Retired Argentine Bishop to spend over 4yrs in jail for sexual abuse

A retired Argentine bishop- seen as close to the Pope, Bishop Gustavo Oscar Zanchetta, 57, was on Friday sentenced to four and a half years in prison for sexual abuse.

A court in the northwestern town of Oran, where Zanchetta was bishop from 2013 to 2017, ordered his immediate detention.

Zanchetta was convicted of “simple, continued and aggravated sexual abuse,” with his offense aggravated by his role as a religious minster.

The trial in the town some 1,700 kilometers north of Buenos Aires began two weeks ago.

Zanchetta, who also worked as an advisor for the management of Vatican property, had denied the charges.

He was appointed to the Oran diocese by Pope Francis.

Once he has served his sentence, Zanchetta must sign a sex offenders register.

The charges were brought in 2018 by at least two seminary students.

The court heard evidence from two complainants, one of whom claimed the bishop had made approaches towards him and asked for “massages.”

The Vatican has said that at the time of Zanchetta’s resignation in 2017, there were no sex abuse claims against him.

PSG star Lionel Messi returns to Barcelona

Paris Saint-Germain star Lionel Messi was back in Barcelona on Sunday.

Messi played for Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday as they came from behind to beat Saint Etienne 3-1, helping his teammates win three points with two assists.

However, after the game he jumped on a plane to Barcelona to spend some time back in the Catalan city, where he feels happy, as revealed by La Sexta, who caught him arriving at El Prat airport.

Messi had a big smile on his face as he sported his PSG tracksuit. He has come to Barcelona to spend time with his partner Antonella, who is in the city to celebrate her birthday.

I just feel like my heart doesn’t work properly – Aguero

Former Argentina international, Sergio Aguero fears he won’t be able to run at a decent pace again after his cardiac arrest.

The Manchester City legend was forced into retirement after his cardiac arrest on his Barcelona debut.

Aguero was subsequently diagnosed with a cardiac arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat).

Speaking about his health on a Twitch stream, the 33-year-old said: “If I try to play football now, I run out of breath.

“Sometimes I wonder if I will ever be able to sprint again. I just feel like my heart doesn’t work properly.”

Messi missing in Argentina squad for upcoming World Cup qualifiers

Lionel Messi has not been included in Lionel Scaloni’s latest Argentina squad as he continues to recover from coronavirus.

The Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) forward has not played a match in almost a month, with the 1-1 Ligue 1 draw at Lorient on Dec. 22 being his most recent outing.

He contracted COVID-19 while back home in Argentina during the mid-season break, forcing him to return to France later than initially planned.

Messi seemed all set to return to action against Lyon on Jan. 9, but PSG said he needed to continue his recovery and then he also missed the 2-0 win over Brest on Saturday.

While he said last week that “I have almost recovered”, Messi did reveal on social media that getting over the illness took “longer than I thought”.

Given his situation, Argentina have seemingly deemed it pointless risking Messi or further disrupting his recovery given they have already secured qualification for this year’s World Cup.

Argentina travel to Chile on Thursday before hosting Colombia five days later, with both opponents still desperately fighting for the right to play at Qatar 2022.

La Albiceleste’s other remaining qualifiers are against Venezuela and surprise-package Ecuador in March.

Late Diego Maradona’s brother, Hugo dies at age 52

The younger brother of late Diego Maradona, Hugo Maradona, who also played football, has died, his lawyer confirmed on Tuesday.

Lawyer Angelo Pisani said that Hugo Maradona died of a heart attack at the age of 52.

He died in his home in Monte di Procida near the city of Naples where Diego Maradona played in the 1980s at Napoli.

Napoli said in a statement the thoughts of everyone at the club “are with the Maradona family after the sad passing of Hugo.”

The younger Maradona also played at Napoli briefly before being loaned off to Ascoli.

He then played for Rayo Vallecano and Rapid Vienna before spending six years in Japan at several clubs.

Diego Maradona died 13 months ago, also of a heart attack in the wake of brain surgery, at age 60.

He is an icon at Napoli whose stadium has been named after him.

  • Lionel Messi breaks Pele goal-scoring record

Lionel Messi breaks Pele goal-scoring record

Lionel Messi has overtaken Pele as the leading South American men’s goalscorer in international matches with a hat-trick in Argentina’s World Cup qualifier win against Bolivia.

Scoring all the goals in the 3-0 win in Buenos Aires brought Messi’s total for Argentina to 79 in 153 games.

Brazil legend Pele finished his career on 77 international goals in 92 games.

Messi’s 14th-minute goal from outside the box put him level with Pele and he broke the record in the second half.

The 34-year-old dribbled past a defender for his second goal before completing a hat-trick from a rebound two minutes before full-time.

After the match, Argentina captain Messi and his team-mates celebrated with the Copa America trophy in front of 20,000 fans at the Monumental Stadium.

He led the side to that title, his first major trophy in international football, in July, beating Brazil in the final.

“I dreamed about this day a lot and thanks to God it arrived,” Messi wrote on Instagram alongside a picture of the team with the trophy after the match.

“I don’t have words to thank you for all the love I’ve received. What a beautiful night, I enjoyed it so much – unforgettable.”

  • Brazil, Argentina face FIFA disciplinary probe over suspended match

Brazil, Argentina face FIFA disciplinary probe over suspended match

World football governing body FIFA has opened disciplinary proceedings involving both the Brazilian and Argentinian football associations following the suspension of Sunday’s 2022 World Cup qualifier in Sao Paulo.

The match was called off amid extraordinary scenes as officials, believed to be from Brazil’s health authority, stormed on to the pitch in Sao Paulo shortly after kick-off.

Their action was over an alleged coronavirus breach by the visiting team’s England-based players.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino described the situation as “crazy” on Monday, and the world governing body’s disciplinary committee will now investigate the circumstances which led to the suspension.

“Following the analysis of the official match reports related to the World Cup qualifier between Brazil and Argentina, FIFA can confirm that disciplinary proceedings have been opened involving both member associations,” a statement from FIFA read.

“The two teams were asked to provide further information on the facts which led to the suspension of the match, which will be gathered and then thoroughly reviewed by FIFA’s disciplinary committee. Updates will follow in due course.”

According to ANVISA, the Brazilian Health Surveillance Agency, Argentina’s four English Premier League (EPL) players are alleged to have declared false information on official forms to the country’s authorities.

The players are: Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso of Tottenham and Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez and Emiliano Buendia.

In doing so, they are deemed to have broken quarantine rules.

The Spurs duo can expect to be fined when they return to club duty, it was gathered.

Top-flight and EFL clubs had announced they would not permit players to travel to countries on the UK Government’s COVID-19 “red list”.

This had prompted Infantino to write to Prime Minster Boris Johnson to request exemptions, which were not forthcoming.

It had previously been agreed with Aston Villa that Martinez and Buendia would not be involved for Argentina’s next match against Bolivia.

This was to minimise their period of unavailability after arriving back in the UK and needing to quarantine.

Argentina later confirmed Martinez and Buendia had been authorised to now return to their club.

While they will not feature against Chelsea in the EPL on Saturday, they should be clear to play again for the visit of Everton on Sept. 18.

However, it is understood Tottenham are currently unsure when Romero and Lo Celso are due back.

It was understood that they were not given permission to join up with Argentina, and they will be hit with fines when they eventually return to club duties.

Romero, a summer signing from Atalanta, and Lo Celso started Sunday night’s match, along with Aston Villa goalkeeper Martinez, but Buendia was not in the matchday squad of 23 players.

ANVISA said it had been confirmed, following passport checks, that the four players “failed to comply with the rule for the entry of travellers on Brazilian soil”.

This was after declaring they had not passed through the UK in the last 14 days, which would have necessitated quarantining on arrival.

The situation was considered “a serious health risk”.

The local health authorities were advised “to determine the immediate quarantine of players, who are prevented from participating in any activity and must be prevented from remaining in Brazilian territory”.

The Argentina team responded to the entrance of the officials and the police by walking off the pitch and down the tunnel.

  • Messi stunned as Barca chose not to renew contract

Messi stunned as Barca chose not to renew contract

Lionel Messi’s camp are insisting Barcelona chose not to extend his contract.

Sport says Messi did not expect negotiations to sign a new contract with Barcelona to have an unhappy ending.

The forward is devastated at Barça’s announcement on Thursday that he will leave the club after 21 years at Camp Nou.

Barça said they had an agreement with Messi over a new deal but that La Liga’s financial rules made it impossible to register him for the new season.

On Thursday he received the confirmation that it would not be possible and that was reflected in his mood.

Sources insist the Argentina international was deeply distressed to find out Barça would be making the announcement.

D’Tigers overcome world number four Argentina in pre-olympic friendly

Nigeria men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, recorded another impressive victory in their preparatory games ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, after outclassing world number four Argentina on Monday.

Mike Brown’s side overpower the Argentines with a massive 23 points win, outscoring them 94 – 71.

At the weekend, D’Tigers stunned number one ranked team USA 90-87.

Argentina took the first quarter 19-17 but at half-time D’Tigers led 43-33.

And in the third quarter D’Tigers were ahead by 74 points to Argentina’s 55.
Argentina won gold and bronze at the Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 Olympics respectively.

Also, they won the FIBA World Cup in 1950 and finished second at the 2002 and 2019 editions.

  • Argentina beat Brazil for Copa America, Messi wins first title

Argentina beat Brazil for Copa America, Messi wins first title

Argentina ended their 28-year title drought on Saturday when an Angel Di Maria goal gave them a 1-0 win over Brazil for a record-equalling 15th Copa America.

The victory was a particular triumph for Barcelona striker Lionel Messi, who picked up his first ever title in a blue and white shirt after more than a decade of club and individual honours.

Messi finished the tournament’s joint top goalscorer with four goals and was elected joint best player along with Neymar.

But he was quiet throughout and uncharacteristically missed a golden opportunity to wrap the game up with two minutes remaining.

When the final whistle went, Argentina TV declared “Argentina Champions, Lionel Messi Champion!”

The victory was Argentina’s 15th Copa America triumph and means they draw level with Uruguay as the all-time leading winners.

Their win extended their sequence of undefeated matches to 20 under Lionel Scaloni and handed Brazil their first competitive defeat since they lost to Belgium in the quarter-finals of the 2018 World Cup.

Di Maria started for just the second time in the Copa and he justified his selection by scoring the opener midway through the first half.

Renan Lodi failed to cut out a long ball forward from Rodrigo De Paul and Di Maria lobbed the stranded Ederson with aplomb.

Brazil piled on the pressure in an exciting second half but even with five strikers on the field they could not get an equaliser against an Argentine defence protected by the outstanding Rodrigo De Paul.
