BREAKING: Football legend, Diego Maradona is dead

Football legend Diego Maradona has sadly passed away at the age of 60 on Wednesday.

The former Argentina attacking midfielder and manager had successful surgery on a brain blood clot earlier in November.

It was then announced he was to be treated for alcohol dependency.

One of the greatest players of all time, Maradona was captain when Argentina won the 1986 World Cup, producing a series of sublime individual performances.

He played for Barcelona and Napoli during his club career, winning two Serie A titles with the Italian side.

Argentina legend Diego Maradona will be discharged from hospital on Wednesday and taken to a recovery clinic to be treated for alcohol dependency.

Maradona, who led his country to World Cup triumph in 1986, had a successful operation for possible bleeding on his brain earlier in November.

“The good thing is that Diego is together, Diego is solid,” his lawyer, Matias Morla, said.

Maradona was admitted to the Ipensa clinic in Buenos Aires last week with anaemia and dehydration, BBC reports.

Only a few close friends will be allowed to visit the 60-year-old at the rehabilitation clinic.

“Diego has gone through maybe the most difficult moment of his life and I think it was a miracle that they found this bleeding in his brain that could have cost him his life,” his lawyer added.

Argentine football legend, Diego Maradona, is to remain for at least one more day in hospital as he suffers from anemia and mild dehydration, his doctor said on Tuesday.

On Monday, the 1986 World Cup winner was admitted to the Ipensa hospital in La Plata, three days after his 60th birthday.

“It was emotional, a slightly difficult week for him,’’ Luque said.

“He was under big pressure. That hurt him mentally.’’

Maradona was assisted by two helpers when he appeared at Friday’s match of Gimnasia y Esgrima, the team he coaches, to receive birthday wishes and presents.

Messi is always complaining – Aguero

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero has joked that he and Barcelona ace Lionel Messi are “like an old married couple”, when they hook up on Argentina duty.

Messi made his debut for his country in 2005, a year before Aguero joined the Argentina senior set-up.

The duo have played together at three World Cups, four Copa Americas and won gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Although both players always share a room, Aguero has revealed that he always leaves Messi complaining.

“He always complains, we are like an old married couple.

“I always fall asleep with the TV on and when I wake up the next morning he is always complaining to me.

“He arrives at the hotel and instantly takes a shower while I’m just sitting talking on my mobile phone. Then he will remind me that we need to go down to dinner and we do not have time,” Aguero said on the Santo Sabado programme.

Messi ban now over – AFA president

Lionel Messi can play in Argentina’s opening 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier next month, Claudio Tapia, president of the Argentine Football Association (AFA), said on Thursday.

Tapia said this was because the statute of limitations (barring him from playing) has run out on the ban he was given during last year’s Copa America

Messi was banned for one game after being sent off in the Copa America third-place playoff against Chile and for levelling accusations of “corruption” at South American football chiefs.

Messi had been expected to serve the ban by missing Argentina’s qualifier against Ecuador, which is scheduled to take place in Buenos Aires on Oct. 8.

However, Tapia said he had consulted with South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) President Alejandro Dominguez.

“…. he confirmed the statute of limitations had expired and that he (Messi) is able to play,” Tapia was quoted as saying by AFA on twitter.

The FC Barcelona forward was shown the red card after clashing with Gary Medel.

Afterwards, he alleged the tournament had been fixed in favour of hosts Brazil, who beat Argentina in a controversial semi-final on their way to claiming the title.

Argentina, who last won the World Cup in 1986, kick off their qualifying campaign with a double-header at home to Ecuador and away to Bolivia.

Maradona admits Messi is best player today

Diego Maradona admits Lionel Messi is “the best football player today” and considers his fellow Argentine to be an “enormous” talent but is hoping to see the Barcelona superstar downed by Napoli.

The first leg of an eagerly-anticipated Champions League last-16 encounter is due to be staged at Stadio San Paolo on Tuesday.

That contest is set to see six-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi step into the arena iconic countryman Maradona once called home.

Much is being made of the Barcelona captain’s presence in Naples, with the 32-year-old following in some illustrious footsteps.

Comparisons continue to be made between his remarkable career and that of World Cup winner Maradona, with there little to separate two all-time greats.

Two men at the centre of a fierce debate have attempted to steer clear of being drawn into one regarding who can be considered the best.

Both have the utmost respect for one another, with Maradona considering Messi to be “a very good boy”.

He also told Il Mattino of the mercurial Barca star that he once managed while working as head coach of the Argentina national side: “He must continue his career and his life knowing that he is the best football player today.

“I enjoyed watching Leo with Argentina in every game.”

How i helped Messi to score free-kicks – Maradona

Argentina legend, Diego Maradona has claimed that he helped to teach Barcelona captain, Lionel Messi how to take free-kicks during his regime as La Albiceleste head coach.

The 58-year-old, who coached Messi while he was manager of the Argentina national team between 2008 and 2010, claims the Barca number 10 sought his counsel over his free-kick technique.

Messi scored eight direct free-kicks last season for Barcelona but Maradona is now saying that his advice saw the 32-year-old improve greatly on his free kicks.

Maradona, who was recently appointed coach of Gimnasia, Esgrima La Plata in Argentina Superliga, was quoted by the Daily Mail as saying on Monday: “Messi had an issue with free-kicks. When we finished every training session, we kept Leo behind so he could practice, and he started to hit the post.

“I didn’t teach him how to take a free-kick, then he asked me how I was able to score.

“I said, ‘you just have to hit it in the middle. They aren’t going to give me an Oscar to teach you this’.

“And he replied, ‘but I hit it in the middle and the ball goes this way or that way’ and I told him,

“don’t worry, you’re going to make it’. Now he just can’t miss.”

A subdural haematoma is a condition where a blood vessel located between the skull and brain – in the subdural space – breaks, causing blood to pool there. It is usually the result of a traumatic head injury.
Because the blood is trapped by the skull it exerts pressure on the brain, causing brain damage.
Symptoms include dizziness, confusion, vomiting and loss of consciousness.
