Okorocha rejects daughter’s board appointment by Buhari, says it is “unbridled mischief”

Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State has rejected the appointment of his second daughter, Uju Anwuka, by the Federal Government as a member of the Board of the Federal College of Education Technology, Omoku, Rivers state.

Okorocha said this in a statement issued in Owerri on Friday by his Chief Press Secretary, Sam Onwuemeodo.

The governor alleged that the appointment was not done in a good faith, describing it as an “unbridled mischief.”

Okorocha claimed that he heard of the appointment like every other Nigerian, alleging that nobody consulted him before announcing his daughter’s name as a board member of the federal institution.

He said that alongside his daughter and the entire family, he rejected the appointment, asserting that whoever was behind it had an ulterior motive and that it looked “suspicious.”

The statement reads in part, “To the governor, the appointment was obviously not done in good faith.

Whoever was the brain behind the appointment did so out of unbridled mischief.

“Otherwise, the person behind the appointment would have had the courtesy of either informing the father or the mother.

“The truth of the matter is that the governor’s daughter does not need the appointment. The governor has therefore asked whoever was behind the appointment to withdraw it, since the daughter would not have needed the appointment, even if he had not become governor.

“Indeed, the governor has the feeling that whoever was behind the appointment did it with something else at the back of his or her mind; otherwise, the person would have acted well his or her part by informing him or the mother, or even the daughter herself.

“The daughter and the entire family reject the appointment.”

TheNewsGuru.com reports that Okorocha daughter’s is married to the son of the current Minister of State for Education, Prof. Anthony Anwuka.

Obaseki receives list of nominees for appointment

The committee constituted to screen persons for political appointments in Edo on Friday presented nominations for Special Advisers (SA) and Senior Special Assistants (SSA) to Governor Mr Godwin Obaseki.

Presenting the report at Government House, Benin, Chairman of the Committee, Professor Dennis Agbonlahor, described the process as innovative and democratically-driven.

He recalled that the committee had three weeks ago submitted report on the recommendations for the appointment of commissioners to the governor.

Agbonlahor said, “we received 11 applications for the position of Special Advisers; we recommended six nominees, two each from the three senatorial districts in the state.

Out of the six persons, two are females, representing 33 per cent of the nominees.

We used the same criteria to screen the SSAs. We received 150 applications and after interview, with the leaders of the various local government areas and the applicants, when necessary, we nominated 54 persons.

Three persons from each of the 18 LGAs in the state, including seven females, were selected, which is about 13 per cent of the nominees,” he said.

Receiving the report, the governor commended the committee for aligning with the principle and criteria set up for the screening.

He said that the process was necessary to allow people at the grassroots participate in the selection of political leaders.

According to Obaseki, we must involve people at the grassroots to participate in the process of nominating people they believe will represent their interest to work in government.

He explained that the committee was set up to listen and review the complaints of those who felt they were left out of the political process.

He assured that before the end of May all the political nominees would be appointed into offices.

  • Don’t condemn Buhari over delay in my appointment as CJN — Onnoghen

The acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen has called on Nigerians to desist from condemning President Muhammadu Buhari over the delay in his appointment as a substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN.

TheNewsGuru.com recalls that President Muhammadu Buhari had on November 10 appointed Justice Walter Onnoghen in acting capacity following the retirement of Justice Mahmud Mohammed after attaining the mandatory 70 years in public service.

Due to the delay in the confirmation of Walter as the CJN, there have been attacks from various quarters on the president questioning why he was yet to act as expected especially when the ACJN’s tenure would expire on February 10.

However, while commending Nigerians for showing interest in the appointment of the substantive CJN to oversee the affairs of the judiciary, Justice Onnoghen said the President “does not need any threat or ultimatum to perform his constitutional duties.”

He said in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Awassam Bassey, that the President should be given a free hand to perform his constitutional duties concerning the appointment of a substantive CJN.

The statement read in part, “The Honourable acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, His Lordship, the Hon. Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen, CFR, FNJI, wishes to appeal to Nigerians to allow Mr. President, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, a free hand to perform his constitutional duties concerning the appointment of a substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria.

Honourable Justice Onnoghen believes the President does not need any threat or ultimatum to perform his constitutional duties and therefore dissociates himself from those individuals and groups making such demands on the president.

However, the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria and the Nigerian judiciary sincerely appreciate the interest of Nigerians towards the appointment of a substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria to oversee the affairs of the judiciary as the third arm of government, but believes that issuing an ultimatum to Mr. President appears to be going too far and smacks of disrespect for the exalted office of the President.”

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the three months allowed by the constitution for Onnoghen to act as CJN expires on February 10.
