    Jonathan’s ex-finance minister, Okonjo-Iweala gets Commonwealth appointment

Nigeria’s former Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has been appointed into a High Level Group on Governance of the Commonwealth Secretariat.

Prof. Ben Maloney, Communications Officer, Commonwealth Secretariat, said in a statement that the High Level Group would make recommendations on governance of the Commonwealth Secretariat.

The Commonwealth, however, denied that the group was constituted to secretly begin considering who might succeed the Queen as its head.

At their last Summit in Malta, Commonwealth heads of government directed the Secretary-General to form the Group.

Today members are discussing the scope of the group’s work and the areas of governance it will examine over the coming months.

The process is open and the High Level Group reports to the heads.

The issue of succession of the Head of the Commonwealth is not part of the Group’s mandate,” the statement said.

The group is chaired by Anote Tong, former President of Kiribati from 2003 to 2016.

Okonjo-Iweala, the Coordinating Minister of the Economy during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan, is among the seven-member group.

Others include Lord Howell, former British Energy Secretary; Louise Frechette, former UN Deputy Secretary-General; and Robert Hill, former Australian Defence Minister.

Dame Miller, former Deputy Prime Minister of Barbados and Dr George Vella, former Foreign Minister of Malta are also members of the group.

The group operates independently of the London-based Commonwealth Secretariat and would report only to the heads of Commonwealth governments.

However, further members may be appointed, the Secretariat said.

The group is expected to report to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in London in April, which is likely to be the last that the Queen would attend.

  • Sterling Bank appoints new Managing Director

Sterling Bank Plc has appointed Abubakar Suleiman as its new Managing Director/ Chief Executive Officer (CEO). The new bank chief was before his appointment, the bank’s Executive Director, Finance & Strategy, a role he has served in since May 2012.

The lender also announced that its founding Director and long-serving CEO, Yemi Adeola, has notified the Board of Directors of his desire to retire with effect from 1 April 2018 after over 14 years of service on the Board.

Adeola’s banking career started in the then Nigeria International Bank Ltd now Citibank Nigeria Ltd in 1988 where he served in various capacities and rose to the position of Executive Director in 1998, one of the youngest officers and indeed one of the first Nigerian nationals to be appointed in that capacity with the Citigroup Inc’s Nigeria unit between February 1998 and May 2003.

In July 2003, Adeola became the Deputy Managing Director (DMD) of our legacy component, Trust Bank of Africa Limited. He was instrumental to the formation of Sterling Bank in 2006, served as Integration Director in the immediate post-merger phase and up until 2007 as Executive Director covering Commercial & Institutional Banking and later Corporate Banking prior to becoming CEO.

Chairman of the Board of Directors, Sterling Bank Plc, Asue Ighodalo, said: ‘In 2008, Adeola was appointed to the role of substantive CEO. Since that appointment, he has overseen a period of strong growth in market share and profitability with the institution moving from the 23rd ranked bank measured by assets to the top half of the domestic banking market”.

Additionally, Adeola and his team have navigated multiple economic and banking credit cycles with great skill, sound judgment and outstanding professionalism often thriving in the most difficult conditions evidenced by the emergence of the Bank as a consolidator in the 2009 to 2011 cycle despite its modest capital base and distribution footprint at the time, and its continuing success in growing organically thereafter.

“More than anything else, Adeola’s legacy is reflected in the excellent professional reputation of the Bank;” the stability of its Board and Management – something rarely seen in merged institutions; and the overall strength of its institutional governance, all of which are achievements that I have no doubt that the new leadership team will build upon and extend even further”

Continuing, he said: “On behalf of the Board and all our colleagues, I thank first and foremost his family for their sacrifice, and Adeola himself for his outstanding service to the bank and exceptional leadership while trusting that we can continue to call upon his counsel as ‘Emeritus CEO’, notable shareholder and friend of the Bank”.

Suleiman said: “I am deeply humbled but delighted to be stepping into the CEO role at this time. Over the past decade under Adeola, our share of the banking market has grown significantly, and our brand has become established in the marketplace. I look forward to working with the Board and my colleagues in Management towards building on the excellent foundation already in place to deliver superior value for the benefit of all our stakeholders’.

Adeola said: ‘Our bank has grown materially in all respects over the past decade moving from being a marginal player on the fringes, to an established operator trusted by millions of people today. The achievements highlighted by the Chairman in his remarks have required huge personal sacrifice on the part of many people. I am extremely grateful to all of them for their support and know that Suleiman and his team can continue to count on this support in the months and years to come”.

  • 2019: PDP demands Ameachi’s resignation over appointment as DG, Buhari Campaign Organisation

2019: PDP demands Ameachi’s resignation over appointment as DG, Buhari Campaign Organisation

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday demanded the resignation of the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi following his appointment as the Director General of President Muhammadu Buhari’s 2019 campaign.

The opposition party the President and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of being insensitive to the plight of Nigerians.

The statement reads: “If the APC has any strand of dignity, then Amaechi must resign as the Minister of Transportation, having been appointed and already functioning as the DG of Buhari’s campaign.

“Under the constitution of Nigeria, Amaechi cannot combine the job of a minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria with another responsibility as the DG of a campaign organisation.

“Amaechi’s action, in accepting the job while still holding office as minister, is in clear breach of the oath of office and the oath of allegiance which he swore in line with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (As amended).”

The party noted that Amaechi had started to function as the DG by holding meetings with some governors on the APC platform.

The PDP recalled that when the ex-Minister of Works, Tony Anenih was appointed to head the campaign of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, he resigned his appointment as minister.

The party expressed concern that the APC is interested in establishing a re-election campaign when the people are suffering.

Recall that Ameachi as governor in 2014 also functioned as DG of Buhari/Osinbajo campaign organisation.

Neither the Presidency nor the minister has reacted to the opposition party’s demand.

  • Buhari’s appointment of dead people shows appreciation of service – BYO

The Buhari Youth Organisation (BYO) has urged Nigerians to show understanding over the seeming shortcomings in the recent board appointments of government parastal agencies and departments by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The appeal followed the criticisms that trailed the list, which included the duplication of names and appointment of dead persons.

The Lagos State chapter of the group made the appeal in a statement jointly signed by Mr. AbdulWaheed Odunuga, the coordinator; and Mr. Adekunle Aderibigbe, General Secretary, on Tuesday in Lagos.

BYO commends President Muhammadu Buhari on the recent published appointments as a laudable effort that had waited too long to be welcomed.

The youth organisation is appealing to Nigerians to be patient with the Federal Government on the shortcomings and should all focus on the goals.

We are also appealing to Nigerians to treat the deceased appointees’ inclusion as a posthumous recognition and appreciation by the government for the services rendered by the great Nigerians.

This will make the survivors of the deceased families proud of the noticed sacrificial efforts of the compatriots,” the group said.

  • COTRIMCO chair: Salami writes CJN, rejects appointment to monitor graft cases

Former President of the Court of Appeal (PCA) Justice Ayo Salami (retd) has rejected his appointment as the Chairman of the Corruption and Financial Crime Cases Trial Monitoring Committee (COTRIMCO) based on principle and conscience.

He is believed to have been convinced that the committee may not work as “efficiently expected” because of the businesses of some members.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen had on September 27 named Justice Salami as the chair of COTRIMCO which was set up by the National Judicial Council (NJC).

The appointment was based on the decision of the NJC at its 82nd meeting in Abuja.

Justice Salami is said to be uncomfortable with the composition of the 15-man committee.

The panel is said to include some members who had been implicated in some conflicting challenges between the bench and the bar.

Although, Salami was out of the country when he was appointed, he sought audience with the CJN upon his return.

It was learnt that after discussing his reservations with the CJN, he wrote to reject the appointment.

A Supreme Court sources confirmed that Justice Salami had “thrown in the towel”.

The source, who spoke in confidence, said the CJN might have to brief members of the NJC to search for another credible chairman.

Justice Salami is said to have consulted widely with leaders on the Bench and in the Bar before resolving with his family to reject the offer.

A source said: “I think Salami felt that a few members of the committee had been entrenched in the intrigues in the nation’s Judiciary.

He believes that as the chairman of the committee, he will not have the authority to keep those members in check.

So, instead of creating unnecessary problem for himself without any place to run to, he opted to stay away from the committee.

In fact, while he was still being asked by colleagues to give the appointment a chance, there was controversy over the reinstatement of a former chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms Task Team, Mr. Abdulrasheed Abdullahi Maina. Salami just said he won’t accept this offer.

He, however, took time to meet with the CJN personally to thank him for the honour and why he cannot accept the job. He made it known that he had no grudges against the CJN.”

But another source said: “None of the 15 members of the committee has been indicted in any way. The CJN was meticulous in composing the committee. Even where there were imputations, some members of the committee came out clearly to clarify a few things.

Being a committee of the NJC, there is no way the CJN will allow any member of the committee to either undermine Justice Salami or the mandate of the panel.

If His Lordship, Justice Salami, has chosen to reject the appointment, the CJN will certainly look for a meritorious legal giant like him.”

  • Ibori’s appointment into PDP Convention Committee and APC hypocrisy By Lere Olayinka

    By Lere Olayinka

Let me help the APC goons running their mouths about PDP inclusion of former Delta State Governor, Chief James Ibori in the National Convention Committee.

Fact is Ibori was convicted in UK, he has served his punishment, and imprisonment of anyone should be reformatory and not a stigma with which someone’s existence must be terminated.

    Now to the APC;

The first National Chairman of the APC, Chief Bisi Akande was jailed in 1984 by a Tribunal duly set up by Buhari’s military regime for using funds belonging to the old Oyo State to fund his political party.

Interestingly, Baba Bisi Akande was only released from jail and not pardoned by the Ibrahim Babangida government.

It is also a fact that it was late Chief Sunday Afolabi who prevailed on the Osun State PDP not to go to court to raise the issue of Akande’s conviction vis his qualification to contest election as a governor in 1999.

Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, the APC Leader in the House of Representatives was convicted for professional misconduct by the Supreme Court of Georgia, United States of America.

Fact is Hon Gbajabiamila was convicted in the United States for stealing his client’s $25,000 and he is leading the APC in the House of Reps. He was banned from practising law in the USA for 36 months.

The punishment for Femi Gbaja’s offence would have been debarment for life, however he played dead before a full panel of the Supreme Court of Georgia led by Chief Justice Leah Ward Sears, before the court could rule on the petition from his client, he filed a petition for Voluntary Discipline, filed under bar rule 4-227(b) in which he fully admitted to stealing $25,000 from his client.

In spite of this indictment, Gbajabiamila was even presented to be Speaker of the House of Reps and same APC people are condemning the inclusion of Ibori in the PDP National Convention Committee.

I have cited just too examples, and I still have more to cite if the APC loudmouth do not desist from throwing stones from the glass house where they live.

My name is Lere Olayinka, I am in my house, and their DSS can come and arrest me for once again exposing the hypocrisy of the APC.
