Ousted Gabon president, Bongo calls on public to protest against his arrest [Video]

Hours after military leaders seized power in Gabon, President Ali Bongo issued a plea to the public from where he is being held under house arrest.

Bongo called on the people of Gabon to “make noise,” saying in a brief video he had been illegally detained at his residence.

Bongo was accused of high treason, the group of high-ranking officers said.

The group added that other government officials as well as Bongo’s son, Nouredine Bongo, had been arrested.

Earlier, the military leaders in Gabon announced they seized power, days after the central African nation’s presidential election which confirmed President Ali Bongo Ondimba’s third term.

The election results had been falsified, a group of officers said.

State institutions had been dissolved with immediate effect, the election results annulled and the country’s borders closed, said the group, which called itself the Committee for Transition and Restoration of Institutions (CTRI).

The CTRI had decided to “put an end to the current regime.”

The announcement came a few hours after the electoral authority declared Bongo the winner of the election with 64.27 per cent of the vote.

The FCT Emergency Management Agency (FCT FEMA) said in a statement that two victims have died, while 37 others were evacuated and taken to the hospital.

Wike, who gave the order when he visited the scene of the incident on Thursday, also asked the Permanent Secretary, FCT Administration, Mr Adesola Olusade, to pay the medical bills of those hospitalised.

The minister also urged the Department of Development Control, FCTA, to urgently resettle the residents of the community.

He urged stakeholders to work with government officials for the interest of everyone.

“This is what we are talking about; people just built houses without due diligence to minimum standards.

“This is why cities are planned – forestall this kind of incidents.

“I sympathise with those who lost their lives while the medical bills of those in the hospitals will be paid immediately,” he said.

Earlier, the Director, Development Control, Mr Mukhtar Galadima, had explained that the area was unplanned and houses an indigenous community.

Galadima said that the two-storey building was multipurpose and was for both residential and commercial use.

The permanent secretary commended security agencies and some contractors who came out in their numbers to render support in evacuating the rubbles and search for more victims.

Also, the Director-General, FCT FEMA, Dr Idriss Abass, said that relevant agencies had been on ground since the occurrence of the incident, to rescue the victims.

Abass said that efforts were still ongoing “to ensure that no one is left under the rubbles”.

Meanwhile, some of the victims, who spoke with NAN said that they lost their investments and properties to the incident, and called for government support.

One of them, Ms Glory Perekeme, who operates a restaurant and a bar at the building, said she lost about N5 million as she could not take anything from her restaurant.

“I closed for business around 10:00 p.m. and was on my way home when I received a call that the building had collapsed and my investment gone.

“I am still in shock; and I don’t even know where to start from.

“I really need assistance. Government should come to our aid so we can start all over again,” she said.

Another victim, Mrs Ann Anyi, who owned a laundry and sells shoes, said that she lost everything to the incident.

“I have been crying since I got the news of the incident in the midnight.

  • Seun Kuti’s Lawyers Condemn Police Parade and Handcuffing

Seun Kuti’s Lawyers Condemn Police Parade and Handcuffing

Lawyers representing Seun Kuti, the renowned musician and activist, have expressed their disapproval of the police’s decision to parade and handcuff their client.

The condemnation comes in response to an incident that occurred on Saturday, May 13, 2023, when Seun had an encounter with a policeman on the Third Mainland Bridge.

Earlier today, Seun reported himself to the Commissioner of Police at the Police Command in Ikeja, accompanied by his legal representatives, Femi Akinyemi from Falana and Falana chambers.

However, instead of facing interrogation at the station, it was decided that he would be transferred to the Force Criminal Investigation Unit at Panti, Yaba.

Prior to his transfer, Seun was subjected to a public parade, during which he was handcuffed, and his photograph was taken by the Lagos Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), David Hundeyin. The photograph was then shared with the media.

This action has raised concerns among Seun’s legal team regarding the violation of Section 9 of the Lagos State Administration of Criminal Justice Law, which explicitly prohibits the parade of criminal suspects in Lagos State.

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, the lead counsel representing Seun criticised the police for disregarding the law they are meant to uphold.

He highlighted that the police’s decision to handcuff the musician was also illegal, as it contravenes Section 5 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law.

Olumide-Fusika emphasised that according to law, Seun is presumed innocent until proven guilty, and therefore subjecting him to such treatment before the completion of the legal process was unjust.

Following the parade, Seun was then transported from Ikeja to Panti in a long convoy of heavily armed personnel. He is currently being held at the Panti police formation while awaiting the next steps in the legal process.

The legal team of Seun now awaits the actions of the police in relation to the alleged misdemeanor.

Seun Kuti: Police action violates Sec 5 of the Admin of Criminal Justice Law -Lawyer

Counsel to Seun Kuti, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, SAN has said the action so far by the police on his client violates Section 5 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law.

In a statement he said: “Following his encounter with a policeman on the Third Mainland Bridge on Saturday the 13th May, 2023, my client, Mr. Seun Kuti reported himself in the office of the Commissioner of Police at the Police Command, Ikeja, at 8 am today Monday May 15, 2023.

“I accompanied him to the Ikeja police station together with another lawyer, Mr. Femi Akinyemi from Falana and Falana chambers.

    “However, there was no
interrogation as it was decided he would be moved to the Force Criminal Investigation Unit at Panti, Yaba.

“Before his movement, Mr. Seun Kuti, was handcuffed and his photograph taken in the open by the Lagos PPRO, Mr. David Hundeyin who coordinated the parade and apparently shared the photograph of his parade in the media.

“Mr. Kuti is presumed innocent until the contrary is proved by the State. Therefore, the decision of the police to subject him to the media parade violates section 9 of the Lagos State Administration of Criminal Justice Law, which has prohibited any form of parade of criminal suspects in Nigeria in Lagos State.

” The Police is supposed to enforce the Law, but prefers to disrespect and break it so casually and randomly. A Police institution that has no respect for the law it exists to enforce is not a good example to alleged law breakers.

“The decision of the police to handcuff Mr. Kuti is equally illegal as it constitutes a violation of Section 5 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law.

“After handcuffing him, the Police then drove him in a long convoy of heavily armed personnel from Ikeja to Panti Lagos, where he was again displayed for viewing to the men and officers of that police formation, and is currently held.

“We await the next move of the Police on the misdemeanor alleged against Mr. Seun Kuti.
