Qatar 2022: Messi’s moment of magic inspires Argentina against Mexico

It was some nervy moment for Argentina but a show of brilliance from seven times Ballon d’or winner Lionel Messi made all the difference in the thrilling encounter against Mexico.

Argentina coming off the heels of a 2-1 loss to Saudi Arabia needed to win to revive their hopes of making it to the round of 16.

All through the entire duration of the match, Mexico made brilliant moves  at nullifying every Argentina threat but they soon succumbed to pressure.

in what seem like a deadlock encounter, Messi struck a wonderful finish from outside the box in the 62nd minute for the South American’s opener.

In the 87 minute, Argentine youngster, Enzo Fernandez after an exchange of pass with Messi curls in a brilliant second goal and his first World Cup goal in his debut tournament to ensure all three points for Argentina and a 2-0 win for the South Americans.

Andres Guardado the Mexican captain hobbled off  the pitch due to injury after playing out his heart out for the North Americans.

He was replaced by PSV Eindhoven midfielder Erick Gutierrez, Soon after the flood gate of goals opened against his team.

Although nothing in that first half that could be in any way described as a clear-cut chance for either side, the Argentines needed two second half goals to make it count.

With this result Argentina’s hopes of winning the World Cup trophy is alive, they will be needing an outright win in their last group C game  to secure outright qualification to the round of 16.

Argentina now sits second on the group standing with a point adrift of Poland who occupies the number 1 position on the table.

Argentina plays Poland next week Wednesday  in the last group C game.

Qatar 2022: We’re dead right now – Messi reacts after Saudi defeat

Argentina captain Lionel Messi has reacted 2-1 humiliation by Saudi Arabia in the World Cup fixture in Qatar.

The first half was marked by a series of Argentina goals ruled out for offside. The calls were the correct ones by the refereeing and VAR teams, but they appeared to affect Argentina nonetheless.

“We had those disallowed goals, at that time we thought we would have a lot of chances and we made the mistake of speeding up and going route one, instead of moving the ball from side to side,” said PSG attacker Messi.

“We knew that they would play a high line and we got caught up in that a bit.

“Then we went 2-1 down and we became disorganised, playing desperately.”

An honest assessment, but one that should be worrying for Argentina and showed their inability to navigate difficult situations in what should have been, overall, a relatively simple game for them. There will be bigger tests to come and they will have to improve quickly if they are to live up to their tag as contenders.

Barcelona legend Messi also conceded that scoring so early may have not been the best thing for them. He also confessed that the squad took the result hard, but insists they remain united and ready to bounce back.

“The goal so early wasn’t good for us, it confused us. We knew that in the first game it could happen that we didn’t play as well as we can and we have been,” commented Messi.

“When the scoreline goes against you, it becomes even more difficult. The group is dead right now, because it’s a tough blow to take, because we were confident of getting off to a good start, of winning, and that calms you.

“But this group stands out for its unity, its strength and now is the time to be more united than ever and know we can go back to the start, to our way of playing to try to win.”

Despite the setback, Messi wanted to end on a positive, looking ahead to the coming games. Next up for the Albiceleste is Mexico on Saturday.

“Calmness [is my message for the fans]. We know it’s a tough blow, one that hurts,” said Messi.

“But we have to keep believing and we need the people to keep believing that this group won’t let them down.

“We’re going to go and try to win against Mexico.”

The disallowed goals undoubtedly affected Argentina, but Messi doesn’t want to make excuses. VAR got the calls right, even though many pointed to how tight they were.

“I saw some photos, they were very tight,” said Messi.

“I couldn’t tell from the images, but if they ruled them out then it’s because they were no doubt offside.

    “There’s no excuse.”

Qatar 2022: Saudi Arabia stun Argentina in World Cup shocker

A bold and brilliant Saudi Arabia pulled off one of the World Cup’s biggest shocks as they came from behind to stun two-time winners Argentina in a fantastic Group C opener in Lusail.

Ranked 51st in the world, Saudi Arabia could have been done and dusted in the first half as Lionel Messi opened the scoring from the penalty spot before Argentina had three goals ruled out for offside.

But Saudi Arabia flipped the game on its head in a stunning 10-minute period after half-time, Saleh Al-Shehri levelling with a low effort and Salem Al Dawsari firing them ahead to spark pandemonium in the stands.

Having shown their ruthlessness at one end, the Green Falcons demonstrated a ruggedness at the other, holding a stellar Argentina front line at bay to secure only their fourth World Cup win in history and throw the group wide open.

Lionel Scaloni’s Argentina came into the tournament among the favourites, on the back of a 36-game unbeaten run that included winning the 2021 Copa America.

They now have it all to do to keep alive their hopes of a first global triumph since 1986 and give Messi a fitting ending to what is very likely his World Cup swansong.

They face Mexico on Saturday, while Saudi Arabia take on Poland.

World Cup-bound referee issues 10 red cards in fiery football match final

Qatar World Cup-bound referee, Facundo Tello dished out 10 red cards in Argentina’s Champions Trophy final match on Sunday.

  • How Hackers stole $11m from Nigeria, others

How Hackers stole $11m from Nigeria, others

A gang of hackers, OPERA1ER, has stolen at least $11m from companies in Nigeria, Benin, Cameroon, 11 other African countries, and Argentina.

This is according to a new report from Group-IB, a cybersecurity firm, entitled, “OPERA1ER: Playing God without permission,” in collaboration with the researchers from Orange CERT Coordination Center.

The firm disclosed that digital forensic artifacts analyzed by it and Orange followed more than 30 successful intrusions of the gang between 2018 and 2022.

The company’s data revealed that companies in Ivory Coast were the most targeted.

It said this helped it to trace affected organizations in Ivory Coast, Mali, Burkina Faso, Benin, Cameroon, Bangladesh, Gabon, Niger, Nigeria, Paraguay, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Togo, and Argentina.

It added that while it estimated that the gang stole $11m, it could have actually stolen as high as $30m.

It stated, “The report takes a deep dive into financially motivated attacks of the prolific French-speaking threat actor, codenamed OPERA1ER.

“Despite relying solely on known ‘off-the-shelf’ tools, the gang managed to carry out more than 30 successful attacks against banks, financial services, and telecommunication companies mainly located in Africa between 2018 and 2022. OPERA1ER is confirmed to have stolen at least $11m, according to Group-IB’s estimates.

“One of OPERA1ER’s attacks involved a vast network of 400 mule accounts for fraudulent money withdrawals. Researchers from the Group-IB European Threat Intelligence Unit identified and reached out to 16 affected organizations so they could mitigate the threat and prevent further attacks by OPERA1ER.”

According to the firm, the report was completed in 2021 when the threat actor was active. Head of cyber threat research at Group-IB Europe, Rustam Mirkasymov, said, “Detailed analysis of the gang’s recent attacks revealed an interesting pattern in their modus operandi: OPERA1ER conducts attacks mainly during the weekends or public holidays.

“It correlates with the fact that they spend from 3 to 12 months from the initial access to money theft. It was established that the French-speaking hacker group could operate from Africa. The exact number of the gang members is unknown.”
