Apologise for arresting, shooting teargas at harmless #June12 protesters, Falana tells police

Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mr Femi Falana has asked the Nigeria Police Force to apologise to protesters who were arrested during the June 12 nationwide protest on Saturday.

Falana who is the interim chair of the alliance on surviving COVID-19 and beyond accused the police of violating the fundamental right of expression of the protesters.

“The police should learn to respect the constitutional rights of protesters. It’s uncivilised for the police to be chasing and attacking unarmed protesters on the streets as if these citizens are criminals,” Falana noted in a communique on Sunday.

He however commended the protesters for conducting themselves in a mature and peaceful manner.

Falana also condemned the explanation of the police that the tear gas shot was to prevent hoodlums and miscreants from hijacking the peaceful rallies adding that there are lessons to take from that incident which he describes as unfortunate.

The rights activist urged future protesters to inform the police ahead of their action as demanded by law.

Meanwhile the Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba says no protester was arrested on June 12.

The police spokesman justified the use of tear gas on protesters who took to the streets to mark Democracy Day by voicing their grievances against the government of the day.

According to Mr Mba, the actions of officers were in line with international best practices of dispersing violent protests.

#Twitterban: 48hours after, PDP Reps Caucus still walk freely, waiting for Buhari, Malami to effect arrests

… nobody has summoned us – Reps
…as Buhari keep mum over Twitter ban

    By Emman Ovuakporie

48 hours after Peoples Democratic Party, PDP House of Representatives Caucus declared that they will continue to tweet and they should be arrested not their constituents, President Muhamnadu Buhari and Minister of Justice and Attorney General to the Federation, Abubakar Malami are yet to issue a warrant of arrest.

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) recalls that last Tuesday at about 1.27pm members of the PDP caucus after staging a quiet walkout from plenary addressed a press conference declaring that they will continue to tweet and that their constituents which they represent should not be arrested.

Arrowhead of the caucus, Rep Kingsley Chinda, in his brief had insisted that”do not touch our constituents rather arrest our constituents because you can’t arrest them for an offence they never committed.

“If you must arrest anybody arrest us because we will continue to tweet but touch not our constituents.

The lawmakers without any further delay opened Tweeter accounts to make good their threats that they will continue to tweet.

But on Thursday, during an interview with Arise tv, Buhari cleverly avoided the question on Twitter ban when he was asked to react to it.

TNG in separate interviews with two top ranking members of the PDP caucus declared that “as you can see we are patiently waiting for them to arrest us but we have not received any notice.

A ranking lawmaker from the North Central simply told TNG, “yes we stand by our position do not arrest our constituents, if you touch just one of them you touch us all.

” We are patiently waiting for them to arrest us and we will prove our 100 percent loyalty to our constituents, they brought us here to right the wrongs not to support pronouncements made without any legal backing.

Another rep from the south south geo-political zone spoke in a similar vein declaring that”well we have made our position clear on no account should any of our constituents be arrested for tweeting and that aside it’s a mere pronouncement without the force of law.

” We are patiently waiting to hear from them on their next line of action or pronouncement.

Arrest threats: Wabba dares El-Rufai, leads day three of NLC protests

The National Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Ayuba Wabba on Wednesday led the third-day protest in Kaduna State.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that the protest started on Monday following the disengagement of over seven thousand civil servants at the state and local governments by the Kaduna State government.

The strike has paralysed critical sectors of the economy in the state and the state governor Nasir El-Rufai in reaction declared the NLC Chairman and other leaders wanted for economic sabotage and attacks on public infrastructure in Kaduna State under the Miscellaneous Offences Act.

However, despite the arrest threats, workers again gathered on Wednesday morning at the state NLC secretariat amidst heavy security chanting songs of solidarity.

The protest was done amid heavy security due to an earlier attack on the workers by armed thugs who hurled stones at them and injured many.

The NLC President insists that the protest must go on despite the attack on the workers by the thugs.

According to him, the protest is backed by the constitution which guarantees the workers the right to freedom of expression and movement.

The NLC Chairman earlier on Tuesday accused the state governor El-Rufai of sponsoring thugs to disrupt the protest.

Wabba said he informed the DSS after he received earlier information of the plan to disrupt the protest.

“Today is a very sad moment in the history of democracy in Nigeria. Early in the morning today, we got credible information that El-Rufai has hired one Alhaji Hassan and some thugs to come and attack us.

“While we are here, they came but thank God we have chased them away because we have the number. We are not thugs And We Are Not Using Thugs we are Nigerian workers,” Wabba said.

Demand proper ID from our officers before arrest, EFCC tells Nigerians

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has asked Nigerians to be vigilant and demand proper identification from officers when confronted with the possibility of arrest.

Addressing reporters on Thursday, the Zonal Head of the Lagos EFCC Office, Ghali Ahmed, advised Nigerians to always report any suspicious operation to the nearest office of the anti-graft agency.

We need to be wary of the antics of this gang of impostors and to report any suspicious “operations” to the nearest EFCC office,” he said.

The zonal head added, “Above all, we enjoin members of the public confronted with the possibility of arrest, to demand proper identification from arresting officers.

“They can also demand arrest warrant, as the commission does not embark on any operation without a warrant. The operations of the commission are usually in line with international best practices.”

He explained that the advice became necessary after EFCC operatives arrested two suspects and a Mobile Police inspector for impersonating officials of the commission and extorting members of the public in Lagos.

The suspects – Pascal Chijioke and Sodiq Adekunle, as well as the policeman – Edwin Bassey – were arrested at the New Horizon Estate in the Lekki area of the state during an illegal operation to serve a purported court order on an unsuspecting victim.

“They however ran out of luck as the commission, acting on a tip-off, swooped on them.

“Items recovered from them include the fake EFCC ID cards, the jackets, the purported court order touted to have emanated from Mushin Magistrate Court, a truckload of household properties belonging to the unsuspecting victim.

“The suspects have made useful statements and will soon be arraigned in court,” said Ahmed.

According to him, the EFCC has recorded some progress in the course of its operations and the most significant of them is the recent action that led to the arrest of the alleged impostors and police inspector.

Many of them alleged the fiery preacher, who recently in a viral video called for the resignation or impeachment of President Muhammadu Buhari over worsening insecurity, was either picked up by security operatives or gunmen.

But DSS spokesman, Dr Peter Afunanya in a swift reaction said the cleric was not in its custody.

Mbaka was last seen on Tuesday, according to the President-General of the OYC, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, who added that any attempt to locate him had failed.

“We have it on good authority that his aides have neither seen nor heard from him since Tuesday.

“Calls put to his mobile line have also remained unanswered; this has now prompted us to issue this alarm as we would not take it lightly should anything untoward happen to him.

“We are giving the Federal Government 48 hours to produce the priest, else they should be ready to face Igbo youths. They were dining and wining with him all along and now that he told the truth, they are no longer comfortable with him.

“Let nothing happen to Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka. It will not be in anybody’s interest,” the group warned.

‘EFCC not a slaughter house’, Okorocha speaks on arrest

Immediate past governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha on Tuesday confirmed his invitation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

This is according to his media aide, Sam Onwuemeodo, who stated this in a press statement issued on Tuesday.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that the anti-graft agency had quizzed the lawmaker representing Imo West Senatorial District weeks after operatives of the Imo State Police Command arrested him in February for allegedly unsealing Spring Palm Estate linked to his wife, Nkechi.

The Imo State Government sealed the estate and other properties it claimed to have been diverted by Okorocha and his family members but the Senator has since said the properties were legitimately his own and that of his family.

But Okorocha’s spokesman said the anti-graft agency has been investigating petitions written against him by the state government since he left office in 2019.

“The truth is that Okorocha left as the governor of Imo State on May 28, 2019. And shortly after his exit as governor, Imo State Government wrote Petitions upon Petitions against him,” the statement partly read.

“The EFCC investigated the petitions and has been in various Courts of the land with Okorocha, to that effect.

“And if the EFCC has decided to invite Okorocha for Clarifications on the matters already in Courts, especially with a new Chairman at the helm of affairs at the Commission, there is nothing wrong with that.

“The matters between EFCC and Okorocha over his governorship in Imo, have been pendent in various Courts of the land.

“At the end of the day, we would know whether the Commission will be withdrawing the Cases in Courts, or would Continue with the Cases already in Courts.

“But to us, the Commission is doing its job and should be given the needed cooperation. And Okorocha being a law-abiding Citizen, would always cooperate with the Commission over the Matters in Courts. EFCC is not a slaughter house, but a very responsible institution and should be seen as such.

“We have no reason to complain about the invitation of today, which Okorocha honoured as patriotic and responsible Nigerian. Like we stated earlier, the Commission didn’t invite Okorocha today, for the first time.”
