FG orders shoot on sight for anyone who attempts jailbreak

The federal government has ordered the personnel of the Nigeria Correctional Service to shoot on sight any internal and external aggressor on Custodial Centres.

Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola gave the order at an emergency meeting with NCOs Squadron Commanders, Field Commanders and Heads of Armed Squads.

This follows the recent wave of attacks on the Custodial Centres across the country.

He also cautioned the personnel against trafficking which he said is reported as one of the means through which criminals invade the facilities having known that they could smuggle contraband into the facilities, Vanguard reports.

While he declared the centres as “red zones” which must remain inviolable at all costs, Aregbesola directed the officers to deploy maximum force rather than minimum force against aggressors.

He said; “Our Custodial Centres must be red zones. It is a quarantine centre for those who by law should not live among free men. When a person is declared unfit to relate with other humans, it is the duty of the authorities to guarantee it.

“We are with you absolutely to make our Custodial Centres inviolable. Attack on centres is no longer a happenstance. There is a pattern now and we can no longer give any excuse to allow these attacks to succeed.

I was at the Owerri centre when we were told about the circumstances surrounding that attack and the question someone asked was, where are the casualties?

“If this meeting must make any meaning at all, you will be held absolutely responsible going forward for any attack on our custodial facilities. I asked representatives of the advanced nations about how it works and they told me a custodial centre is a fortress and a sacred facility that nobody should even have the temerity to attack, not to talk of succeeding at attacking.

“So the current security challenges are just being used as a cover. A pattern is fast emerging and we must take it as such.

“Well, we must commend you for your professionalism, diligence and sacrifice in the performance of your duties. We appreciate you but the line must be drawn where you say enough is enough, where nobody can cross, to dare or to attempt to break our will.

“I am aware of your yeoman’s job in foiling attacks, particularly jailbreaks. I must commend you for your brilliance in Ikoyi, Bauchi, Ubiaja and Kano recently.

“The custodial facilities are a symbol of the authority of the Nigerian State. They are sacred and inviolable institutions. You will notice that they are usually built around military fortresses, to show how important they are. This is to deter would-be attackers from inside or outside.

“More importantly, you are armed and positioned to directly guard them and defend their integrity. Your mission is to defend the facilities at all costs. Let me repeat, defend them at all costs.

“You are empowered by the highest authority in the land to use every means necessary to defend the custodial centres against internal and external aggression.

“The weapons you carry and the instrument you have are to be lawfully deployed for maximum effect, in protecting the facilities. Anyone or group of persons that decide(s) to attack them should not live to regret it.

“You must not fail because failure means you have contributed to the insecurity in the land by allowing criminals to invade society. This begins with vigilance. You must be on the watch for any instrument or material that could aid criminals in perpetuating jailbreaks. Again, earlier this month, vigilant officers stopped one of their colleagues from smuggling a mobile phone to an inmate in Bauchi. It will be difficult, if not impossible, for inmates to break from inside without receiving assistance from officers, no matter how little.

“Never again must a successful attack happen on any of our custodial facilities, not even in our farms. Whoever attempts it must simply regret it. By the time you make it almost a life and death matter when you attempt a custodial facility, that will be the end of such an attack.

According to Aregbesola, some of the inmates who escaped from the custodial centres have been rearrested for murder.

“Some of the escaped inmates from Edo have been rearrested for murder, another crime. There was a particular case that immediately he escaped from the centre in Edo, he went straight and killed all those he said facilitated his initial arrest. Luckily he has now been arrested and faces double jeopardy, one for escape from lawful custody and two, for murder,” Aregbesola added.

How Yinka Odumakin supported Tinubu to emerge Lagos Governor in 1999 – Aregbesola

Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola on Saturday took a trip down memory lane to recollect how late National Publicity Secretary of Yoruba socio-cultural organization; Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin started a robust relationship with him and former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu in 1998.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that Aregbesola, the immediate past governor of Osun State revealed this in a tribute to the fallen human activist who breathed his last last Friday.

According to Aregbesola, despite the fact that Odumakin later became a fierce critic of him (Aregbesola) and the national leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), that still doesn’t change the fact that “he (Odumakin) was a tenacious advocate of his convictions; never gave up on whatever he believed in, regardless of the opposition.”

Yinka Odumakin: The Exit Of A Convinced Humanist

    By Rauf Aregbesola

The circumstance of his demise were quite unusual. Though a picture he took with Papa Ayo Adebanjo, indicating he was not in the best shape of health had appeared on the internet not quite long ago; still, it caught us by surprise. The human mind has the incredible capacity to suppress morbid suggestions on loved ones, bordering on denial. But now, as the dust is settling and the tears are drying, we are beginning to reconcile to the fact that Yinka Odumakin is gone.

February 20, earlier this year, was the last time I had a telephone conversation with him. He was his natural self. He could be vivacious when excited and could also be dead sober, if the matter requires it. I never had any premonition it would be our last conversation.

Odumakin straddled the political spectrum, breaking into public consciousness as a students union activist at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, then practiced journalism at The Punch newspaper; was also part the struggles for military disengagement and deannulment of June 12, 1993 Presidential election won by Chief Moshood Abiola. In the post military era, Yinka retained his public presence with his participation in the politics of AD, AC, ACN, CPC and reportedly flirted with former President Goodluck Jonathan. He later consolidated his activism in Yoruba nationalism, being a highly visible spokesperson of Afenifere. He was a tenacious advocate of his convictions; never gave up on whatever he believed in, regardless of the opposition.

How did we meet? Yinka Odumakin and Bunmi Omoshehindemi walked into my office as the CGS of Bola Ahmed Tinubu Campaign Organisation office at Sunday Adigun St., Alausa Ikeja. It was in November of 1998.

Both came to declare support for the candidacy of Bola Tinubu unequivocally. This was in defiant opposition to those then opposed to any form of accommodation for democratic building process without a clear resolution of the June 12 imbroglio. This was a courageous step, then considering that their position would have been considered anathema by the movement. We had since then built a robust relationship, sometimes very smooth and at times frosty, but all the time remarkable till his translation on Friday, April 2, 2021.

I said we had a remarkable relationship because Yinka was consistent in standing up to fight for democracy, federalism, justice and rule of law. These to me are the factors for defining the dignity of man. Whoever has this commitment is an ally and a humanist.

Yinka has had to publicly criticise me a couple of times, especially when I was governor in Osun, our relationship notwithstanding. I took it in good faith, as it never affected our relationship. His criticisms were consistent with his convictions on what constitute public interest.

I am therefore proud to have known, interacted and worked with a humanist that doggedly fought for the dignity of people.

Yinka Odumakin, you will wake up to joyful activities on the other side. May the good Lord support your wife, family and friends. Ameen.

Why I didn’t receive salaries for eight years as Osun Governor – Aregbesola

The Minister of Interior and immediate past governor of Osun State, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola has denied reports that he secretly received his accumulated 96-month salary while leaving office as governor in 2019.

The minister was reacting to reports accusing him of receiving the accumulated salaries in secret.

A statement from minister’s media aide, Sola Fasure, described the report as a fiction written by elements bent on casting “aspersion on the integrity of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola “.

According to the statement, the author of the report “falsely claims that the Minister of Interior and immediate past governor of the State of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, towards the end of his tenure, secretly received the backlog of his full salary for the entire period he was governor, contrary to his asserting that he never did.

“The report is entirely a piece of fiction, a good exemplar of fake news and disreputable journalism.”

The media aide said: “Let me state categorically again that Ogbeni Aregbesola did not receive any salary in the entire duration of his eight-year stint as governor in Osun.

“His reason being that the state government provided accommodation, security, transportation, food and other conveniences for him and would not need to pay for these from his pocket.

“He also explained that all his children are grown up and have graduated and he would not need to pay school fees again. He therefore donated his salaries to the state government.

“The author of the report claims to have got the information from some anonymous government officials. He provides no evidence.

“The report fails the basic journalistic ethical requirement that only truth and verifiable fact should be reported as news. Reading through it, one is not in doubt that the evil intention behind the piece was to smear and cast aspersion on the integrity of Ogbeni Aregbesola.”

How ongoing membership registration, revalidation exercise is opening doors for killers, criminals to join APC – Aregbesola

Minister for Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, lamented the membership registration and revalidation exercise of All Progressives Congress (APC) has made murderers and rascals join the party.

Aregbesola, while addressing his supporters in Ilesha, Osun State after he revalidated his membership in APC at Ward 8 in Ifofin, in Ilesa East Local Government with his wife, said the influx of leaders, members of the opposition PDP and other political parties to the APC has allowed those with questionable and unedifying past to cross into the progressive, people-centred party.

The immediate past Osun Governor claimed the APC constitution has no power to reject such individuals since no court has pronounced them as murderers.

He refused to mention names but charged APC members they have a moral duty to ensure such elements do not occupy leadership positions and derail the party.

According to him: “We are doing this registration and revalidation exercise so that it will be easy for us to choose those that will lead and be the candidate of our party.

“No room for a lopsided candidate again in APC. We have registered killer and murderer in our party.

“Our party’s law cannot reject a killer when the court has not pronounced such a person as a killer. But we know killer, thief and rascal in our midst.

“When the time comes we will boycott such person. We can’t allow anybody to take advantage of Bola Ige’s death as a means to take a leadership position. Anyone that attempted it shall never be great. Bola Ige is our father!

“Anybody who disrespects and despise Bola Ige is my enemy. Anytime that we want to choose a candidate here, we will consider name, character, act and those who you moved with before we choose our leader.

“Chief Bola Ige was our leader and stood all his life for a compassionate government, commitment to the good of the majority and ideas that would bring the good life, happiness, progress and security to the people.”

Buhari is aware of hardship in Nigeria – Aregbesola

Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, has divulged that President Muhammadu Buhari is aware of the hardship Nigerians are facing.

He said that COVID-19 pandemic and End SARS protest have caused suffering to the people, noting that Buhari is aware and on top of the situation.

“The President is aware of the hardship facing the citizens of the country. This was caused by the pandemic and the End SARS protest which erupted in many states of the federation. The president is doing all his best and I can assure you that very soon, all will be well and we will be happy again.”

Meanwhile, Aregbesola also urged Nigerians to go about the festive period with caution, saying that coronavirus pandemic is still very much on.

The minister made these known while speaking at the commissioning of a central mosque built by Ta’Awunu Islamic group in Iwo, Osun State, on Saturday.

Aregbesola cautioned that the country can’t afford to return to when the dreaded Virus was at its peak in the country, urging Nigerians not lower their guards at this point that cases are being recorded ona daily basis.

“My reasons for coming to the state is in two folds: End SARS and to remind us that Coronavirus is still very much with us. We can’t afford to return to when the virus was at its peak in the country. That is why we must observe social distance and we use our face masks always. Cases are still being recorded everyday.

“During this festive period, we must be cautious. We should obey the holy prophet’s teachings that say, ‘when there is an outbreak of epidemic somewhere, we should not leave there and those outside should not join until the epidemic is over. We must take responsibilities of our lives,” he said

Nigeria needs private security firms to curtail insecurity —Aregbesola

The Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, has said Nigeria needs private security firms to address insecurity in the country.

He made this known in Calabar during a retreat organised by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, and the Association of Licenced Private Security Practitioners of Nigeria.

The retreat held on Thursday had the theme, ‘New Dynamics for Security Practice in Nigeria’.

The Minister whose speech was read by his Senior Special Adviser on Strategy, Ademola Adeyinka, called on private security firms in the country to be prepared to fill the gaps.

He said, “There is no doubt that we need private security firms. In a situation where there is a shortage of personnel, there is bound to be challenges, so this is where private security firms fill the gap and they should be prepared to play certain roles.”

He said the roles they should play should include providing security for their clients at the lower level, prepare their personnel to assist the security agencies with gathering and transmission of critical information as well as standardised training and renumeration.

Aregbesola noted that the Ministry of Interior will like to collaborate with them on establishing a training and certification institution for all categories of private security firms.

He said the retreat is timeous given its objective of sharpening and shaping the role of private security operators in the general security architecture of Nigeria.

In his speech at the event, the National President of ALPSPN, Wilson Esangbedo, identified some challenges faced by private security firms in the country.

“Our operators are operating under very harsh and difficult business environment. The Federal Ministry of Labour Employment and Productivity is harassing our operators to obtain recruiters’ licences to deploy guards.

“We also have the issue of very high tax assessment besides sundry fees our operators are forced to pay in various states of operation,” Esangbedo noted.

Buhari, Sanwo-Olu, Ambode mourn former Oyo State Gov, Abiola Ajimobi

President Muhammadu Buhari has condoled with government and people of Oyo State over the passing of a former governor, Isiaka Abiola Ajimobi, whose contributions to the development of the state, and nation, will always be remembered.

The President commiserated with the family of the former governor, who served the country as a Senator, 2003, before winning the governorship election in 2011, remaining steadfast and consistent in his progressive views, and working assiduously for the creation of the All Progressives Congress.

As the party chieftain bows out, President Buhari believes he left the world at a crucial moment when the party and the country needed his counsels to heal and grow, noting that his absence will be sorely felt by all associates, particularly in the APC.

The President prays that the Almighty God will comfort the family of the former governor, and grant him a peaceful rest.

Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his immediate predecessor in office, Akinwunmi Ambode have mourned the death of former governor of Oyo State, Abiola Ajimobi.

Ajimobi died on Thursday at First Cardialogy Hospital, Ikoyi, Lagos where he had been receiving treatment after contracting COVID-19.

Sanwo-Olu, in a statement by his chief pres secretary, Gboyega Akosile, described the exit of Ajimobi as a great loss to his family, Oyo State and the country.

According to the governor, Ajimobi’s demise, after all efforts by medical professionals to stabilise him, has opened a deep sore in the hearts of millions of Nigerians, who looked up to him as a rallying point and a political stabiliser.

“Senator Ajimobi was more than a politician, he was a man of many parts, whose managerial skills and experience are required at this critical period in our national life.
Sanwo-Olu urged the decreased’s family to take heart, saying that death is inevitable.

Ambode on his part, described Ajimobi as a personal friend, adding also that the deceased was very passionate about his state, the Yoruba agenda and the Nigerian project.

“This is a big loss. As much as he was a politician, he was also a devoted family man. I pray that Almighty God will grant him eternal rest and his entire family the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss,” he said.

  • Tinubu speaks on alleged feud with Aregbesola

Tinubu speaks on alleged feud with Aregbesola

National leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has dismissed the viral rumour that a cold war is raging between him and his protege, Rauf Aregbesola, the Minister of Interior.

The rumour started after the Governor’s Advisory Council in the state announced the ban of political groups within APC in the state.

Aregbesola’s Mandate Group was one of the groups affected.

And rumour mongers then speculated that it was indicative of a cold war between Aregbesola and Tinubu.

But Tinubu has emphatically denied the speculation and accused the author of groundless speculation.

“There is no war, cold or hot, between them. There has never been and there will never be. Asiwaju believes in him and he believes in the APC leader”, said a statement on Tinubu’s Twitter handle.

    Please Read the full statement:

Today, the Governor’s Advisory Council, the highest decision-making body within the All Progressives Congress in Lagos State, passed a resolution calling for the disbandment of all factional groups within the party.

This was to promote discipline, harmony and cohesion and engender party supremacy. The APC is one united political family in Lagos.

Our attention has, however, been drawn to a report in an online newspaper alleging that the GAC’s appropriate and candid resolution had worsened a phantom cold war between Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and the Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola.

This is a figment of the imagination of the news organization that authored the report. Asiwaju Tinubu remains Ogbeni Aregbesola’s leader. The former governor of Osun State has been unswervingly & wholly committed to the progressive ideology of the Tinubu political family.

There is no war, cold or hot, between them. There has never been and there will never be. Asiwaju believes in him and he believes in the APC leader.

Our political family remains strong. And we are staying focused in our commitment to building and maintaining a cohesive political party.

The GAC is a very strong body within the APC leadership structure in Lagos. Its resolution is not targeted at any particular individual or collection of individuals.

The resolution was to restate the often-stated position that the only group known to us is APC and not any of the factional groups. It was to renew the commitment to APC and its unity.

Ogbeni Aregbesola is a strong member of the political family. The GAC position does not imply any division within the group. The resolution is well-meaning and should not be misinterpreted.

To do so impulsively as the authors of the report has done is to take the frontier of reporting away from facts to the realm of groundless speculations.

2023 Presidential Ambition: Aregbesola speaks as reports of fracas with Tinubu thickens

The Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola has reacted to claims of nursing presidential ambition in 2023 and also dismissed claims that he is at war with his leader and mentor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Aregbesola also denied any plans of nursing any presidential ambition.

He spoke in Abuja this afternoon against the background of reports published in some media outlets that his loyalty to Asiwaju is wavering.

The minister explained that ‘he knew where the story was coming from and the identity of those sponsoring it. ‘Rift with Asiwaju Tinubu? Nothing can be more impossible! Nothing can be farther from the truth. I remain committed to my mentor,’ Aregbesola said.

He added that “the group our detractors’ claim has been banned is the most committed to the realization of Asiwaju’s ambition.”

The minister noted “They even said I have presidential ambition. False!”

Aregbesola reiterated that the APC is one, adding that the party is like an oak tree that keeps growing.

He said his focus and goal is to execute his ministerial duties as directed by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has reportedly taken some steps against the political moves by Rauf Aregbesola, Nigeria’s interior minister and former governor of Osun State.

Naija News understands Tinubu on Tuesday afternoon, dissolved all political groups in the state not authorized by him.

The decision was announced at the meeting of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) in Lagos.

This decision is coming as a result of the cold war between Tinubu and Rauf Aregbesola, TheCable reports.

Aregbesola was accused of launching and operating political groups in the state without the knowledge and approval of Tinubu.

These political activities are understood to have pitched Aregbesola against Tinubu as both politicians are said to have an eye on the 2023 presidential contest.

  • COVID-19: Lai Mohammed, Ehanire, Aregbesola, others test negative

COVID-19: Lai Mohammed, Ehanire, Aregbesola, others test negative

There was a sigh of relief on Thursday in Abuja as most members of President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet tested negative to COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic.

The positive status of the Chief of Staff, Mallam Abba Kyari, who is the coordinator of government activities created fright in government circles of a possible high-rate of infection of the cabinet members and governors.

But it was a thing of joy in the early hours when the tests conducted on most of the ministers were negative.

Although some results were still being awaited as of press time on Thursday, some of those whose results were released are members of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, including the Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, who had gone into self-isolation ahead of the results.

There were signs that some members of the PTF might occasionally come out of isolation to attend to urgent issues on COVID-19.

Those given clean bill of health are: Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Boss Mustapha; Dr. Ehanire; Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola; Aviation Minister Hadi Sirika; Information and Culture Minister Lai Mohammed and Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Services Minister Sadiya Umar-Farouk.

Others are Finance Minister Mrs. Zainab Ahmed; her Minister of State Clem Agba; Education Minister Adamu Adamu; Environment Minister Mohammed Mahmoud; Others are the Minister of FCT, Mohammed Bello; the Minster of State for Mines and Steel, Mr. Uche Ogah; and the Minister of State, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Dr. Ramatu Aliyu.

Other members of the SGF-led presidential taskforce on COVID whose tests turned out negative are the Director-General, Department of State Services (DSS), Mr. Yusuf Bichi; the Director-General, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control; Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu; and the World Health Organisation Country Representative, Wondimagegnehu Alemu.

A top source said: “All members of the PTF tested negative to COVID-19. At least, we now know the status of those managing this crisis for us.”

A minister, who spoke in confidence, said: “It was harrowing in the last 48 hours awaiting the results. I, members of my family and my aides had been in suspense.

“We were expected to receive the results on Wednesday but we were not notified until the early hours of Thursday.

“It was traumatic but it was worth it at the end of the day. The fear is not about whether positive or negative but the stigmatisation.

“The tension was more profound when we were given our results individually. No minister could ask his or her colleague the outcome of the test.”

The Minister of State, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Dr. Ramatu Aliyu, said via a tweet: “I’m glad to inform all my family and friends, including the good people of the FCT at large that I have tested *negative* to COVID-19. I thank Almighty Allah for good health and his infinite grace in these trying times.

“I want to implore you all to take all possible precautions not just for yourself but also for your loved ones. Please avoid getting panicked. As a nation, we shall come out of this stronger and better”.

Responding to a question at a news briefing yesterday, the Minister of Information and Culture, said, “Yes, I did the test and early this morning (Thursday), I got the result and it came out negative.

“Every member of the Presidential Task Force(PTF) submitted himself or herself to the test. I am not at liberty to tell you the results of anyone

“We were tested at home. You can be tested within three to five minutes.”

But Mohammed was put to task on why the ministers, who were negative, had not gone into isolation.

He said:”Given the nature of the assignment before the PTF, we cannot abdicate our responsibility.

“We have taken measures on how to go about our duty such as teleconferencing. We came out of self-isolation because we have a huge task at hand.

“We will, as when necessary, come out of isolation, not because we have tested negative, but because we cannot abdicate our responsibility and just disappear.

“We are going to adhere strictly to the regulations on hygiene, social distancing, and other preventive measures.”
