during the monthly rail inspection of the Lagos-Ibadan modernisation project in Ibadan.

He said that the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) suspended the three months free train ride due to security and safety of passengers.

It was suspended by the Chinese and the excuse they gave me was that they cannot allow it run because of safety, since they have not completed the second line but they are almost through with it.

It is almost completed from Iju to Abeokuta. I want to apologise to Nigerians that they suspended it when they left the country, which I didn’t envisage, they will go back soon,” Amechi said.

Speaking on his passion for the project, Amaechi said that the responsibility was given to him by President Muhammadu Buhari, which must be delivered to create jobs and boost the economy.

I know you will say I’m stressed up but as a minister, I have a responsibility passed to me by Mr President and I must deliver on it.

Also, the economy of Nigeria can be driven most importantly, if we can link the seaport to hinterland because when cargoes come, they must go.

The more you are able to move goods and services to hinterland, the more you will create jobs and the more you create jobs, the more growth that you will have and that is my drive,” he said.

  • Saraki’s sister, Gbemisola apologises to Kwarans on national TV, says ‘My brother failed you’

Saraki’s sister, Gbemisola apologises to Kwarans on national TV, says ‘My brother failed you’

The younger sister of Bukola Saraki, Nigeria’s Senate President, Gbemisola Saraki, caused a stir on national television (TV Continental) when she apologised to Kwarans for her brother’s alleged abysmal performance while in office as governor of the state.

The younger Saraki criticized her brother’s performance and asked for forgiveness from Kwarans while appearing at TVC’s”Your View” on Thursday.

Recall that Saraki lost his bid to return to the Senate and may not be active politically for the next four years if the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, whom he supported does not succeed in his bid to challenge President Muhammadu Buhari’s electoral victory.

Atiku lost to Buhari at the last presidential polls but is challenging the victory in court.

The Saraki dynasty in Kwara since 1979 has produced six governors from the time of late Olusola Saraki who is the father of the Senate President.

The Saraki structure was strong force that except you aligned with it politically, you were not likely to succeed as a politician in Kwara State.

The Senate President was elected governor of Kwara in 2003 through the help of his father.

After his tenure, he refused to support the candidature of his sister, Gbemisola. Instead, he supported the incumbent governor, Ahmed Abdulfatai, who floored his sister against the will of his father.

In the build-up to the 2015 election, Saraki joined other aggrieved governors of the PDP to form the nPDP. The nPDP would later join other parties to form the All Progressives Congress (APC).

That did not affect his control of the Kwara’s political machinery as Saraki’s new party, APC, won the 2015 general elections in Kwara.

He began to face challenges after the 2015 elections when he defied the APC, to emerge the Senate President, working in cahoots with PDP lawmakers.

He, eventually, left the APC for the PDP in 2018 and sought the presidential ticket of the latter. He lost at the primary to Atiku.

Saraki was floored in the last elections. While the Senate President failed to deliver to PDP in the the presidential, national assembly and governorship election, he also lost his re-election to the Senate.

With the magic of the political slogan, “Oto ge” (enough is enough), the PDP lost in all the 2019 elections in Kwara.

Reacting to the development, Gbemisola Saraki, herself a former senator, said she was disappointed with the way her brother governed the state.

I am disappointed that Bukola Saraki did not do well when he was a governor in Kwara State having studied in the United Kingdom. Bukola and I studied in the United Kingdom, he knows all the good things in the United Kingdom. We think (thought) he should (would) reciprocate that in Kwara when he became the Governor but he failed them.

Even as a Senate President, he has not carried the people of Kwara along. I am not happy the way my brother served Kwarans.”

She appealed to the newly elected state governor, Abdurahman Abdurazaq, to give her the “opportunity to correct the family wrong to avoid nemesis”.

I just want the governor elect to give me a chance to serve the people of Kwara. Just to say we are sorry. I don’t need appointment. Nemesis will catch up. I don’t want nemesis to catch up on my children, my grandchildren or upon myself. That’s why I am saying the truth now.”

  • South-South group congratulates Atiku, demands apology

South-South group congratulates Atiku, demands apology

Some youth leaders from the South- South geo-political zone, under the auspices of Niger Delta Coalition for Peace and Progress (NDCPP), has congratulated Alhaji Atiku Abubakar over his victory at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential primaries.
The group, in a statement on Sunday signed by Charles Kalada Dan-Jumbo, however, urged the presidential hopeful to consider apologising to the geo-political zone over events leading to 2015 polls.
According to the group, the successful hosting of the presidential primary in Port Harcourt is an indication that the region is peaceful under the leadership of a PDP state government.
They also commended Gov. Nyisom Nwike of Rivers, Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta, who chaired the Convention Planning Committee, as well as Prince Uche Secondus, PDP National Chairman, for successfully hosting the convention.
“Atiku, however, owes the zone and former President Goodluck Jonathan an apology for leaving the PDP in the build up to the 2015 elections, which denied the region a second term at the Presidency.
“Such apology is necessary, even though the zone has forgiven Atiku,” the statement read in part.
The group also noted that the exodus of Atiku and other PDP leaders to the All Progressives Congress (APC) was partly responsible for the loss of the 2015 presidential election.
“Suffice it to say that the geo-political zone has always played a pivotal role in the shaping of the character and content of the nation.
“The just-concluded primaries, adjudged the best so far, was midwifed by Niger Delta people and hosted in the zone.
“This can be displayed in the key roles great sons and daughters of the region have played in the history of the country.
“Painfully, we all pretend like yesterday never existed, especially those of us who were key actors in disposing of the previous government.
“Today, we must learn to apologise for our wrong deeds to rebuild trust, else everything we present now is on a fallacious foundation.
“Apart from Atiku, we also call on others, including the Senate President Bukola Saraki as well as Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, Rabiu Kwankwaso, among others, to tender an apology to the region and former President Jonathan, for denying the region of a well deserved second tenure.
“Their action was due to impatience and misconstrued perceptions, especially since that same government took us from a weak economy to the number one economy in Africa.”
The group stated that the efforts and support toward the emergence of Atiku by leaders of the South-South zone was an indication that they had put the events preceding the 2015 elections behind them.

  • BREAKING: Police IG replies senate says ‘I owe no one apology’

BREAKING: Police IG replies senate says ‘I owe no one apology’

Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has issued a statement in response to the resolution passed by the Nigerian senate today, where he was pronounced as an enemy of democracy who is unfit to hold public office in the country.

The Police IG who replied the senate in a statement released by the Nigerian Police Force accused the senate of condoning criminality why stressing that the attempt made by the legislative body to intimidate him is fruitless.

Idris who shunned senate’s invitation on three different occasions stressed that he owes no individual or group apology over his act.

He urged the public to disregard the statement of the senate and promised to continue to discharge his duties in the interest of the general public.

Full statement from Nigeria Police Force [IGP vs Senate]

The attention of the Nigeria Police Force has been drawn to the media reportage of the Senate’s resolution on Senate Order Paper of today, Wednesday, 9th May, 2018 after a closed door session that the “Senate declares the Inspector General of Police, IGP Ibrahim k. Idris, NPM, mni, as enemy of democracy and unfit to hold any public office within and outside the country”.

It is urgently imperative that the Nigeria Police Force respond to this resolution of the Senate which is a deliberate blackmail, witch-hunting, unfortunate and mischievous.

In accordance with the extant laws in Nigeria, the functions, duties and responsibilities of the Inspector General of Police as stated in Section 215(1a) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended, and the Police Act and Regulations Section 309(1) can also be carried out as mentioned in sections 7(1),312(1), 313(2) of the Police Act and Regulations by a senior officer of the Force of the Rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police or an Assistant Inspector General of Police who if permitted by the Inspector General of Police to act on his behalf or represent him in an official capacity at any official function, event or programme within and outside Nigeria can do so in consonant with the provisions of the Police Act and Regulations.

It is on the basis of the above that when on the 25th of April, 2018, the Senate invited the Inspector-General of Police to appear before it on the 26thof April 2018, in respect of the felonious offenses for which Sen. Dino Melaye was taken into Police custody, investigated and arraigned in a Court of Competent Jurisdiction in Lokoja, but because the Inspector-General of Police was on official assignment with the President of Federal Republic of Nigeria to Bauchi on same date, he delegated the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Department of Operations, Assistant Inspector-Generals of Police and some Commissioners of Police conversant with the matter to brief the Senate.

The delegated Officers went with a brief of the Inspector-General of Police on the matter to the Senate to enable the Senate appreciate the issues raised to guide their resolutions on the matter but the Senate refused to listen to the Officers delegated by the Inspector-General of Police in line with his powers recognized by both the Constitution and the Police Act and Regulations.

The Senate again on the 26th of April 2018 wrote the Inspector-General of Police re-inviting him to appear before the Senate in person on the 2nd of May, 2018 but this time around the IGP was on official assignment to Birnin-Gwari Area of Kaduna State in company of the General Officer Commanding, One Division, Nigerian Army Kaduna, Major General Mohammed Mohammed to attend to some very serious security matters of National Importance, but he promptly delegated the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Research and Planning, Assistant Inspectors General of Police and Commissioners of Police to represent him and brief the Senate on the same subject matter but the Senate again refused to accord them audience insisting that the Inspector-General of Police must appear in person.

On the 8th of May, 2018, the Inspector General of Police sent a letter to the President of the Senate, Federal Republic of Nigeria signed by the Commissioner of Police, Legal and Prosecution Department, explaining why he would not be appearing before the Senate on the 9th of May, 2018 due to legal restraint as a result of pending cases before the courts filed: (i) by Senator Dino Melaye against the IGP and the Nigeria Police Force in the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja in suit No. CV/1610/18 slated for hearing on the 11th day of May, 2018.

(ii) by the Inspector General of Police against the Senate in the Federal High Court, Abuja in suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/457/2018 adjourned to 31st May, 2018 for hearing.

It is on record that consequent on the confession of criminal offences indicting Senator Dino Melaye by the principal suspect KABIRU SAIDU a.k.a OSAMA “31 YRS”, The Nigeria Police Force, sent a letter of investigation activities/invitation dated 2ndMarch, 2018 addressed to the Senate President, Federal Republic of Nigeria informing and requesting him to release Senator Dino Melaye to report to Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Command on the 7th of March, 2018 to answer to criminal offences of Conspiracy and Unlawful Possession of Prohibited Firearms levelled against him, this is to enable the Police Investigation Team carryout a discreet and thorough investigation into the case. But Senator Dino Melaye refused to honour the Police invitation.

It is pertinent that the Nigeria Police Force informs the members of the General Public that the reasons for which the Senate has summoned the Inspector General of Police is official and not personal, and the 1999 constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended and the Police Act and Regulations allowed the IGP to delegate Deputy Inspector General of Police or Assistant Inspector General of Police to represent him.

Consequently, the action of the Senate in its resolution against the IGP today is a deliberate blackmail, witch-hunting with mischievous motives to hand-twist the IGP to pervert the end of justice in a felonious and serious offenses of Criminal Conspiracy and Unlawful Possession of Prohibited Firearms for which Senator Dino Melaye who was indicted by two (2) Principal Suspects (Kabiru Seidu A.K.A OSAMA, Nuhu Salisu A.K.A SMALL) arrested for several cases of kidnappings and armed robberies in Kogi State are already standing trial in a court of competent jurisdiction.

It is important to correct the impression created in the minds of the people from the Senate’s resolution that the IGP is not and will not be an enemy to democracy. It is also of significant note to state that IGP Ibrahim K. Idris, NPM, mni, has served meritoriously for above Ten (10) years in the United Nations Peace Keeping Operations in several countries unblemished. The Nigeria Police Force is the first defender of Democracy and all democratic institutions in Nigeria and will continue to do so.

It is factual and verifiable that Senator Dino Melaye was discharged and certified fit to stand trial by the National Hospital, Abuja before he was arraigned in Chief Magistrate Courts in Wuse, Abuja and Lokoja.

The Inspector General of Police and the Nigeria Police Force will not be deterred by blackmail from any individual or group no matter how highly placed from the enforcement of Law and Order and ensuring that the Rule of Law prevails.

No matter whose Ox is gored.

The Nigeria Police Force, therefore, owes no apology to any individual or groups in its effort to ensure preservation of law and order, supremacy of the law of the land, and make sure that all Nigerians are subject to the same law, no matter what their position is in the society.

The General Public is hereby implored to disregard and discountenance the resolution of the Senate on the IGP as a deliberate blackmail, witch-hunting and mischievously aimed at casting aspersions on the hard earned integrity of the Inspector General of Police and the Nigeria Police Force.

The Nigeria Police Force as a law abiding organization will continue to hold the Senate of Federal Republic of Nigeria in high esteem but wishes to impress on the Senate not to harbour criminal elements among its fold or condone criminality. The Force will not be intimidated by any individual, groups or institution, constituent or otherwise to abdicate from its constitutional responsibilities of protection of lives and property and due enforcement of the rule of law, and law and order across the Country.

  • Nigerian youths are lazy comment: Buhari goofed, should tender apology – APC Senator

Senator representing Kaduna Central (All Progressives Congress, APC) on the floor of the Senate, Shehu Sani has said President Muhammadu Buhari erred on his recent statement at the Commonwealth meeting on Wednesday that ‘Nigerian youths are lazy, uneducated and want freebies.’

The outspoken senator, however, advised the president to accept his mistake and tender his apologies to the Nigerian youths.

Sani said this in a Facebook post on Friday. He also requested that the president tell the youths what he had done for them and what he would do for them in future.

His post reads: “The President should simply withdraw the statement on the youths and apologize; and tell them what he will do for them in addition to what he had done for them. The President spin doctors are trying to spray fragrances on the feces and lace the dung with olive oil, it’s absurd. The President is a human being, he can gaffe and should be forgiven and should not be sent to the political guillotine.

As for the Youths, the challenge is to pick the baton and lead and stop holding the Alsatian Dogs of the political elite. The President echos the perception of the bourgeoisie power elites, the youths must rise against it.”

  • Apology: Nigerians can’t trust you again – Presidency tells PDP

The Presidency on Friday said Nigerians will never trust the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) again despite tendering their apologies for mistakes committed for the sixteen years they (the PDP) held sway as ruling party.

This was revealed in a statement by President Muhammadu Buhari’s spokesperson, Garba Shehu.

Recall that the party’s national chairman, Uche Secondus had apologised on behalf of the PDP for all wrongs committed by the party while it ruled Nigeria for 16 years.

The position of the Presidency on Friday reaffirmed an earlier reaction by the Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, who said the PDP should complement its apology by returning all the funds looted from public treasury under its watch.

Shehu in the statement said the point made by the Minister of Information, “is apt and on cue, that there are heavy moral duties that go with apologies if the culprits want to be taken seriously”.

The Presidency said PDP is desperate to recapture power because it no longer has unhindered access to national resources for private use and its apology should be seen in this context.

The government also said PDP had not even acknowledged the fact that it plundered the national economy.

“Even desperate thieves apologize because they are caught and not because they are incapable of repeating the crime if they had another opportunity,” the statement said.

“We believe that the PDP should not only apologize for the imposition of candidates, and the culture of impunity, but must also come clean and acknowledge that they participated in large scale corruption and massive diversions of public funds to private pockets while poverty was ravaging the ordinary Nigerians,” the Presidency said.

The government also challenged individual PDP leaders to publicly and voluntarily tell Nigerians how much they “stole” and then agree to cough up their illegal acquisitions of wealth if they want their apology to be taken seriously.

It said apology born out of desperation to recapture power without a desire to admit how much they stole and the reluctance to return the loot is morally hollow.

“This goes beyond rebranding. Nigerians are not interested in brands. They want their money back,” it said.

“For such apology to gain acceptance, the offenders must first of all show remorse; then return that which was unlawfully taken or restore the damage caused the nation; and commit to never doing the wrong they did again.

“The PDP has done none of these for them to be taken seriously by anyone,” the statement said.

The government also condemned PDP’s response to Mr. Mohammed’s statement.

It said instead of addressing the issues raised by the Minister, the PDP veered off to accuse the Buhari administration of borrowing money, “but failed, in that regard to admit that they borrowed to steal while Buhari administration is borrowing to set up long-delayed infrastructure”.

“They accused the President of unevenness, of inflaming ethnic and religious tensions, when it is on record that they gave this country its divisive president who chose the hallowed premises of places of worship to read important national statements.

“President Buhari never fails in his duty as the Chief Security Officer of the nation. He acts fast whenever and wherever there are incidents by ordering law-enforcement agencies to do their job and fact-finding mission to give him actionable reports,” the statement said.

It said PDP’s uncaring attitude to these matters, including the kidnapping of 270 girls from Chibok was the hallmark of the long years of misrule.

Another issue of moral and political significance, the statement said, is about the recent disclosure by U.S. investigators that the PDP government engaged in massive data theft that included the hacking of Candidate Muhammadu Buhari’s personal data before the last general elections.

It said PDP’s continued silence on this “reprehensible heist” only goes to confirm their remorselessness even as more and more facts are emerging that the same unfair method was the modus operandi that they used to capture political power in previous elections.
