Christmas Party: Umahi orders arrest of caterer over poor food quality

Gov. David Umahi of Ebonyi on Thursday, ordered the arrest of the caterer who allegedly served poor quality food during the Christmas party for widows and the aged in the state.

Umahi, who did not disclose the name of the caterer, said it was terrible for someone to give others what he or she could not consume.

The governor said that the police would follow due process in investigating the cook for her to refund the funds given to her to prepare the food.

“We are therefore, going to repeat this party as we should celebrate our fathers and mothers well.

“The bible enjoins us to honour our fathers and mothers so that our days would be long on earth.

“I want my days to be long because I have suffered from the youth.,” he said.

He declared that he would inspect the food to be served the widows and elders during the repeat celebration scheduled to hold on Dec. 21.

“I have directed the deputy governor and my senior special adviser on religion and welfare matters, to make adequate preparations.

“The celebration must be held on Dec.20 or 21 as anyone who takes what belongs to these category of people is taking trouble,” he said.

Umahi also expressed dismay over the quality of wrappers given to the widows and elders, describing it as low in quality.

“We gave the civil servants high quality of wrapper and they were happy.

“The people who supplied those of the civil servants should be ready to supply 10,000 highest quality wrappers, to the widows and elders,”.

He advised parents to inculcate good morals in their children to check the social vices being witnessed in the country especially in the south east zone.

“When I declared that the mode of agitation some people propagated in the zone would be uncontrollable if not checked, people didn’t take it serious.

“Ebonyi will never be part of any agitation which leads to the killing of our people and unwarranted destruction of property,” he said.

Alleged defamation: NANS issues threat over Mohammed’s detention

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), South-West zone, has threatened to embark on a peaceful protest to demand the immediate release of a 500-level student of Federal University, Dutse, Jigawa State, Aminu Adamu Mohammed, who was arrested over a tweet.

Mohammed, charged to court and remanded at Suleja Correctional centre, Niger State, was arrested on 18th November for allegedly publishing a defamatory statement on his Twitter handle against the Nigerian first lady Aisha Buhari.

The tweet which was accompanied by a photo of the first lady looking like she had gained weight was published in Hausa language on 8 June and read: “Su mama anchi kudin talkawa ankoshi. When translated loosely, it means: “Mama is feeding fat on poor people’s money”.

Mohammed was subsequently trailed by a team of detectives and arrested in Dutse, North-West Nigeria, on 18 November, before being whisked to Abuja where he has spent nearly two weeks in detention.

He was arraigned before Justice Yusuf Halilu, of the Federal Capital Territory High Court at Maitama on Tuesday, where he pleaded not guilty and was remanded at Suleja prison in Niger State.

The charge against him read that between May and June 2022 within the jurisdiction of this court, the defendant intentionally opened a Twitter handle and screenshot the photograph of the first lady which he published with a post in Hausa language roughly translated to English language to mean ‘Mama has embezzled monies meant for the poor to satisfaction’, knowing same to be false and capable of affecting her reputation.

The police said the alleged offence bordering on defamation and cyberstalking, contravened Section 391 of the Penal Code.

In a list of witnesses attached to the proof of evidence filed by the police, Mrs Buhari, the nominal complainant, is one of the five witnesses assembled by the prosecution to establish the case against Mr Adamu.

Another witness is Festus Jossiah, one of the investigators that tracked and arrested the defendant. The others are Abdulsalam Zakari, Yahaya Njayo and Haliru Tahir, all police officers.

Court filings signed by James Idachaba, a lawyer at the FCT police legal department in Abuja, listed Mr Adamu’s statement, a print out of the alleged defamatory post and an IPhone belonging to the defendant, as exhibits.

Meanwhile, Mohammed has urged the court to grant him bail in an application dated 25th November, pending the determination of the suit.

His legal representative, Kingsley Agu, based his application on the grounds that the defendant had never been charged for any crime and the defendant was treating a third-degree fire burn on his left arm and has been in severe pains his arrest and detention.

The judge had adjourned the case until 30th January, 2023 for the hearing of the defendant’s bail request, but the defendant is said to be having an examination on 5 December and there have been mounting calls for his immediate release.

The NANS South-West chapter, has issued a 24-hours ultimatum to Mrs Buhari for the unconditional release of Mohammed to enabke him sit for his final year examinations.

In a statement jointly signed by the zonal coordinator of NANS South-West Zone D, Adegboye Emmanuel Olatunji and the Chairman of NANS in Ogun State, Simeon Damilola Kehinde, the students threatened to block major roads across the South-West in protest if Mrs Aisha Buhari, fails to order the release of Mohammed.

The body while condemning the continuous detention of Aminu, described the act as a violation of his fundamental human rights, adding that the alleged brutality, harassment and humiliation of Mohammed by the police, who are said to have acted on the order of the first lady was an abuse of power.

A human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong, has also described Mrs Buhari’s conduct as “evil and a gross abuse of power.”

  • Why we arrested 13 youths in Jos – Police

Why we arrested 13 youths in Jos – Police

The Police Command in Plateau says it can justify why it arrested and charged to court 13 youths who claim to be mountaineers (hikers) in a community of Jos North Local Government Area of the state.

DSP Alfred Alabo, the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, gave the explanation in a statement.

Alabo discarded the social media reports about the arrest, insisting that the reports did not represent what happened.

“It is true that 13 youths were arrested at down base of a worship centre staff community, following a sting operation by the police in a suspicious manner.

“The police detained them for questioning and investigation to determine who they are and to authenticate the veracity of their claim as innocent hikers.

“Those who have been following recent security situation on the Plateau will recall that there were distress calls on the police over the many incidents of kidnapping and other insecurity in that axis.

“The command arrested 13 persons, 12 males and one female, in a cave referred to as Rock Number One used by secret cult groups for initiation and other nefarious activities,” he said.

Alabo further explained that preliminary investigation revealed that the suspects did not have permission from the community leaders as it was the practice before embarking on the said hiking.

“The suspects claimed that they were out for hiking, but preliminary police investigations and information from vigilante members and other community leaders indicated that before any hiking activity, the traditional rulers of the area ought to know.

“The suspects  neither sought nor got the nod of the of the traditional rulers or the local security of the community thus raising suspicions on their activities at the cave, especially that when there were reports that kidnappers have been plundering the community.

‘“The suspects were taken to custody and immediately handed over to the Anti-Cult Unit of the command for further investigation.

‘“Search warrant was executed in their various houses and premises and some dry leaves suspected to be cannabis sativa and a military camouflage face-cap was recovered, hence, the suspects were charged to court for prosecution on  Aug. 15,” he said.

The PPRO said that the exhibits recovered from the execution of the search warrant would be tendered in court as evidence.

Alabo called on the public to disregard the news that had been making the rounds in some social media platforms and some sections of the media that the police arrested innocent hikers.

He explained that the police and the court could not both be wrong at the same time.

He urged residents of the state to report any suspicious activity or movements in their vicinities to the security agencies for prompt response.
