  • Court orders arrest of former Enugu gov, Nnamani, aide over alleged N5.3bn fraud

The Federal High Court in Lagos on Monday issued a bench warrant against a former governor of Enugu State, Chimaroke Nnamani, and his ex-aide, Sunday Anyaogu over an alleged fraud of N5.3bn.

Justice Chuka Obiozor issued bench warrant against the ex-governor and Anyaogu for failing to appear in court on Monday for their scheduled re-arraignment.

The judge rejected the explanation by Nnamani’s lawyer, Mr. Abubakar Shamsudeen, from the chambers of Mr. Rickey Tarfa (SAN), that his client was at the moment bedridden in a hospital in the United States, where he was recuperating after a heart surgery.

He declined the lawyer’s request for an adjournment till January next year, expressing displeasure that the case had lasted for 10 years and the judiciary has always been blamed for the delay in such cases.

Justice Obiozor held, “This matter was slated for re-arraignment today, and I have not found any justification for the absence of the accused before this court to take their pleas.

“There must be an end to litigation; the charge before me was filled in 2007 and it is now 10 years.

“In the peculiar circumstances of this case, and particularly in the absence of any convincing explanation on the absence of the defendants before this court today, it is hereby ordered that a bench warrant be issued against the first and second defendants as well as a summons for the sureties to show cause

“Consequently, this case is adjourned until December 14 for further proceedings.”

When the case was called for hearing on Monday, the counsel for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr. Kelvin Uzozie, had noted that the matter was scheduled for the re-arraignment of Nnamani and Anyaogu but they were absent.

He then applied that the judge should issue a bench warrant against them.

“I humbly apply that bench warrant be issued against the first and second defendants and their sureties,” Uzozie said.

But Shamsudeen urged the judge to decline the application for bench warrant, saying his office had been unable to reach Nnamani in the US or his family since last Thursday that the matter came up afresh in court.

“I was reliably informed that the defendant had a heart surgery last month and we wanted to get a medical report but unfortunately we could not,” Shamsudeen added.

He said the defendants’ absence in court was not deliberate, saying they had regularly attended their trial before Justice Mohammed Yunusa, who was handling the case earlier.

  • Air Peace arrested me, two others for raising safety concerns – Akinfolarin

Oluwaseun Akinfolarin, one of the three passengers aboard an Air Peace 6:30 p.m. flight to Abuja from Lagos on Monday who were arrested and charged to court for alleged unruly behaviour and for obstructing the operations of the airline said he was being persecuted for pointing out they had seat on their emergency exit aisle.

Akinfolarin who wrote about the incident on his Twitter page, said he was arrested just because he called one of the hostesses on the flight during the routine safety drill and requested to know why the airline had seats blocking the aeroplane’s emergency exits.

He said his observation sparked a tense debate between some of the passengers and the airline’s staffers which eventually got him [Akinfolarin] and two others to be forced down by security agents, arrested and taken to a police station in the Ikeja area of Lagos.

They were later granted bail and told to report to the station yesterday.

Meanwhile, The airline’s Corporate Communications Manager, Mr Chris Iwarah, yesterday, in Lagos, said security personnel from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, had to be invited to restore order in a statement he released to newsmen.

He said: “We wish to confirm and set the records straight regarding the unruly and disruptive conduct of three passengers (two men and a lady) on our 6:30 Lagos-Abuja service on Sept. 11. AirPeace “During the pre-departure safety briefing by our crew, the three passengers began to query the seating arrangement of the aircraft.

“Efforts by our crew to let the passengers understand that the seating arrangement was as approved by both the FAAN and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, were rebuffed.” According to him, the pilot-in-command of the flight was later briefed by the crew to intervene but the passengers refused to cooperate with the captain.

Iwarah said they insisted on bringing the airline’s engineers on board to confirm the airworthiness of the aircraft. He said: ”The passengers insisted that the aircraft was unsafe and would suffer the fate of one other domestic airline which had one of its aircraft crashed some years ago.

“The unruly passengers prevented our crew from continuing with the safety briefing. “Understandably, other passengers on board the flight became apprehensive and insisted that unruly passengers should be taken off the flight.” “The pilot-in-command, therefore, had no choice than to request the unruly passengers to disembark.

The passengers, however, refused to comply, leading to the captain of the flight calling for the intervention of FAAN security personnel.” “The passengers also refused to refrain from their disruptive conduct upon the intervention of FAAN security personnel.”

Iwarah said after about three hours delay, two of the disruptive passengers eventually agreed to disembark, while the lady among them was adamant.

  • Police arrest man for allegedly murdering his new wife

Stephen Akpata, a Nigerian who used to live in Australia, has been arrested by the police for allegedly strangling his new wife, Onyinye Eze, Bayelsa Commissioner of Police, Asuquo Amba, has said.

According to a report by the News Agency of Nigeria, the 33-year-old victim was an employee of Globacom Nigeria Limited.

The Delta State born Mr. Akpata, popularly called Bishop, who claimed in a statement that he was 40 years old, allegedly on August 16, 2017 killed the woman in her Yenagoa residence.

Police doubted Mr. Akpata’s age as he also claimed that he had spent 27 years in Australia, meaning that he went there when he was 13 years-old.

The Police Commissioner said Mr. Akpata murdered his wife by strangling her with the cable of an electric iron. He then also stabbed her with a knife.

The police chief said the incident became known when one of Onyinye’s colleagues, Moses Awo, reported at Ekeki Police Division in Yenagoa that Onyinye did not report for work as expected.

According to Mr. Amba, Mr. Awo had reportedly told the police that when he and another colleague went to Onyinye’s residence in Kpansia area of Yenagoa, they discovered that the apartment was locked. They also found that the television set in her room was working.

Some police officers from Ekeki Police Division in Yenagoa went to the deceased’s apartment and forced her door open. They found Onyinye dead in a pool of her blood.

According to Bayelsa Police Commissioner, Mr. Akpata was the prime suspect in the murder.
He was arrested by police in Badagry, Lagos State, after about two weeks on his trail.

Parading the suspect on Thursday at the state command’s headquarters, Mr. Amba said that his operatives discovered that the deceased room was scattered.

Mr. Amba said the exhibits recovered at the scene of crime were a knicker; a pair of canvas shoes, one damaged electric iron, one jean jacket, one pen knife, one pink singlet, a Nokia mobile phone and a damaged wristwatch.

He said the exhibits were stained with blood.

The police chief said the body of the victim was removed and deposited at the morgue of the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, for autopsy.

Narrating how the suspect was arrested, Mr. Amba said that discreet investigations revealed that the suspect absconded to Ghana after allegedly committing the murder in Yenagoa.

The commissioner, who said the suspect returned to Badagry, Lagos a few days after, added that Mr. Akpata was tracked and arrested in Badagry on September 1 and brought to Bayelsa the same day.

When our operatives went into the apartment of the deceased, we meticulously searched the environment and we saw a three-quarter knicker that was well hidden, tucked somewhere in the room that one would not suspect that something was hidden there.

We discovered there was a blood stain on the knicker. By this time, we tried to find out who was with the lady because we knew that they had just contracted a registry marriage.

We got in touch with Akpata who is the purported husband. He gave us the impression that he was out of town, implying that he travelled out of town before the incident.

So, we were still communicating with him, at least to break the news to him that his purported wife was dead. He told us he was on his way back and this took us some days.

As we were communicating with him, he was just giving us the impression that he was coming back, not knowing that he was plotting his own escape.

We found out that prior to that time of her murder, the suspect had spent so much money on the lady and they were moving from one hotel to another.

Still, we were playing along with him to enable him to come to us. But since he said he was in Lagos, we suspected that Ghana or Republic of Benin would be a likely point of escape.

We got in touch with the embassies there and the Ghanaian Embassy was on the alert. From our radar, we found out that he slept in Ghana.

He escaped back to Badagry in Lagos. He did not know we were still following him up. We got in touch with the police in Badagry. Eventually he was arrested at the Badagry border. So, we brought him back.” Mr. Amba said.

Mr. Amba added that the police command got vital information on him, particularly on his Facebook page where they saw many pictures of him with his murdered wife during their court marriage.

He assured that the suspect would be charged to court while the case would be diligently prosecuted as soon as investigations were concluded.

  • Rwanda police arrest Kagame’s fiery critic, Diane Rwigara

Rwandan police on Monday arrested Diane Shima Rwigara, a leading critic of President Paul Kagame, charging her with forgery and tax evasion.

Her mother and sister were also arrested on the tax charges.

Earlier this year, electoral authorities barred Rwigara from standing in August’s presidential vote, which Kagame won, saying she had not submitted enough supporters’ signatures and some of the names she did sent in belonged to dead people.

    Rwigara denied the allegations.

“They are accused of tax evasion and secondly Diane Rwigara is accused of using fake documents while she was gathering signatures for (her) presidential candidacy,” police spokesman Theos Badege told reporters on Monday.

Police said they had a warrant issued by a prosecutor to arrest them.

Rwigara, a 35-year-old accountant, has repeatedly accused Kagame of stifling dissent and criticised his Rwandan Patriotic Front’s near total hold on power. Kagame won last month’s election with 98.8 percent of the vote.

Kagame won international praise for presiding over a peaceful and rapid economic recovery in Rwanda since the 1994 genocide, when an estimated 800,000 people Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed.

But he has also faced increased criticism for what human rights groups say are widespread abuses, a muzzling of independent media, and suppression of political opposition.

Rwigara claimed that she was being held under house arrest before Monday’s police action.

“Tell us why we are being arrested? Why should we go to the police while you have confined us to this place and took away all our money without leaving us any?” Rwigara said as she and her family were being taken away.

Asked about this, Badege, the police spokesman, said that earlier police had only searched Rwigara’s home and taken a few items and money away in line with the law.

It was a clear application of the law,” Badege said.

  • Igbo quit notice: Why we are yet to arrest Arewa youths – FG

The Federal Government has explained why it has not arrested the leaderships of the Coalition of Northern Youths who recently issued quit notices to Igbos living in the North.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the youths (under the aegis of Arewa) on June 6 issued strong worded warnings to Igbos leaving in the region to leave before October 1 (Independence Day) or face attacks.

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN) at a news conference in Abuja on Tuesday said government did not go after sponsors of the quit notice due to the “security implications”, adding that the Federal Government was being strategic in handling the issue.

In his words: “The way the government works is that a lot of considerations naturally come into play. One is investigation, which is not time-bound; two, security consideration; three, expeditious determination and consideration of public interest.

But one thing that is certain is that the government is ever alive to its responsibilities and whoever is found wanting, regardless of the length of time, will definitely be brought to book.

That is the way it works. I assure you that the government will, within the context of its responsibilities, work to ensure good governance, justice, peace and fairness in the nation.”

TheNewsGuru.com reports that after several interventions from leaders across board, the Arewa Youths last week withdrew the quit notice

Their spokesman, AbdulAziz Suleiman, said the withdrawal was as a result of consultations and pressure from various groups.

Meanwhile, the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has warned the Federal Government against re-arresting its leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

The spokesman of group, Emma Powerful who said doing so will have dire consequences.

The IPOB spokesman was reacting to what it called an attack on the Ohanaeze. Some ACF elders had berated the Ohanaeze leaders for trivialising a criminal matter.

According to Powerful, Kanu has not committed any crime that could warrant his rearrest.

He said: “If Nigeria ever had a case against our leader, why have the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) not commenced the trial since October 2015 when our leader was first arrested?

Instead, the Arewa North thought they could intimidate this present Ohaneze Ndigbo as they did to previous executives, into allowing Nnamdi Kanu to be arrested.

The idea of wanting to use baseless trumped up charges to justify the extra-judicial detention of Kanu will be resisted by all men and women of good conscience.”

  • Nnamdi Kanu dares Buhari, says ‘come arrest me in Biafra land’

…Insists on boycotting Anambra and 2019 general elections

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu has said anyone who makes attempt to arrest him again in ‘Biafra land will be crushed to pieces.’

TheNewsGuru.com reports that Kanu was reacting to recent moves by the Federal Government to effect his rearrest after he was granted conditional bail n April.

Kanu stated this on Sunday at Boys Technical College (BTC) located along Faulks road in Aba North Local Government of Abia State where members of IPOB Faulks road Zone I and over 20, 000 supporters of the group received him.

The IPOB leader who described Aba as the “Spiritual Land of Biafra”, said that he was not going to go on exile, urging his supporters and those who believed in the Biafra course to be strong and resolute.

He also used the opportunity to reiterate that there won’t be election in Anambra in November or any part of “Biafra Land” even in 2019 unless there was a date for referendum which the group has been clamouring for.

Kanu who paid tribute to those reportedly killed at National High School Aba by security agencies in his words said “Here we are, is Biafra Land. Aba is the spiritual capital of Biafra land. We started in Aba in 2015 at CKC (Christ the King Catholic Cathedral). That day, heaven authenticated our move that IPOB will restore Biafra and that’s what we’ve come to do. We died in Aba; At National High School.

They shot and killed us in other places in Biafra land when they were protesting for my release. As our people rest in the grave, we’ll never rest until Biafra is restored. I don’t care what they say in Abuja. I don’t give a damn what they say in Lagos.

I’m a Biafran and we are going to crumble the zoo. Some idiots who are not educated said that they’ll arrest me, and I ask them to come. I’m in Biafra land. If any of them leaves Biafra land alive know that this is not IPOB. Tell them that’s what I said.

Tell Buhari that I’m in Aba and any person who comes to arrest Nnamdi Kanu in Biafra land will die here. I’ll never go on exile I assure you.

Some people talk about restructuring, are we doing restructuring of Nigeria now? Are we doing fiscal federalism? Are we doing devolution? What we want is Biafra!

Forget all the nonsense they write about us. We are not slowing down and no man born of a woman can stop us. They thought we are joking and God gave us a simple message that no one can stop us. The movement to restore Biafra is unstoppable.

God sent me to you, Aba people and I am giving you His message. Our veterans here, your own message is that you’ll see Biafra alive not in death.

The message of heaven is what I bring to you. Don’t be afraid. The plans of our enemies are not going to be actualized. The enemies are planning, but we are formidable.

We are going to boycott Anambra State election. After Anambra 2017, in 2019, there’ll be no elections in Biafra land. Signed and sealed. My message is that there ‘ll not be election in Biafra land ever again until they give us date for referendum.”

Some of IPOB members who spoke to reporters at the venue said that they defied going to church to come and listen to their leader and a man that God has destined to use to liberate the people of the southeast and old eastern region from the hands of corrupt and insensitive leaders who have over the years decided to impoverish than make life meaningful for their subjects.

They however vowed to join hands with Kanu to ensure that Biafra was realized no matter how long it would take.

  • Corruption: Arrest lawmakers ignoring your invitation, Sagay tells EFCC, Magu

Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC), Prof. Itse Sagay has asked the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to arrest any lawmaker that refused to honour its invitation.

He insisted that the National Assembly must recognise EFCC as an institution and that no law says an arrest warrant must be sent to it before a lawmaker can appear before the EFCC.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the EFCC had on June 20 invited the Senator representing Anambra North Senatorial District, Senator Stella Oduah but she refused to honour the invitation.

She was invited over petitions in connection to the purchase of two armoured BMW vehicles at N255m by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, during her tenure as Aviation Minister.

Sagay in reaction said, “The EFCC is an institution; so, recognising Magu or not is totally irrelevant and until the Supreme Court says Magu is no longer chairman or acting chairman.

The Senate cannot refuse to recognise Magu or the EFCC as an institution.

If the EFCC invites you, you must go. There is no law that says invitation letters must come through the leadership of the National Assembly.

The EFCC can inform the leadership as a matter of courtesy but letters should go directly to the person being invited.

The danger now is that if they keep insisting on this, the EFCC will arrest her”.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the National Assembly leadership had earlier told members to ignore invitations from the anti-graft agency.

  • Biafra: Order arrest of Nnamdi Kanu now, Northern group tells Osinbajo

Biafra: Order arrest of Nnamdi Kanu now, Northern group tells Osinbajo

The Arewa Youth Assembly, AYA, a northern group, has called on Acting President Yemi Osinbajo to order the arrest of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB.

The group said Kanu has been violating his bail conditions and this could affect the peaceful coexistence of Nigeria.

TheNewsGuru.com recalls that Justice Binta Nyako had given stringent conditions that the embattled leader must abide by before and after leaving the prison premises. She particularly barred him (Kanu) from granting interviews, and being in gatherings of more than 10 persons, when she granted the IPOB leader bail.

In a statement signed on Friday by its speaker, Mohammed Salihu and clerk, Desmond Minakaro, the group gave Mr. Osinbajo 10 days to order the arrest of the IPOB leader.

The group threatened to shut down federal government activities in the Federal Capital Territory if the acting president fails to meet its demands.

The leadership of Arewa Youth Assembly has observed with keen interest the high level of lawlessness in the country and the silence of government on issues that are capable of disintegrating the country.

The level of insecurity and youth agitations call for concern by all well-meaning Nigerians. These threats have turned our country into a place of uncertainty and now a laughing stock within the international communities. Nigerians now live in a state of fear and trauma,” the group noted.

The group said the government’s silence on Kanu’s activities was no longer golden.

The most surprising and amazing of these is that the federal government is watching while Nnamdi Kanu is creating a state within a state, threatening to stop Anambra state gubernatorial election, holding rallies in South-South and South-East and using provocative and inciting words, granting interviews to the press, which pose a threat to national unity and security.” the statement added.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that Kanu during a rally in Enugu on Monday said he cannot be re-arrested because he has not flouted the bail conditions guiding his release from prison.

Kanu noted that if anyone was not respecting court pronouncements, it was President Muhammadu Buhari and the Director General of the Department of State Services, Lawal Daura.

  • Arrest, prosecute killer herdsmen wrecking havoc across Nigeria, PFN urges FG

Arrest, prosecute killer herdsmen wrecking havoc across Nigeria, PFN urges FG

    …says

There should be no “sacred cows or sacrificial lambs’’ in the fight against corruption

Arabic and French shouldn’t be the only languages of study in tertiary institutions

CRK be reinstated as an independent subject at all levels

FG should dialogue with IPOB and other agitating groups

    Nigerians are hungry

The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, PFN, on Thursday urged the federal government to ensure there are no sacred cows in its fight against corruption in the country.

Felix Omobude, the National President of PFN, spoke at the end of its 2nd quarter National Executive Council meeting held in Lagos at the Bishops Court, its National Headquarters

The body, while commending the government for fighting corruption, urged it to be fair to all and to pursue the cause within the ambit of the laws of the land.

Mr. Omobude said there should be no “sacred cows or sacrificial lambs’’ in the fight.

He said the PFN was glad that some economic measures to revive the economy had been put in place.

However, the PFN is still concerned about the hardship the ordinary Nigerian is facing.

We are aware of the Social Intervention programmes, but we call for a more concerted on the part of Federal Government to mitigate the pains and generate more employment opportunities, especially for the youth.

We commend the efforts put into shoring up the naira in recent times, but we push for more concerted efforts in this regard.

The government’s drive to promote patronage of locally produced goods is a commendable one.

We urge Nigerians to fully embrace this initiative and consume what we produce locally,” Mr. Omobude said.

He commended the government’s effort in tackling the insurgency in the country, urging it not to relent in its efforts at ensuring the release of the remaining Chibok girls.

PFN calls for more attention to be paid to the plight of the victims of the Southern Kaduna crisis.

PFN is worried at developments in Southern Kaduna, especially the lack of prompt response to guarantee the security of lives and property there, leading to a loss of lives of many indigenes of that area.

A delegation from the PFN recently paid a visitation to Southern Kaduna and made a presentation of N15 million worth of relief materials to the different groups, irrespective of ethnicity or religion.

From this visit, we can see that there is much more that urgently needs to be done for the people of Southern Kaduna and urgently too.

We call on the Federal government and Kaduna State Government to immediately improve on their rehabilitation efforts,” he said.

The PFN leader also urged the government to ensure that Christian Religious Studies stands on its own as a separate subject as it has always been.

The PFN is concerned at the controversy that has attended the revised Basic Education Curriculum, especially the collapse of Christian Religious Studies as part of an omnibus subject known as Religion and National Values.

We noted the explanation by the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) on some of the issues raised.

There is really no justification for the uncertainty the NERDC has created which has opened up the implementation of the curriculum to the whims and caprices.

Collapsing CRK as only a part of Religion and National Values forecloses the opportunity of the subject being studied at the tertiary level by students and is unacceptable,’’ he said.

Speaking on the compulsory study of foreign languages, the PFN appealed that windows be opened up to more languages beyond French and Arabic, to accommodate other languages.

Windows of other languages should be open so our children can enjoy greater flexibility in foreign language study and not be compelled to study a language they have no interest in,’’ he said.

He said that the PFN condemned the wanton killings by herdsmen, urging the Federal Government to take the issue of security more seriously, especially the spate of kidnappings all over the country.

We call for adequate and appropriate response of government to put an end to the activities of these killer herdsmen across the country,” he said.

Mr. Omobude urged government of states where cattle rearing is a part and parcel of their culture to build ranches and develop reserves where cattle owners can husband their animals.

State governments should build ranches, so that cattle can be kept there without travelling long distances where they stray into farms, destroy crops and constitute nuisance and threat to other communities,’’ he said.

The group urged government at all levels to do all they could to assuage the fears and concerns of everyone and ensure the practice of Federalism in its true form.

The PFN notes with concern the restiveness in different parts of the country and the increasing calls for a breakup of the country on the part of those purporting to speak for ethnic groups.

We restate our belief in the unity of Nigeria and a commitment to one Nigeria where people of different faiths and tongues can continue to live together as one.

We urge the government to pay attention to the calls for restructuring and find a way to push for further devolution of powers, while adopting an all-inclusive approach to governance and development in the country,” he said.
