With signals in 54 countries, Arise escalates competition across Africa – By Okoh Aihe

The story, last week, that Arise News Channel is live in 54 countries in Africa, including South Africa and nine other Southern African countries on the platform of Multichoice, sent a ball of excitement down my system and, at once, elicited the kind of euphoria and patriotic fervency I feel when a Nigerian is doing something quite outstanding.

And there are so many Nigerians making history and bringing glory to the nation. In nearly every endeavour under the sun, Nigeria boasts of luminaries who brighten the world and bring memorable moments to a people in search of anything comforting, some good news in a welter of bad moments.

In education, sports, entertainment, medicine, business, just to list a few, Nigerians give performances that make something run down your spine and bring wetness to the face. Whether it is Tosin Amusan speeding on the tracks or Victor Osimhen jumping to score an impossible goal or the sheer bravery of Allen Onyema daring competition on international routes by crashing flight ticket costs to London, Nigerians attempt the impossible always and achieve results that shock the world.

Oh, was I elated years ago when I found out that the film, Concussion, I was watching in one international flight was based on the research work by Dr Bennet Omalu on the plight of NFL players who get exposed to what he coined as chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). It was only the Nigerian can-do spirit that sustained him in the fight with powerful members of the NFL who wanted to destroy him and kill the research by a Nigerian who started his early medical school at the University of Nigeria (UNN), Nsukka.

Nigerians fly high when they want to fly, putting behind them the worries of a nation that has refused to hit full gear. With the announcement, Prince Nduka Obaigbena, Chairman and Editor-in-Chief of Thisday Media Group and Arise News, has taken competition to some level beyond immediate imagination. Though a businessman, I have always looked at him as a stuntman in a movie who can risk everything to get desired results. His pocket of surprises is so deep that it is useless guessing what mysteries are laden in there. He has just pulled out one and it is such a whiff of good news for people who have followed the history of broadcasting in Nigeria, especially since the deregulation of the sector in 1992.

Arise News will be received on Multichoice/DSTV Channel 416 in South Africa and contiguous states. Arise is a 24-hours news channel.

Hear this. “We shall continually showcase the emerging African century where Nigeria and other African countries will be some of the leading economies around the world. This is a marathon and not a dash;  we will do for Nigeria and Africa what the CNNs, the BBCs and the Al Jazeeras have done for their nations and regions,” Fauziya Al Mohammed, Obaigbena’s Chief of Staff said in the statement.

This is profoundly true; a statement of hope but also very emblematic of the complexities of TV programming. Launched on June 1, 1980, the Cable News Network (CNN) which enjoys the glistening reference as the first 24-hour news station in the world, didn’t enjoy the respect or cooperation of the broadcast industry which thought that its founder, Ted Turner, was insane. CNN wasn’t invited to major press conferences nor was it allowed to hang its microphones anywhere close. The station was pooh-poohed as the Chicken Noodle Network – CNN.

But one man’s vision persevered and prevailed, challenging the rest of the world to rise beyond the mundane and the daily fixations of life. So, when the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded a few minutes after launch on January 28, 1986, CNN was there to bring it to American homes and the global community. April 15,1989, CNN was at the Tiananmen Square in China to report the protest and massacre of young students. The Gulf War of August 2, 1990 to February 28, 1991 was literally fought in the living rooms of the global community courtesy of CNN.

And wait for this.  When Mikhail S. Gorbachev wanted to dissolve what was left of the USSR and sign himself out of office on December 26, 1991, his pen refused to function and had to borrow the Mont Blanc pen of CNN President, Tom Johnson, to cement a history of no return. It was the end of the Soviet Union and peace has become a stranger to that part of the world with Russia fighting notoriously to reclaim the glory that is long gone.

TV is much about self bravura and recondite intelligence to support actions and proclamations made in the public space. CNN plays this to the hilt.

Speaking days later to the Chicago Tribune, Johnson enthused: ”I wasn`t ever thinking about my pen. We did it! We did it!`-those were the words that came to mind.”

Was it mere coincidence that CNN’s Johnson wasn’t far away from Gorbachev? It’s  a lot of planning, plotting and intentionality. There is so much power in the media which America understands very well and has therefore been very willing to build CNN into a very powerful channel of diplomacy for the country, spreading its tentacles all over the world.

Does Prince Obaigbena have the capacity, creativity and indeed the chutzpah to confront the uncertainties of international TV programming and can he really replicate the epoch breaking achievements of CNN in our part of the world?

As I watch The Morning Show, The Global Business Report, the entertainment segment and live reports from the Oscars in Hollywood, sending a strong team to report from the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, live coverage of grade A events within the country, and indeed cast my mind back to the packaging of Thisday and the glossy Thisday Style, I have no shred of doubt that the Arise News promoter can run his race with peak success. But that is the straight answer that does not accommodate the complexities, jealousy, betrayal, manipulation and, above all, the strict regulations that exist in different jurisdictions.

The constellation of a stellar cast of on-air personalities, including: Dr Reuben Abati, Rufai Oseni, Ayo Mairo-Ese,Ojy Okpe,Steve Ayorinde, Emman Efeni, Rotus Oddiri and many more, perhaps marked the first phase of the station’s  readiness for a new broadcast world, which crystallised in some good news last week.

But it is good that Arise observed that the race is a marathon and not a dash. That is a reality check. Broadcast business is not cheap. Ted Turner suffered to establish the fortunes of CNN. Rupert Murdoch, sometime in December 1990, almost lost the entire fortunes of News Corp which today runs one of the biggest digital real estates in the world, because of some debt that proved difficult to reschedule. Back home, in March 2000, media front runner, Dr Raymond Dokpesi, nearly lost Daar Communications’ Raypower and AIT because of a N350m loan owed to a consortium of banks. Broadcasting is not cheap and it is risky business.

Obaigbena is a very smart fellow and must have more of this type of information than this writer. Otherwise, Arise wouldn’t be enjoying such a stratospheric rise in just over 10 years!

But the station will need more investment, some of the presenters will need more training, at least, to trim their excesses, there may be the need for more programming mix, including live events to attract more TV eyes, because that is what pay TV is all about. The organisation must develop a clear policy on what content to put on the international feed. Prince Obaigbena may need to play the local politics in different jurisdictions. Such is the unenviable fate of the international businessman.

But this is not a journey that Arise has to make alone or any other broadcaster or business person in Nigeria venturing into operations abroad. Multichoice and MTN may have come into Nigeria as private organisations but when there are serious regulatory issues, and there have been several, it becomes a government to government discussion. This writer has been reliably informed that South African businesses are given some incentives by their government to invest in other African countries.

CNN couldn’t become a global brand without the imprimatur of the American government. Nothing stops Arise or any other serious media organisation, for that matter, from enjoying such a discreet stamp of the Nigerian Government.

An industry expert lamented last night, “We do not even have an aggregated information policy in this country.”

Painful observation that it is, but it should not stop the Nigerian Government from recognising Nigerian corporates like Arise that are doing well, and seeking creative ways of encouraging or working with these organisations to help spruce up the nation’s image. Nigeria needs a lot of sprucing up right now.

Alleged violation: NBC threatens Arise TV with final warning

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has given the operators of Arise Television a final warning over an alleged violation of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code.

Director-General of NBC, Balarabe Shehu llelah, gave the warning in a letter to the Chief Executive Officer of Arise Global Limited and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria on Saturday in Abuja.

In the letter titled “Preponderance of derogatory and incendiary remarks: Final warning”, Ilelah said the commission had observed with concern, the preponderance of incendiary remarks allowed on Arise News.

“This letter once again seeks to underscore the tremendous responsibility put on the broadcaster to manage array of guests that may feature on the station from time to time.

“For the benefit of doubt, on Oct. 5 during the programme – ‘The Morning Show’, anchored by Reuben Abati, Rufai Useni and Ayo Mairo Ese, featured Oladotun Hassan and Dele Farotimi as guests.

“The programme contained unguarded incendiary remarks by Dele Farotimi against the legislature, executive, judiciary and Mr President.

“Similarly, On Oct. 6, during the programme “Newsday”, it featured Kenneth Okonkwo (Spokesperson for Labour Party) who used derogatory remarks on air.

“Your attention is therefore drawn to the relevant sections of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code for compliance please,” Ilelah said.

The NBC boss explained further that section 1.10.3 says the broadcaster shall ensure that its presenter does not express his or her opinion in the programme, as a matter of professional standard.

He said section 3.3.1 (a) stipulates that the broadcaster shall ensure that any information given in a programme, in whatever form, is accurate

Illelah said 3.3.3 (c) provided that the broadcaster shall be above inherent biases, prejudices and subjective mindsets

According to section 3.3.1(e), the Broadcaster shall not treat any individual or organisation in an unjust and unfair manner in any programme.

The NBC boss further explained that section 5.3.3(b) of the code stated that the broadcaster shall, in using political materials for news and current affairs programmes, avoid hate speech, inflammatory, derogatory, and divisive remarks of allusions.

“Section 5.5.6 says, the broadcaster shall have a delay mechanism to guard against possible undesirable content.

“Arise TV is advised to install a delay mechanism to guard against possible undesirable contents as prescribed in Section 5.5.6 of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code.

“Please note that henceforth, your station shall be held liable for any infraction on your platform and applicable sanctions shall be imposed as prescribed by Law,” Ilelah stressed.

Tinubu to appoint non-party members to cabinet – APC

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Nicolas Felix, has revealed that the president-elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, will appoint only talented people into his cabinet when he assumes office on May 29th.

Felix made this revelation known while featuring in a political program on Arise TV.

He added that Tinubu’s appointment would be based on competency and not party affiliations.

He noted that every Nigerian matters, regardless of their political party, adding that Tinubu had said he would build a government of national unity.

He said, “Asiwaju is a man that rewards loyalty, he rewards hard work, there are also Nigerians out there who are not members of our party who are also talented and experienced and capable.

“He is going to also look beyond his APC and start picking those who are out there. But I am also very sure as he has stretched his hands of fellowship to say “I want to build a government of national unity, If you are in PDP, If you are in Labour Party, you are in other parties, we are all Nigerians.”

He urged Nigerians to join hands with Tinubu to make Nigeria work again.

“When a president is elected, what is expected of every patriotic Nigerian is to join hands with the President to work together, except you are just here for your selfish interest. If you really want the growth of Nigeria, you want Nigeria to be better. Whatever you have to offer, you have to present yourself for service.

“He has already stretched his hands of fellowship. It is up to them to accept it and join him. I am sure he is not going to be running after people, he has already said come, let’s brainstorm. As many are willing to go to Asiwaju’s door, the President-elect for them to join hands together.”

  • Arise TV Gubernatorial Debate: Matters Arising

Arise TV Gubernatorial Debate: Matters Arising

    PRESS STATEMENT

Last night, Arise TV hosted Delta State gubernatorial candidates to a debate in preparation for the forthcoming elections. We wish to observe as follows.

    1. Given the rising profile and the international image of Arise TV, Deltans had looked forward to a professional, robust, and well-packaged debate devoid of bias and partisanship on the part of the organisers. Unfortunately, that was not the case. The event was poorly organised, and the moderators played the roles of judge and jury that left a sour taste in the mouth of many viewers. Even while the debate was ongoing, the social media space was awash with comments about the haughty and unprofessional conduct of the moderators.

    2. Our gubernatorial candidate, Rt. Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, through the campaign office, had sent his apologies to Arise TV in a letter conveying his inability to participate due to prior scheduled engagements. The letter was sent through Email and WhatsApp to the organisers at 12:49pm on Wednesday, March 15, 2023. To our shock and chagrin, the letter was all over the social media within 30 minutes of our sending it.

    4. Mr. Frank Tietie, the principal moderator of the debate, read out the letters from the PDP and APC explaining their inability to take part in the debate. The PDP letter was straight to the point on why our candidate could not participate in the debate. But the APC letter contained scurrilous attacks on Oborevwori. This was a very unprofessional and unethical act on the part of Arise TV, because it was tantamount to providing air time for APC to malign the person of Rt Hon. Oborevwori.

    4. We note that Mr. Tietie has been a strident critic and antagonist of the Okowa administration. He was a prominent actor in the callous dissemination of false claims on the loan status of Delta State, which the fact checker debunked yesterday. He frequently used his Arise TV platform to spew those lies with impunity and castigate the government. Given his bias and prejudice against the Okowa administration, we were surprised that he was chosen to moderate the debate.

    5. The female moderator, Angela Ajetunmobi, prefaced the question on healthcare with the false statement that pregnant women who require cesarean procedures pay for the services in state hospitals contrary to what obtained in the past. This is absolute bunkum because the Okowa administration rolled over and integrated the free maternal care and free medical care for children under 5 into the contributory health insurance scheme.

    6. The combative – and adversarial – posture of Mr. Tietie in insisting that Rt. Hon. Oborevwori MUST come to Arise TV to speak to Deltans betrays the pretentious neutrality of the moderators. His outburst is not only unethical, it is also insulting and provocative. Besides, there is no provision in our laws that mandates candidates to participate in television debates.

    7. In view of the obvious bad faith and hostility displayed by the moderators towards Rt. Hon. Oborevwori, we have absolutely no confidence in the Arise TV debate programme as currently constituted. This eleventh-hour debate looks more like a set up than a sincere effort to raise the bar of political discourse in our dear State. We reiterate that this debate is ill-conceived, ill-motivated, ill-timed, and ill-intentioned. Our candidate, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori will, therefore, not be participating.

    God bless Delta State.

    Dr. Ifeanyi M. Osuoza.
    Deputy Director, Media & Publicity,
Delta PDP Campaign Council/ State Publicity Secretary,
    Delta State PDP.

  • Arise TV staff sent out of Tinubu’s event in Lagos

Arise TV staff sent out of Tinubu’s event in Lagos

The All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council, APC-PCC, has said a staff of Arise TV staff was caught secretly streaming live its presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, at an event in Lagos.

The APC-PCC Director of Media and Publicity, Bayo Onanuga disclosed this in a post via his Twitter handle.

Onanuga said the journalist was not authorized by anyone and was consequently busted and sent out.

Recall that Tinubu had a meeting with business leaders in Lagos on Friday.

He also alleged that the journalist was on espionage.

He said, “Arise TV cameraman clandestinely streamed live Asíwájú Bola Tinubu’s event in Lagos today. He was not authorized by anyone. He was clearly on espionage, but was busted and sent out. Is journalism by stealth part of the practice by Arise News?”

  • Fighting Dirty in the master’s Name – By Hope O’Rukevbe Eghagha

Fighting Dirty in the master’s Name – By Hope O’Rukevbe Eghagha

Barsisa: Tension in the country over political issues has risen to burning levels. It is frightening. Only God can save us from a descent into anarchy.

Kalagbor: Aren’t we in an anarchic state already? Poverty. Hunger. Lack of trust. Shedding of innocent blood. These have become a refrain in our national discourse!

Majeed: How did we get it so wrong? What went wrong? This is not the Nigeria we grew up in.

Ejine: The one which baffles me is how erstwhile friends have become bitter foes, not greeting each other, not speaking to each other, ready to tear down the bridge of friendship built over time.

Okoli: Why do some people fight so dirty and viciously in the name of their master, for their master?

Ajunwa: It is a good question. It is funny that when some of those so-called masters meet privately on even in public places they hug and laugh off the joke that is politics.

Ngozi: Simple rules of etiquette have been discarded. One of our politicians, was it Adedibu once said that if you want to know who your mother dated before she married your father you should join politics!

Kola: Hahahahaha! Yes o! it was Adedibu, the strong man of Ibadan politics who said it, the man who played Amala politics.

Ngozi: Such bitterness and vile coming from the mouths and hearts of minions. Their principals are more civil when they meet as Ajunwa said.

Isi: Yet their followers will swear and curse at each other. Look at the fierce battle between Arise TV and the media men of Senator Bola Tinubu. How could they be so personal, so brutal?

Ejine: And washing their dirty linen in public.

Rukky: Let them wash their dirty linen in public jor; let them do. Our elders say that the anus of fowl is exposed anytime the wind blows!

Isi: You have come again o, you, and your proverbs!

Helen: Let him dish them out. Our proverbs are rich in thoughts and culture.

Isi: Which one is anus of fowl in this matter?

Elo: That is the koko of the matter. Exposing the rot hidden in the hearts and homes of those who claim to lead us.

Allwell: I am a politician, but I am worried about the savagery on the political scene. Even the two main political parties have not been ale to put their house in order.

Rukky: But politicians thrive when things are chaotic. They pretend to restore order after creating disorder!

Cyril: That na true o! That is how and when they spend security votes on their girlfriends.

    Allwell: That is being sarcastic.

Udechukwu: Sarcastic sagacity! Na wa for grammar.

Isi: Can Arise TV ever be objective on any matter that concerns BAT?

Udechukwu: There is no objectivity anymore. I remember our Mass Communication classes in the university when American trained teachers taught us about objectivity and how we thought CNN and BBC were always objective. They are objective with a slant.

Barsisa: That is right. All media houses have their goals and objectives. Its like Fox News and CNN. They report the same event but with a different slant.

Ejine: Fox News is an entertainment channel; not a serious news channel.

Kalagbor: Some will not agree with you on this.

Isi: Did you guys read the savage attacks on both sides of the gladiators?

Kalagbor: I did. It is now clear that that TV station is pursuing an agenda. Is that what media houses should do?

Majeed: Good question; good question. But that one is hypothesis and hypothesis no be garri!

Udechukwu: That is true o; hypothesis no dey bring garri come table!

Isi: I still believe that reporting should be nuanced. There should be no persona acrimony.

Ngozi: I agree with you Isi. Do you recall how Dr. Walter Ofonagoro as Director-General used the NTA to fight the NPN battles in the Second Republic? How the station became an arm of Ministry of Information? That station subsequently lost its credibility. Who watches NTA these days?

Helen: Sad. NTA used to be great with fantastic programmes until the government decided that TV stations should become propaganda channels for their inanities.

Barsisa: In my view, TV and radio channels should report the news, not make the news. Some of those TV personalities have started creating news out of themselves. They are too partisan.

Majeed: True. If BAT says he doesn’t want to appear for a live debate in their station, they should let him be and let the public decide on what to do. Na by force?

Isi: But why should a politician who wants to govern a country avoid public debates?

Ngozi: That is another matter. But Atiku did not show up for the debate too. He sent his running mate to represent him.

Udechukwu: These are expired old men who cannot withstand a barrage of questions. Did you watch the charade at Chatham House?

    Majeed: Disgraceful!

Allwell: I don’t know why Nigerian politicians should go to London to explain what they plan to do for Nigeria! Those people cannot vote.

Rukky: Colonial mentality is still very much in place. President macron will not go to America to woo people if he wants votes in France. We need a factory reset in the country! Period.

Elo: Hohohohoho! I laugh in Isoko!

Philo: It is not a laughing matter.

Cyril: It is not a laughing matter, yet I cannot cry for Nigeria.

    Elo: Overtake don overtake overtake!

    Kalagbor: What is our conclusion?

Ejine: Ajunwa can give us a summary.

Ajunwa: We have resolved that media houses should not be partisan and should not fight dirty. That they should not have paymasters whose views they push. That objectivity must be maintained to guarantee the integrity of news reporting. That news reporters are not, should be newsmakers while reporting society to the world. That once an umpire joins the game, he can no longer be a neutral person.

Isi: Great! Must politicians desecrate all public institutions?

Kalagbor: Must journalists allow themselves to be used to desecrate public institutions?

APC accuses Arise News of planning with PDP to embarrass Tinubu

The All Progressives Congress (APC), Presidential Campaign Council (PCC), has accused Chairman and Editor-in-Chief of THISDAY and Arise News Television, Nduka Obaigbena, of conniving with the PDP to embarrass the APC flagbearer, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, by organizing townhall meetings.

Reacting to the rebuttal issued by Obaigbena, the pair of Dele Alake and Bayo Onanuga of the Media Directorate of the APC PCC in a joint statement alleged that the Arise News townhall meetings were sponsored by the PDP to embarrass Tinubu.

the statement reads; “In his first statement attacking us, Obaigbena craftily attempted to mis-characterise as an attack on free speech, our principled stand against his blackmail to have Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu appear on Arise TV and its PDP sponsored Town Hall meetings.”

“In the second statement, he was still adamant that our candidate must attend his town hall debate, despite our stance that our candidate is already executing another communications strategy to reach the most important target: the Nigerian voters.

“We, repeat again: We will not make our candidate available to validate a scheme which, in the light of unassailable information at our disposal, is nothing but a racket by the Arise News owner, designed to embarrass our candidate,”the Tinubu team said.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) recalls that Tinubu left the country for the United Kingdom ahead of his scheduled engagement at Chatham House in London and could not attend the Presidential Town Hall meeting organized by Arise News for candidates of the major four political parties.

While Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, his counterpart in New Nigeria Peoples Party, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Labour Party’s Peter Obi, participated, Tinubu has opted out.

Recall that Onanuga had knocked the organizers of the town hall meeting for repeatedly promoting the event using his principal’s image and name, despite earlier notification that he won’t attend.

PDP knocks Tinubu over absence at Arise TV town hall meeting (VIDEO)

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, of “running” to the UK to dodge the Arise TV town hall meeting.

According to PDP,  the ruling party candidate in the 2023 election is avoiding questions on his plan to relocate the FCT from Abuja to Lagos.

The opposition pointed out that this was why Tinubu headed to the UK to speak on the economy, security and foreign policy at Chatham House on Monday, December 5.

The Presidential Town Hall Series Three on Sunday dwelled on education, healthcare, poverty and human capital.

PDP also warned Arise TV to desist from using its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, picture to promote the town hall meeting.

Bayo Onanuga, the spokesperson of the Tinubu presidential campaign organisation, had said Tinubu would not be available for the Arise TV town hall meeting.

However, the National Publicity Secretary of PDP,  Kola Ologbondiyan, in a statement on Sunday, December 4, alleged that Tinubu ran to the UK to avoid responding to questions on his alleged plan to move the federal capital territory from Abuja to Lagos.

The statement reads in part: “The plan to relocate the federal capital was conceptualised and propagated by the Tinubu campaign and only became hysterical as a result of the public ire against such an atrocious plot to sequester the nation’s capital for his personal selfish interest.”

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that Arise News Presidential Town Hall Meeting Series 3 was to feature the presidential candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar ; Labour Party, Peter Obi; New Nigeria Peoples Party, Rabiu Kwankwaso; and the Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The Arise News Presidential Town Hall Series Three was held in collaboration with the Centre for Democracy & Development.

NBC fines Arise TV over misleading report on Bola Tinubu

Arise Television has been fined two million naira by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) following a fake report aired on the station concerning the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Tinubu.

Recall that Arise TV had aired a report that the Independent National Broadcasting Commission (INEC) was investigating Tinubu’s alleged crime bordering on narcotics and illicit drugs. perpetrated in the United States.

A statement purportedly issued by the INEC had gone viral on social media but the electoral body, on Saturday debunked the report, saying it was a handiwork of mischiefs.

Although, Arise TV had apologolized to Tinubu and entire Nigerians for airing a false and misleading content, it wqs not enough to avoid being penalized by NBC.
