Police detain fake Army officer in Nasarawa

The Police Command in Nasarawa State  has arrested and detained one Godswill Achili for allegedly impersonating a soldier to rob unsuspecting members of the public.

This is contained in a statement signed by SP Ramhan Nansel, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state made available to Journalists on Sunday in Lafia.

Nansel said that the operatives attached to Angwan Lambu Division, Keffi, arrested the fake soldier following an intelligence-led operation.

The PPRO explained that the suspect was apprehended while dressed in military camouflage.

“Upon interrogation, he confessed to impersonating a soldier and engaging in armed robbery.

“Further investigations revealed that he is a member of a criminal syndicate operating in both the Federal Capital Territory and Nasarawa State.

“The syndicate operates wearing full military uniforms with a black, unregistered Toyota Avalon, targeting unsuspecting members of the public traveling between Keffi, New Karu, and the FCT.

“He lures victims into his vehicle under pretenses before robbing them of valuables, such as money and mobile phones,” Nansel added.

The police spokesperson said that based on investigation, the other two members of the syndicate remained at large, and efforts were underway to bring them to justice.

He said that the Commissioner of Police, Shettima Jauro-Mohammed, urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movement to the police to curb criminal activities in the state.

Army dismisses claims of automatic promotion

The Nigerian Army has dismissed claims that the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has introduced automatic promotion for personnel who have served in their current ranks for five years or more.

This is contained in a statement by the Director, Army Public Relations, Maj.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, on Tuesday in Abuja.

Nwachukwu described the claims as misleading and baseless, saying it was a deliberate misinformation calculated to mislead personnel as well as members of the public.

He explained that promotion in the army was a structured, merit-based exercise governed by clearly defined statutory regulations and provisions, adding that it is neither arbitrary nor subject to social media speculations.

According to him, the conditions for elevation in rank are meticulously outlined in the Nigerian Army Administrative Policies and Procedures (Revised 2023), and the Armed Forces of Nigeria Harmonised Terms and Conditions of Service for Soldiers, Ratings and Airmen (2024).

“Among others, key requirements for promotion by the Armed Forces include but not limited to serving the stipulated minimum period on a substantive rank.

“Successful completion of requisite professional courses, maintaining satisfactory disciplinary and performance record and meeting medical and physical fitness standards.

“It must be emphasised that the Nigerian Army, like other Services of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, adhere to unified standards of promotion criteria.

“The Nigerian Army will, therefore, not deviate from these established protocols, which ensure fairness, professionalism, and operational effectiveness across the services.

“The public is thus urged to disregard the deceptive publication, that the COAS has introduced an automatic promotion for personnel who have served in their current ranks for five years or more, as it by no means holds any credibility.”

Nwachukwu added the army chief remained resolute in his commitment to the welfare, career progression, and professional development of personnel, as encapsulated in his “Soldier First” mantra.

“He will not act in a manner that will insidiously undermine due process and international best practice,” he said.

40% of army personnel lack accommodation – COAS

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, says over 40 per cent of the Nigerian Army personnel are without accommodation.

Oluyede made this known on Thursday, during the inauguration of the newly constructed ‘Bola Ahmed Tinubu Barracks’ Asokoro, Abuja.

He said, “Your Excellency may recall that on assumption of the office of the Chief of Army Staff, one of the critical issues on the table before you was the fact that about 40 per cent of Nigerian Army personnel are not accommodated.”

He said that the Nigerian army still faced an acute shortage of accommodation, which must be addressed as they continue to defeat insecurity nationwide and reintegrate frontline troops into the barracks.

According to him, the project being Inaugurated today is only the phases one and two of the original plan.

“In specific terms, the project comprises 16 Major General Quarters, 17 Brigadier General Quarters, 3×20 family Major to Colonel Quarters, 30×20 Family Lieutenant to Captain Quarters, and 60×30 Family Senior Non-Commissioned Officers Quarters.

“Others are 6×30 Family Corporal and Below Quarters, 40×21 Corporal and Below Quarters.

“These translate to accommodation for 614 personnel consisting of 170 officers and 444 soldiers and their families,” he said.

The COAS thanked President Tinubu for his commitment and passion for ensuring that men and women in uniform had affordable, decent, and befitting accommodation to live while in service.

He said that naming the new and modern army barracks after President Tinubu was just a humble way of giving honour to whom honour is due.

Oluyede said that it was an appreciation of his extraordinary support and commitment to improving the welfare and operational needs of the army, particularly in reducing its accommodation burden.

He said that the barracks project was initiated and executed by his predecessors Lt.-Gen. Faruk Yahya and Late Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, who recognised the critical need for additional accommodation for the increasing number of Nigerian Army establishments in Abuja.

Oluyede added that they both took the bold step to initiate the construction of the barracks.

“Today, we celebrate the visionary leadership and relentless efforts that created the foundation for us to complete and commission this project,” he said.

We’ll not compromise your welfare, Tinubu assures soldiers

President Bola Tinubu, on Thursday, assured officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army that their welfare would not be compromised.

The President gave the assurance at the inauguration of the newly constructed “Bola Ahmed Tinubu Barracks,” named after him, in Abuja.

He said the barracks project aligned with the federal government’s commitment to enhancing troops’ welfare, including providing adequate office and residential accommodation.

According to him, knowing that the federal government is always ready to meet the needs of troops to fulfill their mandates is essential for winning battles.

“You are our heroes and I thank you for what you have been doing for this country.

“I commend the Chief of Army Staff for his foresight in developing the remarkable barracks for our courageous men and women.

“We appreciate the officers and personnel who contributed in various ways to the timely completion of this project,” said the President.

He said the government would continue to commit resources to improve the welfare of soldiers.

“What you all are doing for us is extremely remarkable, is appreciated and the only way we can show this is a continued support for men and women in our uniform,” he said.

The president commended the leadership of the Nigerian Army for its foresight in initiating and completing the project in record time.

He also commended the late army chief, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, for his impactful contribution to the development of the Nigerian Army.

In his remarks, Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), reiterated the army’s commitment to upholding the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and supporting its flourishing democracy.

Oluyede pledged the army’s unflinching support to the Tinubu administration in its effort to improve the country’s socio-economic and security fortune.

  • Nigerian army denies abandoning wounded soldier

Nigerian army denies abandoning wounded soldier

The Nigerian Army has denied the allegation by one of its wounded soldiers, Lance Cpl. Itodo David, that he had been abandoned at the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital (NARHK) Kaduna.

The Director, Army Public Relations, Maj.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, made the rebuttal in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.

Nwachukwu said the army received the allegation with utmost concern the very touching and pathetic story of the soldier as narrated in a trending audio visual circulating in the social media.

He said the narration portrayed that the soldier had sustained an injury while on a combat operation and has been left in a state of abandonment and neglect since the incident.

According to him, though it is not untrue that Itodo had suffered a gunshot injury back in 2015, it was successfully managed at the same 44 NARHK and was fully restored to active life.

“Disturbing as Itodo’s current situation is, the narration did not, however, give a true picture of what transpired.

“He failed to acknowledge the untiring effort of the Nigerian army to provide medical and psychological support for the healing of the soldier and several other ailing personnel who had received medical intervention both within and outside the country.

“Lance Cpl Itodo David , a 33 year old male soldier is currently admitted in 44 NARHK following a complete spinal cord injury sustained four years ago, when he was knocked down by a fast moving vehicle while riding his motorbike at Abia State on Sept. 7, 2020.

“He was then resuscitated at the Federal Medical Centre Owerri before he was evacuated to 82 Division Medical Services and Hospital (DMSH) Enugu.

“He was subsequently referred on three months post injury with Quadriplegia (paralysis of both arms and legs), muscle atrophy (loss of muscle mass) and multiple pressure sores over the occiput, arms and the gluteal region as well as fracture and displacement of the cervical vertebra,” he said.

Nwachukwu said that the Magnetic Resonance Image (MRI) revealed complete spinal cord transection injury.

He said the current situation, as revealed in the medical evaluation, indicated that Itodo’s inability to walk was permanent, which had been adequately explained to the soldier.

This finding, according to Nwachukwu, was corroborated by medical experts both within and outside the shores of the country, who conducted both physical and remote medical reviews of his condition.

He added that several medical interventions had been made to ameliorate his condition and had been placed on physiotherapy to improve his muscle tone, while the pressure sores were continuously dressed and managed and had also been regularly attended to by psychologists.

“The soldier has thus been on Conservative management in the hospital and not abandoned as wrongly portrayed in the video.

“The leadership of the Nigerian army genuinely empathizes with the personnel and wishes that it could do more to bring the soldier back to his feet in the face of a medically feasible opportunity,” he added.

He further tasked the newly promoted officers to lead by example and evolve “out of the box” ideas and innovations to speedily tackle contemporary
    security challenges bedevilling the nation.

The winging ceremony was conducted at the closing of the 2024 COAS Annual Conference held on Wednesday in Abuja.

In his remarks, the COAS said the winging of the pilots, engineers and technicians was to strengthen army’s professionalism and combat readiness, utilising his command philosophy.

“Their winging is a morale booster and confirms their certification to fly and maintain the Turkish Bayraktar TB2 drones in our inventory.

“The Nigerian Army plans to procure additional unmanned aerial systems in the coming year to enhance its operations across all theatres.

“I am aware that Mr President is currently presenting the 2025 Budget proposal to the National Assembly for consideration and speedy passage.

“The Nigerian army looks forward to a smooth project defence and timely release of appropriated funds in the new year to facilitate its activities,” he said.

The Commander, Nigerian Army Space Command, Brig.-Gen. UG Ogeleka, said the army had in 2022, sent 35 officers and 11 soldiers from Nigerian Route 3 Piloted aircraft System Regiments to train in the operation and maintenance of the Bayraktar TB2 drone in Turkey.

Ogeleka said the Nigerian government acquired 43 of the drones to support the army operation in the North West Theater.

According to him,the trained crew comprised locally piloted aircraft pilots, mission operators, avionics and mechanical engineers and technicians.

“Overall, we have 14 trained locally piloted aircraft pilots, seven mission operators and 23 engineers and technicians.

“They did the project with 46 trained pilots and technicians from Bayraktar TB2 drone.

“However, for the purpose of this wining ceremony, I want to present 22 of them because others are engaged in operational duty,” he said.

The commander said the personnel had since the deployment of Project Guideline in 2022, successfully conducted several operations including intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, as well as precision strikes within Kaduna and Niger State environment.

He revealed that the team had conducted 254 sorties and a total flight time of 1,664 from October 2022 to date.

  • Army’s continuing war on Okuama – By Pius Mordi

Army’s continuing war on Okuama – By Pius Mordi

More than nine months after 17 soldiers were killed at Okuama during a mission the Army is yet to explain to Nigerians, the revenge operation in the community which left the community completely devastated with the indigenes forced to seek refuge in surrounding forests is festering. Two of the community leaders who were arrested by the military were reported to have to died in army custody after spending months in detention without trial.

Before leaving Okuama community having levelled it to ground zero, Sheriff Oborevwori, governor of Delta State, had on March 18 visited the theatre of operations after previously sympathising with the military over the killing. Unfortunately, the army refused him entry into the village. Despite the disrespect, Oborevwori has at all times been cooperative with the army authorities. He visited the military high command in Abuja to further engage with them on the unfortunate incident. But despite having to deal with the humanitarian tragedy that become the lot of Okuama people who became internally displaced, the task of rebuilding Okuama and resettling its people have been entirely left to him while the army continued its hostile disposition.

President-General of Okuama community development association, Pa James Achovwuko Oghoroko and five other leaders – Prof. Arthur Ekpekpo, Chief Belvis Adogbo, Pa. Dennis Okugbaye, Pa Anthony Ahwemuria, and Mrs Rita Akata –  were arrested between August 18 and 20, 2024. It was a brazen move that undermines civil authority and paper over the underlying factors behind the so-called ‘peacekeeping’ mission of the soldiers that unilaterally stormed Okuama on the fateful day without recourse to the local authorities, including the Police and the local government council. This December, Pa James Achovwuko Oghoroko, the elderly president general of the town, passed on while still under military custody.

The army authorities have used the genuine sympathy Nigerians felt for the fallen soldiers to sweep under the carpet the real crisis festering in oiling producing communities from the activities of oil thieves. There are networks of cartels involved in what has become a thriving industry that involves uniformed security operatives ostensibly deployed to curb the ceaseless breaching of the economic lifeline of the country.

In Fisayo Soyombo’s exposé while investigating the prevalent thievery in the harnessing of crude oil, the founder of Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) revealed what we have always known – that oil thievery cannot be checked because of the high level network of individuals involved in the business.

Speaking on Arise Television after he was briefly arrested alongside oil thieves that was gleefully announced by the military, Soyombo said everything he told his interrogators was revealed to oil thieves within 24 hours.

The carte blanche given the military to handle the investigation into the killing of the 17 servicemen was a grand betrayal of Nigerians. It was a farce. Its unlikely there was any genuine investigation beyond making the Okuama community the expendable pawns. And after two of the community leaders died while still under army custody, it is shocking that President Bola Tinubu is yet to stop the shenanigan going on within the military circle. He has not directed his Attorney-General to intervene and undertake a credible investigation into the saga. After Senator Ovie Omo-Agege called for an independent investigation into the circumstances that led to the death of the Okuama community leaders and Senator Ede Dafinone pleaded with the army to release the other detainees, the army said it would investigate the deaths. Do they really expect to taken seriously with their investigation?

Okuama was not a war zone to make the community active combatants that could be treated as enemy combatants subject to only military jurisdiction. These civilians just got caught in the crossfire between highly placed godfathers of oil thieves. Whatever is the outcome the army’s ‘investigation’ cannot be taken seriously when they have failed to tell Nigerians the nature of ‘peacekeeping’ its personnel got into at Okuama ab intio.

It’s already getting very late for civil authorities to step in and begin a credible investigation into the Okuama saga. If crude oil is said to be a curse, Okuama people are going through the hottest part of hell from the exploitation of the black gold within their land and their willful neglect by the federal government. Tinubu should save the oil producing community who are caught in a crossfire by powerful oil thieves. If the killing of the 17 servicemen is not utilised as an opportunity to restore a measure of sanity among security men deployed to protect oil platforms, sooner than later, another Okuama will happen somewhere else in the Niger Delta and the impoverished indigenes will be caught in the crossfire again.

    Postscript

Yakubu’s farcical diatribe on Ghana elections

Unlike his electoral umpire, Mahmoud Yakubu, President Bola Tinubu was effusive in his verdict on the recent Ghana elections where the incumbent government was voted out. While he called on other ECOWAS members countries to draw inspiration from the peaceful and credible conduct of the poll that saw the opposition candidate defeat the sitting vice president, the chairman of Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmoud Yakubu, was unabashedly exultant.

He strangely ascribed the success of the Ghana polls as what he invented to conduct the 2023 general elections in Nigeria that was ‘copied’ by Ghana. His claim bordering on hallucination has left critics wondering what the folks at INEC smoke or drink.

If his tales of phantom technical glitch to explain the failure to declare and upload results right at the polling units as well as the result sheets being mutilated through crude and fraudulent alteration of numbers were not enough, his infamous ‘go to court’ verdict in the dead of the night unravelled him.

In subsequent elections held in some individual states, Yakubu could not redeem himself. In that of Edo State particularly, it all came apart for him. Its difficult to imagine what he was thinking to blurt what he did on the Ghana election.

But we should take solace in what Tinubu said in urging the rest of ECOWAS to study how that country was not only able to conduct a peaceful poll, but also make it credible that the candidate and incumbent Vice President of the government threw in the towel even before the counting of votes was concluded.

Going by his statement, Tinubu wants other countries, including Nigeria, I presume, to study how Ghana did it. But he cannot waste the opportunity by still keeping Yakubu at INEC. Yakubu cannot learn it, if he can, he is incapable of organising credble polls. He had two opportunities in 2019 and 2023, but failed on each occasion.

Army opens up over claims of French military base in Maiduguri

The Headquarters, Theatre Command, Joint Task Force, North East, Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) of the Nigerian Army, has dismissed claims of the establishment of a French military base in Maiduguri.

In a statement on Monday, Capt. Reuben Kovangiya, Army Public Relations, OPHK, described the claims as baseless and misleading.

The clarification followed allegations by a social media influencer, Mahdi Shehu, on his X handle, claiming that a French military base had been established in Maiduguri.

Shehu supported his claim with a video showing the acting General Officer Commanding (GOC) 7 Division, Brig.-Gen. Abubakar Haruna, alongside a foreign officer, who he alleged to be a French military representative.

Kovangiya, however, clarified that the video in question was recorded during a recent press briefing at Maimalari Cantonment, Maiduguri, after the donation of equipment to the army by the British Military Advisory Training Team (BMATT).

“The officer seen in the video is a representative of BMATT, not a French military official.

“The donation, received by the Theatre Commander, Maj.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, on Oct. 25, was part of an ongoing military partnership with BMATT to strengthen counter-IED capabilities in the theatre of operations,” he said.

Kovangiya emphasised that there was no French military presence in Maiduguri, nor any plans to establish one.

He accused Shehu of deliberately spreading falsehoods and attempting to manipulate public opinion through the use of doctored content.

“The claims made by Shehu Mahdi are baseless misrepresentations and a deliberate attempt to cause misinformation and incite the public. Such antics are malicious and aimed at gaining cheap popularity,” he added.
