  • Okocha faces fresh troubles as Lagos Court orders his arrest

A Lagos Division of the Lagos State High Court in Igbosere has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of former Super Eagles star, Austin Okocha, over tax evasion charges.

Jay Jay Okocha as he is popularly known – has repeatedly failed to appear before the court to answer why he allegedly failed to pay his income taxes.

Adedayo Akintoye, the judge, issued the warrant for the arrest of the former Eagles captain on January 29 and thereafter adjourned until February 19.

However, on February 19, the prosecution had not effected the arrest forcing the judge to, again, adjourn till April 15 and ordering that the warrant be executed by then.

The football star is facing a three-count charge instituted by the Lagos State Ministry of Justice bordering on failure to furnish his income returns and nonpayment of tax.

The state filed the charges through its prosecutor, Jide Martins, in June 2017 and the suit began four months later.

The defendant, however, had failed to appear in court.

After several adjournments without Okocha appearing despite having been served the court papers, Mr Martins prayed the court to issue a bench warrant for his arrest.

According to the prosecutor, Okocha had failed to furnish his income returns for tax purposes to the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service.

Martins also said that the defendant had failed to pay his income taxes.

He said the offences contravened Sections 56 (a) and (b) of the Lagos State Revenue Administration Law No. 8, 2006 and Section 94 (1) of the Personal Income Tax Act Cap P8, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.

  • DSS planning to arrest me – CUPP spokesman

The first national spokesperson, Coalition of United Political Parties, Imo Ugochinyere, on Thursday raised the alarm over an alleged plan by men of the Department of State Services to arrest him.

Ugochinyere raised the alarm at a press conference in Abuja.

He said the plan was to arrest him and keep him away until after elections.

He said his problem was because he was in possession of copies of asset declaration forms of some top government officials, including that of the Minister of State, Petroleum Resources, Ibe Kachikwu.

He said he had earlier been approached on the need for him to reduce his opposition to the government.

Ugochinyere said, “It is important that the world take note of this. Just about two hours ago, I was informed the DSS had perfected arrangements to arrest me any moment from now.

It is important that I tell the world the reason behind this move. I have been approached by people in government to reduce the level of my opposition to government , but I cannot betray the trust of the people.

The problem is that they are aware that the opposition parties are in possession of asset declaration forms of key members of the administration, especially that of the Minister of State, Petroleum, Ibe Kachikwu.

What they want to do is to stop me from releasing those documents.”

Ugochinyere claimed that a review of the forms showed that the affected ministers did not make full disclosure in their assets.

He claimed that the government did not want such documents published because that was the same reason cited to suspend the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen.

  • Presidency speaks on alleged plans to arrest CJN Onnoghen

The Presidency has denied any plans to arrest the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen, and other Justices of the Supreme Court, according to a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina.

This false story is being peddled by the Coalition of United Political Parties apparently to set the judiciary against the executive and cause major confusion ahead of the forthcoming general elections.

The story is absolutely false as the Presidency is not in any way involved in plotting against or framing anybody.

We note that the findings of the Code of Conduct Bureau against the Chief Justice of Nigeria, and the allegations arising from them, are being handled by the courts in the normal way, as is expected in a democratic society like ours.

The Presidency has not, and will certainly not, interfere in the process.

We, however, want to draw the attention of the general public to this or similar false stories, which are ill motivated to further the political interests of their sponsors.

While the Buhari administration is very firmly committed to the fight against corruption, we want to assure the general public that Government will always pursue its mission with the highest standards of fairness, and in strict conformity with the relevant laws”, the Presidency said.

  • Why EFCC can’t arrest Diezani despite court order – Magu

The acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr. Ibrahim Magu, on Wednesday explained why the commission was finding it difficult to arrest a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke.

According to the EFCC boss, Diezani is being protected by foreign law enforcement agencies from arrest and trial in Nigeria.

Magu said this during a media chat in Abuja on Wednesday.

The EFCC boss was reacting to a question on whether the EFCC would arrest Diezani as ordered by a Federal Capital Territory High Court in Apo.

He said, “I need less than 72 hours to produce Diezani but how can I get her? She is being protected by other law enforcement agencies outside this country. This is our predicament. If she were here, I would have arrested her.”

When asked to clarify his statement, he said, “The barrier is that other law enforcement agencies are involved in the matter. You know she is in the UK and we are making preparations to get her. We have already gone to court and this was part of the process of extradition; that is the court should declare that a warrant of arrest be issued against her and that we produce her within 72 hours.”

Magu said had Diezani been in Nigeria, he would have arrested the former oil minister in less than an hour.

The EFCC boss said all law enforcement agencies in the world had been informed of Diezani’s status as a person of interest in Nigeria.

Even when the Italians visited us recently, they were asking questions about her,” he said.

Magu said about 60 per cent of looted funds were still in Nigeria, adding that the commission could only succeed through the cooperation of Nigerians.

He further stated that about 80 per cent of stolen Nigerian wealth was still hanging.

The EFCC boss added, “More than 80 per cent of the loot outside the country is still hanging. Ask them why it is so difficult to repatriate these funds when it has been established that this money came from Nigeria and you know that this person does not own this money.

There is no justification. It is not a small amount of money. We have over $300m hanging in the Jersey Island, a UK foreign territory.”

Magu said the EFCC would work closely with the Independent National Electoral Commission to ensure that taxpayers’ money is not used for elections.

Police arrest man in possession of human eyeball in Niger

The Niger State Police Command has arrested Shuaibu Ibrahim,35, of Safiu village in Toto Local Government Area of Nasarawa State with a human eyeball.

According to the police report, operatives attached to the Gawu Babangida Division in Gurara Local Government Area arrested Ibrahim.

It was learnt that the police operatives apprehended the suspect in the early hours of Thursday following a tip-off from a member of the public.

The eyeball was said to have been removed from a victim of a communal clash between the Igbira and Bassa people in Nasarawa State.

According to a report by The Punch, one Ojo, now at large, reportedly gave the eyeball to the suspect to sell in Niger State for N250,000.

Further checks revealed that the suspect had been involved in the illegal trafficking of human parts across the northern states for over five years.

The suspect explained that he was the intermediary between Ojo and his customers, who were buyers of human parts.

Ibrahim said, “My duty is to deliver human parts given to me by Ojo to his clients across the northern states. We make quick money in this business but I cannot tell what the buyers are using the parts for.

A lot of people are interested in buying human parts but I don’t know what they use them for. My duty is to deliver as and when due to our clients and collect the money.

I don’t even ask clients what they are using the human eyeballs for, but I guess it must be something serious.”

The Niger State Police Public Relations Officer, Muhammad Abubakar, who confirmed the arrest of the Nasarawa State indigene, said police operatives arrested the suspect after receiving credible information from a member of the public.

He said the suspect would be charged to court after the completion of police investigation.
