Army retrieves four bodies from Mount Everest

Nepalese soldiers have retrieved four bodies and a skeleton from Mount Everest and the neighbouring peaks of Lhotse and Nuptse during a cleaning operation.

The recruits collected 11 tons of rubbish since April, according to the army.

Mount Everest At 8,849 metres, is the highest mountain in the world.

It has also gained the sad notoriety of being the world’s highest rubbish dump.

Tonnes of broken tents and clothing, food packaging, cookers, empty water bottles, beer cans and oxygen bottles lie there, left behind by thousands of adventurers.

There is also a lot of human waste and dozens of corpses, some of which mountaineers even use as trail markers.

When people die on the mountain, they are often left behind.

This is because recovering a frozen corpse is difficult and expensive it costs between 30,000 euros to 60,000 euros (32,000 dollars to 64,500 dollars).

This is according to U.S. mountaineer and blogger Alan Arnette.

In most cases, a team of six to 10 experienced Sherpas with oxygen cylinders were deployed and a helicopter flies the body off the mountain.

However, some families also left their deceased loved ones there because they loved the mountain so much.

  • Army debunks alleged mass killing in South East

Army debunks alleged mass killing in South East

The Nigerian Army (NA) has denied  allegation of mass killing in the South Eastern Nigeria, as alleged by Simon Ekpa, a self acclaimed leader of the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB).

This is contained in a statement by the Director, Army Public Relations, Maj.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, on Wednesday in Abuja.

Nwachukwu said that Ekpa, one of the  leaders of the IPOB terrorists had been carrying out  mischievous and systematic campaign of calumny against the  army.

He said that Ekpa had through spurious and unfounded claims, raised alarm in a viral video alleging that troops of Nigerian army were carrying out mass killing of innocent Igbos and dumping them in the river.

According to him, the report also contained some unimaginable and not well couched falsehood targeted at whipping-up negative sentiments against troops and inciting anarchy in the South East region.

“Contrary to the falsehood being spread from the devious propaganda machinery of the desperate and self-serving terrorists’ leader, the army wishes to state that it has conducted a comprehensive investigation on the allegations made by the devious infamous leader and his associates.

“Accordingly,  we wish to  categorically refute these baseless claims by throwing more light on the occurrence.

“In the first  instance, the troops in the video footage are not personnel of the Nigerian Army as the  insignia visible on their berets clearly identifies them as personnel of the Nigerian Navy, who were engaged in a routine test firing of a weapon system mounted on a vehicle.

“In order to ensure safety of other road users and commuters, the troops took precautionary measures by halting vehicular movement along the road, until the test firing was safely concluded.

“Observers were also kept at a safe distance, maintaining transparency and prioritizing the safety of all involved,” he explained.

Nwachukwu said that preliminary findings also indicated that the occurrence took place in the South West region of the country and not the South East as advertently portrayed by the alarmist propagandists.

He added that there was no evidence to support the assertion that individuals were being shot at in the river, nor had there been any report from local communities regarding the discovery of corpses in the area.

“Consequently,  the army wishes to enjoin the public to disregard the unfounded claims and irredeemable falsehood  being propagated by Simon Ekpa and his associates, whose apparent objective is to disseminate misinformation and incite unrest,” he added.

Nwachukwu said the army and indeed,  sister services and other security agencies  remained steadfast in their commitment to maintaining peace and order, ensuring safety and security of all citizens in the country.

According to him, the Nigerian army is vigilant and prepared to counter any attempt to destabilize the southeast region.

“We reaffirm our dedication to protecting the lives and livelihoods of all Nigerians and will continue to work tirelessly to uphold peace and order.

“We encourage the public to seek verified information and not be misled by those who aim to incite violence and disorder.

“We salute the courage and patriotism of well-meaning and law-abiding ndigbo, domiciled in the South East and across the nation.

“Despite the brazen atrocities and threats being perpetrated by Ekpa and his terrorists group, these patriotic Igbos have  continued to build bridges of peace and harmony across the country and promoting our national ideal of a united Nigeria.

“The Nigerian army remains a pillar of stability and security, committed to the well-being of the nation and her people,” he said.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports SGF George Akume had called for an urgent meeting on Monday with the leaders of the organised labor in response to the ongoing nationwide strike ahead of  Tuesday’s meeting called by the Federal Government’s National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission.

Shortly after the meeting commenced, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) raised an alarm that military men had surrounded the venue of the meeting with the federal government over minimum wage negotiations.

“Soldiers are presently surrounding the venue of the meeting between Labour and Government at the premises of the SGF. Any attempt to intimidate, provoke or blackmail our leaders at the negotiation table, would be resisted and strike action would further be prolonged.

“Any attempt to intimidate, provoke or blackmail our leaders at the negotiation table would worsen the issue and further prolong our action indefinitely. Our leaders are acting in accordance with directives of our organs,” NLC posted via its official X (formerly Twitter) account.

However, in a swift response, the defence headquarters said that the soldiers currently surrounding the venue of the ongoing meeting between NLC and the SGF, accompanied the National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, who is also attending the meeting.

“The attention of Army Headquarters has been drawn to a false breaking news by NLC alleging that soldiers currently surround the venue of the ongoing meeting between NLC and the SGF.

“Kindly note that the NSA, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, who is also attending the meeting, arrived at the meeting venue with his retinue of statutorily approved military escorts. Once the meeting is over, the escorts will lead the NSA from the venue.

According to him, Kogi is a state that is well known to be well blessed with mineral deposits and that deposit must work for the state.

The plaza had been shut for over a week following a mob attack on some personnel of the Nigerian army by unidentified hoodlums on May 18.

This is contained in a statement by the Director, Army Public Relations, Maj.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, on Monday in Abuja.

Nwachucku said a high-level meeting was convened in the Office of the National Security Adviser including  the Principal General Staff Officer to the NSA, Commissioner of Police FCT and the FCT Director of the Department of State Services.

Others on the panel, according to him are the Leadership and Management of Banex Plaza, a Representative from the Directorate of Abuja Environmental Protection Board, and the National Chairman of the Mobile Phone Traders Association.

He said the primary objective of the meeting was to identify and apprehend the perpetrators and ensure the continued security of the Federal Capital Territory.

“The following resolutions were agreed upon: Immediate reopening of Banex Plaza to the public and the leadership of Banex Plaza is instructed to lock up Shop C93 with immediate effect.

“The owners of the shop who orchestrated the mob attack on the soldiers are to be arrested and handed over to the Nigerian Police.

Nwachukwu reiterated that acts of violence against military personnel were not only condemnable but also pose a significant threat to national security and public order.

He urged members of the public to exercise caution and restraint when interacting with military personnel and other security operatives, especially when they are in uniform.

According to him, there are established channels for reporting grievances or misconduct by personnel to the appropriate authorities.

“It is imperative that these channels are utilized to maintain order and respect for those who serve and protect our nation.

“The Nigerian army remains committed to ensuring  safety and security of all citizens and will continue to work diligently to prevent such incidents in the future,” he added.

  • Banex plaza closure: Tenants lament, give details of assault on military officers

Banex plaza closure: Tenants lament, give details of assault on military officers

The tenants association of Banex Plaza at Wuse 2 in Abuja has lamented the prolonged closure of the plaza as a result of the fracas that ensued between some military officers and perceived traders last week.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the Vice Chairman of Banex Plaza Wuse 2 Tenants Association, Cornelius Olayemi, to have said the closure of the plaza has cost them over N7 billion in one week.

Recall that on May 18, a video surfaced online showing some youths, believed to be traders beating some soldiers at the shopping centre, over a misunderstanding between a phone seller and a yet-to-be-identified solider.

The situation quickly deteriorated and security personnel have been stationed at the plaza with the place cordoned off, running for more than a week now.

Addressing select journalists in Abuja on Saturday, Olayemi explained that the closure of the premises was also taking a toll on banks and consulting firms, and not just only shop owners.

Olayemi, who was flanked by Chibuike Nzedinma (Chairman), Sunday Nnachita (BoT Chairman), Nkoli Nnachukwu (Treasurer), Emeka Mba (Financial Secretary) and 3 others, appealed to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) administration to resolve the matter amicably and quickly, for them to return to their businesses.

Olayemi, who gave a detailed account of what transpired that the military officers were assaulted, said: “If we are to put a figure to it, I am sure it is up to N7 billion that we have lost.

“Also, in a little headcount, the number of shops is more than 800 in Banex both the old and the new plaza and then if you take a minimum of four probably the owner of the shop of the business and then another three are staff.

“We are talking of almost 5, 000 persons, 5, 000 families affected in FCT. There are five banks in Banex. There are also professionals like chartered accountants having their offices, eye clinics, lawyers and a lot of chambers in Banex not just traders. But people keep feeling that they are only traders in Banex.

“We are very law-abiding, very peaceful. A lot of us are graduates. Then we went into entrepreneurship on our own. We are very peaceful.

“We want to also use this to say publicly say that what happened would have been avoidable if the buyer had come to the union. So we facilitate with those that were handled. But it quite regrettable,” he said.

While speaking on the video, he said: “Please, note that that video in the public domain is an abridged version of the incident that happened.

“To start with, we unequivocally condemn the attack on the soldiers as reprehensible and therefore does not represent the peaceful image of the plaza and its tenants since inception.

“However, various versions of what led to this incident have been put out from various quarters leading to skewed information, therefore it has become pertinent to set the record straight as gathered from investigations and eyewitnesses.”

He said the insistence of the Army for them to produce those who beat up the soldiers was not feasible because “they are not our members and the seller whose shop all these started is known to the army and the police.”

PRESS CONFERENCE BY BANEX PLAZA WUSE 2 TENANTS ASSOCIATION IN RESPECT OF THE ASSAULT OF MILITARY OFFICERS BY MISCREANTS ON THE 18TH OF MAY 2024 AT BANEX PLAZA.

Gentlemen of the press, the  Leadership of Banex plaza wuse 2 Tenant’s Association are pleased to welcome you to this press briefing. We have called for this briefing to avail you with the undiluted and unscrewed story about what happened on 18th of May 2024 before hoodlums hijacked the situation to unleash near fatal attack on soldiers. This incident has been captured in an amateur video which has since gone viral. Please note that that video in the public domain is an abridged version of the incident that happened.

To start with, we unequivocally condemn the attack on the soldiers as reprehensible and therefore does not represent the peaceful image of the plaza and its tenants since inception. Once again, we condemn the unpatriotic incident and deeply regret it’s outxome. However, various versions of what led to this incident have been put out from various quarters leading to skewed information, therefore it has become pertinent to set the record straight as gathered from investigations and eye witnesses.

About five weeks to 18th of May 2024, one Suleiman Ahmed a civilian had gone to shop c93 operated by one Mr kola Suleiman ibrahim within the new banex plaza and purchased a brand new iPhone 15 128gb to which receipt of purchase was issued. Five weeks later, the buyer returned to the seller to complain of faulty phone.

The seller examined the phone and it was revealed that the phone battery was swollen due to over charging. The seller in other to maintain good customer relationship, fixed the phone by replacing the battery with a new one at no cost to the buyer. The iPhone was operating normal and was handed back to the buyer. The buyer however insisted on replacement of the phone after he had used it for  5 weeks. The seller refused to grant that demand and the buyer went away.

On the 18th of May 2024, two individuals walked into the seller’s shop and demanded for iPhone 15 Pro and same was taken off the shelf and given to one. While examining the phone two soldiers with the buyer who earlier complained of faulty phone which the seller had solved came into the shop. The soldiers demanded that the shop owner should refund the money to the complaining buyer who procured their services for replacement of the said iPhone 15 128gb earlier rectified.

The seller refused to grant the demand of the soldiers insisting that no refund or replacement can be made because it was the buyer that damaged the battery of the iPhone by sustained charging yet in his magnanimity, he had replaced the damaged battery for him for free. The soldiers won’t take any explanation other than meeting their demand.

The neighbours sensing degeneration and that this may led to wild altercation alerted the police at the police post attached to the banex plaza. An inspector, Mr Akpah came to the shop and seeing the charged situation, persuaded the soldiers to come with him to the police post along with all parties to resolve the issue peacefully.

But the soldiers would not take that and insisted that refund or replacement must happen there and then. When the police inspector could not persuade them to come for settlement, he technically arrested the shop owner and was leading him out to the police post with hope that this will placate the soldiers to follow him for settlement; but one of the individual (now known to be a soldier) held back the police man and actually struggled to dispossess him of his fire arm. At this point, to save himself, the police man released tear gas and this sent people scampering away and the same with the soldiers who were still with the iPhone 15pro they collected while pretending to be normal customers.

When the seller saw that they were running away with the iPhone 15pro , he ran after them and raised alarm which attracted the attention of everyone including passerbys and trade facilitators who are always present in most markets. These men accosted the soldiers to release the phones thinking they were robbers in disguise as often experienced in Nigeria.

It was still the police whose intervention was earlier scorned by the soldiers with the assistance of traders who rushed out of their shops that saved the soldiers. After the cessation of the avoidable hostilities, the police took all parties to police area command in Maitama from where the matter was further referred to the office of the commissioner of police FCT.  They dealt with it professionally and legally and all parties including the senior officer that represented the army appeared satisfied with the intervention of the police who has primary mandate in civil matters like we have at hand.

While this settlement was on, the army mobilised to the plaza and soldiers descended on anyone at sight around the plaza and took over the entire environment. They escalated by sealing the plaza till date, preventing legitimate businesses from engaging in their lawful ventures in and around the plaza thereby inflicting colossal damage to innocent Nigerians.

Two days later(20th May 2024), a meeting  with the army and our humble selves with the management of the plaza was called by the army. On the day of the meeting, the Brigadier General that addressed us simply gave us a matching order to go and produce all the people identified in the video as having perpetrated this shameful but avoidable brutalization of the soldiers. We were not allowed even a second to state our case and position.

There is no incident before this particular one to suggest that banex plaza is a dangerous zone for uniformed men  who work tireless under very hash economic and environmental circumstances to protect the people and ensure our territorial integrity.

This isolated case does not define us here at banex plaza which houses not just traders but also lawyers chartered accountants banks and other professionals. We call on the military high command to look at this matter dispassionately and in the interest of peace loving occupants of the plaza, please kindly reopen the plaza while investigation continue.

The people they want us to produce are not our members and the seller from whose shop all these started is known to the army and the police. Since the video of assault has captured the perpetrators, the state has the necessary technology to fish them out and it is our sincere hope that it is done so that criminals will be punished to deter others on that route. We promise to continue to work with all authorities to see to the resolution of this matter as we have apprehended a number of them and handed over to the Army.

We appeal to the Federal Government, the FCT minister and administration, the Nigerian Army and the Police,  to consider the plights of innocent businesses and reopen the plaza while investigation continue.  We also urge the general public to always channel complaints through lawful and appropriate channels.

Thank you all and God bless Nigeria.

  • Army opens up over Kano Emirship tussle

Army opens up over Kano Emirship tussle

The Nigerian Army has dismissed as “false”, the claim by the Kano chapter of the Nigerian Bar Association, that soldiers were involved in enforcing a court order restraining that state government from deposing five Emirs.

The Director, Army Public Relations, Maj.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, dismissed the allegation in a statement on Sunday in Abuja.

According to him, contrary to insinuations by the Kano state chapter of NBA, troops of the Nigerian Army have not been involved in the Kano state emirate tussle and are not involved in enforcing any court order.

Nwachukwu said the military had only taken proactive steps to checkmate any possible breakdown or breach of the security that might be occasioned by the tussle.

He said the issue of paramount concern to the army and other security agencies was the prevention of breakdown of law and order in the state which, he added, the adversarial non-state actors could take advantage of.

“The military will imminently intervene when it becomes apparent that the intensity of the security situation becomes overwhelming for the police.

“All the Army is doing at this stage is to monitor the situation as it unfolds and be on standby in the event of any escalation that could threaten the security of the state and the region in general,” he said.

Police warn against violence over Kano Emirship tussle

The Police Command in Kano has alerted the public to possible plans by some groups to incite violence in the state over the lingering Emirship tussle.

Its Commissioner, Usaini Gumel, while briefing newsmen on Sunday in Kano, said that credible intelligence suggests that some individuals plan to stage protests which could potentially lead to violence.

He identified areas of concern to include Iyaka Road, Kofar Naisa, Kofar Nasarawa, Brigade, Airport Road, Janbulo and Sani Mainenge areas in the metropolis.

“The Police, in collaboration with other security agencies, have taken proactive measures to prevent the escalation of tensions and maintain law and order.

“Any attempt to hold processions or gatherings that may trigger violence will be met with swift action, and those responsible will face the full force of the law.

“Residents are advised to remain calm, avoid unlawful gatherings or processions, and report any suspicious activities or individuals to security agents for prompt response.

“Joint security teams have been deployed to strategic locations across the state to ensure peace and order.

“The Police have also embarked on aggressive patrols in and outside the metropolis to deal with any form of security threat.

“The joint security committee has adopted a comprehensive strategy to confront any form of threat in and outside the dissolved five Emirates.

“The security measures will prevent violence and maintain the safety and security of all residents in Kano State,” he said.

He debunked rumours claiming that protesters were already in Kano streets, saying that the falsehood was being circulated by miscreants with bad intentions.

  • Female soldier fired for allegedly stealing ‘N35m gold jewellery’ from Nigerian army General’s wife

Female soldier fired for allegedly stealing ‘N35m gold jewellery’ from Nigerian army General’s wife

A Nigerian female soldier has been dismissed after confessing to stealing gold jewellery said to be worth N35 million from an army general’s wife she was attached to in Kaduna.

Sources in the army identified the female soldier as Lance Corporal Jonah Comfort with service number 15NA/74/4422F.

Comfort reportedly committed the offence earlier in May.

She was said to have entered the senior officer’s room and stolen the jewellery.

The female soldier subsequently sold the jewellery to a jeweller in Kaduna for N5 million.

The army authorities did not want the public to know about the incident as it might lead to a debate as to how the senior officer’s wife acquired jewellery worth millions of Naira despite being a housewife.

The jeweller has also been arrested by the military police.

“The army authorities have been careful over the issue because the general’s wife is a full housewife, so how come she has jewellery worth millions of Naira? The jewellery stolen by the soldier which was valued at N35 million was just part of her collections,” one of the sources said.

“The female soldier had long been monitoring the woman before stealing the jewellery worth N35 million which she later sold to one jeweller for N5 million but unfortunately she was caught.

“Sadly, most of these female soldiers have been turned into slaves by our senior officers’ wives. Now she has been dismissed and put in a cell.”

This comes a few days after the army authorities dismissed three soldiers who were arrested by the police for armed robbery and kidnapping.

The suspects were identified as LCPL Abdul Musa, CPL Innocent Okwoli and CPL West Isaac.

According to military sources, the dismissed soldiers were arrested by policemen during an operation in April.

They were subsequently handed over to the army authorities for further investigation.

Consequently, the soldiers were charged, tried, found guilty and dismissed from service in line with the provisions of the Armed Forces Act Caps A20, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

They were subsequently returned to the police for prosecution.

  • Army breaks silence on closure of Banex plaza in Abuja

Army breaks silence on closure of Banex plaza in Abuja

The Nigerian Army says the closure of the popular Banex Plaza in Wuse Abuja was in response to the unfortunate brutal attack on some Nigerian Army personnel by some hoodlums at the plaza.

Recall that there was an unrest at the plaza on May 18 when some army personnel were attacked by yet to be identified hoodlums, following a disagreement over phone.

The Director, Army Public Relations, Maj.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, in a statement on Tuesday, said the closure followed a meeting convened with the management of Banex Plaza to  identify and apprehend the perpetrators of the heinous act.

Nwachukwu said it was agreed that activities in the plaza be temporarily shut to ensure that the hoodlums who had been using the Banex neighborhood as a sanctuary to pose security threat to the Federal Capital Territory were apprehended.

He said that a swift  intervention by soldiers and policemen on internal security duties salvaged the situation and rescued the attacked personnel from being lynched  by the hoodlums.

According to Nwachukwu, it is important to note that the soldiers attacked were unarmed, did not engage in any form of aggression, and posed no threat to anyone.

“The cruel treatment meted out to them was entirely unwarranted and unjustifiable.

“There Is need for an extensive investigation to be conducted at the scene to determine both the immediate and underlying causes of this mayhem.

“This investigation ultimately aims at ensuring the security of the Federal Capital Territory and to prevent such unwarranted attacks on our personnel and other security operatives, as has been observed in other areas, such as the unfortunate attack in Okuama,” he said.

Nwachukwu said the Nigerian army would also ensure that it diligently investigates the circumstances surrounding the presence of the personnel at the plaza and the attack that ensued.

He said that such acts of violence against personnel were not only condemnable, but could degenerate to a breakdown of law and order, orchestrating threats to national security.

He enjoined members of the public to exercise caution and restraint in dealing with military personnel and other security operatives, especially when they are in uniform.

According to him, there are established channels through which grievances or misconduct by  personnel could be reported to the appropriate authorities.

“It is imperative that these channels are utilised to maintain order and respect for those who serve and protect our nation,” he added.
