    Police foil armed robbery attempt in Abuja

    Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command says it has foiled an armed robbery attempt at a hotel in Kubwa, Abuja.

    The command’s Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Mariam Yusuf, in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, said that police personnel from the command engaged the suspected armed robbers in gun duel while on routine patrol.

    ”The operatives, on routine patrol, had engaged the robbers in a fierce gun duel, where one of the suspects sustained serious gunshot injuries.

    ”The suspect was later rushed to the hospital where he was confirmed dead by the doctor,” he said.

    According to her, one berratta pistol, three rounds of live ammunition, one silver Mazda space wagon and plate numbers were recovered from the suspect.

    Yusuf said that operatives from the command had also arrested a 20-year-old man for alleged culpable homicide, on Kasuwa-Dere area of Gwagwalada Area Council of FCT.

    She said that the suspect was arrested by detectives from Gwagwalada Police Divisional Headquarters, following credible intelligence on the gruesome murder of a yet-to- be-identified middled-aged woman.

    The PPRO added that the suspect, identified by another victim, had confessed to being a member of a notorious phone snatching syndicate operating at Gwagwalada axis.

    Yusuf said one sharp knife used for stabbing the deceased and one techno phone, belonging to the late woman, were recovered from the suspect.

    According to her, the suspects will be arraigned in court upon conclusion of investigation.

    The Police Command in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has arrested six suspects over alleged car snatching and armed robbery in Kubwa and Garki axis of the territory.

    The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the FCT, ASP Mariam Yusuf, in a statement on Sunday in Abuja said all the suspects were arrested within last week.

    She said three of the suspects were arrested during different coordinated intelligence operations by the Anti Car Theft Unit of the Command.

    Yusuf said the suspects had confessed to be members of a notorious syndicate terrorising the FCT.

    She said the exhibits recovered from the suspects are two silver coloured Toyota Corolla, two silver coloured Toyota RAV4 and one black coloured lexus.

    Similarly, the PPRO said Operatives from Kubwa Division had arrested a four-man robbery gang around Kubwa Garden axis.

    She said the suspects were arrested after robbing their victims but added that one of the gang members sustained gunshot injuries in his bid to escape arrest.

    Yusuf said the suspect with gunshot injuries was taken to the hospital where the doctor confirmed him dead while receiving treatment.

    She said the other gang members had confessed of being responsible for terrorising Kubwa axis.

    The PPRO said three machetes, one dagger, one cutter, two Laptops, nine mobile phones, two plasma TV and jewelries were recovered from the suspects.

    She said efforts were being intensified by the command to arrest the fleeing suspects.

    Yusuf said the suspects would be arraigned in court upon conclusion of investigation.

    She encouraged residents to report all suspicious movements, emergency or distress to the command on the following mobile phone numbers: 08032003913, 08061581938, 07057337653 and 08028940883.

    The PPRO said the conduct of Police Officers could be reported to the Public Complaint Bureau (PCB) on 09022222352.

    Police repel armed robbery attack in Abuja

    The Police Command in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) said it had repelled a four-man armed robbery gang after dispossessing victims of their possessions in Gwarimpa area of Abuja.

    ASP Mariam Yusuf, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the FCT, disclosed this in a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday.

    Yusuf said the incident happened at the early hours of Tuesday at 7th Avenue, Gwarimpa Estate, Abuja.

    She explained that two members of the gang were killed after attempting to escape with the stolen items, while the others fled.

    According to her, all the stolen items, including computer gadgets, mobile phones and a huge sum of money were recovered by police operatives.

    Similarly, she disclosed that a gang of armed robbers also, on Tuesday, attacked a resident of Apo-Dutse, along Apo axis, stealing his belongings.

    Yusuf said the robbers shot the resident dead, leaving his security guard, who is currently being treated for gunshot injury.

    While commiserating with the families and friends of the deceased, she disclosed that the police had launched a manhunt to arrest and prosecute all fleeing suspects.

    The PPRO reiterated the unflinching commitment of the command to ensure the protection of lives and property within the FCT.

    She called on residents to report distress or suspicious movements within their vicinity to the command’s emergency phone numbers on 08032003913, 08061581938, 07057337653 and 08028940883.

    Yusuf also said that the conduct of police officers could be reported to the Public Complaint Bureau (PCB) on 09022222352.

    Lady lands in hospital with gunshot wound after wrestling armed robbers

    A business woman, Miss Monica Ogenyi on Saturday narrated how she fought off Gunmen who wanted to rob her of her money.

    The lady, who was shot on the shoulders for disobeying the armed robbers, fought with her attacker even with the gunshot wounds she sustained.

    Speaking from her hospital bed at Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki, Miss Oginyi said said the robbers attacked her in broad day light at her shop located at Afikpo street by Ezioweri Street in Abakaliki, capital of Ebonyi state.

    According to her, one of the armed robbers who operated with a motorcycle ordered her at gun point to surrender a large sum of money she made from her sales.

    “But rather than hand over the money, I confronted the gunman prompting him to shoot me at her lower shoulder.

    She noted that in spite of the gun shot, she summoned courage to seize the man with both of them falling into the drainage system in front of her shop.

    Miss Oginyi, who deal on foams, however, lamented that on lookers and passersby did not come to her assistance while the fight was going on.

    Miss Monica said the gunman would have been arrested if the on lookers and passers by had come to her aid.

    She said that having resisted the gun man, he quickly jumped on a waiting motorcycle and ran away.

    An eyewitness who did not give her name described the incident as shocking noting that they never knew the gunman was an armed robber.

    When This Reporter arrived the scene of the incident, there was atmosphere of fear and uncertainty with many asking for police presence in area.

    Police in Ebonyi state, Mrs Loveth Oda said she was yet to get details of the incident at the time of this report.

    She promised to react when she has been briefed by the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the area where the incident occurred.

    She was yet to do so at press time.

  • Police arraign man, 25, over alleged armed robbery

    The police on Wednesday arraigned a 25-year-old man, John Victor, before an Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court over alleged armed robbery.

    The defendant of no fixed address is standing trial on a charge of armed robbery.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Olubu Apata, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on May 10, in Ado-Ekiti.

    He alleged that the defendant, using a dangerous weapon, had inflicted injury on one Sunday Olagunju in an attempt to rob him of his motorcycle.

    He said the offence contravened Section 2 (1) (a) and (b) of the Robbery and Firearm Act Cap RII Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.

    Counsel to the defendant, Mr Gboyega Abiola, urged the court to grant him bail with a promise that he would not jump bail.

    The prosecutor, however, objected the bail application and called the attention of the court to the use of dangerous weapon involved in the case.

    The Magistrate, Mrs Kehinde Awosika, in her ruling, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100, 000 with one surety in like sum.

    Awosika said that the surety must be a blood relation of the defendant.

    She therefore adjourned the case until July 6 for hearing.

    According to reports, Okorie was coming back from an event on the 12th of December when the sad incident took place.

    Her car was riddled with bullets and gunshots were fired at her.

    Police arrest 2,175 for kidnapping, armed robbery, others

    The Inspector General of Police ( I-G ), Mr Mohammed Adamu, said the police have arrested 2,175 suspects for armed robbery, kidnapping, cultism and banditry since the launch of the “Operation Puff Adder”

    A statement by the Force spokesman, Frank Mba, a Deputy Commissioner of Police, on Wednesday in Abuja, said Adamu disclosed this when a delegation of Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Nasarawa State Chapter, paid him a visit.

    Adamu said that between April 5 when the operation was launched, 63 kidnap victims were rescued unhurt by the police operatives.

    He said that within this period under review, 834 arms including two – rocket launchers 19,009 live ammunition were recovered.

    The police boss said Oyo State recored the highest number of recovery with 9,500 live ammunition.

    Adamu called for tougher legislations against kidnapping and banditry, including possible state seizure of assets linked to illicit proceeds from kidnapping and other heinous crimes.

    He said that if enacted, the act would be a strong disincentive to potential kidnappers and other violent criminals.

    The I-G noted that the call has become necessary against the increasingly daring resort to these forms of crimes by criminal elements in the society.

    He said that the police was rejigging their strategies to ensure proactive interception of illicit weapons coming into country.

    According to him, a good number of the cases are already being prosecuted in courts across the country, while others are still under investigation.

    He commended his men for a good job and the public for their support to police and other security agencies in the country.

  • Plateau: Police arrest 12 over kidnapping, armed robbery

    The Police in Plateau have arrested 12 suspects over kidnapping and armed robbery activities in the state.

    Mr Austin Agbonlahor, the Commissioner of Police in charge of Plateau Command, made this known when he presented the suspects to newsmen in Jos on Monday.

    Agbonlahor said three of the suspects were arrested in connection with the abduction of Aliyu Aminu, 6, from Angwan Rogo Community of Jos North Local Government Area (LGA).

    The commissioner said that two other suspects were arrested for the kidnap of Mrs. Adama Umaru, 56, and Miss Rabiat Umaru, 16, in Wase LGA of the state.

    He explained that six of the armed robbery suspects were nabbed after robbing a business area at Jenta Adamu Community of Jos North LGA and made away with cash and valuables.

    Agbonlahor explained that one suspect was arrested for robbing people at West of Mines area in Jos North LGA.

    “We have successfully tackled cases of kidnapping, armed robbery and other crimes within the period under review.

    “In all cases of kidnapping, the command rescued the victims without paying any ransom and arrested some of the suspects who perpetrated the acts.

    “We have arrested three suspects for kidnapping a teenager, Aliyu Aminu and demanded a ransom of N12 million; and two other suspects for kidnapping Adama Umaru and her daughter, Rabiat Umaru,’’ he said.

    The commissioner explained that two suspects; one for kidnapping and the other for armed robbery were still at large.

    He said that efforts were being made to arrest the suspects.

    Agbonlahor added that the suspects would be charged to court as soon as investigations were concluded.

    The police chief also said the command recovered 115 rustled cows belonging to Mr Ibrahim Sulaiman of Sabo Gida-Karnar Community in Jos LGA.

    Agbonlahor, however, regretted that no arrest was made to that effect as the rustlers abandoned the cows and fled when they noticed that policemen were trailing them.

    The commissioner commended plateau residents for cooperating with security agencies in ensuring that criminality in the state was reduced to the barest minimum.

    He urged the residents to report any suspected movement around their vicinity to the security agencies.

    Police arrest Deputy Superintendent of Prisons for alleged involvement in armed robbery

    The Enugu State Police Command have arrested a Deputy Superintendent of Prisons in the Nigerian Prisons Service, Mr Collins Ugwu for alleged involvement in armed robbery.

    Ugwu, a native of Ezza in Ebonyi State, who resides in Abuja, where he works at the headquarters of the Nigeria Prisons Service, was nabbed in Enugu on June 26.

    The senior prisons officer was arrested with suspected accomplices, Ifeanyi Ozor, a native of Enugu State who is also resident in Abuja; and Smart Osetu from Oguta in Imo State.

    The Commissioner of Police, Enugu State, Mr. Mohammed Danmallam, disclosed, while parading the suspects, that apart from armed robbery, the prisons officer and his gang were also involved in conspiracy, malicious damage, stealing and ‘obtaining by tricks.’

    The Enugu police chief revealed that Ugwu and his colleagues were apprehended after the police gathered intelligence information on their activities.

    According to him, the gang stayed around the premises of commercial banks to monitor prospective victims who had come to withdraw money.

    Danmallam said, “The suspects (Ugwu, Ozor and Osetu) belong to a syndicate that specialises in monitoring anyone that has gone to bank to make withdrawals and trail them to a point where they can smartly force the door or the windscreen (of the victims’ car) open with their instrument and steal the said amount.

    They are also part of a syndicate that buys goods from traders and generate fake payment alert to the owner of the goods without him knowing.

    They were nabbed along Ogui Road, Enugu by the operatives of the Enugu State Police Command on June 26, 2018, following intelligence information gathered concerning their nefarious activities.”

    Items recovered from the suspects, according to Danmallam, include a Golf car with registration number Abuja RBC 220 KF, and a broken plug which they allegedly use in “scratching down” the window of the car to steal from their victims.

    Ugwu rebuffed attempts by journalists to get him to explain why a deputy superintendent of prisons would venture into armed robbery and other criminal activities, especially after witnessing, from close quarters, the harsh treatment meted out to criminals in Nigerian prisons, where they are compelled to live in sub-human conditions.

    Sitting quietly on the bare floor, Ugwu refused to respond to questions.

    He also bowed his head to prevent journalists from taking pictures of his face.

     

  • Armed robber shoots partner to death during operation in Bayelsa

    An armed robber died from his partner’s bullet during a foiled robbery attack on one Francis Chibueze, along Bakery road, Azikoro village, Yenagoa.

    Confirming the incident on Sunday, the spokesman of the State Police Command, DSP Asinim Butswat, told Newsmen of that the armed robber mistakenly shot and killed his partner.

    On Dec. 22, at about 8 p.m., a gang of two armed robbers attacked one Francis Chibueze of Bakery Road, Azikoro Village, Yenagoa. “As they were trying to attack their victim, one the robbers mistakenly shot and killed his partner, while the victim, Chibueze, escaped unhurt.

    “The deceased armed robber was identified as Thankgod Smith, a 25 years old man, and the partner who shot him is Peter Napoleon, 23,’’ Butswat told NAN.

    He said the suspect came to the Azikoro Police Station on Dec. 23, and turned himself in. The spokesman said the suspect confessed to the armed robbery and killing of his gang member.

    “The suspected armed robber led Police detectives to an uncompleted building on Bakery Road, Azikoro Village, where the gun was recovered,” he said.
