EPL: Szoboszlai’s late strike sinks Arsenal as Liverpool top table

Liverpool defeated Arsenal 1-0 at Anfield on Sunday, with Dominik Szoboszlai’s stunning free-kick ensuring the Reds maintained their perfect start to the season.

The Hungarian midfielder curled in an unstoppable strike from distance in the 83rd minute, sparking wild celebrations and leaving Arsenal’s resilient defence finally undone.

Arsenal’s afternoon worsened when William Saliba limped off early with injury, disrupting their backline. In spite of periods of possession, the Gunners lacked cutting edge in attack.

Liverpool, meanwhile, enjoyed strong support and pressed relentlessly. Arne Slot’s side now sit top of the Premier League table with three wins from three games.

Elsewhere, Manchester City suffered a surprise 2–1 defeat at Brighton, raising questions about their early form after dropping vital points in consecutive matches.

Manchester United edged Burnley 3–2 at Old Trafford. Bruno Fernandes converted a late penalty, ensuring United secured their first home league victory of the campaign.

Chelsea recorded a comfortable 2–0 win against Fulham, while Bournemouth stunned Tottenham with a narrow 1–0 success, denting Spurs’ hopes of maintaining momentum.

Everton claimed a thrilling 3-2 victory over Wolves, whereas Sunderland delighted home fans with a late 2–1 comeback win against Brentford.

West Ham impressed with a dominant 3-0 triumph away at Nottingham Forest, signalling intent after an inconsistent opening fortnight.

After three rounds, Liverpool lead the standings on maximum points, with Arsenal, Chelsea and West Ham among the early chasers. City remain unusually unsettled.

Arteta gives worrying injury updates on Saka, Odegaard

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has provided a concerning update on Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard following their 5-0 Premier League win over Leeds on Saturday.

Odegaard, 26, was the first to go off, replaced by wonderkid Ethan Nwaneri in the 38th minute due to an apparent shoulder problem.

The 23-year-old limped off on the 53rd minute of Arsenal’s convincing win over newly promoted Leeds having scored their second goal.

Thankfully for the two players, their teammates were able to get the job done in their absence, taking the North London club to the top of the Premier League.

Speaking to the press after the game, Arteta kept his cards close to his chest, saying: “Martin looked like a shoulder. We’ll have a scan tomorrow so we’ll see.

“Bukayo had to come off when he was sprinting with a defender, he felt a hamstring, a different one (than last season). We’ll have to speak to the doctors.

“We lost Kai, which is a massive player and now Bukayo and Martin, that’s why the squad has to be big.”

Arsenal unveils Eberechi Eze at Emirates stadium

Finally, after signing Crystal Palace lethal midfielder, Arsenal officially unveiled Eberechi Eze at the Emirates stadium on Saturday.

Arsenal swooped to sign Eze ahead of rivals Tottenham and then unveiled him to fans on the Emirates Stadium pitch ahead of today’s clash.

Another big summer signing, Viktor Gyokeres, makes his home debut, while 15-year-old Max Dowman is on the bench in a Premier League game for the first time.

Arteta’s side were not at their best last weekend at Old Trafford but came away with the three points and now face a Leeds side who also made a winning start. Daniel Farke’s team are back in the Premier League and marked their return to the top flight with a 1-0 win of their own against Everton on Monday night.

Arsenal retains Nwaneri on fresh long term deal

Arsenal teenager Ethan Nwaneri has signed a fresh five-year contract which will keep him at the Premier League club until the summer of 2030.

The 18-year-old’s previous deal had been set to expire in June 2026.

“It means everything to me, I’m so happy to have got it done. This is where I feel at home, and where I’m going to develop the best,” he said.

“I’m very excited. I see this as my first real season and part of a proper squad in the changing room. I’m so excited for what I can bring to the team and how I can help the team.

“I think I’ve actually become more direct over the past few years and I’ve added more goals, so I’m excited for what will come next.”

Nwaneri made headlines when he became the youngest player ever to appear in the Premier League aged 15 years and 181 days old against Brentford in September 2022.

And the attacking midfielder made 37 appearances and scored nine goals in all competitions during a breakthrough campaign for the Gunners last term.

He capped a fine 2024-25 season by helping England Under-21s defend their European Championship title in Slovakia in June.

  • Paul Scholes questions Arsenal signing of Gyokeres

Paul Scholes questions Arsenal signing of Gyokeres

Former Manchester United star Paul Scholes has questioned Arsenal’s signing of striker Viktor Gyokeres this summer.

Arsenal will hope that Gyokeres, who bagged 97 goals in 102 appearances for Sporting, will spearhead the North London side to the title this season in what is their biggest signing of the summer so far in a £63.7M deal.

The Portuguese international was immediately handed the No.14 shirt, the same number worn by legendary player Thierry Henry. However, despite the obvious trust manager Mikel Arteta has already put in Gyokeres to live up to Henry and become a goal scoring machine, Scholes has questioned the signing.

    Is Gyokeres the right choice?

Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, the former United midfielder asked whether Gyokeres is really the type of player the Gunners need to lead their attack and if Arteta really wanted to sign him over other world class strikers this summer.

“I just wonder if you’ve chosen the right one. Because there was a lot of um-ing and ah-ing about it, I wondered if Mikel Arteta really wanted him, as the main one he wants? I’m not too sure, and he’s got him now.

“He’s had a really strange career path – Brighton, Coventry, and then he’s gone to Sporting Lisbon and his goal record is absolutely brilliant you can’t take that away from him. If there’s any team that he could go to and create chances, then it should be Arsenal and it should be a really good match.”

    Will Gyokeres fit tactically?

Gyokeres won the golden boot In the Primeira Liga last year with 39 goals as he helped Sporting to yet another league title. However, despite his impressive stats, Scholes again questioned if he fits into Arteta’s tactics which will require him to maintain possession whereas at Sporting he was used to counter attacking football.

“The only thing I’d say against Gyokeres really is that with Sporting Lisbon, he’s probably playing on the counter-attack a lot, in Europe especially,” Scholes said.

“You think of Arsenal, they have the ball an awful lot, is he going to be clever enough to make these runs in behind – a lot of him that you see, he’s sprinting from the halfway line almost, you can’t keep up with him, he’s ramming people, he’s quick and he’s smashing the ball in.

“Is he going to be that clever striker – we know (Alexander) Isak can do that. Can Gyokeres do that?”

Tottenham slam Arsenal 1-0 at ongoing Hon Kong football fiesta

Tottenham beat north London rivals Arsenal 1-0 in Hong Kong; Pape Sarr scores goal from halfway line to give Spurs pre-season friendly win; new Arsenal signing Viktor Gyokeres came on as second-half substitute for debut but only had two touches as Arsenal fell to defeat

Pape Sarr’s stunning halfway line goal gave Tottenham a 1-0 pre-season friendly win over north London rivals Arsenal in Hong Kong.

Sarr robbed Myles Lewis-Skelly – who Arsenal felt had been fouled by Richarlison in midfield – before firing an outrageous long-range lob just inside Arsenal’s half over a stranded David Raya to score with Spurs’ only shot on target of the game in the 45th minute.

Before Sarr’s screamer, the Arsenal goalkeeper had a couple of shaky moments at corners as Spurs hit the post twice directly from deliveries, as Richarlison missed a glorious close-range chance from the second corner.

Tottenham winger Wilson Odobert also hit the post with a low shot in a feisty and physical first half, which saw Spurs midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur booked for a late tackle on Bukayo Saka.

There was more north London derby needle in the second half as Pedro Porro pushed Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta before taking a throw-in, with the Spurs defender feeling Arteta was in his way.

Arteta brought new signing Viktor Gyokeres on in the 77th minute for his debut as Saka came off after receiving treatment.

Gyokeres, who joined on Saturday in a £63.5m deal, did not have enough time to make an impact as he had just two touches, with Arsenal having one shot on target in the defeat.

Spurs, who won the Europa League last season, were presented with a trophy for winning the first-ever north London derby overseas, leading the club to tweet: “another one for the trophy cabinet”.

  • Merino equals Arteta, Aubameyang, Wright’s unwanted Arsenal Record

Merino equals Arteta, Aubameyang, Wright’s unwanted Arsenal Record

Mikel Merino has etched his name in an unwanted Arsenal record following his red card in Sunday’s 2-2 draw against Liverpool.

The Spaniard was sent off for a reckless tackle against Reds. The referee initially issued a yellow card, but after reviewing the incident on VAR, the decision was upgraded to a red for serious foul play.

In the process he became the fourth player for the Gunners to both score and be sent off in the same game in the competition.

Others to achieve this were Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in January 2020 against Crystal Palace, Mikel Arteta in October 2013 against Crystal Palace and Ian Wright in December 1996 against Nottingham Forest.

Merino’s red card was Arsenal’s sixth in the Premier League this season, only receiving more in the competition in 1998-99 season.
